Friday Afternoon Classic Jam: Procol Harum, ‘Whaling Stories’ (Live in Denmark 2006)

Shalimar, the trumpets chorused
Music • Views: 21,178

YouTube

This lesser-known song from the album “Home” was always one of my favorite Procol Harum epics, and this live performance from Denmark in 2006 is actually a big improvement over the original album version, with a symphony orchestra and choir adding to the mix beautifully. I’m pretty sure some parts were overdubbed and fixed later, but who cares — the music is glorious.

Procol Harum - Whaling Stories // Denmark - 2006
Procol Harum: Gary Brooker, Keith Reid, Matthew Fisher, Robin Trower…

Pailing well after sixteen days, a mammoth task was set
Sack the town, and rob the tower, and steal the alphabet
Close the door and bar the gate, but keep the windows clean
God’s alive inside a movie! watch the silver screen!

Rum was served to all the traitors; pygmies held themselves in check
Bloodhounds nosed around the houses, down dark alleys sailors crept
Six bells struck, the pot was boiling - soup spilled out on passers-by
Angels mumbled incantations, closely watched by God on high

Lightning struck out - fire and brimstone! boiling oil and shrieking steam!
Darkness struck with molten fury, flashbulbs glorified the scene
Not a man who had a finger, not a man who could be seen
Nothing called (not name nor number) - echo stormed it’s final scream

Daybreak washed with sands of gladness, rotting all it rotted clean
Windows peeped out on their neighbors, inside fireside bedsides gleam
Shalimar, the trumpets chorused, angels wholly all shall take
Those alive will meet the prophets, those at peace shall see their wake

You know how in the olden days when you were dating, you’d sit around and play all your records? I had a girlfriend…oh…35 years ago at least, who when we got to some of these PH songs, especially A Salty Dog, they would really get her juices flowing—literally.

We never figured out if it was the music or Gary Brooker’s voice—but in those days I looked not unlike Gary Brooker, and I was not above using that to my advantage….

Still my all-time favorite band, if you could save all the Brooker/Reid/Fisher stuff and 86 all the Robin Trower crap on their first 3 or 4 albums.

I’m pretty sure the world is all just a swirl of lights and colors to this idiot, but having a far-right-wing goober like Gohmert say “Thank God for Martin Luther King Jr.” can be seen as progress if you look at it from just the right angle and squint your eyes.

No love for the drummer? BJ Wilson is one of my favorites. I love the stuff that BJ and Matthew Fisher played on Joe Cocker’s first album.

I’m not 100% sure if that’s Wilson in the video. Both the drummer and organist look to young (to 60 y.o. me) to be from the original team…

One of the coolest and most mellow concerts I ever saw was Procol Harum at the Mershon Auditorium on the Ohio State University campus…probably around 1974 or so. They were on The Grand Hotel tour.

It was the only show by a ‘rock band’ that mellowed me out so much I slipped off to sleep for a minute or two. Just so mellowed out by the tunes.

Gary Brooker has a great voice, and that night they hand the largest Baldwin grand piano I’ve ever seen front and center on the stage. I don’t know if it was Procol Harum’s or the university’s…but it was mighty fine.

Listening to PH makes me miss some of the great music that featured organ. Nothing like that Hammond B3 sound for some great blues and rock.

Those suckers and the leslies are heavy though, as I know from experience. Don’t miss hauling them around.

And still Ohio hides behind the protection of marriage act the legislature passed a few years back.

As a citizen of the state, that embarrasses me. This state should not be that far behind in this.

But then, I do live in Columbus, a very liberal city with a huge university and a ton of smaller ones…and Columbus College of Art & Design, my beloved alma mater…and live in an art community with gay neighbors around me. That may color my view of the rest of this state.

It’s fucking sad. Come on Ohio…sheesh.

For a long time I was in a band that hauled around a Hammond Model A in an immaculate original cabinet, along with a huge leslie speaker box. It was a pain to haul around but the sound was SOOO worth it. The keyboard player eventually moved the guts of the organ into a road case that wasn’t a whole lot lighter than the original (two layers of 3/4” plywood), but at least it had handles and we didn’t smash our shins against the legs.

When he moved out to San Francisco I could have had the whole set-up for free but I barely know keyboards, didn’t know how to hook it all up, had no room for it and couldn’t get it through the door of my old house even if I’d wanted to.

I’m so glad that I got to play in a band with a Hammond. They’re so full of soul.

Also, the AIDS accusation is now an established pattern of abuse. If Charles did take him to court he’d likely have decent ground to stand on.

While many jurisdictions have merged the traditionally independent torts of libel and slander into one claim for “defamation,” California has steadfastly retained the distinction. Moreover, California has retained and codified independent standards of per se liability for each tort. The standard for libel per se established by the California legislature is actually quite broad:

A libel which is defamatory of the plaintiff without the necessity of explanatory matter, such as an inducement, innuendo or other extrinsic fact, is said to be a libel on its face. Defamatory language not libelous on its face is not actionable unless the plaintiff alleges and proves that he has suffered special damage as a proximate result thereof.

A defamatory statement that is communicated in a fixed medium and is considered to be so harmful on its face that the plaintiff need not prove special damages. Examples of libel per se are statements that: (i) relate to the person’s business or profession to the person’s detriment; (ii) falsely claim that the person committed a crime of moral turpitude; (iii) imputes unchastity on the person; or (iv) claim that the person suffers from a loathsome disease.

Y’know what’s fucked up? I was actually all like, “wait, if this is true how can I never have heard about it at all?” And then I was all embarrassed for a bit fearing I might have stupidly made a thing out of something private and none of my goddamned business.

The whole mini episode illustrates exactly the pernicious, shitty, and yes absolutely actionably libelous aspect of this ongoing pattern of abuse. It weasels its way into people’s brains and finds purchase.

I’m not ready to foist blame on those coming into the country. Vaccinated people are generally protected—these people weren’t, and they contracted measles.

KEARNY, AZ - Pinal County Health officials say four members of a Florence family have tested positive for measles.

“In a press release issued Friday, officials said the family had recently traveled to Disneyland and are believed to be linked to the measles outbreak associated with the park.

“Officials say all four family members, who live in the Kearny area, were unvaccinated.”

i grew up being the boy who caught shit from the other kids since i could never get myself interested in watching ball games on tee vee

despite this i had a thorough training in softball, touch football, basketball etc since you cant avoid it as a male in this country and besides for ten years i went to summer camps where we played softball twice a day for two months

then when i grew up i found not only was it dangerous to admit you had no interest in sports, but in addition admitting you were an - gasp! - atheist is even more dangerous

that’s why im careful to stay within the confines of places like berkeley where a person can live a perfectly normal abnormal life without ever being asked “hey what about them niners?”

It comes down to this: all the footballs were exposed to the same changes in temperature. The ones the Patriots had that failed. Their backup footballs (which passed, even after being played in the second half). The ones the Colts had. The Colts backup footballs. It is completely true that a change in temperature will result in a change in pressure in the football, all other factors remaining equal - but those factors will be equal for all the footballs.

If it were just a case of the Patriots systematically inflating the football to the bare minimum, then logically you would expect all the footballs provided by the Patriots to have tested low. (Also, given that this is something that would happen every game, you have to wonder why the fuck they haven’t dealt with this issue before and know how to compensate.) You would expect this decrease in pressure to be consistent, and consistent with the decrease in pressure observed in the Colts’ footballs. (All of this is information the league presumably has.)

The backup balls also serve as a very nice control regarding the possibility of deflation during play - exposed to the same temperature conditions, played with, and they were still found to be within regulation at the end of the game, after being played for a single half, same as the initial set. That’s what’s hinky.

Thing is, Philippines Measles vac. rate is the same as the US, right about 91%. I found a great trove of info over at the WHO site…. which of course means that if I use to to argue with any RWNJ, it’s suspect at best, and probably just created to advance a political agenda.

The way I’ve been looking at deflate gate or whatever you want to call it is this. The outcome of the game really isn’t the question. If one of us were to cheat on an exam that we would have otherwise passed, we would still be penalized and if we had a precedent which the Pats do have with the Spygate scandal, we would be even more scrutinized. The Pats do make themselves easy to hate. I think there’s a certain funny irony to the fact that they’ve become the Yankees of the NFL which is something that amuses me given that most of their local fans are no doubt Red Sox fans in baseball.

Oh no doubt about that. I was talking about sports fans though. I just think people saying that NE would have won anyway without the inflating of the balls misses the point. That makes very little sense. They had to have 24 balls prepped for the game. Twelve that were selected for use and approved as meeting regs by the ref 2 hours before the game. They just happened to have the 11 of the 24 that decreased below regulation in the set of 12 that were chosen for use for the game?

No, but so extremely unlikely that other causes can and should be examined.

Also, the coach for the Patriots has a history of pushing the rules to the edge and since each team uses their own balls when on offense, it did have the potential to offer an advantage. (Not that it seemed necessary in this case, from the score. I didn’t actually watch the game. I don’t really care about football.)

the thing is, somehow the ball or balls were detected to be below regulation

the question of how there were made to be that way is still being investigated

i like the hot air theory because it proposes a scenario where somebody thought they could mess with the pressure without altering the balls or being liable to being caught tampering with them after the official measurement
