NPR: The Mormon Church Wants a Free Pass for Bigotry

Here we go again - bigotry redefined as “religious freedom”
Religion • Views: 46,797

MP3 Audio

The Mormon church has apparently learned a lesson from the Catholics and Protestants who’ve been redefining “religious freedom” as a free pass for bigotry, because they announced this week that they’ll support LGBT anti-discrimination laws — with one catch. They want to be immune from criticism when they continue the same anti-LGBT policies they’ve always had.

NPR has an interview with Mormon leader Elder Dallin Oaks, with a ration of phony victimhood that has to be heard to be believed. When I listened to this earlier, I was yelling at the radio: Mormon LGBT Announcement Met With Cheers, Skepticism.

Since any law that would prevent criticism would be unconstitutional, I’m gonna say: Nope.

Sounds like the Mormon Church is trying out the Scientology playbook.

I swear to Dog, they have an investment in the first Mormon President.

Awful lot of moderating going on.

And yes, I saw that graphic that showed liberals are most biased against LDS, while conservs most biased against Muslims.

Well, I’m most biased against Scientology, but the Mormon Church does come in as a strong second.

That was in the Old America. In the United States of Jesusland criticizing the church will no longer be allowed.

They want the “religious freedom” to use their religion to get the government to stop gay marriages.

Sorry, can’t do that. I’m SO glad I left that church over 20 years ago.

Once you read Under the Banner of Heaven by Jon Krakauer.. if you are of the un-religious persuasion, you will never respect the religion part of LDS. Their community? Absolutely yes, but the religion is based on a huckster.

Oh and their huckster’s deep racism that they adhered to until not cool
what, the 80’s?

I know it’s very early in the game, but Romney has 6 or 7 pts over Bush in a survey I saw on MSNBC, at 41%.

Let’s hope we don’t someday see President Cruz or (Cthuhu forbid) Romney signing the Religious Liberty Act of 2018, with a revamped SCOTUS to rubber stamp the new theocracy.

It is not impossible.

Have you ever noticed that no one wants to enforce a “sincerely held religious belief” to help anyone or do anything remotely kind or compassionate?

Jimmy Carter is doing a pretty good job of it.

Ok once the head mucky muck signs off on the papers he will finally be able to leave the hospital. He has gotten the nasty headache from the lumbar puncture. With luck that will go away sooner rather than later.

The next question is when does he come home and that is still unresolved. But I got his hotel for the night sorted out so he will have a place to sleep and take a shower that does not have the arcade game machine going in his ear all night long.

I do not want to think about the texting + phone bill I am running up.

And he still catches hell for his presidency.

For all the religious fervor being thrown around by these so-called “christians”, they’d crucify Jesus Christ if he entertained the thought of running.

19 team_fukit  Jan 29, 2015 5:34:44pm

re: #15 stpaulbear

Carter’s not currently seeking additional legislation to support special religious rights, he’s just working in the already existing law which already does not prohibit religious exercise

We can infer from this that ChuckC assumes that his target audience is ignorant of how libel works. He’s probably right. The other possibility is that he is that ignorant himself though surely an actual lawyer would have clued him by now.

Given that all of this was probably caused by sinus congestion, he is actually likely to stay in the UK longer to give his some time to clear up.

This is the first time it’s ever happened. He was also seriously trying to develop a sinus infection right before leaving, though, had a prescription decongestant but may have forgotten to take another dose while on the plane. :/

Decongestants can be a two edged sword. If you start with clear sinuses and then they clog at altitude, the feeling can be not unlike an icepick into your skull.

I know a lot of people like the 12 hour nasal inhalers, they have the benefit of not wearing off in 4 hours and you getting hit with a decongestant bounce where now you’re worse off than if you had done nothing.

So glad that Mr Klys is doing better, and yes, your cell / text bill will probably be bigger than the hospital care bill.

Hugs to ya.

Plugged in my obsolete iPod.

I have a 128GB version that I will play until it wears out. I don’t consider it obsolete at all. Just another way for Apple to squeeze people into the smart phone/iPod touch system and streaming music, with all the lack of connectivity and monthly fees that entails.

re: #89 SteveMcGaziBolaGate

I always liked The Cars’ first album, especially the second side. (heh, figure that one out kids) WMMR and WYSP used to play Moving in Stereo and All Mixed Up as one.

That would be ‘You’re All I’ve Got Tonight’ into ‘Moving in Stereo.’ The synth comes right in on the end of ‘YAIGT.’

It was easier for DJs to just let the record roll than to cue another record.

They had a pretty good run.
Somebody upstairs mentioned Boston. I was lukewarm to them but one of the songs I liked back then was A Man I’ll Never Be. Decades went by and I had almost forgotten about it until I heard in at a Trader Joes store. For some reason, well, I know the reason, the lid I thought I had bolted down on everything in my head for 25 years came off right in the middle of the store. Yikes.

Funny thing about my Ipod is I have more Carpenters than Led Zepellin. I also have a lot of Jethro Tull. It’s kind of funny where I drew the line of what I wanted to put in my library and what stuff I thought I’d heard a thousand times too many.

Never understood how you could play a guitar left handed.

Most left handed players restring the guitar so that the strings are in the same order as they are for right handed players (Low E closest to your head). However, there are some exceptions. Doyle Bramhall II plays with Clapton a lot, and his guitar is strung for right handed players.

He’s a great guitarist and has a unique sound because of how he plays. I play guitar and love to watch other guitarists play; you always learn things. Saw Doyle with Clapton and got a headache watching him, because everything was backwards and upside down. Ouch. Didn’t seem to bother Clapton though.

I saw them on that tour at the Tower Theater in Philly. Chester Thompson played drums for most of the night - but Phil’s drum rig was set up as well. Chester on the left, Phil on the right.

When they did ‘Los Endos,’ both Phil and Chester played. It was mighty.

Supposed to be asleep an hour ago, but there’s music going on. The Carpenters. Goodbye to Love. Road Ode. Rainy Days and Mondays. Yeah, and Superstar.

Wrote a novel set in 1973 — there are refs to 140 songs, mostly just titles. Can’t publish till I try to get permissions for about 20 songs with major quotes, esp. Rocky Mountain High & Sweet Baby James. Includes Goodbye to Love, and Let Me Be the One.

This thread is giving me earworms. Have to get out the iPod for tomorrow’s commute…
