You’ll have to click to see this amazingly crazy email I received tonight from someone in Monterey, because it’s pretty damned disturbing, not to mention racist and antisemitic. Holocaust Remembrance Day always excites the lunatics.

Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Bring on the crazy.

Two stories today, both causing much butthurt for some white males sexist and bigotted dudebros…

1) New All-Female ‘Ghostbusters’ Cast Chosen
All female Ghostbusters have been cast and I say, why the hell not. I like the director, I love 2 of the 4 ladies, and the other 2 ladies particularly McKinnon are good on SNL. So I say again, why the hell not. Now if they bring along Sigourney Weaver and Annie Potts…I’ll be happy. From my understanding they could never get Bill Murray to sign on for an original cast reboot, and also RIP Harold Ramis. Original cast Ghostbuster with NO Igon…aint’ gonna work!

Dudebro butthurt level…5 out of 10?

2) Fantastic Four Trailer
The new Fantastic Four reboot released a trailer for the summer. In the reboot, the Human Torch will be played by Micheal P Jordan. Sue Storm and Johnny are supposed to be brother an sister. The new reboot Sue is White, Johnny is Black, so… Other than that, people seemed to love the first two FF so much, but um the Torch is now Cap’n America, and he was the best thing in the first. Jessica Alba nice to look at, but a HORRIBLE actress. At lease the new cast consist of some really good young talent. I mean Micheal P Jordan is a damn good actor. As for Human Torch being Black…so fuckin’ what? Marvel comics has SOOOOO many different universes with the same characters, that you could literally find a universe to darn near fit any number of reboots. Besides…once the Torch is “flame on” it’s the attitude and a good actor brings something good to an otherwise generic character…HELLO…Idris Elba as Heimdall in Thor!!!

Comic dudebro butthurt: 5 for “original” FF comic fans, a big ole…meh from those who’ve read the other universes.

Racist, “what if Shaft was played by a White actor” butthut: 11….and I LMBAO as they cry and kick their feet…bah.

IKR…but it never fails whenever this type of colorblind casting occurs the usual suspects always seem to go with “well what if Shaft was played by a white guy”..

first of all, who the hell even goes to Shaft as an example first. Secondly, what talking points maker when asked to find an example of bad colorblind casting OF FICTIONAL CHARACTERS, went…ooh…SHAFT! Cause I kid you not, go to any blog or entertainment site that mentions colorblind casting where a Black person is playing a “white character”, and you will find the Shaft comparison…I mean really, really?

No sense of irony, no understanding of art. The Right Wing, ladies and gentlemen.

“They made character so and so gay! They made character so and so lesbian/black/muslim! DEATH OF MURICUH!! WE’RE CRUMBLING!”

If these fucknuts actually knew anything about comics and superheroes they’d know that they get re-invented all the time to reflect the culture that produces them. How many times have the DC and Marvel multi-verses been re-shuffled and re-combined?

“They” made Green Lantern a black guy once. “They” sent Green Arrow and Green Lantern across America and dealt with drug addiction… Frank Miller basically has his own Earth in the DC Universe where Superman is doing Ronnie Reagan’s dirty work and Batman kills mutants… This stuff is all malleable and anybody who has an idea can write a story. “They” are just people making things up for fun and profit, which we all should enjoy.

Girl Ghostbusters just means a new way for the story to be funny. A new Fantastic 4 and one guy is brown-skinned? Great! The other movies sucked so bad, I don’t give a shit, the cast could be all black southern grandmas and I wouldn’t care.

Art is art. If you don’t like it, don’t watch it. It’s that goddamned simple.

“They” made Green Lantern a black guy once….Frank Miller basically has his own Earth in the DC Universe where Superman is doing Ronnie Reagan’s dirty work and Batman kills mutants.

Ironically, since the DC animated universe from the 1990’s and 2000’s was so popular, Jon Stewart (the black GL) is probably the most well known incarnation of the character.
Also, Batman doesn’t kill mutants. Those were rubber bullets (he swears).

Jeebus!
Prosecutors: Stanford Swimmer Raped Unconscious Woman in Public

A Stanford University swimmer was caught raping a drunk, unconscious woman near a fraternity house earlier this month, Santa Clara county prosecutors say.

According to reports, 19-year-old Brock Allen Turner was arrested early Jan. 18 when two students riding bikes across campus spotted him on top of an unconscious woman. They tackled him to the ground while another student called authorities, the LA Times reports.

Edit: Right on the heels of this:
Vanderbilt Football Players Found Guilty of Raping Unconscious Student

It only took a few hours for a Nashville jury to convict two former football players accused of raping an unconscious Vanderbilt student in a sickening attack captured on a cell phone video.

Brandon Vandenburg and Cory Batey were both charged with five counts of aggravated rape and two counts of aggravated sexual battery after university officials discovered surveillance camera footage of the men dragging an unconscious woman into a dorm room.

But until she saw cell phone video of the attack, the woman testified, she believed she had just passed out drunk and even tried to protect Vandenburg.

It sounds like either mental illness and/or drug addiction. Which hits close to home right now, sadly. We have a family member(on my husband’s side) who has OD’d FOUR times since the holidays on various pills that stupid doctors keep giving him. He walked out of rehab after 10 days last summer because he had it all figured out. Now he’s half delirious, refusing treatment and it’s to the point a doctor has had to step in and forcefully have him committed to a psych hospital unit. He lost his job as a truck driver for wrecking his rig, is losing his home, his 21 yr old daughter won’t have anything to do with him and his wife is barely hanging in there (I would have left years ago, he’s a mean asshole to her). He’s going to die. It’s that simple. He won’t quit using and no one can reach in there to help him because he doesn’t want help. It’s very heartbreaking.

Anyway, the language of that email sounds just like a conversation my husband tried to have with this family member a couple of weeks ago. He made no sense at all, to the point that my husband called the local police dept to make sure this person didn’t still have access to weapons. Turns out he did and they took the guns out of the house after his wife admitted she was scared to have them in the house. That email is from someone having some serious issues. Stay safe Charles.

We need more trained personnel and facilities for drugs and for mental illness in this country. We’re supposed to be this grade A number one country, right? So why then are there SO many unhappy people on so many medications? Something’s really, really wrong with this picture.

We didn’t have much of anything 100 years ago. America of 1915 was a third-rate power, most of its potential still untapped.

2nd rate, given how many dreadnaughts we had in service and building. Our army wasn’t much, but our navy was strong.

The flipside of that is that the 16th Amendment allowed the federal government to think it could do without the excise tax on liquor, thus helping to usher in the 18th Amendment and Prohibition. Proof that even good policy can have bad side-effects.

I’ll also note that while we were building two at a time, our per-vessel superiority over many European designs meant that by 1915 the USA already had a better battle line than France. And our Pennsylvania-class BBs and the just-laid down New Mexico-class were a match for any BBs save the British Queen Elizabeth-class.

As a side note, given what you wrote: The New Mexico-class was the first US dreadnought class with more than two ships. The third ship, the USS Idaho was financed in large part by the sale of two old predreadnaughts to Greece, with Idaho and her sister Mississippi taking the old ships’ names.

It was pretty easy to see how the text was generated—found a site that yields extremely similar output last night. The semi-gibberish blocks seem to be spit out between search results. The text from the one I hit included very many of the unusual words in the text Charles posted, though they are not as recursive and not in that ‘verse’ format.

This one that surfaced first is focused on music, popular in a lot of countries, some of them dicey. This is Google’s cache of search24news.com.

My guess is that somone grabbed a block from that or a similar site, altered to make it ‘poetic’ and somewhat syntactic, and forwarded it for reasons unfathomable.

Last night’s Google yield was in the middle of by a search on Patti Smith.

Not in my memory. There are two interesting organizations in Monterey that bring in a lot of ‘interesting’, bright people. The Defense Language Institute has a couple thousand students and instructors. The students are very busy, but the instructors are mostly native speakers drawn from all over the world. They might be interested in language games. The Naval Postgraduate School is there, as well. Once again a student body, perhaps looking for experiments to write up.

Quantity has a quality all of its own, as the Germans learned in both wars. While the US Navy really had neither a quantitative or qualitative advantage. Comparing it to the French Navy is sort of misleading, as while France was a major power, it had allowed its military prowess to slip due to thawing of relations with Britain.

But the sad fact is that this is probably how she is with no medication and no alcohol. She’s got so much word salad going that she can barely get out of her own way. Her speeches or speech patterns haven’t particularly changed since she was on the campaign trail in 2008.

This is who she is. Someone who is clueless about world events, plays the victim even as she’s victimizing others, and takes no responsibility for her own actions, like many right wingers do. In many respects, her words and deeds, are a fun-house mirror reflection of the right wing at large.

Well, Sheldon Silver is stepping down as Speaker, and Assembly Majority Leader Joe Morelle (D-Rochester) is taking over as interim speaker until elections are held February 10 for his replacement. This all makes sense, and I would expect to see a clean break from Silver as some members might want to see the Speaker come from somewhere outside NYC.

But the immediate need for the Speaker is to get the budget talks underway, and this year will see a different dynamic since Silver isn’t in the room.

Gov. Cuomo might try to press Democrats to get an upstate Speaker too, since it would help with his plans for revitalizing upstate communities, such as it is, but the center of Democrats’ support is NYC, so it’s likely that the next speaker will be from downstate.

Woke up this morning to the sound of distant popping sounds. Then I saw the headline. It was misogynist heads aspolding!

(The Hollywood Reporter)The all-new, all-female Ghostsbusters are here.

Melissa McCarthy, who was already in talks for one of the leads, has signed on for the Paul Feig-directed reboot, and the studio is now negotiating with Kristen Wiig, as well as “Saturday Night Live” players Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. Negotiations are ongoing but the quartet are expected to sign on as the specter-seeking, poltergeist-punishing and phantom-phollowing foursome in the reboot, which is eyeing a summer shoot in New York.

Pratt’s already rebooting/extending the Jurassic Park franchise, and he’s got his fantasy/scifi cred established with Guardians of the Galaxy, so from a business standpoint, it makes sense to consider him for the iconic role.

But do we really need another Indiana Jones movie? Disney’s bottom line says YES, so we’re getting it, whether we want it or not (Disney now controls the Lucasfilm rights, which is why they’re doing it - and it extends their copyright on the characters further, and if there’s anything Disney knows how to do, it’s control their copyright).

They play up how many they have, they talk about how having them gives them weight on issues that “matter,” but they get all sorts of ticked off when the party members they’re so “proud” to have stray off the party line.

I find that kids have to be college age these days before they will do grunt work to make money. And, by then, they can get a job, so they don’t want to work when they are “off-work”.

*sigh*

Lots of factors:

1) Professionalization of casual labor, as noted above (“guys with snowblowers and pickup trucks”)

2) Increased time demands on K-12 age kids (homework, activities)

3) Reduction in adult availability to find and supervise kids doing such work:

3a) face it, if you hire a 12-year old to mow your lawn, you’re going to have to go out and get the bits he didn’t get to

3b) a lot of hiring kids in this way comes from knowing your neighbors (and their kids)

etc. etc.

DEACE: Do our rights really come from God? Or do they come from the mob, do they come from the state? (because, I guess there are no other choices)

CARSON: I think you’re right about that. The Constitution actually [inaudible] this message. It says that those kinds of matters are in the jurisdiction of the state. That is not a federal issue. And, what the president and what the Supreme Court needs to reiterate is the states have a mechanism whereby they can determine the will of the people. It’s called ballot referendum. It has been done multiple times already. 32 states have indicated that marriage is between a man and a woman, and a few judges have come and overturn that. That, as far as I’m concerned, is unconstitutional. And Congress actually has oversight of what they call the inferior courts, everything below the Supreme Court. That’s where those overturns have come. When judges do not carry out their duties in an appropriate way, our Congress actually has the right to reprimand or remove them. Most people don’t know that because they don’t know the Constitution.

Snow shoveling was one of my standard chores: grass mowing in the summer, leaf raking in the fall, turning over garden beds in the spring.

My father didn’t buy a snowblower until two of his three children had left for college. And the third was on a winter sport high school team and didn’t get home until about 5pm. (This was living in northern NY state in an area that got about 40-50” of snow a year - and it didn’t melt very much.)

I *hated* that machine. Pull-start engine like a lawn mower and I could never get it started. Would try for 10 minutes and then eventually give up. My father would get home and it would start on the first pull. >_<

That’s because you primed it just right for him to get it going. I remember mowing the lawn with a gas mower, and it was a pain to start with the pull start (first world problems).

After we bought our own house, I’ve gotten both an electric mower and snowblower (just sufficient for the area I have to mow/clear). Don’t have to deal with gas cans and all the maintenance issues with either. But neither does nearly as good a job as a gas mower or snowblower. I’ll take it though.

The BJS report comes amidst President Obama’s latest pitch to prosecute and deport “felons, not families” through his executive action, with his administration set to protect upwards of five million undocumented immigrants from deportation. Obama’s executive action could potentially blunt the number of immigration-related arrests going forward, especially since two-thirds of the country’s population live within the 100-mile boundary surrounding the nation’s exterior “border zone.” Immigrants living in the “border zone” are theoretically provided an immigration hearing, but the Obama administration has increasingly deported people in the “border zone” through a process known as “expedited removal.” Those caught up in expedited removal could include immigrants who have lived in the country for years. As of 2012, 62 percent of undocumented immigrants have lived in the country for more than a decade, the Pew Research Center found.

282 lawhawk  Jan 28, 2015 8:26:18am

The Israel-Lebanon border just got hot again. Two Israeli soldiers and a Spanish peacekeeper were killed. The Israeli soldiers were killed when their convoy came under attack. The peacekeeper was killed in Israel’s reprisal attacks against Hizbullah positions in the Sheeba Farms area of Lebanon.

All this comes days after an Israeli airstrike either incidentally or on purpose killed major figures in Hizbullah and an Iranian general inside Syria. Hizbullah had been threatening reprisals since then, and now the area is on the brink of further violence.

It’s possible that this is a way to draw Israel further into the violence in Syria, but Israel has largely stayed on the sidelines - attacking scattered targets over the past several years that have been identified as weapons transfers between Iran and/or Syria and Hizbullah.

Israel blames the Lebanese government for any fire directed at Israel, even if Hizbullah operates semi-autonomously/independent of the government in Beirut.

Israel is apparently sending more tanks and troops to the Golan as a precaution. IDF forces are also redoubling efforts to identify whether Hizbullah has built tunnels under the border. Locals have reported hearing sounds that could be related to tunneling activities but so far nothing has been found.

Got a live anti-vaxxer troofer here. If you believe in vaccination, you’re a member of a cult. And they’re spouting off bs stats that the vaccines fail 85% of the time or worse.

Too bad they’ve got that backwards. A single dose vaccine will give at least 85% protection, 2 doses is close to 99%, but there’s always a chance that someone will get measles even with vaccination because it’s not 100% effective.

But your odds of getting measles increases without taking it.

Oh, and he’s a troofer. Should have seen that coming. Blocked.

I just caught up to this thread a bit, so a couple mentions…

Loved the Uptown Funk High School video. Mr. Teacher is way cool. And in good shape! I wonder how long they worked that all up and was the drama department and cheerleader/dance team involved to help out.

I’d love to know if the groups of students were homeroom classes, or the teachers classes, etc. Pretty cool And the fact that it was all from Texas…makes it ever cooler. I hope it upset the more conservative types.

New York and points just west and south missing out on the blizzard and people upset and causing weather forecasters and politicians to explain and apologize for being wrong. “Get a F’n life!” You’d bitch no matter what. In fact all you do is bitch. You’re worthless!

Damn, there sure are a bunch of Americans that are a miserable lot these days. Bitch, bitch, bitch…that’s all they are good for. I thought we were a country of rugged individuals. (Did I just type that?) Pffft. All some of them can do is flap the jaw and make Palin-like noises. Stuff a sock in them.

Femnazi…do all men go into that ‘man box’ with the stiff members that cannot control themselves and become criminals? I have to ask, is there a woman box too?

It appears to be warming up out of the single digits we had earlier. I think I can actually move now that I am slightly unfrozen. So, time to get something done. Going to lurk mode…later!

From this article, the guy isn’t great with the back pedaling excuse:

Pyles said it’s just the way he talks, even to those who are dearest to him.

“It’s the way I talk to my sons here,” he said, according to the News Leader. “As soon as it left my mouth, I knew it was going to be misinterpreted.”

“I have boys,” Pyles continued. “‘Listen boy, you can’t do that.’ That’s the way I talk to them. The fact that I think of Calvin no differently than I do anybody else, it came out, but I know the world looks at things differently.”

They were local heroes around Chicago before they went full-on arena. We used to go see them play for a crowd of 2,000 at the Hammond Civic Auditorium.

The source on this story is an ex-Lt. Col who was on O’Reilly last night to totally insist that “officials” within the Army had told him that the decision’s been made, the report has sat on a general’s desk since last October, and (of course) that the White House is forcing the Army to sit on the report rather than charge Bergdahl.

DeYoung hasn’t been in Styx for 15 years.

Talks of Reunion with DeYoung[edit]
In a July 7, 2011 interview with Rolling Stone music magazine Tommy Shaw stated that he “[doesn’t] think [a reunion with DeYoung] is realistic,” and that “what was true in 1983 was only more true in 1996”, in which his coming together with DeYoung had “a very negative effect on each other”.[32]

DeYoung, however, has repeatedly stated that he’s open to a reunion with the other members and that what he really wants is for all of them to “come together as a band.” DeYoung also refuted the claim that Shaw and Young wanted a harder-edged rock sound in contrast to his, saying Shaw’s “Renegade” “wasn’t a rock song when he brought it in. It was my idea to make it into a rock song.”

I just had a bizarre conversation (if you can call it that) with a deeply unpleasant person named Mikki Kendall (Michelle Goldberg at The Nation had a few obervations about her…not good) who promptly comlained I violated her boundaries and muted me for observing that maybe we can forgive Benedict Cumberbatch for his verbal miscue, and that by association we should not automatically assume malevolent intent from other people if they say something we don’t like.

Holy shit.

Wasn’t it Sully who spread the conspiracy theory that Trig was really Bristol’s son? Did he keep it up even after Bristol came out with her own pregnancy?

Yeah, with typical conspiracy monger, “I’m just asking questions” excuse. I despise Palin, but dragging her infant son into some ridiculous and easily disproved conspiracy was just despicable.

It’s bad in the UK as well, and has been since (at least) the 80s. Left-wing comics over there have been mocking use of “the coloureds” to describe Jamaican and other immigrant populations for ages.

Global Warming denialism makes strange bedfellows.

From Science magazine:

On 1 January, a reputed climate change denier took the reins of Brazil’s science ministry, causing some scientists to worry about the country’s environmental future. Aldo Rebelo, a hard-line communist whose party supported the October reelection of President Dilma Rousseff, has called climate change an “environmental scam” and dubbed the movement to curb greenhouse emissions “the bridgehead of imperialism.” As a member of Brazil’s Congress, Rebelo also worked on a 2012 revision of the country’s forest code that many experts believe will increase deforestation.

Can we convince Inhofe and his cronies that climate change mitigation is now an anti-communist imperative?

495 Blind Frog Belly White  Jan 28, 2015 10:59:14am

I think the funniest thing about the whole Palin meltdown is the way that early fans, who savagely attacked early Conservative critics, are turning against her, but talking about wasted potential, and how she changed after losing the election.

Where they ASLEEP in September and October of 2008? She gave a good speech at the Convention, and a passable debate performance, but beyond that it was patently obvious she had not the slightest clue about any policy issues and her sole benefit to the ticket was tapping into the chronic resentment of the Right. IOW, it was patently obvious who she was long before the election, and nothing that she’s done since should be at all surprising to anyone with a pulse - even a Conservative.

But I did like one thing I read in Charles Cooke’s takedown of her meltdown:

It is deeply unconservative, too. The Right will likely never agree on how best it should move forward, but we might at least unite against the belief that there exist superheroes who are able to save the country from itself; against the idea that any one person can be the official standard bearer of a whole ideological or demographic group; and against the presumption that conservatism will gain anything much at all from the promotion and advancement of its most erratic champions.

IMO, it’s deeply un-self aware for a Conservative to decry hero worship in a profoundly authoritarian movement that defies people like the Founding Fathers as More Than Mere Mortals, and a dead actor whose actual record they ignore.

When your argument is “If we give some people rights, then everybody’s gonna want rights!,” then you’re pretty much lost.

Also, the argument is math. The equation governing the number of these bilateral relationships is (n!/(n-1)!)/2. So a married couple has one bilateral testimonial and marital confidences privilege between two people, , one inheritance right, one “tenancy by the entirety,” but a 6 person marriage has 15 such bilateral privileges. So what happens when those overlapping rights and privileges compete or are in direct conflict with one another?

The existing set of laws don’t need to be rewritten in any meaningful way to accommodate same sex marriage, because the math stays the same, it’s simples and already hashed out in the courts. I don’t have a moral objection to polygamy, but it’s a practical legal nightmare, and certain privileges would definitely become much more prone to abuse, including the furtherance of large criminal conspiracies.

He was travelling with sinus congestion so it is hopefully related to that - the pain seems to have passed after about five minutes - but they aren’t taking chances. Which I approve of. But I am not there.

I was going to mention blood pressure in relation to the nausea. A serious drop in BP will do that, along with the dizzinessnearly passing out. May all tie in to the decongestants as well.
