No updates since he got moved into the overnight ward. I have a number for the nurse’s station but I am unsure what the etiquette is regarding calling for updates?

Last I heard, assuming all came back fine from the lumbar puncture, he was going to be good to go in the morning. His boss was going to try to get him a phone and get back over to the hospital; once he’s released, he has to go back to Heathrow to collect his bag and then over to the original destination.

Hopefully the meetings that he was going over for can be rescheduled because otherwise he is going to miss all of them.

St. Louis City Hall Meeting Reportedly Interrupted By Brawl

One little detail that often gets overlooked about the AFA. Classy guy…

Roorda, who was sitting in the audience, had just finished yelling to the public safety committee chairman Alderman Terry Kennedy, “How about some order here?”
His comment came after a police officer was trying to give his testimony on the proposed legislation of a civilian oversight board but was being interrupted by some attendees.
Kennedy responded Roorda, saying, “First of all, you do not tell me my function.”
After hearing this, Roorda rose from his seat and was trying to move through the crowd towards the front of the room. He first tried to push the young black woman out of his way, and then, according to reports of those close by, pushed and scratched her face.

re: #102 Mattand

Apparently there is a book out there, allegedly based on extensive research, arguing that the Shepard case was more complex than a simple hate crime. Some like it, some don’t. Don’t see how reporting about the book qualifies as trutherism.

In September 2013, The Book of Matt: Hidden Truths About the Murder of Matthew Shepard by gay writer Stephen Jimenez, the producer of the 2004 20/20 segment, was published. The book revived and expanded upon Jimenez’s claims that Shepard’s murder was at least partly drug-related, specifically to Shepard’s being a “major” methamphetamine dealer, and that, contrary to the previously generally accepted version of events, his sexual orientation was not a major motive for the crime.[68] According to Jimenez, Shepard and the killer who inflicted the injuries (McKinney) had been occasional sexual partners.[69][70]
Culture critic Alyssa Rosenberg said the book was poorly sourced “by not distinguishing which quotations are manufactured from recollections, which are paraphrases recounted by sources, and which were spoken directly to [Jimenez].”[68] “[I]n a common bit of right-wing positioning meant to blunt any criticism of his theories as politically correct, Jimenez sets himself up as a victim,” wrote Rosenberg.[68]
Some police officials interviewed after Jimenez’s book’s publication disputed certain claims made in the book while others praised it. O’Malley noted Shephard’s small build and said the idea that Shepard was “a methamphetamine kingpin is almost humorous. Someone that would buy into that certainly would believe almost anything they read.” Rob Debree, lead sheriff’s investigator at the time, said the book contains “factual errors and lies”, and deemed Jimenez’s claim that Shepard was a drug dealer “truly laughable”.[66] However Matthew Shepard’s former lover and long-term friend, Ted Henson, said the book is “nothing more than the truth”[41] and Cal Rerucha, who prosecuted the case, stated that Jimenez was one of the only people “that really looked through the files” of the case. He called the book “fair” saying Shepard’s friends “were on a mission” to make the crime out as a hate crime. Rerucha also disputed Debree’s claim that Jimenez lied by claiming that someone had shot through Rerucha’s window. He said that someone had indeed shot through his window.[66]

He also didn’t grow up in America when the Klan and biased juries did what ever the fuck they wanted and terrorized black ppl who registered to vote.

Sometimes his Tory attitudes really do become a major problem for him.

Allow me to introduce you to the most heinous woman in Congress (it was a hard fought battle), Virginia Foxx.

As the House of Representatives debates an expansion of hate crimes legislation, Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.) has taken the rhetoric to a new level, claiming that those who say Matthew Shepard was murdered in Wyoming for being gay are perpetrating a “hoax” on the American people...

“This — the bill was named for him, hate crimes bill was named for him, but it’s really a hoax that that continues to be used as an excuse for passing these bills,” said Foxx.

The Advocate editor also did not merely report on the existence of the book. Is he a truther?

I don’t know if I would say he is or is not. That article is certainly written from the premise that the book is true but I don’t come away with a strong sense that the author necessarily holds those convictions. Clearly this was something the Advocate felt they had to address and they may have chosen to have a pro/con style approach. Certainly Charles linked a different article above. I don’t know, I don’t typically read it.

I didn’t typically read Sullivan either, but the tone of his article certainly came across to me as unquestioning acceptance of the book’s claims. Not only that, but he provided a platform for the author to speak, using his clout to boost the author’s reach.

Your first comment was that he was merely reporting the existence of the book. I would agree, only mentioning it wouldn’t count as being a truther. Which is why I set out to actually see what he said.

You could not have known this would happen. It won’t do you or he any good to worry over something that cannot be changed. It’s always easy to assess how you would handle a situation AFTER you’ve experienced it, but time doesn’t work that way.

Back when I was engaged to my now wife and still living in Canada, she had to have serious emergency surgery. The liberal Nazi, like the gay Nazi, is a conscious act of propaganda.

It’s a declaration that the current-day liberals and gays are existential threats that should be stopped by any means necessary.

The people selling this line want to do cruel things that are unjust by current standards, so they’re presenting it as the only possible solution to an ultimate evil.

And when they get to do those cruel things, they will claim self-defense.

Screaming how they’re going to save us all from Nazis is the only thing that distracts from their stated agenda of limiting individual civil liberty, instituting a state religion, and their basic contempt for democracy.

Downside would be losing a bookshelf but a lot of the stuff on that one could probably be either moved out, given away, or tossed.

People on the street are talking about the fact that There’s a Muslim Living in the White House. A Muslim Communist. His dad was a Muslim Communist. At least, the guy we think was his dad. The evidence is stacking up and there just has to be a song about it. Recorded earlier this week at Ray Stevens’ studio and in editing at the moment. Stay tuned.

The teaser lyrics are pure genius:

Talk about Islam
Talk about jihad
There’s a guy in the White House
Who doesn’t believe in God!

He believes in Allah,
And the Holy Koran.
He says that he’s a Christian
but we know he’s a Muslim man!

224 Prof. Backpfeifengesicht, PhD  Jan 29, 2015 2:32:34am

Whether Hitler was on the right or on the left (or on neither side) obviously depends on the definitions one uses. If one insists on the strict use of the local US defs of the beginning of the 21st century, then Hitler was neither right- (small government, pure free market, …), nor left- (social liberalism, anti-racism, pro-LGBT, …) wing. That’s not what the words are limited to globally and historically.

Historically there is a correlation between being right-wing and nationalistic/racist. While some parts of Hitler’s economic policy can be said to be left-wing, his ideology was extremely right-wing, and it’s the ideology (and its fruits) that he is remembered for. Not building infrastructure or supporting some elements of a welfare state.

Indeed. And it’s hard to describe Hitler in one word, since he intentionally mixed left and right elements. So simply saying “Hitler was right-wing” doesn’t clear the muddied up waters either. Which is why it may be more useful to always compartmentalize the characterizations of Weltanschauung/ideology on one hand from the economic policies on the other hand (even while remembering that in the end everything is interconnected). The question is thus not “was Hitler right- or left-wing” but “was Hitler’s ideology right-or left-wing” (and so on). Those kinds of questions can be answered more easily with fewer words.

That is also a good example. The South wouldn’t necessarily become less socially conservative (ideology/worldview) if they loved the socialist economic policies. They would just turn these policies towards the “white interests” while trying to exclude blacks from the system. Sort of Huckabee on steroids.

238 Prof. Backpfeifengesicht, PhD  Jan 29, 2015 4:50:03am

Is the Communist Party of the Russian Federation left-wing or right-wing? The answer is not obvious anymore. The ideological primacy is also why free market, gun nut, small govt wingnuts love Putin, despite him being not all that free market (he ain’t a commie, but he’s a leftist compared to them), gun-grabbing statist. 243 Prof. Backpfeifengesicht, PhD  Jan 29, 2015 4:59:03am

If you think of it, “free market” and “guns” for a lots of those folks are just precautions against blacks. Atwater confirmed this:

You start out in 1954 by saying, “n*****, n*****, n*****.” By 1968 you can’t say “n*****” — that hurts you. Backfires. So you say stuff like forced busing, states’ rights and all that stuff. You’re getting so abstract now [that] you’re talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you’re talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is [that] blacks get hurt worse than whites. And subconsciously maybe that is part of it. I’m not saying that. But I’m saying that if it is getting that abstract, and that coded, that we are doing away with the racial problem one way or the other. You follow me — because obviously sitting around saying, “We want to cut this,” is much more abstract than even the busing thing, and a hell of a lot more abstract than “n*****, n*****.”

244 Prof. Backpfeifengesicht, PhD  Jan 29, 2015 5:01:39am

re: #243 Prof. Backpfeifengesicht, PhD

And when blacks began to get guns, suddenly gun control wasn’t such a great heresy any longer:

Ironically, the NRA used to support gun control — when the Black Panthers started packing.

So, yeah. This is secondary and not a part of the core ideology.

re: #271 Maggie’s Pa

Scratching posts consisting of sisal rope and glued onto a PVC pipe is very easy to make.

They have a few scratching posts/spots; generally sisal or cardboard. (Tuxedo Cat favors the latter. Chat Noir prefers the wingback chairs.)

I’m looking for something more interactive since I think what bores her is not being able to hunt/stalk/grab. She’ll self-actuate to go after a catnip mouse now and then, and also spar/chase with Chat Noir.* She rarely plays with ball toys, which Chat Noir enjoys knocking around the apartment.

If I am gone for an evening, or home and *not* playing/paying attention to her in the desired fashion, Tuxedo Cat starts cleaning items off the dining room table, bedroom dresser, TV room tables, and kitchen counters. Including items weighing up to a pound or so - which she dips her nose under the bottom of and sort of pushes/flips them.

Two favorite games for the cats are:
1. Me poking a stick out from under a cloth bag. Chat Noir will charge across the room and dive onto the bag to play this. But Tuxedo Cat also likes lurking by the bag to paw at the end of the stick when it comes poking out from under the bag. (Or I tap the stick on a shelf of the cat tree and she climbs up there to paw at it.)

2. Red Dot MUST DIE! Only played once or twice a week in a darkened apartment. That produces some amusing stalks.

That they both like to stalk and play the stick-and-bag game implies to me that some sort of interactive hunting toy would be what they want. I don’t think the apartment management would approve of me releasing small birds or mice, so I need to find a mechanical alternative. I don’t think a video is a good alternative necessarily due to not being sure I want the cats hanging around and pawing at the TV too much.

There are some mechanical “spinning stick under cloth” toys out there, but the reviews imply that there are some issues with parts breaking easily, etc. So I am a bit wary since if I bought one I’d have it being thumped by Chat Noir and probably chewed on by Tuxedo Cat.

* - Spar and chase with Chat Noir was initially primarily started and won by Tuxedo Cat. As Chat Noir has gotten a little older he is initiating the combats more often, and also winning them more frequently. (A win being defined as which cat is chasing the other cat when the melee breaks up. And right now Chat Noir outweighs Tuxedo Cat by roughly 1.5 pounds and has more muscle and reach as well. So spar and chase is a personality/morale thing in the generated results.)

Meanwhile, things in a STL council meeting got out of hand when none other than Jeff Roorda got into a mixup with people seeking accountability from law enforcement and the city.

The meeting held by the aldermanic public safety committee, designed to seek public comment, lasted more than an hour with little event as residents ticked off the pros and cons of having a civilian board to review police conduct and procedures.

But the crowd became unsettled when police officers began testifying in opposition to the bill. At times, Alderman Terry Kennedy, who chairs the committee, struggled to keep order. The noise in the room spiked as police officers attempted to testify.

At that point, Jeff Roorda, the business manager of the city’s police union, stood and called for order. Roorda was wearing a wristband in support of Darren Wilson, a former Ferguson police officer whose fatal shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown last summer sparked months of civic unrest.

After Roorda stood up, the crowd grew louder.

“Excuse me, first of all, you do not tell me my function,” responded Kennedy, who has championed the issue of civilian review for more than a decade.

Standing in the aldermanic hearing room packed with people shoulder-to-shoulder beneath a ceiling painted with allegorical images of Western democracy, Roorda shouted back at Kennedy.

Others began yelling, then pushing and shoving as officers struggled to maintain control. Some in the crowd scrambled to leave the packed room, which has only two exits.

The commotion lasted for about 15 minutes until order was restored.

As Charles and others posted last night, Roorda was wearing a Support Darren Wilson bracelet, and Roorda has championed policies that allow law enforcement to avoid oversight and accountability. Someone apparently called him a white supremacist during the course of last night’s scrum too, which isn’t undeserved. Roorda’s policies do directly harm minorities in the STL area. While Roorda claims that other protesters were responsible for starting the melee, protesters claim that Roorda instigated it by pushing his way to the front of the room.

The meeting was to establish a police review board.

It’s little wonder that Roorda would oppose such a thing. Had it been in existence when Roorda was a cop, he might have found himself hauled in front of it and fired for his actions.

Instead, he’s managed to weasel his way into politics as a champion of out-of-control police departments in the region.

Governor Cuomo is getting a wee bit nervous with the recent criminal charges dropped on Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver last week.

One source described Cuomo as “doubly enraged” by hard-driving Manhattan US Attorney Preet Bharara’s decision to bring the five criminal corruption charges against Silver just hours after the governor delivered his State of the State address — and then, less than 24 hours after that, to indict Albany’s “three men in a room” culture in which Cuomo is the lead player.

and

Cuomo, who has retained a private lawyer, has enlisted several former federal and state-level prosecutors with ties to Bharara’s office including Steve Cohen, his former chief-of-staff, in an effort to find out Bharara’s next move, the sources said.

Governor Cuomo in his heavy handed approach to governing, may find he has few friends, including the powerful labor unions.

Memo to Kissinger (and McCain for tweeting this): The US always faces a wide range of diverse challenges:

Challenges just from the time Kissinger was NSC or Sec. State:

1970 War of Attrition (between Egypt/Israel), Yom Kippur War, opening China, Vietnamization of war, ending Vietnam war, Cold War with Soviet Union, turmoil in Africa, interventions in Latin America (including Chile and Argentina), war between India and Pakistan, East Timor, etc.

I’d say that matches up pretty favorably towards the current situation in the world, which includes: Russia-Ukraine conflict, Islamic terrorism in South Asia, Pakistan unrest, Boko Haram, Al Shabaab, conflicts with Israel (Hamas, Hizbullah), etc.

In many respects, the challenges are less between state-actors and other state-actors, but between state-actors and non-state actors that are terror groups trying to assert dominion over lawless or failed/failing states (like Yemen, Somalia, Nigeria, Gaza, Syria, Lebanon, frontier provinces of Pakistan, etc.).

So Kissinger (and McCain) are basically saying that Obama has handled tougher problems than any other president since Truman and he hasn’t dragged us into a war or wrecked the economy while doing it?

OK.

I get the feeling McCain has someone in his entourage that carries a locked black briefcase cuffed to an arm with a big old red Staples™ “Easy” button inside.

When he gets an itch, he calls the guy over, has him open the case and then Johnny Warrior goes nuts for a few minutes pushing that button while singing bomb-bomb-bomb (fill in target country he is pissed at today)!

He has worn out 43 buttons, four brief cases and two carriers in the Time of Obama!

Really fascinating since they use real excerpts from diaries about people from a wide range of countries who were in a wide variety of positions during WWI. My only complaint is I wish they had some focus on the Slavic peoples in the Austrian-Hungarian empire.. One thing that has surprised me is how brutal that war was to civilians. We tend to see WWII as being the first war that really brought warfare to the civilian population but it happened in WWI too.

Absolutely. When you have elected senators and governors like Cruz and Bobby Jindal pandering to the fears of the easily fearful, a lot of bad shit will happen. Cruz knows damn well that Shariah Law isn’t a problem in our country- care to explain the many BBQ joints Ted or how microbreweries are doing better than ever or Jindal’s outright lies about Islamic No-go zones. Normally, it wouldn’t occur to me to question someone’s statement about being married. However, I’ve reached the conclusion that Upchuck is lying about being married, just as he lies about everything else.

He always refers to his “Asian” wife or his “hot Asian wife”; sounds like he is talking about an object rather than a person. Given his misogyny, that in itself isn’t surprising. But it always reminds me of his statements about being an “award winning journalist”; he speaks of his wife like a trophy, something that makes him somehow superior.

New York pastor convicted of molesting grandchildren after insisting God forgave his pedophilia ‘demons’

A Mew York pastor this week was convicted of molesting his grandchildren just as he had been accused of sexually abusing his own children years before.

Jurors in Orleans County on Monday found 71-year-old pastor Roy Harriger guilty of molesting two of his grandchildren about 12 years ago, WGRZ reported. Harriger had originally been charged with molesting three of his grandchildren.

Another 15 people in three states signed affidavits last year alleging that they had also been molested by Harriger as children. But most of those cases were ruled to be past the statute of limitations.

I don’t agree with chemical castration as a punishment, but I may make an exception for this animal.

Laughable considering that few outside of the gaming community actually know that something actually happened called Gamer-gate. Or that it will have a lasting effect beyond its very narrow online presence.

But wouldn’t you know that it’s interesting that he’s mentioning Gamer-gate at all? He’s trying to glom on to yet another current event and trying to inject himself into affairs, even though he’s got nothing to do with it at all.

My condolences!

Heh, I headed for the East Coast the late ’90s and never looked back. As a matter of fact, I’ve only been south of the Mason-Dixon line once since then. There are very few things I miss beyond the food and a few friends.

It’s kinda like a bad marriage, y’know? Especially after converting to Islam and starting to wear a headscarf. These days, reading about it is like when you look back at your ex and think, “WTF did I ever see in him/her?? Why in the hell didn’t I get out sooner? If only I’d known how much happier I’d be…”

Well, still not discharged, just waiting on the final test results though.

His experience from start to now has been so much different than the American one, and so much better than what we could expect here. And again, the price: if he is discharged as expected, we are talking $700 for the entire thing, and his employer should cover that.

I’m glad he’s being discharged even if it means no paid trip over to England for me. We’re still not sure when he’s going to come back home though. (He is …understandably leery of flying with sinus congestion again.)

The obvious choice is for you to fly over and escort him home on a luxury cruise of some sort.

They’re different worlds. Hell, they’re different planets.

I’m not saying there aren’t plenty of decent, kind-hearted people in Texas who are open-minded and don’t fear differences—because I know for a fact that there are—unfortunately, the general culture hasn’t caught up with them yet.

Likewise, NY/NJ isn’t free of narrow-minded bigots—I know for a fact that they exist also because I’ve run into them on occasion—but they seem to be much fewer and much less vocal, less open about it

This idiot says stuff that sounds like he just thumbs through books or websites and copies down phrases he thinks sound good so he can Tweet them later. Like that white supremacist shit from yesterday, those words weren’t even his.

He rarely seems to have an original thought, and the intelligence he boasts about seems to consist solely of some lame plan to keep looking for and repeating things deemed provocative to see what kind of reaction he can get.

The saddest part is that so many thousands of people are willing to follow someone like that in Twitter. I can’t imagine having this guy drop his turds in my timeline all day.

re: #591 CuriousLurker

Going to Alabama was a culture shock after leaving New York.

It did give me a peek into how things work in the south. One of the students in several of my classes was a proud member of the KKK. His daddy and granddaddy were proud members and he was following the tradition.

Since I had long hair (ah, the good old days when I had hair) he immediately saw me as a target. But I ended up tutoring him in math and he decided that I was okay as were some of the other students. But he could never generalize that “okay” to groups as a whole. Old prejudices die hard. And I’d be willing to bet that after HS he reverted back to hating everyone who wasn’t like him.

I still find it sad that some folks have to use the color of their skin or their “patriotism” to feel worthy or superior. Sad that they have so little else in their life to feel proud of.

To be fair, he’s parroting an argument made by the far-less-problematic Jonah Goldberg (Goldberg is less problematic because he doesn’t stalk, dox, or threaten people). I doubt that UpChuck’s ever read Liberal Fascism, though; Many of the words in it are too big for little Chucky.

For the record, let it be noted that the only reason Goldberg is less problematic than CCJ is the apparent lack to date of the above-cited criminal behaviors.
