Richard Muller: I Was Wrong on Climate Change

Yale Climate Forum - Peter Sinclair
Science • Views: 31,437

I’m thinking back to all the climate trolls who used to throw this guy in my face when arguing with them…

YouTube

Richard Muller founded the Berkeley Earth Surface Temperature Project after declaring himself skeptical about climate change. He was funded in part by the Koch Brothers.
He found out what other scientists have known for decades. The Earth is warming, and we’re doing it.

And now, of course, the conspiracy theories will begin about how he was “bought off,” or threats were made against his life, or he was in some way forced to recant. That’s assuming they don’t try to argue that he’s either going senile or he’s looking to cash in on that sweet, sweet government hoax money.

Bought off, by someone wealthier than the Koch brothers and energy companies that want to keep their gravy train flowing, no matter the amount of damage being done to the environment.

Glad this guy admits his mistake and that we are, in fact, contributing to global warming.

Faster please.

That’s impressive. He’s going to be pilloried by his former allies for this of course. Volcanos, Solar Variability, all the favorite “excuses” of the RWNJs are all accounted for.

Science, the truth is out there…

If I remember the Richard Muller research correctly, it was even so that the mainstream scientists looking into climate change hand underestimated the effects, i.e. that the situation is graver than the scientists believe.

A federal court ruled Monday that Virginia ex-Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) may remain free while he appeals his convictions for federal corruption, the Associated Press reported.

Meanwhile, McDonnell’s Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to produce a Julian Assange bio-flick starring himself has so far garnered $12.89.

Mr Carson took his objectionable comments one step further during a Q&A session, according to the Hill, while commenting on lawsuits against bakeries that refused to bake same-sex wedding cakes.

He said: “What I have a problem with is when people try to force people to act against their beliefs because they say ‘they’re discriminating against me.’

“So they can go right down the street and buy a cake, but no, let’s bring a suit against this person because I want them to make my cake even though they don’t believe in it… Which is really not all that smart because they might put poison in that cake.”

The Hill notes his comments were met by “chuckles from some of his staff and dead silence from the journalists in the room”.

I believe he was largely funded by the Koch brothers actually and they hoped he would prove climate scientists incorrect because he was so skeptical himself.

Other than online, the only time I saw this on TV was on the daily show. (This was more than a year ago. The only aspect mentioned was the confirmation of temperature increase. It could be that all the additional analysis ruling out factors other than CO2 is new.)

Put some bread in the oven. Not sure how it will turn out… it was some old stock and had fermented WAY past what I usually allow. It was too soft to form into a boule, so I added some more flour, kneaded my ‘no-knead’ dough, and put it into a loaf pan.

I can tell from the smell it’s going to be a strong sourdough if it comes out ok. Worst case, I’m out a little bit of flour and the energy to cook it.

On the plus side, my new backup Scuba regulator came in today…. not as nice as a harp, but it’s a solid piece of construction. Looking forward to testing it out in a couple of weeks.

Thing about Muller is, he’s been an attention whore (well, maybe that’s too strong of a word) for quite a while.

Think about the title of his book: Physics for Future Presidents. I’m all for popularizing science, but it’s the “for… Presidents” part that really makes me wonder if there’s not a bit of banner fluffing going on there.

Plus, he’s got his own company that specializes in … energy:
mullerandassociates.com

So whenever he’s out grabbing headlines, he’s also doing publicity to sell the services of his own company.

To me the bottom line is this: there’s more interest inof selling the story of “Climate Change” then there is in actually changing our lives to the point required to mitigate against it.

NWS has updated storm predictions for NYC metro. 24-36 for NYC and Long Island, 18-24 for most of northeastern NJ and into the Hudson Valley.

There are school closures all the way up to Albany; my alma mater cancelled classes tomorrow. State of emergency all across region, and all mass transit will be shutting down later this evening.

Meanwhile, the right wing is going batcrap insane over the President in India. Not because he worked out a deal with India on nuclear energy (which is huge), but because he was chewing nicotine gum. That apparently set off the right wingers into a frenzy. Insane. Batcrap insane.

Not all the stops, but Flushing is a terminal station. NY Penn, Hoboken, Secaucus, and other major hub stations will see crowds. The train I was on was delayed 10-15 minutes because there were more people getting on to our train than we were able to accommodate safely. They had to call the NJ Transit police to help get the car doors closed to get us underway. There were major crowds in Secaucus.

It’ll be like that elsewhere, and NY Penn was particularly bad earlier - with a rush of people coming early, and trying to beat the mass transit system closures.

Praise him!

At least one of the skeptics was willing to interpret scientific data and draw his conclusion accordingly. And if that made him change his opinion about the matter, that’s laudable. Not stonewalling the elephant in the room. The climate is changing. Over here in the Netherlands we are currently experiencing the third consecutive soft winter. As a result parts of the country have been plagued by an epidemic of mice. Large surfaces have been destroyed by these rodents.

(Perhaps a good outcome will be that the amount of owls will rise too, since at least for them there’s no food shortage.)

The Trashmen played last weekend at a wingding for the MN Public Radio rock station’s 10 year anniversary. I looked for a video of the event but can’t find one on their website. There was an article about them in the Mpls. paper and the thing that jumped out at me was that they now all have anti-Obama bumperstickers on their cars. Fuck them.

Who are all these random Twitter banking accounts, smart traders, fractal alerts, etc who think following me for a day at a time means I’m going to follow them back, like ever?

I guess that works for some people, because they’re all about the clutter. I have a firm rule, you can either be interesting, interact with me in some kind of meaningful capacity, or GTFO.

I’ve got some jackass who follows me about once a week for some reason.

Honestly I go thru and edit my follow list pretty often. How some of these assholes follow 2 or 3 thousand people and pretend to be able to follow anything is beyond me.

What? You don’t need an app on your phone that asks you every 15 minutes whether or not you need to order a pizza?

This is not the original. It’s part of a sketch by Dutch comedian Andre van Duin. This is the complete clip.

That was 42 yrs ago. They’re probably all as old as I am, just not as smart politically. : ) Two of the band members no longer there (the singer died in 1989).

They stole the material for that from the Rivingtons, who threatened them with a lawsuit and subsequently gave the Rivingtons credit for the song.

So yeah, white guys stealing from Black guys. What else is new?

Is that for real? As in really the King Great Whackjob’s Twitter account? Because I admit I can’t always tell with some of the nutjobs…..

Hey, Dr.?

I was just watching a documentary on The Ottomans. I hadn’t realized that the first Ottomans were Sufis.

Thought of you at once. Very cool.

As I recall, building codes in WA and OR haven’t accounted for the fact that the seismic risk there is just as bad as in CA in the long run.

The difference is that CA has large earthquakes about every century, while the Cascades has uber-large earthquakes every 500 years or so. Kind of hard to deal with that in a building code.

To be fair to Muller, Berkeley Earth addressed a lot of the complaints people have had about the temperature record for years: lack of random sampling, opaque homogenization methods, etc. BEST is now the most thorough temperature analysis done and the most transparent. It puts global warming on a much stronger observational foundation. That’s something the deniers miss. The scientific criticism of global warming data have usually ended up strengthening the case.
