Saturday Jam: Keith Jarrett Trio, ‘Solar and Extension’

Music • Views: 28,095

YouTube

I used to have the VHS tape of this concert back during another lifetime, and was really glad to find this performance of the classic Miles Davis tune “Solar” by the greatest jazz trio that ever played together; it’s sheer telepathy. The audio track is a bit on the quiet side so you may want to turn it up.

Recorded live in Tokyo, July 25, 1993 at Open Theater East.
Keith Jarrett piano
Gary Peacock double-bass
Jack DeJohnette drums

Solar (Miles Davis) + Extension (Keith Jarrett)

As if I needed more distractions. I just downloaded and installed Duolingo on my Kindle. Doing exercises to teach myself a language is pretty neat. I may not become fluent, but it beats matching pieces of candy. Heh.

I’d be interested to know what you think of it. I was using it for Spanish (guess why), and after a while, say 20-odd lessons, it starts getting hard to find “right” answers, because there’s usually more than one, when you’re talking about translation, and it’s a dumb computer doing the scoring. You have to know just what words it wants.

Also from downstairs re Antarctica: I’ll do my best on pictures, but I’m about nine months behind on sorting the ones I already have.

Also, if you’re seriously planning to do this, start looking now, pick what cruise you want (I’m doing Celebrity) and start noting how the prices change and when. We paid at least a couple thousand less than later bookers might because we booked two years in advance. Other cruise lines might show other patterns (e.g. prices go down for a while after the first listing). Or there’s the last minute variation — if you can get to Buenos Aires in two weeks, you can probably get your cabin for at least $2000 less than I paid. Of course, your husband may not be up for the 14-hour flight just yet.

Right now, the anti-vaxxers cross ideological lines, but it will become a predominantly right wing movement before too long.

Obviously not all stupid people are right-wing. But, if I need a dolt in a hurry, I know where to look.

I always felt that cruises were awesome vacations. One of the things I liked the most was wave action, but it isn’t so good anymore with these supertanker sized cruise ships. I always wanted something out of Victory at Sea. The pools are great when the ship rocks, with the water sloshing back and forth.

We’ve decided (well actually V decided) that on our 40th anniversary we’re heading down to New Orleans for a week. I’d like to drive down and stop at a few places along the way, maybe even meet up with a few lizards.

Any suggestions on what we should visit on the way down from Sask?

I find it hard to believe the anti-vaxxers will tack right. I think most people associate anti-vaxing with Hollywood, and there’s no way the right will ever want to have anything to do with them.

I always remember Gus’ Circle of Derp and how there was a meeting of both extremes at the bottom.

But yeah, these days the RWNJs are out in force and when they get set on a cause they can and do often take total control.

The Badlands are well worth stopping by. Don’t miss Wall Drug! You can also tour (if you go on a weekday and manage to snag a spot) one of the missile silo control centers at the National Minutemen Historic Site in that same area, which I HIGHLY recommend if you have any interest in the history of that sort of thing at all.

Seriously, the Grand Canyon would set you up for doing a lot of the parks in Utah on the way back (or there). But. That is probably turning into easily a 6 week road trip. If not more. Just as a warning.

We drove from Detroit to Huntsville for Thanksgiving 2013. We stopped in Cincinnati for dinner, then drove on to Louisville where we spent the night in Brown’s Hotel, then on to Alabama the next morning.

When Google Maps tells you it’s “9 hours” that means 9 hours on the road, driving. It doesn’t count any stops for fuel, bathroom, lunch, sightseeing, whatever.

63 klys (maker of Silmarils)  Jan 31, 2015 5:47:59pm

I did, with my sister, from the Bay Area to Vegas via Tahoe and Death Valley, and then instead of going from Vegas to the Grand Canyon like planned we had to divert because I40 was closed with snow. So I still owe her a Grand Canyon trip but we hit Zion that day, and then down into Arizona and over past 4 Corners into Cortez, where we stopped for the night. Skipped Mesa Verde the next morning mostly because I was really tired and headed to CO Springs, where we camped for an evening at my aunt’s before heading off to Lincoln, NE in the most god-forsaken boring day of driving ever where I pretended the steering wheel was a mustache. Then up to Minneapolis to pick up the husband and couch-surfed at my great-aunt’s in Eau Claire before showing up to pick up our trailer in Necedah, WI at noon the next day.

I’m pretty sure we left on a Saturday so that was 6 days of driving (with minimal but not non-existent sightseeing).

If I could have cut out NE and IA I would have been completely ok with it.

If you are hitting enough parks on the trip, it is worth investigating the year-long pass to all parks, which is about $80, gets a whole car in, and is generally one of the best bargains out there.

Seniors supposedly get a discounted rate for a lifetime pass but I don’t know if that applies for foreign tourists.

If you do go to the Grand Canyon, give yourselves time. It’s called “Grand” for a reason. You can literally spend days exploring. What’s also cool about it is for around $20/person you can get a full week pass to the park.

The GC is my place to go, so I may demand more than just a couple of days.
If V gets a week in NO, then I should get equal time.

As a military brat, Wife crossed the Atlantic 4 times in the ’50s. Each time the assigned ship got smaller—Queen Mary, USS Patch, USS Buckner, USS Darby.

Damn, my family and I came back from Yokosuka, Japan on the USNS General William O. Darby in 1954. That was an interesting crossing. We encountered a typhoon and were partially successful in trying to run around it. You know you’re having fun when the screws come out of the water every time the ship pitches.

Mine was 10 bucks for lifetime at a zillion federal parks and forests. It’s for 60 and up. Rent a geezer.

My uncle went to Vietnam on a ship. One night in a storm, the bow went down while my uncle was still going up. He lost six teeth and by the time he got out of the hospital he spent the rest of his tour driving a truck instead of carrying a rifle. He still says it’s the second best thing that happened to him.

Yes, on Windows 7 running either Firefox or Chrome. They will almost always become visible if I reload the whole page, which is a pain because I lose my place. And even if I open the comment in a separate window, it will occasionally show up without the tweet, or the tweet will be briefly visible and then disappear.

Curiosity question on any road trip is ‘what counts as interesting’ to a particular traveler. Mountain scenery — start at Glacier, continue though Yellowstone and on down the Front Range before turning east at Colorado or New Mexico. Total turista — Mt Rushmore. Dinosaurs — dig sites and cool funky little museums in Wyoming and Colorado and the Badlands of South Dakota; Dinosaur Ridge west of Denver; the Sternberg Museum in Hays KS; the Texas Memorial Museum on the UT campus in Austin. Old West - Dodge City, KS; the Alamo in San Antonio. Civil War battlefields up and down the Mississippi. Mark Twain memorabilia in Hannibal, MO. Elvis and Graceland. Craft breweries in Colorado and elsewhere. Little offbeat wineries along the way, in unexpected places.

What’s worth a stop? What’s the tolerance for crowds and tourist traps? What’s boring (besides all those unavoidable miles of prairie).

As I said earlier, there’s some beautiful tourist spots and Florida Beaches in Destin an hour west of Mobile.

Biloxi, happens to be my neck of the woods. I’d recommend visiting downtown Ocean Springs, it’s a lovely little All American community with some great restaurants, then you can stop by the bay bridge before you drive over it. It offers some great views of eastern Biloxi.

You can see the Google map of the area I’m talking about here:

google.com

The east point on the map is the heart of downtown “OS” as it’s called (Ocean Springs), the west point is the aforementioned visitors center.

Over the bridge will lead you in to Biloxi and Casino Row, beyond that on Highway 90 is the Biloxi lighthouse and also right there is the Visitors Center which has not only info on attractions but also plenty about the history of the area.

Also in that same area, if you’re into that kind of thing is the beautiful old Biloxi cemetery.

If the the weather is nice you can hit the ferry to Ship Island. It’s a great little place. Takes maybe 5 mins to walk from the dock to the far side of the island. You’ll find a great beach with actual waves out there (since it’s beyond the barrier islands).

There’s also several art museums, a Maritime History Museum and, if you’re into historical things, the Beauvoir and Jefferson Davis Presidential Library.

I can also refer to some great restaurants around here too.

It’s always worth knowing which hockey game is likely to result in a few brawls.

Most people don’t appreciate how difficult it is to punch somebody while you’re on skates ;)

So did you see any good brawls?

Nice dust-up during the first period of the Oilers/Flames game. Still a period to go.

I have actually been there. We took a trip to visit my son in IA (from Dallas), and part of our vacation was to head to Mount Rushmore. On our way, we drove to the Corn Palace. It’s impressive once you realize what work it took to decorate it.

When I am bored, I use them to tell me which game to watch from previous seasons. >.>

“We could save a lot of lives if we secured our borders but we aren’t really interested so more will die.” - Chuck

In the 1912 flu epidemic, people thought they could keep the infection out if they closed their town. Except they didn’t completely close it: They let the mailman deliver mail. Because they had no clue how diseases spread, it got into town anyway.

If measles were actually spreading from the south, which it isn’t, closing borders to immigrants wouldn’t keep it out.
