I had to promote this one because it’s a great deal. I’ve been a Prime member for years and it’s one of the best deals on the web.

Love mah Prime. Weirdly, Canon refused to honor a rebate on a lens I bought on Prime. I got annoyed with Canon, not Amazon. Prime has made up its price and the missed rebate in free or near free books to read. From time to time I plug in my laptop to the big TV stream what I want and ponder cutting the cable. Anyone else notice how blu ray players suck at streaming compared to laptops?

I had a Roku for a couple of years for streaming that was great until new wifi security stuff made it unusable. I now have amazon fire sticks on both of my teevees that work beautifully.

I live in Kentucky where a major Amazon fulfillment center is located in Hebron. We’ve always paid sales tax on Amazon purchases. Any untaxed purchases (in-state/out-of-state doesn’t matter) we make during the year, we have to report on our annual state income tax return and pay the sales tax then.

He also does seem to be hilariously thin skinned for someone who does nothing but smear other people all day.

Yeah, most people actually owe their state an equivalent of a sales tax when they buy things online from out of state. Their state just lacks a way to collect it.
I was happy when Amazon started collecting sales tax for CA sales because we didn’t have to bother to try and figure out what we owed. (Yes, we’re those people who do try to pay the taxes we owe…)

I’m probably asking the wrong people since I haven’t noticed misogyny here, but why do men hate/fear women?
Are we just a handy group they want to dominate? Do we have magical powers they fear? Do they want our sweet, sweet bodies so much they can’t bear the fact they don’t control us? Are they generalizing their dislike of an individual to the entire sex? All of the above? None of the above?

Unfortunately, some of the people they on a given side are Islamophobes presented as experts/scholars (some are scholars, but still—e.g. Ayan Hirsi Ali, Daniel Pipes, etc.) Even so, it’s good to watch because you learn how to rebut them effectively.

Unfortunately, some of the people they on a given side are Islamophobes presented as experts/scholars (some are scholars, but still—e.g. Ayan Hirsi Ali, Daniel Pipes, etc.) Even so, it’s good to watch because you learn how to rebut them effectively.

Obviously, I’m primarily interested in discussions about Islam & Muslims, however there are lots of other interesting looking debates about things like religion, foreign policy, ethics, ect.)

I think the men you’re asking about hate and fear what they can’t control, and to them, women represent that lack of power.

Presumably these guys don’t control a lot of things. Why settle on women as their one area of control? (I know. We’re handy and there is historical precedent.)

I enjoy Intelligence Squared debates too. I’m not sure they’d get anywhere with Star Wars v. Star Trek because the winner is the one who changes the most people’s minds. I think the opinions on that topic is pretty much set in stone.

I’m no fan of Dana Loesch, but I want her to trounce Chuckles. I want him to get his ass kicked by a woman as punishment for his misogyny and also because I don’t like women being targeted for being women.

UpChuck isn’t going after Loesch for being wrong, as our Charles has done, he’s attacking her because of her gender.

re: #104 calochortus

I’m probably asking the wrong people since I haven’t noticed misogyny here, but why do men hate/fear women?
Are we just a handy group they want to dominate? Do we have magical powers they fear? Do they want our sweet, sweet bodies so much they can’t bear the fact they don’t control us? Are they generalizing their dislike of an individual to the entire sex? All of the above? None of the above?

The men in my life are no help here because they all rather like women…

I’m going to explain this from the POV of a really terrible, instinctual male. Imagine someone like an angry priest or preacher from the Earth’s tropical insanity belt.

It’s got nothing to do with “women” because in a sense, you aren’t recognized as a woman. You’re a vagina. You create heirs and provide a place to get off. You just happen to be shaped like a person, and need feeding and upkeep.

Darkest, deepest (and sometimes not-so-deep) male instinct is to be the legal owner of your hardware, with absolute control over who (or what) goes into and out of it, and at what times. We want to be able to go in at leisure, as sole owner of the fee simple estate that is your lady parts. We want babies come out when we want them.

Stripped down to its purest essence, that’s the issue. Anything that threatens this model of genital control must be banned, burned, and destroyed, using every prohibition at our fingertips, from the religious writing to the gun or the knife.

Every right-wing preacher yammering about woman’s place in a proper Chrischun home, every dirtbag who kills his ex and her new boyfriend and all his kids, every fatwa-issuing dickhead in the desert hells of the world, every c-word-spewing anti-feminist twitter troll, every misogynist falling anywhere on the spectrum of sexism, is calling back to this fundamental, instinctive view of the female, whether they realize it or not.

I’m no anthropologist but I can only imagine that it’s rooted in biology, or some primitive evolutionary social factor dating back hundreds of thousands of years or more. And not every culture in the world sees things this way - it can be unlearned or ignored - but enough men have this in their hearts somewhere that it’s pretty much a permanent factor in gender relations, even now.

In my opinion? For a lot of men being men is the only thing they have. It’s the only advantage they hold in life and it is disappearing on them.

So they strike out at the people they regard as gaining power at their expense. It’s why I refer to Men’s Rights Associations as Men’s Power Associations.

This is a fine demonstration of the difference between power and freedom. Power regards any other type of power as a danger to itself. Freedom is never threatened by other freedoms.

I’m no anthropologist either, but I think you’re probably right, or pretty close to it. Barring modern advances in medicine, such as in vitro fertilization, I’ve long suspected that it has to do with the fact that a woman always knows her offspring is hers because it came out of her body, therefore her genetic material gets passed on no matter what.

Not so for a man—he can’t be sure unless he has 100% control over a woman’s reproductive organs 100% of the time, hence the often extreme punishments for adultery and things like honor killings.

I’m sure that is some of it, but the idea that women contribute to survival only through reproduction is a fairly recent First World interpretation of the facts. Something like 80% of the calories in primitive societies are provided by women. Men provide the protein which is also important. Partnership is an important part of survival (rugged individualistic mythology not withstanding.)

Anyway, it will probably remain a mystery.

That’s true. A culture of partnership can lead to a completely different outcome, and maybe the hateful shit put on women is a recent innovation of so-called Judeo-Christian culture. It’s like a very nasty piece of old Israelite tribal patriarchy was grafted over and remains even in our modern world.

I think this instinct towards control is actually very weak, and is almost optional. In a cultural situation where you have to rely on women - say, a small tribe with a lot of women members where women handle all the child-rearing, or in a culture where women stand up and say “F that noise, I’m a person!” the control fetish can crumble pretty quickly. In a secular society, when divine terrorism dissolves, the only thing enforcing suppression of women’s rights is individual male violence and harassment.

Or the GOP. :P

I’m just thinking aloud here really. I’m a guy myself, and raised with a little bit of old-school WASP misogyny, but mainly I’ve figured these things from looking at other men behaving like a-holes and asking myself “Just what the F is their problem, really? What are they on about?”

Feminism isn’t some big terrible bogey-woman out to castrate all men. It’s really just women saying “We’re people too.” IMO.
