Creationist Neurosurgeon Ben Carson: Measles Outbreak Caused by “Undocumented People”

The xenophobia excuse
Wingnuts • Views: 29,187

You may have heard that loony right wing creationist neurosurgeon Dr. Ben Carson came out yesterday with a pretty strong statement in support of vaccinations.

Well, that was yesterday, and yesterday’s gone. Today Carson has gotten his xenophobic marching orders, and he’s blaming the measles outbreak on immigrants.

“These are things that we had under control. We have to account for the fact that we now have people coming into the country sometimes undocumented people who perhaps have diseases that we had under control,” he said. “So now we need to be doubly vigilant about making sure that we immunize them to keep them from getting diseases that once were under control.”

Dr. Carson is apparently unaware that Central American countries and Mexico typically have higher rates of vaccination than the United States — because in these countries, they know very well the horrible toll diseases like measles can exact, and they take it seriously. (Unlike the US, where a lot of people have seemingly forgotten this natural fact.)

Oh, and also? Carson defended Rand Paul’s statement that parents should be allowed to choose whether or not to have their children vaccinated.

“Well, I listened to what he said and I think perhaps it’s not exactly being portrayed the way he meant it. You know, if you were to talk to him, I’m sure he would tell you that vaccines are very, very important and have made a tremendous difference in our society,” Carson said. “He’s simply saying we don’t want to be forced. We want to have some choice. And I think there are ways to do this in a reasonable and rational way that involves educating the populace. There were a lot of myths going around about vaccinations causing autism.”

The GOP is very rapidly becoming the party that enshrines anti-vaccine doctrine as a matter of personal choice … or “illegals” … or “religious freedom” …

The fact remains, there would be NO MEASLES OUTBREAK if Americans would just freakin vaccinate!!!

2 Backwoods_Sleuth  Feb 3, 2015 6:03:27pm

And, as someone who has NO immunity to measles, I would sincerely appreciate every freaking American get their damned selves vaccinated.

When I saw Carson’s statement earlier tonight, I thought that was too good to be true. Waiting a bit, turns out that I was sadly right. He was going to go with the illegal alien angle, which is the one proffered by the AAPS, right wing loons, and xenophobes for decades (because it could never be the fact that but for mandatory vaccinations with no exemptions there wouldn’t have been an outbreak of this magnitude in the first place).

Never mind that Mexico isn’t currently experiencing an outbreak other than cases brought back into Mexico from Disney. The likelihood is that someone visiting the US from overseas carried the disease and the disease spread like wildfire among those who had not been vaccinated in the US.

Let me repeat:

But for the failure to require mandatory vaccination with only exemptions for medical need, this outbreak would not have spread to the size it has.

Thinking back to my childhood, I now realize I had a pretty significant problem with immunity - which really wasn’t spelled out to me by my parents or any others. I pretty much was a magnet for all of the childhood diseases, even though I had the full gamut of immunizations.

Starting at age 2 - tonsillitus requiring surgical removal, and apparently was severe enough that I had to learn how to talk again.

Age 5 - 12 regular bouts with bronchitis, with several instances of onset of bronchial pneumonia to boot.
Age 7 - Mumps (no MMR yet, so bad luck for me)
Age 9 - Measles (non-Rubella)
Age 10-13 - allergic reactions to just about every substance on the planet - fortunately most of these abated with the onset of puberty
Age 20(!) - Chicken pox
All of this left me moderately asthmatic - not a major deal unless I get hit with ear/nose/throat infections, then it turns into about a month of pure hell.

I shudder to think of what I would have had to deal with if I got hit with one of the major diseases like TB. I think I can safely say that my quality (and probably length) of life was significantly improved via vaccination.

I’ve been on trains that have hit trespassers (suicides) and those that have hit cars.

Trains are nothing to mess around with. You put your life in your own hands when you cross the tracks when the gates are down or walk on the tracks.

The details are still coming in, but it seems that this car went around the gates, hit an oncoming train that was going full speed, and then burst into flames.

re: #61 Belafon

The defendant insists that his liberty is invaded when the State subjects him to fine or imprisonment for neglecting or refusing to submit to vaccination; that a compulsory vaccination law is unreasonable, arbitrary and oppressive, and, therefore, hostile to the inherent right of every freeman to care for his own body and health in such way as to him seems best, and that the execution of such a law against one who objects to vaccination, no matter for what reason, is nothing short of an assault upon his person. But the liberty secured by the Constitution of the United States to every person within its jurisdiction does not import an absolute right in each person to be, at all times and in all circumstances, wholly freed from restraint. There are manifold restraints to which every person is necessarily subject for the common good. On any other basis, organized society could not exist with safety to its members. Society based on the rule that each one is a law unto himself would soon be confronted with disorder and anarchy. Real liberty for all could not exist under the operation of a principle which recognizes the right of each individual person to use his own, whether in respect of his person or his property, regardless of the injury that may be done to others.

The Founders used to inoculate (not vaccinate) people for smallpox. Any idea what that means, wingnuts? I thought not. It means to infect a person with pus from a smallpox sufferer in order to give them a somewhat milder case themselves.

The advantage of this was that you could do it at a time of your choosing when resources weren’t overloaded during an epidemic and there were people available to take care of you. As a bonus, it had only about a 10% chance of killing you, instead of the usual 30% or more.

No, that’s vaccination, from “vaccinia”—cowpox. “inoculation” is to use pus from a human smallpox victim.

I think the term vaccination comes from the Latin for cow because of the cowpox improvement on the original inoculation. In the early 18th century they were using smallpox.

We’ve always had the doubters:

With Mather’s support, Boylston immediately started a variolation program and continued to inoculate many volunteers, despite many adversaries in both the public and the medical community in Boston. As the disease spread, so did the controversy around Mather and Boylston (12). At the height of the epidemic, a bomb was thrown into Mather’s house.

They would later go on to show that the rate of death among those inoculated was much lower than those that weren’t.
