The sad thing is when they do these for the GOP debates in 2016, the bad lip readings will still be more coherent than what the Republican candidates are talking about. I still really like these.

Governor Dropout and the Friday night news dump.

State shortfall could be $928 million over next 2 1/2 years

To keep the state doing what it does now through mid-2017, Gov. Scott Walker and lawmakers have to come up with $928 million in spending cuts or tax increases, according to estimates released Friday by the Legislature’s budget office.

The nonpartisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau found that to continue current operations, state officials have to find $283 million this year plus another $648 million over the following two-year budget beginning July 1.

The shortfall in the state’s main account becomes even larger — more than $2 billion — in the unlikely event elected officials seek to provide all of the added spending requested by agencies through June 2017 and the additional tax cuts promised by Walker in his successful re-election campaign last year.

You actually can purchase exclusive rights, which he clearly didn’t do because it’s still available. You can also modify a certain images. I used to work in the creative department of an ad agency and art buying like this was one of my main duties.

However you can NEVER do this for an editorial image, ever.

Editorial (RM)
Products in our editorial collections are licensed with restrictions on usage, such as limitations on size, placement, duration of use and geographic distribution. Editorial products must be used in an “editorial” manner, which means use relating to events that are newsworthy or of public interest. If you wish to use an image or video from our editorial collections for a non-editorial use, you must contact a sales representative to assist you. All licenses of editorial products are subject to Getty Images Editorial, Rights-Managed and Rights-Ready Image and Video License Agreement.

If you click on the last bit, you get this:

Photo Credit. Except as otherwise noted in Section 10, all Licensed Material used in an editorial context must include the following credit line adjacent to the Licensed Material: “[Photographer’s Name]/[Collection Name]/Getty Images” or as otherwise shown on the Getty Images website. If Licensee omits the credit, an additional fee in an amount up to one hundred percent (100%) of the License Fee may be payable by Licensee, at Getty Images’ sole discretion. The foregoing fee shall be in addition to any other rights or remedies that Getty Images may have at law or in equity.

2.4 Editorial Licensed Material may be cropped or otherwise edited for technical quality, provided that the editorial integrity of the Licensed Material is not compromised, but shall not, under any circumstances, otherwise be altered.

2.8 Licensed Material shall not be incorporated into a logo, corporate ID, trademark or service mark, without obtaining the prior written consent of Getty Images.

They would never grant this for CCJ’s Goat logo watermark, as it falsely implies ownership of their intellectual property.

Yup - I actually went through the process of registering an account at Getty Images and setting up purchasing licenses, for PJ Media. You don’t buy these photos; you license them. And the “exclusive use” license would be something Chuck can’t afford, especially not for one of his idiotic smear pieces.

Reality is, he just found the photo somewhere, copied it and posted it, and his Wordpress plugin automatically added the watermark. He didn’t even think about copyrights.

In other words, this man is a moron.

Ancient Scrolls, Burned in Vesuvius Volcano Eruption, Deciphered by Advanced X-Ray Scans

Scientists in Italy have managed to decipher text on a badly scorched papyrus roll from Herculaneum, a town destroyed with Pompeii in the Mount Vesuvius eruption of 79AD. The imaging technique they used may allow archaeologists to analyse other texts previously thought to be too badly damaged to read.

Scientists puzzled by GoatNews watermark superimposed on the carbonized papyrus layers.

Getty, Corbis and the other stock agencies are super nice to you if you work for a gigantic ad shop like I did. I had dedicated reps I could email or call up and get to do much of my searching for me. They’d just put whatever fit what I was asking for into a personal folder for me on a trust basis, and I’d tell them if we actually put it in front of a client. We used a lot of their stuff in compositions / spec work, most often for new business pitches, and did often get this kind of internal use for free, or very cheap. The back end on a national campaign was so enormous from their perspective that they’ll comp dozen, even hundred of display (usually not print) quality files for internal use on the slim hope that just one of their images might make it to final selection and become part of a big media buy.

This situation in Yemen is not a good development…

U.S. counterterrorism operations with Yemen suspended, officials say

washingtonpost.com

“The Obama administration has been forced to suspend counterterrorism operations with Yemen in the aftermath of the collapse of its government, according to U.S. officials, a move that abruptly eases pressure on al-Qaeda’s most dangerous franchise.

“Armed drones operated by the CIA and the U.S. Joint Special Operations Command remain deployed for now over southern Yemen, where al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula is based. But U.S. officials said that the Yemeni security services that provided much of the intelligence that sustained that U.S. air campaign are now controlled by Shiite rebels, known as Houthis, who have seized control of much of the capital.

“Even before the disintegration of the government, officials say, the growing chaos in Yemen had resulted in a steady erosion in intelligence-gathering efforts against AQAP and a de𠂟acto suspension in raids by Yemeni units trained, equipped and often flown to targeted al-Qaeda compounds by U.S. forces.” More
