Twitter CEO Dick Costolo: ‘We Suck at Dealing With Abuse’

Tonight we’re getting news of a fascinating statement from Twitter’s CEO: ‘We Suck at Dealing With Abuse’.

Twitter CEO Dick Costolo is taking personal responsibility for his platform’s chronic problems with harassment and abuse, telling employees that he is embarrassed for the company’s failures and would soon be taking stronger action to eliminate trolls. He said problems with trolls are driving away the company’s users. “We suck at dealing with abuse and trolls on the platform and we’ve sucked at it for years,” Costolo wrote in an internal memo obtained by The Verge. “It’s no secret and the rest of the world talks about it every day. We lose core user after core user by not addressing simple trolling issues that they face every day.”

“IT’S NOBODY’S FAULT BUT MINE.”

Costolo’s comments came in response to a question on an internal forum about a recent story by Lindy West, a frequent target of harassment on Twitter. Among other things, West’s tormentors created a Twitter account for her then recently-deceased father and made cruel comments about her on the service; West recently shared her story on This American Life and the Guardian. On Twitter’s forums, an employee asked whether anything could be done:

In response, Costolo made a frank acknowledgement of Twitter’s slowness to adopt tools to combat trolls.

I hope this isn’t just a PR statement, and that it leads to a real commitment to putting a stop to the outrageous harassment Twitter has been enabling and tolerating for years. The worst of it is directed at women; they’re the targets of unbelievably misogynistic stalking on Twitter. But it’s not just women; people who follow me on Twitter are no doubt aware that there is a sizable group of right wing lunatics who have been stalking and harassing me and my followers ever since I opened my account years ago.

It’s time for Twitter to step up and deal with this huge problem.

My interpretation is that weltallica thinks that if Twitter institutes a policy of reducing threats, abuse, stalking, etc., that the users to be removed will be the reasonable people who disagree with them.

S/he gave the examples of anti-vaxxers and Birthers, who will immediately block anyone who disagrees with them, because in their warped view, that constitutes harrassment. They will be the ones doing the complaining, and those who oppose them will be the ones removed.

Everybody else seems to be interpreting his/her post differently, however, so I’ll shut up now.

I despise CSI and its variants. I recently had one of my students - she was a big fan of CSI and its offspring - to sit down and watch David Fincher’s 2007 film Zodiac for a more realistic view of how police investigation actually works, and how tedious and frustrating it can be, especially in high-profile cases like the Zodiac Killer; how many investigative dead-ends there can be, focusing on the wrong suspect, an investigator’s instinct leading them astray or going down blind alleys.

And how sometimes, even with the best of efforts, the real-life villains remain at large.

She’s come to the conclusion that CSI is typical “Hollywood happy-ending” claptrap.

Seems to me if it were PR drivel it would be more of a “mistakes were made” and maybe they’d find an intern to blame for it. The fact that the CEO says in no uncertain terms “IT’S NOBODY’S FAULT BUT MINE” and makes some concrete pledges of how things are going to change…well, first it makes me wonder how he got to be a C-level if he’s in the habit of admitting error and taking responsibility, but that aside it sounds like someone who at least has good intentions. He’s still facing a formidable technical problem. Just the scale of trying to police how many hundreds of millions of users?

We’ll see.

This was like when the US Secretary of Defense, faced with a major drop in female enlistments, declared a “zero-tolerance” policy towards sexual harassment and instituted a show trial to show that its intentions were genuine.

They picked out a troublemaker, a Master Sergeant (the highest-ranking enlisted grade), who was later acquitted on charges of sexual harassment but charged with tampering with evidence.

In other words, he didn’t do it, but he lied about not having done it. He received an honorable discharge and got to keep his pension and benefits.

That’s what they called “cracking down”.

The first couple seasons of the original show were kinda interesting and kept the absurd to a manageable level. After that? Ugh, awful.

In one of episode of CSI: Miami, the bad guy built some kind of drone, which he mounted on the underside of his car, to shot a bullet at someone using the person’s cellphone GPS signal.

Seriously.

The bad thing is the negative affect the shows have had on the trial process (Google “CSI effect”), where jurors expect absurd levels of forensic science before they’re willing to convict a defendant, particularly for less serious crimes where the government isn’t going to pay for a couple dozen DNA tests, etc.

Unfortunately, CSI isn’t alone promoting the absolute absurd, Bones and NCIS are right up there with it, the Law & Order series use some of the same stupid plot gimmicks.

About the only shows I’ve ever really enjoyed have been Southland, where the detectives use this thing called detective work, you know, going around interviewing people, to catch criminals; and The Closer, where the main characters are more likely to lie about having forensic evidence to get a confession (the show is often morally dubious if you haven’t seen it) than to actually have it.

I like Bones because of the characters and the romantic involvements. I know the science isn’t that great (although supposedly based on a real forensic anthropologist). It’s sorta popcorn or cotton candy of TV for me, since I don’t watch reality TV.

Edit: Will have to check out Southland. Also, anyone remember Hill Street Blues. That was a pretty good cop show. I swear sometimes TV thinks the only people in the world are medical personnel, lawyers, and cops.

I stopped watching my favorite show, NCIS: Los Angeles (my favorite because LINDA HUNT IS SUCH A BADASS), when I realized that EVERY FUCKING EPISODE contains a shootout either in some public venue full of civilians, or in a private residence where the walls and furniture are shredded with automatic weapons fire.

Every. Single. Episode. And sometimes more than once (shootout in some guy’s house, then another shootout at the mall or on the beach)

One thing I like about Criminal Minds is that they *usually* will try to talk the murderer down from killing anyone. They aren’t always successful, but there are enough times when they do that it’s worthwhile.

I like the Bones show because I have read all the Kathy Reichs novels, but Tempe on the TV show is a completely different character than Tempe in the books.

Rizzoli & Isles is even worse. In the books, Rizzoli is the plain, fat one and Isles is the knockout brunette, also Isles boyfriend is a Catholic priest.

Then there was a period I didn’t see it at all (I don’t remember why) and it went from nothing having really happened between her and Easter-Island-Head, and then the next thing I know, they’re living together and she’s pregnant. What the….

So now I’m trying to catch upon all the old reruns to find out how that happened. Mostly I watch it to perv on Michaela Conlin, though.

Bones in the books is very different. There is no such place as the “Jeffersonian” (that was made up for the TV show). Bones is older, divorced with an adult daughter who is in the military. Her boyfriend is a Canadian cop. Not even a Mountie, just a Montreal cop, but an English speaker.

What’s funny is if you’ll recall, one of the things HSB was celebrated for was its frenetic editing and jerky, handheld camera work, quite a shocking change from the standard locked-down directing of previous cop shows.

But if you go back and watch some of the shows now, they seem very stagey and almost plodding in their pacing. Time, and MTV, marches on.

The article is the standard U3 vs U6 employment rate comparison stuff. And it talks about a “good job” being one with 30+ hours/week and a regular paycheck. And then goes from there to castigate the White House about talking about 5.6% unemployment when there are lots of people not looking for work, underemployed, etc. etc.

Gee, maybe look or mention how Walmart and a lot of other companies use part-time workers, low wages, etc. to depress things. Nope. OBAMA’S FAULT.

* - I have not logged onto LinkedIn’s site since before they did their IPO. I did some initial set-up there 4+ years ago. Then I did a password reset and they screwed it up. A second password reset still did not fix the issue. An email to their site support did not earn a reply. So I decided that if a site couldn’t handle their access security in a timely manner then I wanted nothing more to do with it. That they did an IPO and essentially sold all their collected information for profit did nothing much to make me want to renew ties either.

So I read this a.m. that the Repubs have actually drawn up something that almost looks like a healthcare reform bill, to replace Obamacare should Congress or the SCOTUS gut it.

Only five years too late. But it would end the individual and employer mandates. It would end most regulations of private insurance although it would create an open enrollment period for the uninsured who could only then qualify for insurance regardless of pre-existing conditions. But their bill would not include the ACA’s ban against insurance companies restricting policies to only those without pre-existing conditions. The GOP bill would end Medicaid expansion.

So who or what does the GOP bill actually cover?

Their bill would also begin the process of subjecting a person’s healthcare insurance benefits to income taxation. The NEW TAXES would kick in at certain thresholds. If a Democrat had recommended this it would be labeled as THE BIGGEST MOST TYRANNY TAX INCREASES EVER FOR ALL TIME!!!!!!11

I like CSI for what it is, but I’m smart enough to know it’s mostly glammed up entertainment with only a minor resemblance to the real thing.

One my personal favourite gripes about these shows is how they always manage to get a DNA test result or fingerprint result in like, 15 minutes. In the real world these processes take can take DAYS.

Also, the idea of the Crime Sceene Investigators actually QUESTIONING SUSPECTS is pretty far out there too. A real life CSI would probably NEVER do that, that’s a job for you know, detectives.

I despise CSI and its variants. I recently had one of my students - she was a big fan of CSI and its offspring - to sit down and watch David Fincher’s 2007 film Zodiac for a more realistic view of how police investigation actually works, and how tedious and frustrating it can be, especially in high-profile cases like the Zodiac Killer; how many investigative dead-ends there can be, focusing on the wrong suspect, an investigator’s instinct leading them astray or going down blind alleys.

And how sometimes, even with the best of efforts, the real-life villains remain at large.

She’s come to the conclusion that CSI is typical “Hollywood happy-ending” claptrap.

The problem is the ramification on our judicial system and society as a whole. People expect that this is true and people sitting on juries expect this type of tied-neatly-with-a-bow, technological evidence is the only thing that matters - while most are unable to understand the science behind the actual evidence. It’s all cool and glamorous until which time you are expected to understand what expert testimony is all about…because you are basing your decision on it…yet you are unable to do so. Which leads to eyewitness evidence (which is notoriously wrong) ruling over any other evidence. It is easier to understand people than science, no matter if those people are wrong.

I think that this often results in not evidence carrying the day in trials but inner prejudices for who is believed or not, and who is convicted or not.

Meanwhile, Jon Stewart gets caught playing games with his vaccination coverage, implying that a woman didn’t get her kids vaccinated for measles, when the uncut footage shows that the woman did.

The clip shows Skytt saying her kids are vaccinated “for the most part,” which Stewart says means, “No.” Then Stewart jumps forward to Skytt saying that she lives in Marin, where people are educated and liberal and so if they don’t get their kids vaccinated, they probably have a good reason. Bam! In comes Stewart with a joke about Californians practicing a “mindful stupidity” and steaming their vaginas and getting espresso enemas.

But if you watch the full CNN clip you’ll notice that Stewart’s producers jumped over a somewhat important part — the part where the CNN journalist says Skytt did in fact vaccinate her kids for measles.

The Skytt interview came from a CNN story about the parents of a kid who has had chemotherapy for leukemia. Those parents want their son’s school to ban kids who have not been immunized.

Here’s the thing. Vaccinations should be easy. Everyone gets all of them unless you have a medical exemption. No opting out. No deferred vaccinations unless you have a credible medical exemption/need.

No religious exemptions.
No philosophical exemptions.

Get vaccinated. Period. Why is this so damned hard to figure out. Oh wait, mystical magical beliefs that vaccines will cause harms, when we know that not getting vaccinated will cause far greater harms - not just for the individual but the community at large. Vaccinations are one of the biggest leaps in public health - eliminating costly hospitalizations and medical care and lost wages and depressed economic activity resulting from care for those who became ill from wholly preventable diseases.

Get vaccinated.

But watch Stewart’s fast-and-loose cut of the video be used by the anti-vaxxers as proof that the fix is in or that the pro-vaccination folks are lying about the benefits of vaccinations.

The only thing I can guess is that it’s a moral system where affiliation trumps a general standard of conduct. Not context or nuance, only social position.

There isn’t “moral high ground” in the sense of being kinder, or being merciful. Their “high ground” is defined by sanctity, and sanctity is defined by powerful people claiming to hear things from God. It’s not even about the Bible or Jesus, it’s about they guys who interpret the Bible and Jesus.

That’s broad, but it actually explains the baked-in hypocrisy of the Religious Right and the wingnuts quite well.

I am so disgusted with Twitter’s dealings with trolls and moderation that I will not work for them. The only reason I have looked at their jobs page was to make this comment. There are a number of positions I could do, and one that is asking for a skill set that closely matches mine. I wouldn’t call them lazy. They have a lot of constraints on what they write, and the big ones are time and tastes. Viewers would probably tune out of a show where the loose ends can’t be tied up quickly (especially when they’ve been conditioned by watching decades worth of neat and tidy cases), and the writers have to fit the story into what is usuall a 1 hour time slot.

Was in the grocery store the other night and a woman was talking VERY loudly about her last visit to the OB/GYN. I tried to ignore her, but she was talking so loudly that you could hear her conversation from several aisles away. I finally walked up to her and stood there listening. She stopped talking, gave me an extremely dirty look and said “This is a private conversation!”

I replied “No it isn’t, everyone in the store can hear you”.

She hung up the phone. Being cranky does occasionally have advantages ;)

One of the memes floating around among the fever swamps on the right is that Obama hasn’t done anything against ISIL/ISIS after the Paris attacks, while the Jordanian king is in uniform and is personally directing hellfire at ISIL.

So while that is actually Jordanian King in fatigues, President Obama hasn’t done nothing but release Gitmo terrorists back into the wild (which was done to get back Bowe Bergdahl and address his actions pursuant to the UCMJ). In fact, the US just took out an al Qaeda thug who celebrated the attack on video. And the US continues attacking ISIL and al Qaeda targets across the Middle East, Levant, North Africa, and South Asia.

King Abdullah vs. ISIS? Not so fast.
Twitter is, well, all atwitter as photos of Jordan’s King Abdullah preparing for combat go viral on social media. But the actual context behind the photos tell a very different story.

Today there are at least two photos circulating online of King Abdullah in combat fatigues, both claiming to one extent or another that he’s piloted a combat mission to attack ISIS himself. But looks can be deceiving.

Hi gang. I’ve been out of the loop for a while because I had my left kidney removed Tuesday. This was a radical nephrectomy, done because an MRI in December spotted a tumor in the middle of the kidney. It did indeed turn out to be cancer. The doc is sure this has gotten all of it since these tumors are relatively slow growing and we managed to find it early,

They used the laporascopic procedure, with a series of small incisions and a scary looking robot, but I was able to leave the hospital the next day.
The problem is that they inject CO2 into the body cavity during the procedure, it cannot all be removed, and this causes the worst case of gas bloating I have ever imagined. They tell me it will go away if I walk as much as possible and use stool softeners. In the meantime it is extremely painful, especially when I try to get up or down.

This is the SECOND time I have had a potentially fatal cancer detected at a very early stage during an MRI that had been conducted for a completely different reason.

People who don’t have insurance cannot get these preventive procedures done, since they are quite expensive (though they can save many lives and many millions in treatment down the road). Hospitals will usually treat cancer for indigent patients, but it is often too late by the time it is found.

My disgust with the “let em die” crowd could not be any higher. I have private insurance, but God bless Barack Obama and everyone associated with him for making this available to others, and doing so against ferocious opposition from the pitiless and short sighted elements who are, themselves, such a cancer upon this society..

I can empathize on the pain. I had my appendix removed the same way. All I can say is it will get better; I think I was done with it in about a week.
