Trixie Whitley is the heir to the amazing voice of the gone but not forgotten Chris Whitley, and in this Tiny Desk Concert with Daniel Lanois she digs deep. This is the real deal, folks.

At the NPR Music offices, Trixie Whitley and Daniel Lanois brought a variety of instrumental backing, including an electronic bed for the single “I Believe in You,” only to ditch many of the accoutrements on the fly. The result is a gripping and revealing performance.

Set List:
“Surely”
“Silverado”
“I Believe In You”
“I’d Rather Go Blind”

There was a wing eating bacchanal in South Philadelphia this morning. Some guy won 10K and a Harley by eating 444 chicken wings in about 25 minutes. The defending champ came up 2 short. She had her heart set on the Harley. EDIT, she lost by 4

What a disgusting “sport”.

How does that make the people who make wings money? Who watches that and then says “let’s go get some wings”?

That has to rack up some real stress on your body, eating that much.

A report this am stated that some drs are refusing to treat children whose parents refuse vaccination.

Not sure if that’s the way to go, but someone needs to jerk these anti-vaxxers up by the collar. I think it borders on child abuse/neglect.

Vaxxing touched on the subject of our lecture in nursing school this morning. Even if a nurse disagrees with a patient’s decision about health care, he or she is honor bound to help that client anyway. Can’t refuse care, can’t browbeat them, but you would have to support them and provide teaching for them to safely pursue this course.

I heard that story this morning too. The reason given was that doctors don’t wand unvaxinated kids sitting around in their waiting rooms. I can see being so pissed off at the parents that I would tell the whole family to go away.

MrBWS got home about an hour ago and is feeling bad because he’s still sick (even sicker than he was last week) and I made a doctor appointment for him on Monday, so he’ll miss out on any potential storm work.
I told him that missing out on the money is no biggie compared to possibly dying on the job.

re: #15 Justanotherhuman

The place to start is eliminating the religious and other exemptions that are not medically indicated (as in someone who has allergies to eggs or immune compromised). Oddly, Mississippi is one of two states (WV the other) that doesn’t allow a religious or philosophical exemptions, and they’ve got the highest vaccination rates in the country. California is down on the list because of the higher percentage of people who take advantage of religious and other objections clauses.

Eliminate those exemptions. If MS can uphold the law mandating vaccines on grounds that public health comes first, then these states can and should follow.

As it is, these outbreaks get a foothold where vaccination rates are lower, and while some nitwits want to claim that the outbreaks are the results of foreigners, Latin America has comparable (and in some cases better) vaccination rates with the US (source here). A few have better rates, in part because of universal health insurance and free vaccinations.

39 lawhawk  Jan 30, 2015 6:24:01pm

re: #34 Charles Johnson

It’s not just about this person, but I wonder about their claims that a vaccine may have caused harm to someone they know. If it’s as they say, did they file a claim with the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program? Because that’s where they would report the side effects, and gain compensation if it was indeed a vaccine that caused it.

But since we’re talking about almost dying - 145,000 die of measles worldwide every year. That number has come down due to vaccinations. These anti-vaxxers want to reverse it. They will add to the body count.

And even if no one dies, it can still mean hospitalization and added costs that are entirely preventable. Not just for the person getting vaccinated, but for anyone who can’t get vaccinated like infants and immune compromised, or the elderly.

These fuckers are messing with public health over junk science and pseudoscience. They ignore the consequences of not vaccinating, and it is taking major outbreaks to refocus attention on the anti-vaxxers and their harms.

I just realized that this is pay-day weekend at the post, and I’ve got shopping to do tomorrow. The connection between those two statements, the stores are going to be jammed bigtime. I’m going to have to go and get it done early. I’ve also got to set up and do some photograpy, I’ve got appx 12,000 dollars (retail) of stuff from the dive shop that I’m going to try to sell off for them. It’s all new stuff, but most of it they got at a song from a shop that went out of business. I get 15% of sales after expenses, I know that some of it will go pretty easy, some will go low, and some probably won’t sell at all, some old / cheap or kids stuff.

I’ve got to sit down and plan out the menu for next week, so I can get in and out as quick as possible tomorrow.

We have it too easy, no discipline or imposed responsibilities. It’s too easy to dodge jury duty. There is no mandatory government/public service. We should be required to turn in a ballot, even if blank. Vaccinations should be declined for medically confirmed reasons only like zero immune cells after chemo. Children heck, AFAIK adults should be required to get certain shots.

I would agree, just because what was described can also be a symptom of vitreous detachment or retinal detachment. Vitreous detachment is common as folks get older and isn’t an issue unless it pulls the retina with it.

But if it goes away when the headache eases, then it’s probably just the migraine. Note: I’m not a medical professional nor do I play one on TV.

But I do have vitreous detachment in both eyes.

I’ve had that fight with some at Daily Kos. They (not everyone there, just some) can’t seem to make the leap to how to pay for the planes or boats to get there and to the US or where to put the detainees. It’s just an abstract place that has a door you can put a chain on.

They punted on the Bush tax cuts so as not to piss off those imaginary voters who wouldn’t vote for them if they took action. That worked out well for them in 2010, just as it always has and always will. Wonder why they’ve never picked up on that.

Way back in 2008, a major Hizbullah terrorist, Imad Mughniyah was killed in a car bombing in Beirut. At the time, all eyes fell on Israel, which denied involvement. Now, the WaPo is reporting that the CIA was deeply involved, and that the Mossad had its finger on the trigger. The report claims that the CIA helped design the bomb, testing it at Langley to minimize collateral casualties.

Mughniyah was implicated in several high profile bombings, including the US embassy in Beirut, and the Israeli embassy bombing in Argentina, so his targeting makes sense, and it took a presidential finding to authorize the attack.

Yup, and let’s not forget that the precipitating act was the 1983 bombing of the US Embassy in Beirut that killed 63 (17 Americans) and the Marine barracks bombings that killed 241 Americans. The embassy bombing was the worst attack on a US diplomatic facility to that date (exceeded only by the al Qaeda attacks on the African embassies in 1998). It took decades before the US responded. And the response was targeted on the person responsible for authorizing that attack.

But it took 25 years. 25 years.

So, The World Alpine Ski Championships start on Monday. Parking started getting scarce today, it’s predicted to be non-existent after 9:00 a.m. during the two-week event.

I was late to work today, first time in the four winters I’ve worked at this particular ski shop, because I couldn’t find a damn place to park.

It’s a source of consternation for many locals. And what’s the payoff? Any Lizards planning on watching some ski racing in America? I’m not even sure what TV channel it’ll be broadcast on. I’ll keep y’all up to date, it is a really exciting thing! My local ski hills haven’t hosted The Worlds in 16 years.

I’m going to watch the Women’s Downhill in person a week from today. It’s a brand new course, the gals haven’t raced on it yet. I hope no one gets hurt, but I’m predicting some crashes. Those downhill courses at Beaver Creek are ferocious!

The race courses proper and a couple of adjacent trails close, as does the lift over the courses during racing (the lift will open at 2:30 everyday to get people out of there). Other than that, the mountain stays open. Really a drop in the bucket terrain-wise. I read that less than 5% of Vail Mountain will be closed during the races.

They built a 3000-seat grandstand at the finish area. The VIP pavilion at the finish area is bigger than the on-mountain restaurants. There are about seven very large temporary structures at the finish area, tune shops, media, etc.

It’s pretty crazy, actually.

And -15 sitting still sucks no matter how you slice it. You can be dressed to the gills and have heated socks and gloves but you’re sill gonna fuckin’ freeze in that kind of weather.

MSNBC boss Phil Griffin has continued to tout Morning Joe as one of his successes, but the reality is that MSNBC viewers have no interest in the program. The collapse of Morning Joe highlights one of the biggest inconsistencies in MSNBC’s strategy. Griffin claims that he wants to attract younger viewers to the network, but he appears to be completely in love with a program that does poorly with the same viewers age 25-54 that he is courting.

In order to win the gop nod, Romney had to disavow his signature achievements in MA, like Romneycare. He also had to move to the right on gay rights, immigration, abortion, etc, going so far as to use absurd phrases like “I’m severely conservative” to reassure those repubs who thought he was too moderate.

The gop is more conservative than a decade ago, when Bush last held office. He may be acceptable to the base on abortion and some other issues, but he’s gonna have to flip flop on immigration OR pull off a really hard sell to the huge nativist/tp wing of his party. He’s almost certainly the least conservative overall of the candidates, so he’ll be taking shots from the right from all the other contenders.

160 The Very Reverend Battleaxe of Knowledge  Jan 31, 2015 12:36:13am

I’m honestly extremely surprised at Romney’s leaving the race. There’s ~900 megabucks of Koch money to be spent on this circus, and they’re going to get the nominee they want, which is a nice, controllable plutocratic candidate.

They are not going to allow some loose cannon from the teabagger freakshow that is going to be the rest of the primary race. I would have thought either Mitt or JEB! would have been satisfactory. They figure they can buy the general election for whatever empty suit they decide to finance, and with all the voter-suppression efforts their operatives have put in place, they may be right.

My only question is whether the lid of the lunatic-fringe pressure-cooker can be clamped down tight enough this time. They’ve already decided Bush the Lesser was a commie and Pappy Bush was a one-term president who lost to a Clinton and brought on all the misery and woe we’ve suffered since. /

If the Kochs try to force another Bush on them, I honestly don’t know what’ll happen. They’ve never been forced to live under a blah president for 8 years before. The insanity has attained a pitch I would have considered impossible in the public arena—or most nuthouses.

Will there be a revolt and a brokered convention? Maybe a third-party teabagger candidate? In my fantasies the latter happens and the GOP and TP candidates savage each other so thoroughly that they can barely split 40% of the vote between them. Probably won’t happen, but wouldn’t it be glorious?

Mary Cheney wants to know why it isn’t “socially acceptable” for a white person to “put on blackface and act out offensive stereotypes of African-Americans” if drags queens are allowed to imitate female stereotypes?

Oh Christ. Listen lady, it seems to me as a straight dude that the impetus for drag queens in the gay community started as a sub/conscious acknowledgment that at the root of homophobia lies misogyny. The community fostered it as a form of expression to in part take the sting out of being attacked for a perceived failure to express traditional masculinity.

They weren’t so much making fun of women as they were trying to buy society a fucking clue and maybe have a momentary laugh at their own second class status and subjugation. This is one of many, many reasons why the comparison to blackface is totally goddamned ridiculous. And really, if I can figure that out then how can you as a lesbian, who’s had your own rights and family equality denied along with gay men throughout most of your adult life because of the same perceived failure to conform to gender roles, not simply intuit that shit?

So, media outlets are trying to frame the vaccination need as a “debate”. Wrong.

It’s not a debate. It’s not a question. Anti-vaxxers who are unsupported by facts, logic, or science, are doing real damage to public health.

The only debate should be how quick states should adopt the WV and MS position on mandatory vaccinations except for those with an established medical need (eg immune compromised, allergic). If MS can get to 99% vaccination, so too can every other state.

This is out of hand, and with reports that someone who may have had measles self-reported that they went through New York Penn Station (which sees 100,000+ people a day, on Amtrak up to Albany and then to Western NY), the fact is that we might see a cluster of cases here soon too.

Even Larry Wilmore fell back on this “both sides need representation” bullshit to a degree on the Nightly Show. His monologue specifically called out the idea that non-experts are given equal footing as trained immunologists (Jenny McCarthy, in particular) as idiotic.

So naturally, for the roundtable discussion, he included a woman who runs a “freedom to choose to get a shot” network as part of the discussion. The best argument the woman could get forward was “Big Pharma make a bijillion bucks off of vaccines”. Pretty sure her intent was to imply it was a conspiracy without being full-on Alex Jones.

It didn’t help that another panelist cited his distrust of vaccines was due to a fear of becoming part of another Tuskegee experiment. Which is not to downplay the Tuskegee incident; but at this point, if something like that was going on with flu and measles vax, we’d probably know about it by now.

I guess Wilmore’s rationalization was that if we’re going to criticize people for not getting vaccinated, they need to be able to stand up for themselves.

If it were me? Fuck them, they don’t get a voice.

Being anti-vaccine (or pro-choice vaccine, or less vaccines, or whatever bullshit title you want to dress it up in) is the same as declaring water is not wet. You’re ignorant of science and a menace to public health.

What’s next, getting a couple of flat-earthers to debate that the Earth is actually flat?

Anti-vaxxers are in the same category.

Now, there were several incidents where vaccines did cause actual measurable harm - inadequately attenuated vaccines, or vaccines that didn’t provide enough of an immune response, but those incidents are well studied and understood.

The whole notion of choice ignores that public health trumps. These people are putting everyone’s lives in danger. Family, infants, elderly, everyone. And it’s a far greater threat than some nonsensical raving about ebola going airborne (Chuckles here’s looking at you babycakes!).

Heck, if “third world” countries can get 99% vaccination, why can’t the US.

This nitwit says that it’s open borders, except the story he links says it was someone possibly from the Philippines, who would have flown in for vacation. In other words, a legal visitor - not an illegal alien, and certainly not the result of “open borders” policies.

Of course, they all ignore that an outbreak would not occur but for low vaccination rates that allow the disease to spread like wildfire among those who are unvaccinated or whose immunity has waned.

Disney measles outbreak likely came from legal visitor or a US resident who came back from overseas and carried the disease.

An outbreak of measles that started in California’s Disneyland probably came from overseas, carried either by a foreign tourist or by an American coming back with the virus, a top federal health official said Thursday.

The virus has now infected 94 people in eight states, and 67 can be clearly linked to Disneyland, California health officials report. Because measles is so contagious, more cases can be expected.

“We don’t know exactly how this outbreak started but we do think it was likely a person infected with measles overseas,” Dr. Anne Schuchat of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told reporters.

“We assume that someone got infected with measles overseas, visited Disneyland park, and spread the disease to others.”

The strain is similar to versions circulating in Indonesia, Qatar, Azerbaijan and Dubai.

You Can Sell Your Poop For $13,000 a Year

Money definitely doesn’t grow on trees, but it might be growing in your bowels. If you’re really healthy, you can sell your poop to sick people who need it for as much as $13,000 a year.

People who are infected with a bacteria called C. difficile need healthy fecal matter in their gut in order to survive — otherwise they need to be on constant antibiotic treatment. Some people with Crohn’s disease also benefit from fecal transplants. So a company called Open Biome has been facilitating fecal transplants to patients in need, and paying healthy poopers a hefty sum for their services.

MSNBC viewers have spoken loudly as Morning Joe’s ratings continue to slide. The conservative talker is now the lowest rated morning show on cable news…

MSNBC boss Phil Griffin has continued to tout Morning Joe as one of his successes, but the reality is that MSNBC viewers have no interest in the program. The collapse of Morning Joe highlights one of the biggest inconsistencies in MSNBC’s strategy. Griffin claims that he wants to attract younger viewers to the network, but he appears to be completely in love with a program that does poorly with the same viewers age 25-54 that he is courting.

politicususa.com

So here’s a great idea, let’s put the asshole on in prime time—that’ll work!!

I just checked this story out. Nice to know many people have the same feeling for Morning Joke as I do. If the story has the ratings info correct, Morning Joke may not be long for cable TV.

I also notice many people are starting to get the feeling I’ve had for a few years now. That would be that traditional fact-based news programs without opinion are dead and gone.

That hurts our society. This is why we get anti-vaxers and other ignorance to grow and take root. There really is no entity that has the ability to make people smarten up and provide the damn truth. No one anyone will listen to because they can always find someone willing to tell them what they want to hear.

First business that gets back into fact based straight news wins. Just don’t know if that will ever be on TV, or if it will just come from the ‘net.

The first and toughest obstacle will be lasting long enough to build up an audience that will respect you and know you are playing it straight. The crap we have now has so much doubt, it will be hard to actually speak the truth.

Thanks FOX. Your war on main stream media blew up everything. In my opinion anyway. Unfair, unbalanced is where we find ourselves now.

http://www.webmd.com/vaccines/adult-mmr-vaccine-guidelines?page=2

The CDC says adults at greater risk of measles or mumps should get two doses of MMR vaccine, the second one 4 weeks after the first. This includes adults who:

Have been exposed to measles or mumps or live in an area where an outbreak has happened
Are students in colleges or trade schools
Travel internationally
Work in health care
For measles, the CDC advises a second dose for adults who:

Were previously given a vaccine made with “killed” measles (instead of the live-type of vaccine used today)
Were given an MMR vaccine between 1963 and 1967, but there’s no record of what type.

Lawhawk, are you still here?

You (and everyone else) may find the article below interesting as it concludes that Boehner’s invitation to Netanyahu is unconstitutional, likewise Congress would be in violation of the Constitution by hosting the speech against POTUS’ wishes. I hadn’t heard this before. An example given was:

Is Netanyahu’s Address to Congress Unconstitutional? (UPDATED)

And as an aside, if the current facts do not seem to make the constitutional point sharply, consider the situation had a Democratic Congress invited Fidel Castro, Daniel Ortega or Mikhail Gorbachev to address Congress over President Reagan’s objection.

The author Michael D. Ramsey appears to be a conservative or libertarian (he’s a member of the Federalist Society), and at least two other law professors seem to agree with him—Peter Spiro, the the beginning of the article, and David Bernstein at the end.

Cardinal Raymond Burke: ‘Feminized’ church and altar girls caused priest shortage

In an unusual move, Francis effectively demoted Burke in November, shifting him from his job in the Roman Curia to a largely ceremonial post as patron of the Order of Malta, a global Catholic charitable organization based in Rome.

Vatican observers suspected the switch would actually give Burke more freedom to speak his mind, and in this latest interview the cardinal doubled down on themes he has often struck: that liberalizing changes in both society and the church, especially “radical feminism,” have gravely undermined the Catholic faith since the 1970s.

No problem, but this is a man of the cloth that will have nothing to do with female priests, same-sex marriages, birth control, etc., etc.

WTF???

Cardinal Burke is okay, see? I know that because I found a picture of the GI Joe he played with when he was a youngster:

I’m still shaking my head over those massively long vestment trains.

Same here. I was just looking at them again. I mean seriously—you need someone to follow you around and carry your train and you don’t see a problem with that? He’s the very embodiment of much of what people despise about the Catholic Church.

Gross, gross, gross… Hey, Cardinal? How about you stop spending $$$ on such obscenely luxurious vestments and start feeding some hungry children or something? You’re supposed to be a believer, right? WTF are you going to say to God when asked about that crap, huh?

Yup, and let’s not forget that the precipitating act was the 1983 bombing of the US Embassy in Beirut that killed 63 (17 Americans) and the Marine barracks bombings that killed 241 Americans. The embassy bombing was the worst attack on a US diplomatic facility to that date (exceeded only by the al Qaeda attacks on the African embassies in 1998). It took decades before the US responded. And the response was targeted on the person responsible for authorizing that attack.

But it took 25 years. 25 years.

Better late than never.

Murdoch Newspaper Criticized for Sexist Obit of Author & Neurophysicist Colleen McCullough

(shameless Pages promo)

This reminds of an interview Janis Joplin submitted to when she returned to her hometown —the successful world-touring rock star.

They asked her if she had ever been invited to the Prom.

I would have said that, but I wasn’t raised Catholic, so I thought it wasn’t a good thing to jump into!
