Katrina Photos Show the Streets Around Brian Williams’ Hotel *Were* Flooded

Murky story is murky
Media • Views: 37,844

As if the Brian Williams story weren’t already murky enough, the helicopter pilot interviewed yesterday on CNN is now questioning his memories that partly supported Williams’ account.

I text-messaged Krell before dawn, and asked him to call me as soon as he woke up. He replied with this text:

“Good morning. The information I gave you was true based on my memories, but at this point I am questioning my memories that I may have forgotten or left something out.”

He said, “For the past 12 years I have been trying to forget everything that happened in Iraq and Afghanistan; now that I let it back, the nightmares come back with it, so I want to forget again.”

He concluded, “The men in that article deserve respect. Please understand.”

Meanwhile, our stalker friend Chuck C. Johnson launched another front in the war against Williams yesterday, claiming that Williams’ story of seeing a dead body from his hotel room in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina had to be false, because the French Quarter was not flooded and therefore he could not have seen a floating corpse. This story has now spread to mainstream sources (and Chuck is freaking out because nobody is crediting him for it).

But as usual, it now looks like Chuck has jumped to conclusions based on no solid evidence again, and is very likely wrong — because the hotel where Williams apparently stayed was surrounded by flooded streets, with water deep enough to float a boat, and bodies were recovered from the area around the hotel: Katrina Photos Show Water Did Surround Ritz-Carlton, Where NBC Anchor Brian Williams Stayed.

While doubters have noted correctly that the Quarter, New Orleans’ original high ground, remained largely if not completely dry, photographs and news reports from the time indicate there was flooding around the Ritz-Carlton, where Williams apparently stayed. Hotel representative Darren Crumpton said Friday the Ritz could not confirm Williams was there because it does not disclose the identity of guests for privacy reasons.

The hotel is located on Canal Street between Burgundy and Dauphine streets — technically just outside the Quarter, which is bounded by Esplande Avenue, the Mississippi River, and Iberville and North Rampart streets.

Pictures shot at the time by a guest at the hotel show there was water outside the Ritz. It’s unclear how deep the water was: It’s shallow enough that the sidewalk below is clearly visible, but also deep enough that a boat is bobbing in the water. It is also unclear exactly what day the pictures were taken.

A Times-Picayune account from Sept. 1, 2005, cites a hotel manager describing the hotel as being surrounded by water, and discussing the Ritz’ efforts to evacuate guests. A subsequent report on Sept. 8 by the same reporter, Rebecca Mowbray, says the Ritz sustained significant flood damage and was shuttered. It would remain closed for at least 15 months while it invested $100 million plus in a renovation of the property, according to news accounts.

Whether or not Williams indeed saw a body in floating in the water from his hotel room window is likely unverifiable, but waterlogged corpses were not an uncommon sight in the days after the hurricane. A number of bodies were recovered in that general area, according to Times-Picayune accounts from the time and a New York Times map tracking the location of the bodies.

Here are the photos shot by Charles M. Herring at the time:

Like I said. It sounds like Williams was just confused about what constitutes the “French Quarter”. Common tourist mistake,

Looks like the French Quarter west of Rampart was flooded, east of Rampart was dry.

As I posted before, here’s where New Orleans actually flooded. Parts of the French Quarter did flood. Many areas adjacent to the French Quarter flooded.

Parts of the French Quarter were spared because it sits at higher ground than most of the surrounding area. But flooding was reported.

To say that the French Quarter didn’t flood is just wrong. It didn’t flood as bad as say the Lower Ninth, or Slidell, or other areas of Louisiana, but it wasn’t free of flood damage either.

As to Williams’ claims, well, I still think he should be fired for his statements re: the helicopter incident. There’s evidence there was flooding in the French Quarter. It’s indisputable that there were bodies recovered floating in Katrina flood waters. Did Williams see bodies floating in the French Quarter?

I’m trying to track down a map showing where remains were recovered, but haven’t as yet. Most of the ones I’ve seen aren’t sufficiently specific - attributing recoveries to a region affected by Katrina and not a block by block.

For instance, the Times Picayune indicates that the French Quarter had a death rate of between 5-10 per 1000 residents during Katrina. Neighboring CBD (central business district) was harder hit, but the area east of the FQ was less affected).

I don’t have any fucks to give for Chucky, or Brian Williams. After enlarging the shot with the boat I’d say that water is damn shallow, maybe a foot or less. Figure a 6” sidewalk height, and 6” sash on the window bottoms.

27 lawhawk  Feb 6, 2015 11:38:50am

re: #25 Charles Johnson

Yup, that’s the one. Overlays the major flooding and bodies recovered. 37 recovered in the CBD/French Quarter. In other words, it is plausible that Williams did see remains of someone who died in the flooding in the French Quarter.

Several bodies were recovered in close proximity to the Ritz Carlton, which is located at 921 Canal.

As to Williams’ claims, well, I still think he should be fired for his statements re: the helicopter incident.

I’m not so sure. He was in one of many helicopters flying in a formation some of which took fire. The precise details of which exact weapons struck which exact helicopters seems immaterial to me overall. The fact that he was probably pretty scared makes it likelier that he would garble or possibly misunderstand what others said about the precise specifics of the attacks when they were grounded immediately afterward. It is possible that one of the other soldiers could have unknowingly conveyed mistaken information to him before all the facts were precisely figured out.

Mostly what I think he deserves some flak for though is making himself too much of either story. He was supposed to report the news, not be the news.

re: #26 Great White Snark

The article linked in the post has one witness who claimed the water was up to three feet high at its peak.

Capt. James Scott, who during Katrina commanded the New Orleans Police Department’s First District, just outside the French Quarter, said his memories of the days after the storm are somewhat blurred and he couldn’t specifically recall a body outside the Ritz-Carlton.

But Scott said Williams’ accounts appear to be “a fair assessment” of the conditions when the water in the city reached its height.

“There was a time when Canal Street had water on it. They had about three feet on Canal, but kind of the dividing line for a lot of it, once it went down, was Rampart Street.

“But for a period of time the water was everywhere except in the old Quarter and by the river.”

“They did have water, and they had bodies around there initially, from the drownings. So there was bodies. I had a body right at the First District station that was floating at St. Louis and Rampart. When the water was high, there was a body right there.”

but i do agree that in those pics it looks 6 inches max

re: #29 Charles Johnson

They’re ranting and raving about Al Sharpton? Newt Gingrich also owes a bunch in taxes too. Where’s the outrage? Oh wait, he’s the respected GOP tactician.

Newt had owe the IRS $26k, and all of his creditors a total of $4.6 million. He still owes nearly all of that amount:

Federal records from October indicate Gingrich’s “Newt 2012” presidential campaign owed the IRS $26,507 for an “income tax liability” and “income tax payment” as of Sept. 30.

Newt 2012’s IRS debt is just one of dozens that his campaign still owes to entities ranging from Comcast to Twitter to Herman Cain Solutions, a political and consulting organization run by its namesake, the former 2012 Republican presidential candidate. The debts together total more than $4.6 million; Newt 2012 raised a meager $37,822 during 2014’s fourth quarter, with about half that money coming from the campaign renting the personal information of supporters to a data broker.

Taylor Swindle, chief financial officer for Gingrich’s media company Gingrich Productions, said this week the Newt 2012 committee has “paid off the IRS since that October filing.” An updated disclosure Newt 2012 made Wednesday with the FEC indicates the committee paid off most of its IRS debts in late 2014 but still owed the tax agency $1,007 as the new year began.

So, he’s a deadbeat.

Oh, and Herman Cain? He’s also mentioned as being a deadbeat. Not only does he owe money to the FEC for fines, but Newt owes him money too.

My favorite type of call:

“Hi, we’re new to this whole process, but the reports you gave us don’t work. Your whole process is wrong.

“You mean the report format given to us and designed by the organization you work for, which have been in use for the last 5 months, and which multiple other clients are using with absolutely no problem whatsoever?”

“Yes, we tried to use them for the very first time ever here, and we can’t figure out what we’re doing wrong, so obviously the fault lies in the material you provided.”

“Yes, I’m sure that is the problem.”

It’s the MSNBC connection. At one time Bill-O tried to paint the entire G.E. corporation as a den of eeeeevil secular humanism because they owned NBCUniversal at the time.
Of course, whenever someone tried to connect FOX TV with FOX NEWS, they’re all, “Oh, that’s a totally different thing”, even though they’re both Newscorp.

Anyone who’s spreading the rumors about the IRS “withholding” the common folks’ refunds this year is full of shit. However, if you’re filing a 100+ page return, you can wait.

It took them less than a week to deposit my grandson’s substantial refund in his checking account. I filed it for him via Turbo Tax online. Easy peasy since he doesn’t itemize deductions. Took about 15 mins, tops.

Scott Walker Deletes The Values Of Truth And Service From University Mission

thinkprogress.org

“Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker has come under fire this week not only for proposing a controversial and unprecedented $300 million cut to the University of Wisconsin, but because his new budget deleted the values of truth and service from the University’s 100-plus-year-old mission and replaced them with the idea that the purpose of public higher education is “to meet the state’s workforce needs.”

“Governor Walker’s edits erased language from the school’s founding principles — known as the “Wisconsin Idea” — that declares: “Basic to every purpose of the system is the search for truth.” The Governor also struck out the University’s goal of “public service designed to educate people and improve the human condition” and “serve and stimulate society.”

“But after professors, students and alumni across the state sounded the alarm about these changes — which were buried in the nearly 2,000 page budget and not mentioned in the Governor’s budget speech — Walker began to back-pedal, calling the change a “drafting error” and promising to restore the lofty goals he deleted.” More

Walker is such a douche, but he’s not fooling anyone in higher ed w/his BS.

So much for Walker, who barely was able to maintain a C average (2.59/4.0 GPA) and dropped out in his sr year. A little background: politifact.com

Think I’ll go watch a movie.

It was a weird interaction between search engines crawling old pages and a database query that would go into deadlock, but only on rare occasions. Took years to find the cause. Woot!

Agreed. That being said, one day I tracked down a really weird bug and came up with 3 potential fixes, all of which resulted in some form of weird inconsistent behavior. I randomly chose one of the 3 fixes and told the QA folks, “Look, I know it’s not perfect, but this is the best I could come up with.” They laughed when I explained.

He wanted to know names of witnesses as well who testified to the Grand Jury. The indictment says he threatened to veto legislation that would have cut funding to the public integrity office of the Travis County DA unless the DA resigned, thereby making it an official “threat” from the State to a County official.

But it’s also possible that Mr. Williams was not caught in a lie: that he, in fact, misremembered. Those throwing stones at him now, veterans and media wags alike, do so armed with the presumption that no one — least of all the stone-thrower — could possibly misremember such a harrowing life event. And because we assume we would never misremember such an event, it follows that Mr. Williams wouldn’t either, and that he must have lied.

That’s a flimsy armor, even though most of us believe it — and we believe it, because the alternative violates our own intuitions, and would be an admission that much of what we recall of our own lives is possibly untrue, or at least unreliably filtered. That filter catches certain bits, and throws out others, and that selective memory is abetted by the passage of time.

Yes. That’s why I went with ‘slaves’. Voting depended on state and even local law. In fact, for a short time in the late 1700’s women could and did vote in New Jersey—someone had neglected to prohibit it. Subsequent constitutions fixed that.

It should be noted that racing Greyhounds, bred to chase something the size of a cat, furry like a cat, and moving at the speed of a cat vary conisderably in their prey drive. Our Greyhound adoption agency (Golden State Greyhound Adoption) ‘cat tests’ all their hounds and bases their placements on that. Zeena and Rango are both ‘cat safe’, though we don’t have a cat.

This shouldn’t be a surprise at this point, but since FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler pissed off the big telcos and cable companies by telling them he was going to re-institute net neutrality provisions (which had originally been struck down by the Supremes in a lawsuit won by Verizon a couple of years ago) by classifying ISPs as “common carriers”, they’ve been trying to find his Kryptonite. Astroturfing hasn’t worked so far, so they’re taking a more direct route: tasking their bought-and-paid-for GOP Congresscritters to start up investigations to see if President Obama leaned too hard on Chairman Wheeler and the FCC.

Ars Technica: Republicans claim Obama had “improper influence” over net neutrality

Here is Havoc. When rescued, his tail had been docked and the puppy mill had been trying to pass him off as a Norwich, but he’s either a small cairn or a mix. His fur looks like Murphy’s when it isn’t groomed.

Havoc

Terriers were breed as autonomous killing machines ;) They love to hunt and are very tenacious. Many types were intended as rodent dogs. Unlike cats, who will ignore prey under some circumstances, terriers don’t quit. Havoc has killed two bunnies and a squirrel…

Having said that, he and cats just ignore each other. I don’t think you need worry much unless you see Murphy chasing the cats. If they stand their ground and warn him, I suspect a quick peace. I would immediately discourage him from chasing them though.

Consider a controlled introduction, where Murphy is under your control and bring a cat into the same room. Give them a chance to see/smell each other and use the opportunity to let Murphy know that no hostility (growling, etc.) is acceptable toward the cats.
