Wingnuts Convinced They’ve “Debunked” Charles Blow’s Story About His Son & Campus Cop

Wingnuts • Views: 35,604

On January 26th, New York Times columnist Charles Blow posted an op-ed entitled Library Visit, Then Held at Gunpoint, where he wrote about his son being detained at gunpoint by a Yale University police officer. Right wing bloggers are certain they have “debunked” this story because Blow did not mention that the cop in question is black.

That’s their bombshell reveal.

From TPM:

Several conservative sites this week declared they had “debunked” New York Times columnist Charles Blow’s story about his son, who was allegedly stopped recently at gunpoint by a Yale police officer.

What was the bombshell that Blow had supposedly kept secret? The officer was apparently black.

In an op-ed published Sunday, Blow had relayed a story from his son Tahj about his recent run-in with a campus police officer who allegedly raised his gun and told the student to turn around and get on the ground.

Blow wrote that he was “exceedingly happy” that he had spoken to his son previously about precautions young black men should take when confronted by a police officer.

“In these moments, what you’ve done matters less than how you look,” he wrote.

Yale University later issued a campus-wide email that, among other things, noted that the officer in question was black, according to The Root.

Conservative media was convinced the officer’s race blew the entire story wide open.

“RACE-HOAX DEBUNKED: COP WHO DETAINED CHARLES BLOW’S SON IS BLACK,” was the Drudge-like headline at Breitbart News.

I’ll stop there (though TPM has other examples), because Breitbart “News” and John Nolte are all you really need to know about this so-called debunking of a “race hoax.”

First, here is the obligatory screenshot, in case Nolte and/or someone at Breitbart “News” decides it would be the better part of valor to delete this post:

And here are the comments that followed:

Sure he was a “white black.”

===

Just another example of blind racisim - when you go straight to racism you can no longer see the facts.

===

In reality what black people fear most is other black people.

===

According to statistics, with good reason.

===

Charles Blow, racist.

===

But, but… we’re told that Blacks are incapable of being racist. Another Progressive meme shot down.

===

White folks fear blacks too….ALOT…..just look at knock knock and polar bear hunting!!

===

If POTUS Lincoln had only been able to follow thru with shipping all the freed slaves back to Africa…we would not have this clustermuck to deal with!! (This one had 69 up votes at the time of posting).

===

4 times more whites are killed by blacks than blacks are killed by whites. Yet no one seems to dare say anything about that.

===

Blacks are also six times more likely to kill a cop than any other racial group. Hence the reason why cops should be “focused” on blacks during any potential confrontation.

===

Both! Lib-tard and racist! Have you read his columns?

===

There have been 3 shootings by Obamzo’s sons in the last two weeks that I have heard about. (First “Obama’s son comment - do a shot everyone!)

===

as a white friend of mine who was mugged in D.C. by 4 black youths said….”if I knew it was going to be this bad I would have picked the cotton myself.”

===

HAd Lincoln not gotten his noggin shot off…..and had time to ship the freed slaves back to Africa, the country would not have a 1/2 black POS POTUS, a black racist AG, race baiting scum and millions living off the largesse of sons and daughters of slaves owners!! if only!!

===

Well, I’m a second generation American and refuse to be responsible for any of this crap. We are not. I don’t use the term “African-American” because I know more about Africa and actually have worked with Africans from all over the continent. You’re right. I wonder what would have happened if Lincoln had lived.

===

It is “As Good As It Gets” race bait-er syndrome for Journalists.

“How do you do you describe race bait-ers so well?”

“I think of a man, and I take away reason and accountability.”*

*With apologies to Jack Nicholson.

===

Justifiable to fear other blacks……then they project it on to white people to hide the shame they should feel at their own race.

And on and on and on it goes, in typical Breitbart fashion.

Meanwhile, on Anderson Cooper’s show, Charles Blow correctly says the officer being black doesn’t change the fact that something very troubling happened.

Conservatives expend a lot of effort projecting their racism onto better people.

Blow is right. The office’s race doesn’t matter. Yet another pathetic effort to grasp at straws by conservatives.

What they really mean by debunking is, “It happened. It should happen because reasons relating to our inability to recognize anyone not our colour as human.”

“Because the Officer is Black, it didn’t happen / shows there is no problem”….

Is this some variation of the Chewbacca defense that I’m not familiar with? Better Call Saul.

This came up after the deaths of Eric Garner and Akai Gurley in NYC. Black NYPD officers admitted to being racially profiled by their fellow officers when off-duty, and some were involved in racial profiling of other ppl themselves.

It’s an institutional group-think by law enforcement that a certain subset of the population deserves further scrutiny based on nothing more than skin color. We see that with the statistics in Missouri, which found that whites were stopped far less than blacks, even though whites had a higher rate of carrying contraband. Ferguson was hardly an outlier in those statistics.

The problem isn’t solely the skin color of the arresting officers, but the disproportionate impact on minorities.

That’s the problem, and Charles Blow’s son was stopped at gunpoint by a cop for no reason other than being black (and somehow fitting the description of a burglary suspect that occurred nearby). No charges were filed against his son. He was accosted for being the dreaded walking from the library while black (and at night).

8 ObserverArt  Jan 30, 2015 12:44:17pm

Whoa, wait a gol durn minute!

Aren’t the conservative media always going on about how liberals make everything about race?

So, who made this about race?

That’s right The RightWingNutJob media.

They must have forgot all about this past summer/fall/early winter when it was all about police overuse of force…and it didn’t matter about the color of the cops as to the color of who was on the receiving end of the force.

Now, that was the race issue. And Blow’s article and his son’s situation is about how ANY police office jumps to the conclusion of African American kid…African American suspect, they all look the same.

What a pack of hungry dogs. Problem is, if they weren’t tossed food by their equally stupid readers/followers they’d freaking starve.

9 Backwoods_Sleuth  Jan 30, 2015 12:45:12pm

There was also some breathless revelations that Blow didn’t know his own son’s major at the university, because Blow said his son was majoring in one thing and “evidence” was found that it was a different major.

Both majors are all sciency stuff, so I can see the confusion of the wingnuts.

When wingnuts quote the Neimoller (sp?) poem, they tend to leave out the first two stanzas, which identify ‘socialists’ and ‘unionists’ as victims of fascism. Because those parts are very confusing for them. The poor dears.

32 Prof. Backpfeifengesicht, PhD  Jan 30, 2015 1:16:09pm

Interesting:

Stein reports that having asked Niemöller why he ever supported the Nazi Party, Niemöller replied:
I find myself wondering about that too. I wonder about it as much as I regret it. Still, it is true that Hitler betrayed me. I had an audience with him, as a representative of the Protestant Church, shortly before he became Chancellor, in 1932. Hitler promised me on his word of honor, to protect the Church, and not to issue any anti-Church laws. He also agreed not to allow pogroms against the Jews, assuring me as follows: “There will be restrictions against the Jews, but there will be no ghettos, no pogroms, in Germany.”
I really believed, given the widespread anti-Semitism in Germany, at that time—that Jews should avoid aspiring to Government positions or seats in the Reichstag. There were many Jews, especially among the Zionists, who took a similar stand. Hitler’s assurance satisfied me at the time. On the other hand, I hated the growing atheistic movement, which was fostered and promoted by the Social Democrats and the Communists. Their hostility toward the Church made me pin my hopes on Hitler for a while.
I am paying for that mistake now; and not me alone, but thousands of other persons like me.

The Kochs, posing as “libertarians”, implying they’re about your civil liberties and increasing “your wealth”—hardly likely when you’re working for increasingly poorer wages—are poseurs whose only interest is themselves and increasing their own wealth by installing someone who will work to eliminate social programs and increase their influence in changing govt policies to suit the corporatists in the US.

Real enough story, but I-20 is nowhere near Tennessee. The original puts it at Tuscaloosa, near Birmingham. There’s a ‘Bama joke in there somewhere.

You are correct Sir. I saw that it was from the Chattanooga news station, and for some reason thought that it was 20 that came out of Chat, not 24. (and I should really know better, having made that drive a number of times).

In any case, I love the part in the story where it said that the trucker showed officers the tooth in his pocket as evidence.

111 Justanotherhuman  Jan 30, 2015 2:36:15pm

112 Targetpractice  Jan 30, 2015 2:37:46pm

Chuck also rode his bike uphill in the snow, both ways, to deliver all 300 of those newspapers.

113 Backwoods_Sleuth  Jan 30, 2015 2:37:51pm

Being in the newspaper business, I’m more than a little familiar with how print newspaper delivery works.
If you are lucky, the newspaper delivers the papers to you in the wee hours of the morning…in stacked bundles; otherwise (and most likely) you go to the paper’s printing plant to pick up the bundles at the loading dock.
You (the delivery boy) have to break open those bundles, roll them, put a rubber band on them or slip them into a plastic sleeve if the weather is bad. You have to do all of that before you even start loading up your bicycle (or car), and loading will take a while.
300 houses? Don’t even try to do the math on that as to how long actual delivering will take.

what a freaking liar he is.

Terrorist attacks are nearly a daily occurrence. Here’s the list for January. It stops on the 28th, so it obviously hasn’t been updated to include today’s bombing. Aside from the attacks in Paris and the big ones—like the Baga massacre in Nigeria (which was largely overshadowed by the Paris attacks)—how many were you even remotely aware of? Be honest.

FFS, do people not understand that the same people doing that shit “over there” to “those people” will eventually be doing it here, to us, either in person or by proxy? Sorry, but sometimes it gets on my last nerve, even more so with the asshole “counter-jihadists” and other assorted bigots who claim to be freedom loving patriots filled with humanitarian “concern”. Puhleez.

These fucking grifters are getting rich feeding people’s fear and spreading hatred & discord, as we saw yesterday in Texas. They don’t give a shit about anything but how much they can make at their next speaking engagement/TV appearance or how many books they can sell. *spit*

In 1933 Hitler said, “If I can separate the youth of Germany from their parents I will conquer this nation.” He started a movement called “The Brown Shirts” in which 100,000 youth stood in Berlin with their right hand raised and screaming. “Hitler, we are yours!” Imagine our youth pledging that kind of allegiance to King Jesus!

I suspect that if his story has any truth to it (always a risky bet), he was delivering the Quincy Patriot-Ledger, which is an afternoon daily and has no Sunday edition. It’s thinner than the Boston dailies, too.

But I also think he’s pretty much full of shit. Or at least he was, until he dumped it on the floor.

Shows how long it’s been since I lived in Boston. Would the Quincy Patriot-Ledger even have 300 subscribers in Milton? (My niece lived in Quincy proper for about 10 years and didn’t subscribe.)

Ahhh. Der Dutchman, up in Plain City. Been a long time since I’ve been there. That is way out of the way for me.

I think one of the things that may have made me unaware of grits is no one around me growing up served them. Maybe no one liked them and that rubbed off to the point I may have looked right past them on some menus.

He went to Milton Academy. Doesn’t mean he lived in Milton. But yes, the Patriot Ledger had/has decent penetration there. (Ewww. I just used “penetration” in a post about UpChuck. Ewww.)

If he lived a few towns over, he might also have been delivering the Dedham Daily Transcript, an even thinner afternoon rag.

Or he’s just making the whole thing up, which is probably the likeliest case.

I think the main problem people have with grits is indeed how they are prepared.
Grits should never be sticky or lumpy (as often happens in restaurants where grits are made in big vats and sit on the warming stove too long).
Good grits should be smooth and silky…and never watery thin like slave gruel.

Sacrilege!

This reminds me. I was in a hurry shopping a few weeks back and mistakenly grabbed a box of Quaker 1 minute oats. I have never used them…It doesn’t take a long time to cook the Old Fashioned type.

So, I cooked them according to the instructions, took one bite and said…yuk. I gave them another chance…took two more spoonfuls and that was it. They were awful. They didn’t even have the same flavor to me.

Oh well. I use ground up oats in meatballs. I’ll try putting them in my next meatball creation. I hope they don’t mess even those up.

Yeah, I always use oats to stretch hamburger (or ground whatever) and the 1-minute oats are fine for that. Maybe better.

For eating, though—instant oats are horrible but I can see how they might be considered “more convenient”. 1-minute oats, though? If you’re fixing them in a saucepan, boiling the water, stirring them, all that crap—one minute, five minutes, wotsa diff?

Then there’s “pinhead” oats—that’s the whole groat before it’s steel-cut. So there’s pre-cooked “Instant” oats—just add water. Parboiled, rolled, and parboiled-some-more “1-Minute” oats—cook one minute. Parboiled, rolled “5-minute” oats—cook five minutes. “Steel-cut” oats—cook 40 minutes. “Pinhead” oats—cook overnight!

Alton Brown showed how to do it in a slow-cooker on Good Eats, and I always wanted to try it. Maybe I will, now that this has come up.

If it was supposed to be Seattle in a movie, 10 to 1 it was really Vancouver.

I watched Jackie Chan’s Rumble in the Bronx in the theater; it wasn’t fine art, but it was a pretty good action flick back in the day, especially with him doing his own stunts. However, I chuckled seeing Vancouver fill in for New York, with mountains in the background in some exterior shots.

I am currently reading The Final Reflection, the only Star Trek novel I’ve ever liked. Probably because none of the characters are in it. Although McCoy’s grandfather mentions changing his grandson’s diapers at one point and Spock at age 7 plays chess with the main character Krenn sutai Rustaszh, captain of the Imperial Klingon D5 Cruiser, Fencer.

At one point Krenn is at breakfast in Atlanta with McCoy’s grandfather. Grandad says, “I don’t know much about Klingon physiology but I would recommend that you not eat those.”

“Why? What are they?” asks Krenn.

“Those, sir, are grits.”

Krenn tries a mouthful and decides they aren’t as bad as Romulan emergency rations, barely.

===
From my food files: (Slow cooker oatmeal)
Small slow cooker.
1/2 c steel cut oats
1/2 cup dried apples or apricots or cherry or etc
1/2 cup raisins
1/2 cup half & half
2 cups water

Cook over night. Best. Oatmeal. Ever.
===
Only note is to dice the fruit up. A whole dried cherry that reconstitutes is sort of icky.

The comments these tools made can only be made by those who ignore the nation’s history. We have a long history of some blacks being as prejudiced toward other blacks as some whites. I remember when I was young and attended an all black elementary school, the lighter skinned girls and boys were thought to be smarter and better. Not that they were, but it was just something that many black people thought at the time and some still do. The reason they thought/think this way is because since the time of slavery, lighter skinned blacks tended to be treated differently than darker skinned blacks by their owners. They had a better chance of becoming house servants while the other blacks worked in the fields and at other more difficult jobs.

It would also help these Breitbartians if they knew that blacks in America have always had to deal with racism, prejudice, and discrimination coming from other black persons. Call it “the enemy within.” It partly explains why black republicans like Cain, West, Elder, Carson, Steele, and others seem to forget they’re black and what it means to be a black man in America, and why they refuse to speak out against the racism, bigotry, and prejudice that surrounds them in the GOP/TP. They’re trying to please those whom they view as their “betters.” They attack President Obama because he refuses to search for his self worth in the opinions of others. He knows who he is, what he can/cannot do, and he doesn’t need others to validate the existence of these things. He’s nobody’s “dog” but his own, and it pisses them off to no end. Unsurprisingly, it’s also the reason many in the GOP/TP dislike him. Unlike the black republicans I mentioned previously, he refuses to allow them to define him and tell him where his “place” is/should be. It’s also why they were so pissed when he said he’d won two elections. They were saying in their minds, “How dare that ____ have the nerve to taunt his superiors!”
