Tech Note: A Regular Expression to Extract the ASIN Product Code From Any Amazon URL

So much fun it must be ASIN

Every once in a while I come up with a bit of code that might be useful to other programmers, and here’s one of those bits — a regular expression that extracts the ASIN product code from almost any Amazon product URL, including URLs from non-US Amazon stores. (It doesn’t handle pages of search results or other index pages, however.)

I use this at LGF to rewrite links to Amazon and add our affiliate ID to the link, so if someone clicks the link we get a small percentage of the purchase price when they buy something.

This code used to be a series of regular expressions that matched each type of URL, but I was looking at it this week and realized it might be possible to condense the whole process down to just one regex. And after extensive testing, I think I may have gotten pretty close to a universal Amazon ASIN extractor. (I searched Google, and couldn’t find anything this good online.)

In this PHP code, I used the x modifier to let me split the regex across multiple lines with comments and indenting. I also used ~ for the regular expression delimiter so all the forward slashes don’t need to be escaped. These two steps make the code much more readable, but if you use this regex with a language that doesn’t allow you to change the delimiter you’ll need to insert a backslash before each forward slash.

(Notice that I used non-capturing groups for everything except the ASIN product ID.)

$regex = '~
(?:www\.)? # optionally starts with www.
	ama?zo?n\. # also allow shortened amzn.com URLs
	(?:
com # match all Amazon domains
		|
		ca
		|
		co\.uk
		|
		co\.jp
		|
		de
		|
		fr
	)
	/
(?: # here comes the stuff before the ASIN
exec/obidos/ASIN/	# the possible components of a URL
		|
		o/
		|
		gp/product/
		|
		(?: # the dp/ format may contain a title
(?:[^"\'/]*)/	# anything but a slash or quote
		)? # optional
		dp/
		| # if short format, nothing before ASIN
	)
([A-Z0-9]{10}) # capture group $1 contains the ASIN
(?: # everything after the ASIN
		(?:/|\?|\#) # beginning with /, ? or #
(?:[^"\'\s]*) # everything up to quote or white space
	)? # optional
~isx';

Here’s a bit of code that puts this regex to work and inserts our affiliate ID into the reconstructed link:

$text = preg_replace($regex, 'www.amazon.com/dp/$1/?tag=littlegreenfo-20', $text);

And here’s what this regular expression looks like when condensed down to one gnarly line:

$regex = '~(?:www\.)?ama?zo?n\.(?:com|ca|co\.uk|co\.jp|de|fr)/(?:exec/obidos/ASIN/|o/|gp/product/|(?:(?:[^"\'/]*)/)?dp/|)(B[A-Z0-9]{9})(?:(?:/|\?|\#)(?:[^"\'\s]*))?~isx';

If you run this regular expression against the following URL:

http://www.amazon.com/Man-High-Castle/dp/B00RSGFRY8/ref=sr_1_1?s=instant-video&ie=UTF8&qid=1421879835&sr=1-1&keywords=the%20man%20in%20the%20high%20castle

You end up with this:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RSGFRY8/?tag=littlegreenfo-20

One has to reflect that the goalies must not like the All Star game as much as the forwards do.

(The score is already 3-3 and we are still in the first period.)

I don’t really do the code thing, too much stuff for my already cluttered mind.
And yet…
It still makes more sense to me than Sarah Palin’s arglebargle yesterday.

What’s really sad is that, despite having almost no experience coding, I can still make more sense out of your expression than anything that comes out of Sarah Palin’s mouth…

Very nice! Also nice that you’re willing to share the results of your hard work.

Nice commenting BTW! Much better than I’m used to seeing and I’ve looked at a lot of code. They are actually helpful in following the code; I know how difficult it is to write comments that are actually helpful.

Oh, and …

My regular expression tends to be a scowl…;)

But I shop at Amazon a lot, and always use the LGF Associate button, so I guess it’s all good.

What is it about this image that causes it to be used in so many online clickbait scams?

Also, “emotionally sexy”?

I feel bad for her, because you know she wasn’t paid much for that shoot compared to the amount being raked in by the assholes who have licensed that photo for their online shit-weaselry. This is why I find so much of the stock industry to be creepsauce and predatory.

This is like the hockey version of the silly sportsball game next week.

With a band. On the ice.

Apparently the mosh pit is goalies in pads.

(They wouldn’t pull this at Stanley Cup games. The fans have no patience for that.)

Well, the arena looks good in the image.

It is a beautiful arena. They built it right, it fits in with the surroundings and added a lot to this city.

Very well appointed too. Lots of wrought iron, terrazzo floors, brass flourishes, etc. All brick exterior, with classic multi-pane windows like a classic old factory. Fits the classic look of this town, the older sections especially. Inside the seats are all a dark union blue and it really accents the lighting on the ice. The ice surface glows.

Good for concerts too I understand. I just haven’t been to one in Nationwide.

As much as I enjoy live music, I stopped going to concerts in arenas. Most have such bad acoustics it’s difficult to actually hear the instruments. Add to that the tendencies of a lot of sound folks to increase the volume of the instruments over time to get around the muddiness and you end up with painful sound pressure levels. Yuck.

Concerts in small venues are so much nicer acoustically and also allow the artists and audience to truly interact.

Best of all, in a small venue you can actually watch as the instruments are played. Been lots of times where I see guitarists play something and realized it’s much simpler than I imagined. Or conversely, watched them play something and thought “Wow!”.

Finally got around to reading George Packer’s profile of Angela Merkel in the December 1, 2014 issue of The New Yorker. Some things I learned about her:

Merkel (age 60) was an East German
Merkel is fluent in Russian
Merkel is a scientist specializing in quantum chemistry
Merkel is very wily. You do not cross the Merkelnator and get very far in German politics
Merkel’s public oratory is as dull as dishwater
In being all things to all things to all people, excepting extremists on both sides of the aisle, Merkel has made party politics in Germany moribund, if not unnecessary
Merkel is much more interesting than I thought she was

Well worth the read.

While the All Star Game is no place for a goalie, the state of the art of goaltending is atrocious. For God’s sake, if you’re a goalie, your job is to get hit. If this nurswing thing falls through, I’m going to open a goaltending school and I’m going to put fire ants inside the pads around the kneecaps. These guys go down faster than a Fishtown madam. Here is a tech-related question for anyone who might be able to help me out with a suggestion:

As Apple has decided I can no longer have an iPod with enough capacity to hold my entire library, I would like to find a solution to be able to listen to music wirelessly from my desktop iMac through headphones. Obviously, as I currently listen to mp3s with an iPod and earbuds, I am not a mega audiophile.

It seems like Bluetooth would be the way to go My concern is that my place is large enough for me to regularly exceed the maximum range for this. Having never used Bluetooth headphones I am not sure. Can anyone shed any light on this and/or offer an alternative solution?

60 SteveMcGaziBolaGate  Jan 25, 2015 4:03:46pm

The other three major all star games work. You can play those games at an intensity level that make the risk of injury lower. Football is always a game where somebody can fall on your knee, or a frayed ligament gives up the ghost after one cut too many.

From bluetooth.com:

Range
Range is application specific and although a minimum range is mandated by the Core Specification, there is not a limit and manufacturers can tune their implementation to support the use case they are enabling.

Range may vary depending on class of radio used in an implementation:

Class 3 radios - have a range of up to 1 meter or 3 feet
Class 2 radios - most commonly found in mobile devices - have a range of 10 meters or 33 feet
Class 1 radios - used primarily in industrial use cases - have a range of 100 meters or 300 feet

18 years ago I wasn’t too shabby at regex myself, but that was 18 years ago and I’ve totally submerged that knowledge since in bigger priorities (like SIP protocols, etc.) I could probably practice a bit and get it back ( like I am my GO skills,) but right now it’s not calling my name.

Great work Charles, few people except regex gurus realize how powerfully they can threshold and filter and the speed combined with compaction that they create.

I figured I was not going to be happy with Bluetooth.

I am an Android phone guy…all of my other tech is Apple, but I am one of the last troglodytes who requires a tactile phone keyboard. What would it take to stream to an iPod touch?

You could stream to an Android phone too, using AirPlay. I haven’t set it up, but it looks like there are apps/tutorials on the net. Here’s a reasonable looking summary.

If it proves to be too problematic, I can’t imagine that it’s too hard to get the streaming set up with the iPod Touch, but this would dodge having to buy new hardware. Then you can stick with earbuds or investigate Bluetooth headphones connected to your phone.

Etymology

The word is a pseudo-Latin neologism (real Latin: adamans, adamantem [accusative]) based on the English noun and adjective adamant (and the derived adjective adamantine) with the neo-Latin suffix “-ium,” implying a metal. The adjective has long been used to refer to the property of impregnable, diamondlike hardness, or to describe a very firm/resolute position (e.g. He adamantly refused to leave). The noun adamant has long been used to designate any impenetrably or unyieldingly hard substance and, formerly, a legendary stone/rock or mineral of impenetrable hardness and with many other properties, often identified with diamond or lodestone.[2] Adamant and the literary form adamantine occur in works such as Prometheus Bound,[3] the Aeneid, The Faerie Queene, Paradise Lost, Gulliver’s Travels, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Lord of the Rings, and the film Forbidden Planet (as “adamantine steel”), all of which predate the use of adamantium in Marvel’s comics.

It’s probably the material of the Krells’ doors.

Some Forbidden Planet trivia from Wikipedia:

The animated sequences of Forbidden Planet, especially the attack of the “Id Monster”, were created by the veteran animator Joshua Meador, who was lent out to MGM by Walt Disney Pictures. According to a “Behind the Scenes” featurette on the film’s DVD, a close look at the creature shows it to have a small goatee beard, suggesting its connection to Dr. Morbius, the only character with this physical feature…

I’ve seen the flick many times, but never noticed a goatee before.

Roger Simon critiques Sarah Palin’s (and the rest of the occupants of the GOP clown van) performance yesterday.

Sarah Palin, who has been teasing the press with hints she might actually run for president, appeared to end much hope of that Saturday by delivering a 33-minute speech of such incoherence that even veteran Palin-watchers were puzzled.

Some sample lines from Palin:

“Screw the left and Hollywood!”

“Coronation, rinse, repeat.”

Obama “is so over it. America, he’s just not that into you.”

“The man can only ride you when your back is bent.”

I would provide some context, but there wasn’t any. It is possible she was improperly inflated.

In the clown car, you have to check for that regularly.

Two to three feet of snow. Okay. I take it back. I’d actually prefer the shitstorm that Loesch and Chuckles were tossing back and forth.

Oh who am I kidding? I’d take any number of feet of snow over the baffling band of baboons that are the right wing howlers.

Blizzard warning in effect from tomorrow at 1pm through Wed. 2-3 feet widespread over NYC metro into New England. If these predictions hold, we’re talking about historic storm totals and NESIS levels.

In comparison, the most crippling storm under the NESIS level (the 1993 blizzard) had the highest snow totals just west of NYC. This storm is pushing the highest snow tallies directly over NYC.

It may end up with a storm map that’s a mix of the 1993 storm and a 1996 storm that ranked 2d all time under the NESIS scale.

The NYC NWS is also predicting hurricane force winds just off the South Shore of Long Island. That’s 74+ mph winds. Seas are going to be cranking too. They’re also predicting coastal flooding as well.

I’m already figuring that I’ll be working from home Tuesday, and possibly Wednesday as crews dig out the City. Right now, schools are open tomorrow, and no decision has been made official on closures Tuesday, but it looks like everyone (DeBlasio, Cuomo, etc.) are all leaning towards everything shutting down after tomorrow’s PM rush hour.

So as I periodically do, I do a search. Found it at @ the Walmart website. Bought a case with 5.00 shipping.

Kinda funny, it was in a box, in a box, in a box. The main box has made in Jamaica & everything on it. Saved that.

Well, to repent for my sins, I just completed the satisfaction survey. All the questions, waiting for the chance to comment.

154 lawhawk  Jan 25, 2015 5:24:20pm

Oh, and one more thing.

It’s a warning…

Winter…

Is…

Coming…

/well of course it’s coming. It’s here. Winter. Happens every year. And severe weather like this isn’t proof or disproof of global warming, though the fact that a warmer atmosphere holds more moisture than a cooler one is an indisputable fact. Higher temperature variations also means stronger pressure gradients, which directly ties to winds, and that also affects what kind of severe weather is seen, and its duration may increase as well.

But global warming is just that - global. Temperature average for globe is up. So just because a local area is lower doesn’t disprove the global temps. And also proving global warming is going on? 14 of past 15 years have been record warm. That’s not just a coincidence. It’s a trend. A very bad one.

Did I just hear adamantium mentioned in Forbidden Planet?

According to Wikipedia, yes:

Adamantium is a fictional metal alloy in comic books published by Marvel Comics and is best known as the substance bonded to the character Wolverine’s skeleton and claws. Was first seen the the movie Forbidden Planet in 1956.Adamantium was created by writer Roy Thomas and artists Barry Windsor-Smith and Syd Shores in Marvel Comics’ Avengers #66 (July 1969), which presents the substance as part of the character Ultron’s outer shell.[1] In the stories where it appears, the defining quality of adamantium is its practical indestructibility.

and

he term “adamantium steel” was used in the film “Forbidden Planet” released in 1956, a full ten years before the Marvel use.

My son informed me that “inspectors” came by his duplex, so I looked up his address on the ‘net and sure enough, it’s been for sale since 3/13 and reduced a couple of times since then. One two punch from the President today:

The first will get the GOP frothing that he’s going to drive oil prices up (even as the GOP says that higher oil prices are a good thing, but everything the GOP is saying about oil prices is directly related to price. If prices drop, it’s bad b/c of Obama. If they rise, it’s b/c of Obama and it’s bad.)

The second is a big win for GE and Westinghouse that are looking at nuclear deals with India. It’ll be a big win for the environment too, since India is behind where China is on modernization, and its energy needs are no less severe.

I’m sorry the characterization of the LA Department of Power and Water does not meet with your agreement, but Owen’s Valley/Owen’s Lake and the fact that it took a court order to preserve Mono Lake does not give me any sense that they give a shit about the rest of the state.

That’s like saying that Proximo the Gladiator knew Marcus Aurelius, all because the Emperor tapped him on the shoulder with a wooden gladius granting him his freedom.

Joan Baez covered that song over 50 years ago. It’s a weird song, about a woman whose wealthy parents marry her off to a young boy, the opposite of the usual old man marries young girl scenario.

Interesting. Bob Dylan also recorded a nice version during the Basement Tapes sessions.

BACK FENCE LAMENT
Wolfen cry to chilly moon;
Pawmark, clawmark, swooping tune;
Boundary marks on sentinel trees;
Once, we know, we wandered free.
Confined by wire, cribbed by wood,
We sing the memories of our blood.

The reporter I contacted is very responsible and has covered consent issues admirably in the past. The meltdown I witnessed and documented was by a young woman who asserts she was having an affair with a well connected right wing publisher. It spanned the last couple of weeks, and there was 5 months of prior activity on the account. Her name is too common for me to know who she is for sure, and get the police / social services to do a wellness check.

I don’t care about the story, it’s trash, just want to make sure she’s okay. Sounded like she was drinking herself to death, mixing pills. 10 days ago she tweeted “Puking up blood is awesome,” and “I’d write you a suicide note, but you won’t read my fucking emails.”

Tried. I got the city but can’t get anybody in the right age range as her bio avi. Pretty common name, tons of false positives.

This isn’t the kind of shit I do. I want to hand it off, but like I said, need some pretty ironclad assurances of trust first. That’s why an investigative reporter with an established history of responsible reporting and ethical behavior was my first question.

Unfortunately the police and social services aren’t set up to track down random Twitter shit from people who don’t even know who the hell they’re looking for.

211 is a networked social service referral system. It is active in most states, and can find whatever resources are available in the area you’ve narrowed. A lot depends on the size and developmental level of the city involved. They might get your info to a volunteer org, or a public health shop.
