Associated Press Confirms Flooding and Floating Bodies Near Brian Williams’ Hotel During Katrina

The Ginger Avenger’s big scoop blows up
Media • Views: 55,044

Following up on our previous post about the now almost certainly false claim launched by wingnut stalker Chuck C. Johnson that NBC anchor Brian Williams was “lying” about seeing a dead body floating in a flooded street from his hotel room in New Orleans, the Associated Press has now confirmed that:

  1. Brian Williams was staying at the Ritz Carlton Hotel.
  2. The Ritz Carlton did experience severe flooding.
  3. There were definitely dead bodies floating in the streets in this area.

Here’s the AP report: NBC Launches Internal Probe on Brian Williams’ Iraq Claims. (h/t: @ProgressGA.)

Questions also were raised about statements Williams made on coverage of Hurricane Katrina, which was one of his proudest moments at NBC. In a 2006 interview with former Disney CEO Michael Eisner, Williams twice referenced seeing a body float down a street in New Orleans.

“When you look out of your hotel room window in the French Quarter and watch a man float by face down, when you see bodies that you last saw in Banda Aceh, Indonesia, and swore to yourself that you would never see in your country,” Williams said.

[…]

The remarks drew suspicion because during Katrina there was relatively little flooding in New Orleans’ French Quarter.

Williams was staying at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in New Orleans, according to an NBC source who was not authorized to speak on personnel matters and requested anonymity.

Police Capt. James Scott, who was a commander in the downtown area, said he saw a body floating along the edge of the French Quarter on a street about four blocks from the Ritz-Carlton, which was surrounded by up to 3 feet of water.

Alex Brandon, a Washington-based photographer for The Associated Press, said there was enough water to launch a flat-bottomed boat from in front of the Ritz. He said he photographed a dead body floating on another street a few blocks from the Ritz.

If Brian Williams lied about his helicopter being shot down in Iraq, that’s still a serious problem for him. But the news outlets that fell for Chuck C. Johnson’s bogus story claiming he was also lying about seeing a floating body from his hotel room were clearly taken in by a right wing con man.

We can only hope that more of the media have learned their lesson now about treating this guy as a credible source.

From hotel executive.com

In 1989, Ms. deGersdorff joined Ritz-Carlton, helping to expand the luxury chain from just eight hotels, opening new properties in Pentagon City, Tysons Corner, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Cancun. She managed a total renovation and three years of food and beverage operations in Washington D.C., leaving when promoted to general manager in Kansas City, where she significantly improved guest and employee satisfaction and profit retention. She then returned to Pentagon City as general manager, leading 800 employees and guests through the 9/11 attacks on the Pentagon.

Following tenure as general manager in Philadelphia, she was promoted in 2005 to area general manager for the company’s three hotels in New Orleans. Amidst the tragedy, with 1,200 guests and employees stranded in flood waters from Hurricane Katrina, her decisive crisis management saved lives.

From the Construction company that performed the repairs.

Gootee Construction has a long standing relationship with The Ritz-Carlton New Orleans. Prior to Hurricane Katrina, we performed several exterior renovations and upgrades. The hotel sustained significant storm damage, and Gootee restored it to its pre-storm condition. Everything in the flooded basement was repaired and restored—staff offices, the laundry system, and AHUs for the first three floors.

Sorry to go OT so early, but posting from downstairs:
Another puppy break.

After looking at some photos, and doing a bit of googling, it’s apparent to me that Murphy isn’t a Cairn, but is possibly a Glen of Imaal Terrier. Which is fine, except for the relationship with the two cats. These dogs were bred to hunt small animals like cats, so I’m not sure about that. He’s been interested in the cats, but I can’t see it as a killer instinct. Just kinda “What’s this?” The cats are going crazy atm.

Anyone have similar breeds who also has cats?

Adding, I hope he and the cats are able to co-exist. He’s really smart, trained even, and very happy to be here.

Happy day, long day!

Personally, my family and I are fine. My family is safe in Jackson, Miss., and I am now a temporary resident of the Ritz Carleton Hotel in New Orleans.[…]

Things were obviously bad yesterday, but they are much worse today. Overnight the water arrived. Now Canal Street (true to its origins) is indeed a canal. The first floor of all downtown buildings is underwater.

On the day the convention ended, there was a storm. My return was delayed for several days.. It was wonderful.

I would walk to Bourbon Street, the music was fabulous. A bar playing classical blues with three old black musicians and a young white musician with long blond hair and not a soul in the bar talking or doing anything except listening.

Two building s farther along (still carrying the same drink) , and a three piece hard rock band is playing.

The water in my hotel was up to my knees in the lobby for two days.

Going back to Bourbon street is on my bucket list.

UpChuck is the Boy Who Cried Wolf, personified. And I stress the word “boy,” because he’s got the maturity of a 14-year-old, or younger. He’s so desperate to impress people with a BIG SCOOP that he’ll latch onto any will o’the wisp idea and insist it’s 100% true.

For example,

And when people call out his obvious mistakes, he’s outraged! He’s fundamentally incapable of admitting error.

The scary thing is, I look at Chuck’s behavior and think “either this is pants-shitting stupid vainglory, or it’s a perfectly good business strategy for wheedling cash from wingnuts.”

Williams did yeoman work at local TV stations, and worked his way up the broadcasting ladder to his current seat as anchor. A fair amount of broadcast journalism is rip-and-read (edit and read the news wire), which print media reporters use to scoff that broadcast reporters are not really journalists. On the other hand (I’m speaking as a former print journalist), Williams has reported from some dangerous locations and done a creditable job. He’s not Edward R. Murrow, but he’s not a total loser, either.

There is a range of conditions from precautionary landing, to forced landing, to ‘shot down’. Over the years of retelling that kind of precision can easily be lost.

Image: Happy day, long day!

The cats were there first, and the house is well marked by their scent.

The dog is new to the territory, so he and the cats (who will probably hide and avoid the dog for some days to a week or so) will work things out.

Just relax and don’t rush them to get along.

So… This is a thing. Saw it on the news tonight and looked it up to kinda gut check. WTH are these people thinking.

A pox party (also measles party, flu party etc.) is a social activity where children are deliberately exposed to an infectious disease, supposedly to promote immunity. Such parties are typically organized by anti-vaccinationists on the premise of building the immune systems of their children against diseases such as chickenpox and measles (which can be more dangerous to adults than to children) or flu. Such practices are highly controversial and are discouraged by public health officials in favor of vaccination.[1] In the USA, if the exposure involves the United States Postal Service to swap contaminated items, the practice is illegal.[2]

Before vaccines, I suspect some of the thought was to develop the immunity. Particularly for something like chicken pox, where exposure as a child is less likely to develop severe symptoms/consequences.*

These days it’s completely stupid, but so is being anti-vax.

Two reasons:

One, because he is the source of all misery, as is illustrated by this convenient diagram.

Two—the less satisfying reason—because I sometimes land upon strange notions and find them hilarious.

Three—do you have any time how many times I can listen to “Cherry, Cherry” and “Holly Holy” in one sitting? Many, many times. That shit is catchy.

Gov. Walker’s ‘Drafting Error’

It was not enough for Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin suddenly to propose a destructive 13 percent cut in state support for the University of Wisconsin’s widely respected system. His biennial budget plan, released Tuesday, reached gratuitously into the university’s hallowed 111-year-old mission statement to delete a bedrock principle: “Basic to every purpose of the system is the search for truth.”

The budget — patently tailored for the governor’s conservative campaign for the Republican presidential nomination — inserted language that the university should be more narrowly concerned with meeting “the state’s work force needs.”

Brazenly deleted as well from the mission statement, which is nationally appreciated in education circles as the Wisconsin Idea, were the far from controversial goals “to educate people and improve the human condition” and “serve and stimulate society.” It was as if a trade school agenda were substituted for the idea of a university.

Colorado offered free birth control — and teen births fell by 40 percent

A program that provides contraceptives to low-income women contributed to a 40-percent drop in Colorado’s teen birth rate between 2009 and 2013, according to state officials.

The program, known as the Colorado Family Planning Initiative, provides intrauterine devices (IUDs) or implants at little to no cost for low-income women at 68 family planning clinics in Colorado.

The teen abortion rate dropped by 35 percent from 2009 to 2012 in counties served by the program, according to the state’s estimates.

Young women served by the family planning clinics also accounted for about three-fourths of the overall decline in Colorado’s teen birth rate. And the infant caseload for Colorado WIC, a nutrition program for low-income women and their babies, fell by 23 percent from 2008 to 2013.

Honestly I do think Williams could well have been embellishing. I have no doubt that he could have seen bodies floating elsewhere in the city and just reported it near his hotel where there was standing water. I’ve been DM’ing Myra and it seems like the water was highest at Canal St and probably wasn’t deep enough at the backs and sides to float a body, for whatever that’s worth. We both kind of find it hard to believe that they’d let a body stay facedown in water for long in Canal Street in front of two five star hotels, but it’s technically possible that he saw it there. It’s also possible Williams had some binoculars and was looking out further than directly next to the building. I also have no doubt that a body that is sitting face down in a few inches of water may look like it’s “floating” when it technically is not. If I saw something like that I’d probably turn away and might just assume it was moving when it wasn’t.

At the end of the day people did die in Katrina. There were floaters, it was a human tragedy, and there was flooding at the R-C. Williams may well have constructed the incident he reported from other things he did actually see earlier that day or in the week, kind of like William Hurt faking his reaction shot in Broadcast News. If he did then yeah, that’s unethical, but there’s no smoking gun here.

Republican Sends Out Questionnaire So Repugnant, Not A Single Judicial Candidate Would Answer It

A newly elected 29-year-old South Carolina state representative is making waves just days after he was sworn into office. In South Carolina, judges are elected by the legislature, so Jonathon Hill decided he’d send out a thirty question survey to every candidate currently campaigning for a judgeship, to get to know them better. The problem is Rep. Hill’s questions were so blatantly illegal, he’s now defending himself against complaints his questions violated the U.S. Constitution.

To their credit, not a single candidate responded to Rep. Hill. Instead, the Judicial Merit Selection Commission, which oversees next week’s election, contacted Rep. Hill to inform him that asking prospective judges specific questions about their spiritual beliefs amounts to a “religious test,” which is explicitly forbidden by the U.S. Constitution, which holds:

“no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.”

Additionally, they told Rep. Hill that the Code of Judicial Conduct bans judges from answering many of his questions because doing so would be tantamount to a promise to a decide future cases a certain way.

This is me, turning off the Bill Maher show for the very last time.

*click*

C’mon in, the water’s fine.

I started listening to the podcast version of the show (soundtrack, essentially) a few years back. This was around the time I started getting hip to the anti-vax movement in the US.

Once Maher’s alt med lunacy became apparent (hand washing wiped out polio, not vaccines), I stopped listening. After about 2 years or so, I picked it up again. Maher seemed to have dialed back the Jenny McCarthy crap.

I bailed for good back in October, right after Ben Affleck called him out for his “I’m not saying ALL Muslims are murderers, just all of them” bigotry. So I’ve been fortunate in that I’ve missed all of the anti-vax nonsense.

What’s even more ridiculous is that Maher actually is a supporter of the HPV fax. “What?!??!”, I can hear you saying. “Surely, Matt, what manner of reality warping has brought this nigh unthinkable proclamation to materialize??”

Glad you asked. He’d never admit it, but a lot of conservatives are against the HPV vax because it turn young girls into slatternly sex fiends, or some idiocy like that. That’s the only reason Maher approves of that shot.

If conservatives hated the straight-up flu shot like that, Maher would be traveling from drug store to drug store nationwide, telling people they’re fucking idiots if they don’t get their flu shots now. As opposed to his current line of thought.

I just try to chalk it up that everyone has their faults, but what upsets me is that faults like these result in measles epidemics at Disneyland.

The problem with that cartoon is the punchline/caption isn’t clear enough that the kid’s parents didn’t get him his shot. Should read:

If you connect the measles, it says “My parents are anti-vax idiots.”

Completely nit-picking, but some kids who are getting the measles can’t get the vax for legitimate medical reasons. In theory, that kid in the cartoon could be one of them.

Trust me on this; I’ve screwed up enough captions to know of what I speak.

217 lawhawk  Feb 7, 2015 6:10:01am

So, the bad week for Gov. Christie continues. His former top guy at the Port Authority is being investigated for flights he took between NYC and his home in SC. Apparently, United Airlines started service between Newark and Columbia SC. That also happens to be near where Sampson has a weekend home. And Christie appointee, Jamie Fox, who is the State Transportation Commissioner, worked as a lobbyist for, you guessed it, United Airlines.

United canceled the route several days after Sampson resigned. Records show that the flights were only about half full. Hmmmm..

And in a story about how a NJ legislator is trying to curb the religious exemption for vaccines, there’s a nugget about how the Department of Health expanded the exemption after Christie came into office.

New Jersey used to require parents to explain how a vaccine conflicts with their religious beliefs. In 2010, however, shortly after Christie first took office, the Health Department established a new rule that said authorities can’t question parents who declare their objection to a vaccine on religious grounds — as long as their exemption request uses the word “religious” or “religion.” The number of exemptions more than doubled over the next three years.

“If you make a note and don’t want a vaccine, you’re out,” Conaway said. “Religious exemptions should be narrow. The wider it is, the more illness you will have,” he said.

Conaway said he expects to discuss tightening the regulations soon with state Health Commissioner Mary E. O’Dowd.

It might, in part, explain why Christie got so cranky about the vaccine questions.

I applaud the legislator’s attempt to curb the exemptions, but he doesn’t go nearly far enough. It should be eliminated entirely.

Lot’s of data, lots of time but little money spent. Or what was spent was corrupted. As a %, one of the most successful urban evacuations ever. And still wildly inadequate. Coast Guard rescued many thousands.

Frankly, residences that are below sea level and coastal should be illegal. Planet wide. Is that gonna happen? Nope. Not even in NOLA or Californias Venice.

BTW to point out an on the ground reality about disaster preparedness-Kudos to LA Mayor Garcetti for pushing a wood frame residence earthquake upgrades. Conceptually that apartment renters would share or bear the full cost which can be very high. Discussions continue but where else does money come from in an apartment building? The property value often grows but that just on paper until you sell. Home owners bear the full cost.

.

A Los Angeles City Council member wants to allow owners who seismically retrofit apartment buildings to pass on the costs to tenants.

Councilman Bernard C. Parks said he wants the city to explore exempting these apartment owners from the city’s rent-control law as part of a larger effort by city officials to strengthen thousands of buildings vulnerable to collapse during a major earthquake.

Under existing laws, only 50% of the cost of major apartment rehabilitation projects can be passed through to tenants, Parks said. Parks wants city staff to evaluate passing through all the costs to tenants but do it “over a reasonable period of time.”

This having been said, either we spend now or FEMA spends later. Heres a crazy idea-If FEMA or the Feds can help build a levee, why not help reinforce high density dwellings in part? We don’t get a couple days warning for a quake. The new warning system will give us a good fraction of a minute.

A comprehensive list of Chuck’s anonymous sources:

- a Cheeto
- a Toots and the Maytals album
- a completely different chicken than the one mentioned in the list of things I trust more than Chuck Johnson
- atmospheric nitrogen
- a coffee stain
- Neil Diamond (BECAUSE THERE’S REALLY NOT ANY OTHER WAY YOU CAN DISAPPOINT US MORE, IS THERE, NEIL?)
- the withered soul of William F Buckley Murray Rothbard, captured in a silver thimble that a duck wears as a hat
- yet another chicken
- a chunk of todalite gneiss
- a piece of paper with the word “anonymous source” written on it
- a Flamin’ Hot Cheeto

Corrected. William F. Buckley repented of the racist things he’d said in the 50’s and publicly admitted he’d been wrong. He also had way too much class to be associated with UpChuck, even as a ‘withered soul’. Rothbard, on the other hand, hung out with militia types and was actively praising them less than a month before the OKC bombing. He had the bad timing and amorality needed to associate with Chuckles.

He also had way too much class to be associated with UpChuck, even as a ‘withered soul’. Rothbard, on the other hand, hung out with militia types and was actively praising them less than a month before the OKC bombing. He had the bad timing and amorality needed to associate with Chuckles.

As conservative as Buckley was, he was also a pragmatist. He recognized the Whackos for what they were and called them out.

Very true, and his death was a disaster of the first magnitude for the conservative cause, for we now lack anyone with the internal-to-the-movement stature to cast out crazies as effectively as he did.

Yet he and his publication continued to support apartheid.

Until the Soviet threat receded, most conservatives felt that the need to prevent a communist takeover of South Africa outweighed the evil of apartheid, especially given South Africa crucial geographic position and its mineral resources (especially gold). Geopolitics during the Cold War often caused the US to ally with people we didn’t like.

No, because the African National Congress had been a Soviet client. the White Pigment gene is present in all creatures. We don’t see many all white (not albino) animals in nature because younguns of white pigmentation stand out and are eaten by predators. The only place the white pigment gene is a benefit is in the polar regions —hence, polar bears, artic foxex and the amur tiger (which mostly comes in a lighter orange color, but also white)

WTF, is a white tiger any more or less of a tiger than an orange tiger?

Tigers are tigers, foxes are foxes and humans are humans.

Funny how communism loomed ominously in the form of any liberal movement that complained about brutal labor practices, preposterously corrupt government-international business relations, and the occasional round of car battery/genital torture.
