Right Wing Media Already Misleading About Obama’s Prayer Breakfast Comments

Right wing media defend using Christianity to justify Jim Crow & Spanish Inquisition
Religion • Views: 53,943

Right wing media are already taking President Obama’s comments at this morning’s prayer breakfast out of context in order to play into the hateful attack that our President is a terrorist sympathizer who hates Christians.

Hot Air accused the President of comparing Christianity to ISIS:

Drudge went with the single out of context quote in his headline:

And of course, this is not what the President said at all. Below is the context (taken directly from the link that Drudge uses and then ignores):

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama on Thursday condemned those who seek to use religion as a rationale for carrying out violence around the world, declaring that “no god condones terror.”

“We are summoned to push back against those who would distort our religion for their nihilistic ends,” Obama said during remarks at the National Prayer Breakfast. He singled out the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria, calling the militants a “death cult,” as well as those responsible for last month’s terror attacks in Paris and deadly assault on a school in Pakistan.

[…]

“Unless we get on our high horse and think that this is unique to some other place, remember that during the Crusades and Inquisition, people committed terrible deeds in the name of Christ,” Obama said. “In our home country, slavery and Jim Crow all too often was justified in the name of Christ.

“So it is not unique to one group or one religion,” Obama said. “There is a tendency in us, a simple tendency that can pervert and distort our faith.”

Obama called for all people of faiths to show humility about their beliefs and reject the idea that “God speaks only to us and doesn’t speak to others.”

So let me throw this right back onto the RWM by using their logic and giving you a sample headline:

Well, HotAir, Christians did once behead people and burn people alive.

But, as many devout, faithful, patriotic conservative pure true Christian Americans will attest, Christian nations have now “secularized” and “watered down the truth”, kicked Gd out of the public sphere, etc, so they don’t do that shit anymore.

2 Fourth Football of the Apocalypse  Feb 5, 2015 10:55:57am

Is this the same prayer breakfast in which conservatives had a collective orgasm a year or two ago when loony creationist neurosurgeon Ben Carson likened Obamacare to slavery, etc?

3 HappyWarrior  Feb 5, 2015 11:11:20am

Right wing distorting what Obama actually said. What a shock.

4 Charles Johnson  Feb 5, 2015 11:11:44am

In my opinion, there shouldn’t be a White House “prayer breakfast” at all.

Probably. See, it’s terrible for Obama to point out that terrible things were done in the name of Christianity but it’s just peachy for Dr. Ben shit for brains Carson to liken legislation designed to get people better health care to slavery.

Western civilization became less violent because of secularization. Because they became nations based on secular law rather than religion. Really, there’s nothing wrong with what Obama said at all. Lest we forget that the KKK burns crosses in the name of Christianity. That bombers of abortion clinics think they are doing Christ’s work. Yes violence committed by Muslims is awful but the double standard used against Muslims for violence is pathetic when you look at all that’s done in the name of Christianity and yet no one is saying that Christians should have to swear “oaths of allegiance.”

A Hot Air commenter defends Vlad the Impaler. VLAD THE FREAKING IMPALER.

Just check out the history of the real man who inspired Count Dracula, Vlad “the Impaler” Tepes. He fought the ever advancing Ottoman Turks in Romania, and a case could be made that his legendary brutality was a direct result of the Muslim military threat to his country all of his life.

The Crusades, when Christians had no problem killing Jews all along the Crusader routes to the Holy Land.

The Crusades, where English Christian nobles killed Jews so that the British nobles could avoid having to repay debts to the local Jews.

The Crusades, where Christians killed people all along the route. Because that was so Christian of them.

Let’s also ignore the Western Christian Crusaders (4th Crusade) who decided to lay siege and ultimately sack Constantinople, which was still the Eastern Orthodox Christian home and center of the Eastern Roman Empire. The sacking of Constantinople led to its inevitable weakening that ultimately allowed the Ottoman Turks to overwhelm them in 1453.

It also led to the schism between Eastern and Western Christian Churches.

The one remaining Facebook wingnut’s got a stiffie because Jordan killed a couple of people they were going to kill anyway.

I pointed out that report of over 6,000 ISIS members being killed by the coalition, and all I got back was ‘those numbers are fuzzy, nobody knows how many have been killed.’

So I said, okay, let’s cut that number in half - 3,000 dead ISIS members is a good thing, right?

I was then treated to a rant about how in 2016 we’ll have a strong president who will know how to fight terrorism.

The thing is, I don’t think that the bulk of judgmental assholes consider that a sin for which they need to be forgiven. It seems like many ministries have recognized that it is easier to sell a religion that lets people feel righteous based on how much they disapprove of gay people, unwed mothers, drug addicts or people who use birth control. It is much harder to sell getting people to focus on their own personal failings like greed, laziness, impatience and unkindness.

Roger: Yeah, hey, Bill. Bill, first things first. Ummmm, you just said that you’ve been in combat, but you’ve never been in the military, have you?

O’Reilly: No I have not.

Roger: Then why did you say you’ve been in combat?

O’Reilly: Why do I say that, Roger? Because I was in the middle of a couple of firefights in South and Central America.

Roger: But you’re a media guy.

O’Reilly: Yeah, a media guy with a pen, not a gun. And people were shooting at me, Roger.

Roger: Because people might think that you actually were in the military.

O’Reilly: Ahhhhh. We don’t want to mislead anybody, but I’ve made it quite clear in many, many circumstances …

Roger: No, we don’t want to do that, Bill, because we know how fair and balanced we are …

The other night, I was thinking about what I’d want to have if I was stranded on an island with very little. What music, etc. Then I got to thinking about what people I’d want to have around. As I mulled over the short list, I realized that it was quite a diverse group of people. People of different faiths, different backgrounds, etc. What the folks had in common was that they were good, caring people who I could trust and who shared my compassion for others.

Not a single RW’er on the list. And I know quite a few, working in a VERY Republican area.

Then I realized that the folks on my list had a lot of common with the folks on this blog. Nice!

William, your post reminded me of something. I’ve posted I was raised and schooled 12 years as a Catholic. I used to have an alternative-rock, all originals band back in ‘83 named in reference to Martin Luther’s works.

95 Posters.

No one ever figured out where it came from. 3 of us were Catholic school boy classmates. It fit us.

We had a cool song that left a lot of people stunned when ever we played it. Who’ll Bomb Beirut Today? I don’t know if the way we played it left them stunned, the content…or we sucked. I don’t think we sucked, but our words were not your ordinary lyrics.

And the song was full of the keyboardist doing high key combo organ notes that reflected Middle Eastern music, with the bass player doing slides into big bass chords like bombs, me on drums doing machine gun snare work along with the guitarist.

We broke up shortly after playing it out a couple times, so we never got it recorded in any form. Damn, what I would give to hear that again today.

Yeah but it’s a choice. Isn’t it? People forget. Thinking like that can kill us all.

Yes.

Thought that looked familiar. I stayed at a Holiday Inn in Dearborn many many years ago when the US Grand Prix used to be held in the streets downtown by the RennCen. Drove by the Ford headquarters one morning just to check it out, being a big car lover and all.

Yep. If that’s really not parody, that’s weapons-grade stupid right there.

re: #86 A Cranky One

I sometimes think of strange things late at night when my insomnia acts up (which is most nights).

Nice!

Thanks for being an island of sanity in an ocean of derp!

104 lawhawk  Feb 5, 2015 12:20:49pm

But remember when the right wing was saying how Putin was getting the upper hand on Obama? Yeah, wasn’t that long ago.

Except now the Russian economy is in shambles, the ruble is rubble, oil prices are down by half from a year ago, and Putin can’t find the money to pay off on his Sochi experiment, so he’s going to dump it all on the Russian people who can least afford it.

Wait, that sounds exactly like what the GOP would do here. It IS a match made in … well, somewhere.

It’s interesting that nobody ever mentions the religion of narco-terrorists in the western hemisphere.

Another day, more false rightwinger outrage.

And many of them are pissed about that new show Fresh Off The Boat too. Because the Asians in it called white people white people. lol

Highly suggest everyone watch it. It’s comedy gold. Set in 1995 Florida.

Was there mention around these parts about the 2008 Pentagon study that researched if Vladimir Putin has Asperger’s syndrome? I guess the report was released yesterday. I heard about it on the news earlier today.

Here is a link to Time article about it…

Seems that way. Judge like hell during the week. Go to church for forgiveness for being a constant judgmental asshole.

What? Money?

They’ll never speak about that. It might make money merely a form of value exchange rather than a demonstration of the superiority of the people who have lots of it.

A history of measles, a virus as old as civilization.

Well, rinderpest is as old as cattle-herding, maybe…but measles didn’t mutate from it till the 10th or 11th Century A.D.

Meanwhile rinderpest has been eradicated since there are no antivaxxer cows.
