Helicopter Pilot Backs Up Part of Brian Williams’ Story

The fog of war?
Media • Views: 28,615

This is interesting; apparently the Brian Williams story may not be the clear-cut case of lying it’s been made out to be: Helicopter Pilot: Actually, Yes, Brian Williams’ Chopper Did Take Fire in 2003.

Krell appeared to back up at least some of what Williams has said during repeated tellings of the story over the past decade, even if the anchor did get some things wrong. The most striking thing that Krell said was that the military helicopter Williams was riding in did in fact come under enemy fire, though it was not from an RPG.

“Some of things he’s said are not true. But some of the things they’re saying against him are not true either,” Krell told CNN.

Their helicopter was second in a formation of three aircraft carrying bridge parts, according to Krell. The first helicopter was hit with the RPG attack, which Williams likely did not witness from his seat in the back of the chopper.

All three of the helicopters were hit by small arms fire, however, according to Krell.

Williams also interviewed Dick Cheney who has a history of shooting people.

This actually lends more support to the “false memory” theory. At the least, it muddies things up nicely.

Nope, I still consider Williams to be a liar. The difference between taking fire and falling out of the sky is immense.

I despise the man, but in this case he was wrongly accused.

O’Reilly admitted to it:

Franken said he looked into the claims that the show had won such an award and found no record of it. O’Reilly later told him he had misspoke and it was a Polk Award that was given to the show, not a Peabody.

As the book industry crowd nervously laughed at the unexpected showdown unfolding before them Franken chided: “Don’t you think it’s odd you got it wrong about a journalism award?”

O’Reilly: But I tell you what, I’ve been in combat. I’ve seen it. I’ve been close to it. And if my unit is in danger and I got a captured guy and the guy knows where the enemy is and I’m looking him in the eye, the guy better tell me. That’s all I’m gonna tell you. If it’s life or death, he’s going first. Roger [caller], Portland, Oregon. What say you, Roger?

[…]

O’Reilly: Why do I say that, Roger? Because I was in the middle of a couple of firefights in South and Central America.

[…]

O’Reilly: Yeah, a media guy with a pen, not a gun. And people were shooting at me, Roger.

[…]

O’Reilly: Yeah, hey, listen, Roger, you know what? You can take your little “fair and balanced” uhhhh snip remark and shove it. Okay? You’re not getting on this air. And you, Mr. Macho Man, would have never come close to anything that I’ve done down where I’ve been. Okay? So take a walk and … well, ‘nuff said.

This is the ‘net. A little flea can be made into an invading force of space alien invaders.

Everyone is taking the story and making it seem like Williams personally told each and every one of them a lie. In a way had he said it on his TV gig, then yes, he was telling everyone. However, it was a small group that heard it, and did they even hear it right, or are some of them out to attack a name?

I give credit to anyone that is out in public. The ‘net makes that a whole different ball game now. Tweeting doesn’t help. Right or wrong you can be lynched by the angry mobs carrying Ipads.

So, where my local RS is, there’s a Walmart (cell phones), and ATT cell phone store, a potential Sprint cell phone store, and a Staples (I think they sell phones, could be wrong).

There are exactly nine stores in this location. Maybe Sprint will be the next one to go belly up.

I agree, but then Fox would have no staff if we applied that standard (Hmm, maybe we’re onto something here.)

The reason I think Logan’s lying was worse is because she did it on a major broadcast and it was a lie that was about a current story.

Williams was more braggadocio—stupid and unnecessary, but not really a game-changer on a news story.

Also, some of the people accusing Williams of making stuff up have their facts wrong as well. This is what they were saying from the original report:

Stars and Stripes reported Wednesday that “Williams arrived in the area about an hour later on another helicopter after the other three had made an emergency landing, the crew members said.”

And this is what the pilot of the helicopter Williams rode in said:

Williams was in the back of Krell’s aircraft along with three other NBC staffers. Krell referred to his Chinook as the “second bird” in the formation. The “first bird,” right in front of the “second bird,” was struck by the RPG.

One thing I’ve found in my limited use of slow cookers is that the cooking times are much shorter than the times shown in the recipes (so keep that in mind). Glad that you’re liking the recipe!

I will be keeping an eye on it (it’s on high right now) and move it to low and/or warm as necessary.

I also have a lentil curry recipe from that site to try later this week/next week. I need more tasty meals that can be done to freeze as well.

She really is hellbent on proving Fitzgerald wrong about there being no second acts in American life and she is eager to make her fifteen minutes of fame last as long as possible. I just wish she would go back to Wasilla and leave the rest of us alone who find her act sickening in how she always has to get a cheap shot in at the president who she seems to have a personal vendetta against and her utter contempt for anyone who isn’t a wingnut nutjob like herself.

OT a bit, but I need to rant: I came home early from work for a cable Internet install, scheduled for 1-5 PM. 6 PM arrived and no installer. I get ahold of the customer service rep. My order has been CANCELED…. Okay, so why am I the last one to know this?! I get it re-ordered and the next available installation is for next week. And right about then is when I lost patience. Thankfully they’re going to see if they can squeeze me in earlier, but seriously? You guys fucked up and I’m the one getting penalized for it? Maybe going through with the install wasn’t the smartest idea.

My new neighbors got hosed like that right after they moved in. Both grad students and needed the internet access ASAP for easing getting to stuff for university work. So I let them piggyback off my wireless for a week or so until things got straightened out.

Also seeing messages on the building community site about people thinking FioS is too slow and looking towards switching to Comcast. Along with other messages from residents who find Comcast too slow and are looking to switch to FioS. You’re doomed either way folk - you get get to choose which company screws you.

(And Comcast has been showing noticable slowing every night from about 8:30pm through 11:00pm. Watch my Mbps running YouTube videos drop from 52 to 13, and then hover between 13 and 26 for over an hour.

Thankfully most of that month we were gone (Christmas) because it would not have been pretty otherwise.

It still wasn’t pretty, and took some escalating, culminating in phone calls and using insider connections to get some service now, DAMMIT.

This is the first month I approached said cap, and in addition to being more expensive for inferior bandwidth, it was time to switch. Experiments with the Feline Overlord Drone Force continues.

Crash rate has decreased - so I have been able to keep the copter aloft for >10-20 seconds at a time. I also discovered that having the heat running at the same time set up a “jet stream” about 8’ up that would trigger loss of control and a crash.

Flight control is very limited and the copter spins around itself a lot. I should probably go look up what additional adjustments can be made since the control’s built in yaw control is not sufficient. But I didn’t expect that much for $20.

The cats dislike the whine of the copter, but do like watching it fly around. And they go over to sniff at it (and maybe a tentative pawing) after a crash occurs. No attempts yet to bring it down out of mid-air yet.

And both cats have been struck by a crashing copter. No injuries, and it hasn’t made them frightened of it yet.

Next step might be seeing if something quieter can be found. I know there are R/C bird toys that are effectively ornithcopters (sp). Will have to see how steep one of those are. But it’s a toy for me as well. :)

I am sooo happy that I live in a basically heathen area of eastern Kentucky where we have at least a hundred churches (most of them homemade non-denominational) where people attend just so they can answer the question “what church do you go to?”
Go into the city next county over and you get crazy people at the old meat bin at Kroger’s asking very very seriously “have you been saved?” I look around and ask “Where’s the SWAT team?”
Kentucky is such a weird place.
