Rep. Walter Jones (R-NC): Ban Abortion to Lift God’s Curse Off of America

This is the state of the Republican Party

That’s right, folks, here’s one of the Republican Party’s top politicians, a Congressman no less, going on the batshit crazy Alex Jones show and agreeing with him that legal abortion has caused God to put a curse on America.

From downstairs:

Tea Party November 2014: Down with government coercion, regulation, interference with personal choices!

Tea Party January 2015: Oh, here is our totally reasonable, popular, innocuous bill to ban abortions and require “rape victims†jump through a whole bunch of hoops before they can get an abortion.

2 HappyWarrior  Jan 23, 2015 11:02:33am

I don’t know what bothers me more. The fact that these people are elected officials or the people that keep on voting for them. But both Joneses again show the weird relationship with our country that wingnuts have. One day it’s America Fuck Yeah! and the other day it’s we’re cursed because of legal abortion.

3 Charles Johnson  Jan 23, 2015 11:03:11am

Our boy Chuck obviously saw my tweets about Barrett Brown, and now he’s retweeting Wikileaks and Democracy Now to help them push their lies.

On Wednesday, Rep. Walter Jones, R-N.C., called into conspiracy theorist Alex Jones’ radio show to promote the House GOP’s 20-week abortion ban

Yeah we know Alex Jones is a racist psycho, BUT ARE ABORTION BILL!!!!!1

6 Kragar  Jan 23, 2015 11:05:20am

The GOP loves big government regulation curtailing the rights of citizens when its done to overturn mystical curses set in play by omnipotent deities

So-called “Pro-lifers” worship a guy who murdered for a living (i.e., Chris Kyle).

Jones should resign.

Can we ask for a vote in The House on who thinks God has cursed this country and get them all out of there?

re:

One day it’s America Fuck Yeah! and the other day it’s we’re cursed because of legal abortion.

Yeah, the dissonance is jarring.

And the No Abortions After 20 Weeks bill would affect only a small share of abortions so even after all of that we’d still have legal abortion and still be under a curse. /

11 Kid A  Jan 23, 2015 11:08:46am

They’re pro-life pre-life, and after that, YOU’RE ON YOUR OWN!!!

12 b.d.  Jan 23, 2015 11:09:03am

Can we quit singing God bless America since we know that he/she has cursed us instead?

We are cursed. Cursed with imbeciles and cretins elected to office. Just when will the curse be lifted? When the citizens of this nation wake the f**K up. Man this gets old.

23% efficiency at preventing a disease that can prove fatal to the young, infirm, and immuno-compromised.

Imagine being given the option to taking a vaccine for cancer that offers a 23% chance of not getting breast cancer, or if you do get it, a lesser form.

Most people would jump at that opportunity.

I took the flu vaccine, and still got the flu - though not as bad as it could have been had I not gotten the vaccine at all. And I did so knowing that I know far too many people who are immune compromised because of cancer treatments or are too young to get the vaccines themselves. I got vaccinated not just for myself, but for everyone else too.

And yes, it’s an educated guess about what strain will be active, and antigenic drift can reduce the efficacy of the vaccine. That’s why they’re working on a new vaccine that targets different parts of the influenza virus - parts that don’t change as frequently. If they can do that, then they can offer up a real shot at preventing flu epidemics.

38 Dr. Matt  Jan 23, 2015 11:35:05am

em>re: #28 Prof. Backpfeifengesicht, PhD

A couple of the greatest public health successes include anti-smoking campaigns to reduce lung cancer rates and vaccination uptake to eliminate (or nearly eliminate) infectious diseases. There is no hand waving, massaging of the data, or mere correlations….these impacts are real and causal. Anti-vaxers are a threat to public safety.

This is a big part of why I don’t like Maher. Doesn’t hurt that he’s also unbelievably smug too. I’ve always been more partial to a Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert who can laugh at himself.

40 withak  Jan 23, 2015 11:35:56am

re: #36 Prof. Backpfeifengesicht, PhD

I had no idea about his anti-vaxx views until now.

I used to like Bill Maher in spite of the fact that he’s an asshole, because he was usually right about things, and was able to argue convincingly about a large variety of topics.

Now I realize he’s just an asshole with some really, really ignorant opinions, and those opinions are impervious to facts and reasoning.

It’s a shame, really.

My buddies and I used to have an expression for people like Maher:

“My fist balls up by itself just looking at him.”

44 HappyWarrior  Jan 23, 2015 11:38:02am

I’ve found I liked more of what Maher says than Maher himself. Maher has that self-righteous attitude that I hate in all talk show hosts. The whole “I host a talk show so therefore I know what I’m talking about and you don’t.” It is too bad because sometimes he does make a lot of sense but other-times he just acts like a complete asshole and in this case shows himself to be as ignorant as those he denounces.

45 Rightwingconspirator  Jan 23, 2015 11:38:38am

I guess the “Curse” of a Ivy League educated black man with historically progressive politics may soon be supplanted by an Ivy League educated white woman with a feminist and progressive history.

I bet they can’t decide which “Curse” is worse at this point. And besides, if they believe that America is cursed, then why don’t they just pick up and leave to a place on Earth that isn’t “cursed?” Like perhaps the Libertarian/Tea Party favorite Russia under Putin.

Non-Ivy League, gun totin’, judo kicking’, corporatist white man all the way. Surely that place is paradise.

Greece, Netherlands, Great Britain for instance.

Anything with a giant silly head dress, is a disqualifier for me. Exception for the great britain one because it is actually an iconic piece of head gear from great britain.

I am shocked by the comments. Usually Yahoo is a toilet of conservative dreck, and I likely missed it by not reading too many of those comments, but this was teh awesums!

My girlfriend and I were staying at a high end hotel a while back. We were in the elevator at 1:30am heading up to our room. All of the sudden the door stopped and in walked Sarah, another girl and a huge bodyguard. We said a quick “Hello” and the other chick and the guy said a polite “Hi” back but Sarah didn’t even address us. She actually looked agitated that us “little people” had the nerve to address her. A few seconds went by and then BAM out of the blue that cow hiked up her left leg and let forth the loudest, longest, most forceful / pungent wind eliminations I was ever privy to. It was no accident because that pig aimed her back side at the wood lament on the wall to enhance the sound. Then the door opened and Sarah turned around, smiled and started laughing and walked out. After we came out of our methane induced stupor my girl asked me “Did we just get crop dusted by Sarah?” …. I said “Yes honey, yes we did”.

WOW! No kidding. That is very cool. Odd but cool. :-)

In case anyone else was wondering:

Mummer’s Day, or “Darkie Day” as it is sometimes known (a corruption of the original “Darking Day”), is an ancient Cornish midwinter celebration that occurs every year on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day in Padstow, Cornwall. It was originally part of the pagan heritage of midwinter celebrations that were regularly celebrated throughout Cornwall where people would take part in the traditional custom of guise dancing, which involves disguising themselves by painting their faces black or wearing masks.

The dark face paint, masks and dark clothing are symbols of the celebration of the winter solstice, and is in contrast to the ‘white’ summer solstice festivals of Cornish towns such as the ‘Obby ‘Oss festival in Padstow and Golowan in Penzance. The Montol Festival in Penzance is a similar winter solstice celebration, during which people guise dance with darkly painted skin or masks to disguise themselves.

There has been recently controversy in the British media regarding Mummer’s Day, due to the blackened faces and the term “Darkie Day”, with commentators misinterpreting the festival as racist. The name “Darkie Day” is actually a corruption of the original “Darking Day”, which refers to the “darking” (darkening) of the faces. Both the face painting and the term “Darkie” have no connection to black people as a group.[1]

So Mrs Cranky took some pictures of the local scenery and created this, using only colors that were common in the area. Sent it via UPS who proceeded to lose it. Long story short, they shouldn’t have messed with the Cranky Ones ;) My sister now has the quilt, although it took a while.

When Wingnut Cavemen Attack

I never thought I’d be spurred to defend GOP Rep. Renee Ellmers, but the misogyny coming from the right, in the wake of her helping torpedo the 20-week abortion ban, is appalling.

The boys over at Red State are leading the charge, with sexually insecure sad sack Erick Erickson calling her “the GOP’s Abortion Barbie” (his sick nickname for Wendy Davis) and now another Red Stater, Aaron Gardner, asking “Is Renee Ellmers worthy of life?”

In a country where abortion providers have been murdered and clinics bombed, that’s a particularly ugly provocation.

Have started reading the King’s Game: Origin manga. A nice and bloody horror story. A bunch of kids in a small Japanese mountain village in the 1970s receive a letter from a mysterious “King” who orders all young villagers from 10 to 20 years old to touch a corpse before the clock strikes 12, the punishment for refusal is hanging. They do it as a joke (going to the trouble of digging one up in the graveyard), but a couple don’t and sure enough, the next morning they’re found hanged. The adult villagers think it was a suicide, but the kids know better. Then the second “order” arrives…

I was at the Charlotte, NC airport some years ago and they had this one quilt as artwork that was the most fabulous thing I have ever seen in my life. It was a NYC rooftop with an amazing skyline behind it. On the roof was a laundry line and it had things like jeans and towels hanging up to dry. There were buttons and beads used as elements (like windows and stars, not just like buttons on the jeans). It was truly a piece of art.

I just spent 10 minutes Googling and it doesn’t look like there are pics anywhere. If I can dig up my old Palm I will post the pictures.

It was more on the scale of artwork than pattern. Kinda (but nothing) like this one. It was all vibrant colors and almost came alive.

Amazing quilted art

The latest totally awesome regular expression that extracts the ASIN product code from almost any Amazon product URL, now working with non-US Amazon stores.

I used the x modifier to let me split the regex across multiple lines with comments and indenting. I also used ~ for the regular expression delimiter so all the forward slashes don’t need to be escaped. Makes the code much more readable.

This guy would have ended up in a stand off with a SWAT team if he had been around longer.

Ellmers is in the wingnut sh*thouse right now, I would imagine any number of them fed Chuck some rumors that they knew he would run as the gospel truth.

She stood up to them on abortion, so now the Tea Party far right is lashing out, trying to tear her down and slut shame her. These kinds of attacks might be a little bit more believable if the timing wasn’t always so obvious, desperate and reactionary. Also, if they were sourced on the record and came with anything resembling actual evidence.

As it is I strongly suspect another Booker, Menendez, McDaniel like story, long on bullshit allegation, short on fact, and antithetical to observable reality.

No, she doesn’t sell them. She gives them away. She worries that family members and friends will get a squishy package as a gift and say “Oh, no, not another quilt!” Seriously. When I asked for pictures, she said she hadn’t photographed many before giving them away.

I’m trying to get some pics of a few she actually felt are worthy of comment. When I praise her skills, she points to some of the art quilts like the ones mentioned and says she’s just an amateur.

Here is another she finished last summer:

Not only is her color use excellent, but the precision with all those points meeting up properly is not the work of a second class quilter. It’s hard to tell, but either it is hand quilted or it is the most spectacular machine quilting I’ve ever seen. Which is also not the work of a second class quilter. I think maybe her style tends toward the traditional which isn’t as popular as the ‘art quilts’, but it takes every bit as much skill and attention to detail as the latter. It is just a matter of taste.

It depends on where you are. Is it deep winter there (as it is here) or do you have outdoor options? Are you in a city or are you more rural?

General ideas:
- comedy club
- bookstore (author reading, perusing and sharing thoughts on books, etc.)
- mall walking and laughing at silly stuff in windows
- mini golf
- rock climbing (local mini golf places have rock climbing right next door)
- walk through an arboretum
- museum
- theatre (play) with a late snack after
- top of the tallest building
- supernatural tours (silly but fun)
- horse drawn carriage ride
- shopping where you cannot possibly afford to shop and laugh at the suckers that pay $1000 for a pair of shoes

Did that help?

re: #213 calochortus

Yes, I think you are correct, her style does lean toward the traditional.

Other folks who quilt and see her work in person comment on the precision, especially that her quilts end up incredibly square and even. The big shame is that you can’t really appreciate them from pictures because the detail isn’t visible.

After my dad passed away, J asked my mom for his ties. She gave them up reluctantly. J used them to make a memory quilt. My mom, who made most of the families clothes while we were growing up and her sister are both accomplished seamstresses. They were both stunned by the quilt, saying it was incredible. My mom has called it her prize possession. Family and friends who have seen it all remark on remembering some of the ties.

That was one of the few quilts she’s done that she fussed about while making it. I guess stitching together silk, knits, etc. with precision isn’t easy….

She is now if the process of making 6 memory quilts (actually throws) out of her daughter-in-laws mom’s clothes.

Thanks for the comment. I’ll pass it along!

The GOP’s habit of moving the goal posts has infiltrated their own party. In the past few weeks we’ve seen two freshly elected Republican Reps hauled over the rhetorical coals for deviating from the current standards of conservatism. That’s a serious speed up in how quickly lunatic ideas become the norm. Someone who would have been considered a rock-ribbed conservative just a few years ago might now be derided as a squishy liberal.

Exactly. Marco Rubio comes to mind for me in what you’re talking about. That guy was a Tea Party sweetheart not even four years ago but he lost some goodwill when he decided to express a reasonable sentiment on immigration. Part of what makes Ted Cruz such a dangerous demagogue is that he opposes everything Obama does not on real principle but knowing the kind of reaction it will get. His opposition to Net Neutrality was based solely in fueling the Anti-Obama flames.

What a lovely gift! I would imagine working with all those ties of whatever fiber would be difficult. Also ties are cut on the bias (45º to the direction of the threads) which makes them stretchy. You could cut pieces on the straight of grain, but then it wouldn’t look quite so much like the original tie.

She didn’t re-cut any and yes, she did complain mightily about the fabric stretching and how the different fabrics stretched different amounts. But she wanted the ties to look like ties.

I would claim that part of the problem is there is no set standard of conservatism, but a kind of…ferment.

You’ve got populism contributing a need to continuously one-up other conservatives: here’s a more frightening prognostication, here’s a bolder line in the sand. You’ve got a religious streak defined by a continuous roil of new revelations and signs-and-wonders interpretation.

A marketplace of ideas ain’t worth shit if it’s all patent medicines sold out the back of carts.

And that’s without delving contrasting the declared values of the party with the values implied in their policy.

Same-sex couples can now marry in the state of Oklahoma. But if a state legislator gets his way, atheists and other religious minorities would have a much harder time tying the knot.

A new bill filed by Oklahoma State Rep. Todd Russ. House Bill 1125 would bar judges and other public officials from solemnizing marriages. Marriage licenses would have to be approved by a clergy person.

As written, the bill even seems to restrict the right to marry to Christians and Jews. The ability to sign off on a marriage license would belong to “…an ordained or authorized preacher or minister of the Gospel, priest or other ecclesiastical dignitary of any denomination who has been duly ordained or authorized by the church to which he or she belongs to preach the Gospel, or a rabbi.” […]

Science! One Way To Deflate a Football Without Even Touching It

The Patriots did not necessarily have to alter or deflate the football in order to beat the system and play the AFC Championship Game with footballs that were easier to grip and catch.

Martin Schmaltz, a Professor of Physics at Boston University, explained the truths and myths of Deflategate to boston.com, and helped outline a theory where the Patriots could have easily passed the NFL’s pregame tests with the same footballs that failed to meet the league’s mandated standards at halftime.

“One complication with the pressure units that we usually use, in this case PSI (Pressure per Square Inch) is that we are measuring the pressure above the atmospheric pressure,” Schmaltz said. “Air at a fixed volume- and I assume the size of a football stays pretty much the same whether it has a PSI of 13 or 11- if the size stays the same, and you change the temperature of the air, the pressure inside the football changes as well.”

The key question, as outlined by Schmaltz, is where the balls were tested prior to the game. If the balls were tested indoors, where the temperature was likely above the 50 degree temperature outdoors Sunday, then the pressure inside the ball would drop once the ball is moved outdoors and begins to cool off.

“If they had inflated the balls inside the building and put it to the minimum amount, and then brought it outside to temperatures that were about 30 degrees lower, that would drop the PSI by between 1 and 2,” Schmaltz explained.

They object being mockingly called the American Taliban.

They should object to a mocking tone for this. After all, American Taliban is the simple literal truth, once the political wish list is laid out. The only difference is that the US Taliban hasn’t gone all-in for violence as a solution for political problems.

However, this is not because of any principled commitment to non-violence. It’s merely that they are close enough to seizing power peacefully that they see violence as politically counter-productive (except at a deniable fringe).

…just to 11 of the 12 Patriots’ balls, and none of the Colts’ balls. Which is why it’s all due to the changes in surrounding temperature. Changes that all balls experienced equally.

This scientist is skeptical.

let’s say that one ball was filled with air that was warmer than the air in the other balls

re: #206 A Cranky One

For Pete’s sake, get her to talk to her quilting buddies or a local quilting group and find a quilt appraiser. She should know what those pieces are worth for your house insurance and the recipients should know the same for theirs. My mom is no great expert but the quilt she made for my cousin appraised at $2400. Even a couple of simpler ones are valued at $700.

The Colorado Quilt Council does documentation sessions around the state, where people can bring in quilts to be recorded. They keep a database of the photos and descriptions. Particularly interested in historical quilts, but they track the modern ones too. Illinois may have something similar.

(Rant off. Apologies if Mrs. C is already knows this stuff. Back to politics and music and cat pictures.)

I’m still trying to figure out what would be in it for the media to be pro-Sharia or pro-Caliphate or whatever. How would an Islamic state benefit them?

I know, I know, it’s Geller so it doesn’t have to make sense. *smh*

Well, that’s the thing, the media doesn’t know it’s pro-Sharia. They’re just being duped by the secular humanists atheists. ///

(okay, one more quilt comment)

Show Mrs. Cranky this thread too! If a 40-year quilter like Backwoods Sleuth admires the work, that’s high praise from someone who knows whereof they speak.

FWIW, the 12th football is a new, slick ball that only the punter & place kicker use. Many as possible 12th balls are used during the game, and are auctioned off as “game used.”

The quarterback for each team uses the 11 “worn conditioned” footballs approved (condition & inflation pressure) by the game officials for each team. Woe be unto the kicker who dares to use the quarterback’s game footballs.

A couple of hours before kickoff, each team provides the game officials with a couple dozen of of their proposed (conditioned) game footballs. The game officials inspect and select 11 each for each tram to use during the game.

The game balls are given to the home team’s assistant equipment manager to deliver to each team.

Other than NFL security and the game officials, the home team equipment manager is the only other person allowed access to the game officials locker room; as he is also responsible for stocking the the officials locker room with food, water & soft drinks.

You can draw your own conclusion as to who might have caused the discrepancy in inflation pressure for New England’s game footballs.
