As a kid, the Fantastic Four were my favorite Marvel characters, but the recent films weren’t really that great. So I’m glad to see a reboot in the works, with an apparent emphasis on the science fiction angle that attracted me to the Fantastic Four in the first place — and we can also look forward to a right wing freakout, because in this version the Human Torch is… black.

And speaking of right wing freakouts, first out of the racist gate is our boy the Ginger Avenger.

Right — because there are so few white men in the movies these days.

I was a huge Batman, Spider-Man and X-Men fan back in the day because of the animated shows back in the ’90s (probably only read two or three comics my whole life), but I’ve become a huge fan of Guardians, the Avengers, and Captain America films.

There’s a treasure trove of good material for stories in comics, if the movie makers learn how to use it. Marvel seems to be getting the hang of it.

Fictional characters have always been, in part, a reflection of the real world in which their creators lived and, like that real world, are constantly changing and evolving.

I remember when there were rumors of casting a black Spiderman in Amazing Spider-Man and people went crazy over that too.

Back in my kids’ days, comics were the fantasy of the eternal white hero idolatry.

It has changed, somewhat, but I don’t see these figures in the toy aisles. comicvine.com

A black batman would be difficult to pull off, if the basic Bruce Wayne origin story is kept. A black family as old Gotham money would be tough to explain. On the other hand, it would be very impressive to pull this off (i.e., the death or glory mode of storytelling).

I’d approach it by modernizing the story. Place the murder in the mid to late 80s and have it take place following a football game. Instead of them being old money the father could merely be a highly successful businessman or perhaps a professor.

I know you follow NHL Hockey. Did you see where the Columbus Blue Jackets are gonna be without Officer Bobrovsky for 4-6 weeks with a groin injury? Real bummer. The poor team has had nothing but injuries this season.

But, they are up 4-2 over Washington right now with 9 minutes to go, and the backup goalie doing a fairly decent job.

The season might still be without making the playoffs though. It’ll take a huge 75% winning percentage or so to get in. Now without Bobrovsky.

It has been a harsh year with injuries and sickness for a lot of teams. :( I’m glad I got to see Officer Bob play earlier in the season!

Today’s news for me is that Martin Brodeur has finally really retired and will hopefully be back in NJ after he finishes his year with the Blues (he’s going to work front office now) and start training to be GM for the Devils. That’s my pipe dream, at least.

I basically pack snacks for any flight nowadays. Bag of trail mix and a few granola bars at a minimum. And usually a pack of gum to help with the ears regaining pressure equilibrium.

Its amusing to see Europeans talking about preserving their racial purity when, to put it bluntly, the better part of 2 millennia of their history consisted of invading and raping the shit out of their neighbors and anyone else they could get to.

That and the population of Europe is like 740 million, of that 11 million are non-white. About 13 million if you count Jews as “non-white”.
Real quick math puts Europe at being like 98% white.

But this is Chuckles we’re talking about, and he would rather that Hollywood (which is one of the nation’s cash cows) would leave billions on the table by not producing fare that people overseas might enjoy - like Michael Bay’s Transformers, which made serious coin in China. More and more movies are banking more box office overseas, and that trend will continue, and the studios have to take that into account.

All that said, the majority of movies are made by white guys, white guys get prime roles, and white guys are usually the heroes (or anti-hero) or protagonists.

Complexly, that’s not exactly wiping out the people, but the culture they bore. Early numbers are very hard to validate, so much so that it can be claimed that there are more descendants of First Peoples in the US than when we arrived. What’s missing is the wide variety of functioning tribes and nations—most survivors are in a few large groups. Killing a culture, even while dismissing the people, is a workable definition of genocide.

I was reading earlier today that Fox is in the very early stages of an X-Men TV series. AFAIK though, while Fox has the movie rights to X-Men, Marvel still holds the TV rights.

Depending on how serious Fox is about making the series, it could be a good opportunity for Marvel to do some horse trading and maybe get some rights back. Maybe reclaim Fantastic Four, especially if the new movie does poorly.

Conservatives of the mainstream right are over that, and most such people in fact like Samuel L. Jackson as the kick-ass star that he is.

But there are those on the far right who find Nick Fury as a black man intolerable, and not so much because he is visible as because Nick Fury is a character who wields power. The idea of a black man issue orders to Captain America and other white people is intolerable to those who feel that once given power black people will inevitably use it to attack white people.

CCJ is just another typical whiny what man loser these days. WAH WAH WAH they’re oppressing the poor white man. Let’s take a look at reality. The population of white men in the world as defined by the typical white male American (North American white males, non-Mediterranean or Crimean Europeans, and possibly including Russians/Slavs) account for about 5%-8% of the world’s population.

The Hollywood movie machine is an international business that must appeal to the world market. This means that Hollywood should really adjust its hiring talent to account for the 95% or so world population that is not a white male by the above definition. Using this method, we can see that Hollywood is still clearly extremely racist in favor of white men.

According to the modern Republican/Tea Party white male, the predominant , most important institution these days is “business comes first”, and whatever can exploit the most profit is the best solution for any problem. Thus, Hollywood should stop hiring white men at the current rate immediately, and adjust the casting down to 5% levels in order to accommodate the world market. It’s business, you know. Can’t argue with that.
