Dude has you blocked, but still includes your handle in tweets and is in the comments in a lot of your UpChuck-related tweets. Every time his internet sludge oozes we’re going to mercilessly call him out, as we have done. I really hope Rush Limbaugh or someone of that nature calls UpChuck out for his endless choo-choo train of lies and deceit.

Fuck him. He’s a horrible human being.

Rush Limbaugh is promoting Chuck - he’s not going to call Chuck out. People like Chuck are very useful to the right wing movement.

It’s heartening to see that the Kansas legislature can take time out from running their state into the ground to attempt to muzzle their critics. None of them seems to be willing to take the credit for this turd either. Those who voted for these shysters as well as those who failed to vote for their opponents (Assuming that the Democratic party bothered to run anyone) have much to be modest about.

The Roberts case against Andrew and Dersh is complicated, because right now it is based on one witness testimony, and witness testimonies are unreliable evidence, as we have discussed many times in the few last days. In fact, there is no guarantee that V.R.’s testimony is truthful even if she fully believes that it is 100% truthful - because of the false memory/misidentification issues (which are magnified n-fold when we’re talking about traumatic events). I understand how uncomfortable such a conclusion and its implications are, but these issues won’t go away just because we would like them to.

‘Laura Poitras claimed the award for outstanding directorial achievement in documentary for Citizenfour, her portrait of Edward Snowden and dissection of the surveillance state.”

So—a low ranking IT guy is celebrated as a hero by some when he stole millions of documents from the US govt and determined the world should see it—aided and abetted by his 2 or more co-conspirators along with Russia—and yet Poitras, who lives in Berlin, has the nerve to call the US “the surveillance state”?

The movie was never distributed widely, and hasn’t made $3M yet for one that Poitras said she made “covertly” and which was panned in a number of reviews. Was the movie just made for Snowden fanboys?

So, you’re so completely irrelevant Charles that Chuckles has to respond to you even after he blocked you. Yeah, you’re inside what passes for his brain pan.

He’s a sad strange little man.

So, Chuckles is going to take credit for Brian Williams and whatever fate befalls Williams of his own accord and that of the internal decisions of NBC News.

Right.

If I were delusional, I’d say Brian stepped down because I deemed it so. After all, I hashtagged fire Brian Williams. I called him out for violating the trust and for engaging in unethical conduct.

Unlike Chuckles, I’m not delusional and have no right to make any such claims. Mine was just one of many voices questioning his conduct and calling for accountability.

Since I’m on the subject of accountability, when will Rupert Murdoch call anyone at Fox News accountable for what they pass off at news? Year after year of obfuscation, lies, and smears, to say nothing of allowing voices like Chuckles to rise to the surface of a poisonous lake. When will the smear merchants be fired Rupert?

Description of Glenn Greenwald’s country of choice in the article,

In the flurry of blue and white that lit up Rio de Janeiro’s vast Sambadrome last week, black bands could be spotted on some of the wrists of those who marched to the driving beats….Yet homophobia is also entrenched in Brazil, with one gay, trans or bisexual person killed on average every 28 hours. Some of the online comments seemed to back this up, condemning the wristband homage and using derogatory homophobic slang such as bicha (animal) to describe Da Silva.

From Steve Novella at Neurologica Blog:

Of course, I have no idea what was in Williams’ mind, what he remembered, and if on some level he knew he was embellishing his own story. What is clear, however, is that it is very possible Williams remembered the version of the story he has recently been telling.
[…]
While I can’t know what is in his mind, given what we know about memory it is reasonable to give Williams the benefit of the doubt. It is absolutely possible, even likely, that it is his memory that has shifted over the years, in a fashion consistent with memory research.

Murphy’s ball!

Puppy break! Took the puppy out for a walk yesterday afternoon. Little wet from snow melt, so we stayed on the park drive most of the time. Leashes are required in city parks, so we’re going to have to find someplace where he can run a bit more and play fetch. This dog was amazingly well trained to be left in a shelter. I assume it was someone’s dog who died or got put in a hospice or he had too much energy for them. Just a shame, but glad we found him.

re: #83 Rev_Arthur_Icantbreatheing

Nice looking dog. When Banjo was a pup, I looked for a place to exercise him in a break in the rain while my wife was in a store. I threw the ball once onto a lawn in a little public square where we were. He went tearing across the grass kicking up mud and then tried to stop. Feet went out from under him and he slid another 20 feet on his back. When he came back with the ball he was covered in mud. I re-leashed him and returned to the store front and waited for my wife. When she came out and saw the mud-covered pup she said, “What the hell happened?” I looked down at the happy muddy dog and shrugged.

I’d just add to what OA said: The first steps to learning are actually pretty easy - learning what notes are where on the Fretboard, The major chords (and some minors), and then you’ll get to a point where you feel like you’re not progressing as quickly - KEEP PLAYING AND LEARNING! It’s a plateau that, with work, you will break through. I’d also recommend playing some songs you like with tablature every once in a while, just to remind you that this is supposed to be fun :)

It’s a Squier Vintage Modified Telecaster Special in Butterscotch Blond. A Telecaster/Jazzmaster hybrid, it should be fun to play.

That’s all, nothing important, I just wanted to show off a bit :D

Very nice, congrats! The Squier VMs are pretty nice guitars.

One thing I do to all my Teles - I pull the control plate and flip it around. It moves the pickup selector out of the way, because I always, always knock into it while playing. You have to also flip the volume and tone controls as well, but it cuts way down on unwelcome pickup changes. :)

Happy playing!

Suggestion: Get a good amp to go with it, one that has some amp modeling to change the tone. I’m amazed at how different I play when I’m in a distorted amp mode vs. when I’m in clean, and Tele’s are as clean as they come.

Also, I LOVE the maple neck. Will never go back to rosewood!

I take the Tele’s clean tone as a challenge. If you can play a solo on a clean Tele, you can play a solo on anything.

I have a friend in a famous metal band who’s got quite a few vintage Telecasters, but he admits that there’s a level of precision involved in playing a Tele that he can’t hit, so he plays Gibsons.

Has more to do with the material used to build the guitar. Single coils tend to hum, while dual coil because of the way they are wound cancel out the hum.

That said, I have some dual coils that have been wound to sound really gritty and some wound to be clean.

Normally the neck pickup is cleaner than the bridge pickup.

That has some to do with it. Also, all that metal tailpiece the bridge is mounted to brightens the sound a lot. Add in a thick solid body and everything adds up to a screamer.

Berlin outbreak blasts hopes of eradicating measles in Germany by 2015

There’s new pressure on parents to vaccinate their kids against measles as outbreaks spread in California and Berlin. Germany had wanted to eradicate measles by 2015. Some are blaming migrants and tourists.

Germany’s Robert Koch Institute (RKI) said the country faces its largest outbreak of measles since the introduction of an Infection Protection Act in 2001.

The RKI said there have been 375 cases of measles in Germany in the past four months. More than half of infected people are adults.

But in January, the RKI said the number of new cases rose rapidly by 254, with 82 of those cases reported in the fourth week of the month.

Health authorities said the outbreak was first detected in October among asylum seekers from Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Serbia.

They suggest this could be because vaccination programs failed during the Yugoslav civil war of the 1990s.

I’m glad his daughter has beaten the odds and lived as long as she has, and I don’t doubt that her parents and siblings truly love her. But giving Santorum positive coverage gives him reason to run for president again, and I can’t see the good that would come of that. Unless of course the DM simply wants to be able to cover the “more conservative than thou” ethos of the ‘cattle-show’ debates that will start later this year. Which brings me back to my point about clown car crashes, to which I might add circus train wrecks.

Please. Here’s what he wrote:

Of course, Americans will answer that James Cone and Jeremiah Wright rewriting Christianity for the benefit of their race is good, or at least understandable, while the Nazis doing the same thing was bad, even evil, but we need to recognize that the underlying theological sleight of hand is the same. Recasting Christianity to benefit your race or ethnic group, while highlighting others as hate figures who need to be expunged from the “true faith,” is unhealthy — traditional Christians would say sinful too — and ought to be resisted by all people who seek harmony and peace.

Why the fuck bring Nazis into this at all? Of course he compares Wright to the Nazis. Literally.

And while he whines about ahistoricity of the “black Jesus”, he has no time for criticism of the white Christians’ “rewriting” of Christianity with European Baby Jesus in the main role. For him it is somehow limited to the Nazis.

So, the wingnuts are outraged over American drone strikes on Islamic targets, but they are ecstatic over Jordan F16 airstrikes on Islamic targets. Am I missing anything?

It’s simple: King Abdullah II is a Sunni Muslim monarch, but he was Special Forces trained, so he’s a Real Man, and he’s not Obama. Again, the only rule in play with Dim Jim is: Blame Obama First.

The ‘Blame Obama First’ presentation of events is as dishonest and untrue as the ‘Blame America First’ presentation. Both are intended not to educate the reader but to agitate him or her and end up stirring up intense and irrational hatred.

Did you have any connection with the B Sharp music store on Central Avenue in NE Minneapolis? That was THE place to buy musical gear in the ‘60’s. I (well, my dad) bought a set of Roger’s drums at that store in 1968.

That’s helpful but still curious about the sound differences between guitars.

adding-I have a few favorites (Satriani, Vai, Buckethead) I listen to, but have little idea how much of that particular sound is guitar vs player vs setup, effects, amps etc. Then the acoustic side, I listen to Candyrat and obviously some of those are pretty exotic.

Heh. Memory problems:

A colonel took Johnson’s allocated seat on one bomber, and it was shot down with no survivors. Reports vary on what happened to the B-26 Marauder carrying Johnson. He said it was also attacked by Japanese fighters but survived, while others, including other members of the flight crew, claim it turned back because of generator trouble before reaching the objective and before encountering enemy aircraft and never came under fire; this is supported by official flight records.[25] Other airplanes that continued to the target did come under fire near the target at about the same time that Johnson’s plane was recorded as having landed back at the original airbase. MacArthur awarded Johnson the Silver Star, the military’s third-highest medal.[25]

Here’s one I think the group will find interesting:

The Alternative aka Gun Condom

Alternative Ballistics has developed a less than lethal option for law enforcement. It acts like a condom for the gun. The “Alternative” is placed over the muzzle end of the slide. It holds onto an alloy metal ball. When the first round is fired, the bullet is captured by the metal ball and the force releases the ball from the slide attachment. It is propelled forward to the shooter’s target. Once fired, the docking device automatically ejects from the slide allowing the next followup shot to be lethal if needed. By increasing the size and mass of the projectile, it supposedly does not penetrate and is not lethal. I am sure there will be instances where it could cause damage or even death. Even rubber bullets have been scrutinized and in some cases have caused death.

Here is a diagram showing the unit on a M&P. Other than the potential hazard of installing the device, the Alternative does seem rather well thought out in terms of the user operating their firearm. Consideration for weapon mounted lights and a channel for the front sight does not alter how one uses his or her firearm.

Well, I suppose that’s one solution you could market to gun fuckers…

Oh! Well, that is real tough. There is so much that can change a guitar sound. And much of that has nothing to do with the guitar. You have all kinds of modification of sound with all the pedals and effects processors, and then you have a lot you can change on the amps.

The amp in my picture is a modeling amp (Vox VT-100 - Valvetronic) which means there is a computer chip in it that is set to model many different types of classic amplifiers. A few flips of the switches and I can have a completely different sound.

About the only way you could find out how a guitarist got a particular sound would be to ask them, or if you are lucky you can find a YouTube video of then or their roadie/guitar tech explaining it.

Such as this: Johnny Marr talks about his BOSS sound processor.

Eh, don’t bet on it - it generally takes a LONG time for new tech to be distributed among the units once out of testing and approval - most still serve with weapons that border on prehistoric as far as I’m concerned, with the exception of the elite units.

That’s a policy—older weapons end their useful lives deeper and deeper in the reserve units. They were still running M3 half-tracks and C47s in 2000.

For a couple years I was stationed with a US DoD logistics team, on loan from Army. Since then, IMI has somewhat privatized and renamed itself “Israeli Weapons Industries”. You still see the old name around.

Yes and no, actually - IWI was formed from just the company’s Small Arms division back in 2005. Since then, IMI and IWI are essentially separate companies and former is still its own thing - the bulk of the full current privatization planned for IMI is still unfolding, ever so slowly (I’ll probably have great grandchildren by the time it concludes - and I’m single now)…

re: #118 SteveMcGaziBolaGate

I always wondered about that. I assumed I didn’t have a sophisticated ear, but I always felt that Fenders sounded cleaner than Gibsons. Is that because of the single coil pickup vs the dual coils?

Pretty much, yeah. Gibsons can be cranked more through high-gain amps because of the Humbucking pickups, while Fenders tend to buzz quite a bit (although I’ll still play Fenders with a lot of gain from time to time).

Ironically, the Humbuckers were developed to emulate the sound of Gibson’s P-90 pickup, which is a single coil. I personally love P-90s and will live with the buzz because they sound so good.

I use a Vox Tonelab (first generation) for my modeling. I have four Line 6 units (I loved them early on but dislike them more with every release), but the Vox sounds closer to ‘real’ because it’s got a 12AX7 preamp tube in the circuit.

I send the Tonelab through an amp called an Atomic Reactor - a 50 watt tube amp with no controls except a master volume. The Reactor was built to be tonally ‘transparent,’ with no tone circuits that could change the sound of whatever modeling rig you put through it.

Woth the Tonelab and the Reactor, I get the best of both worlds - it’s easy to dial in different amp models, but I still get the ‘push’ from an actual tube amp on the output side. Most modeling rigs haven’t really figured that part out yet.

Video

That guy completely missed two things in regard to Hendrix -

First, he played left handed on a guitar strung right handed. As a result, all of his bends and the way he played blues was completely different from how a right handed player would do it, and it sounded different.

Second - he missed Curtis Mayfield and a host of R&B rhythm players and their influence on Hendrix’ sound. Listen to Mayfield’s rhythm work on his hit ‘Gypsy Woman’ - there’s an awful lot of Hendrix in there.

Also - Hendrix’ hands were enormous, which gave him strength and reach that most guitar players don’t have. It makes a huge difference when you’re trying to play a lot of his stuff.

I agree with all your points. Especially JImi’s hands. He sometimes did funky barre chords with his thumb while doing notes with his fingers.

Did you ever see ” A film about Jimi Hendrix?” The original documentary done on Hendrix in 1973? There is some footage in there that really shows how physical he was with his guitar. And somehow also keeping it relatively in tune, though he bent his notes into tune too.

And that gets to what is the beauty of the guitar. No two players are ever the same. The individual touch comes out no matter.

And that video I put up you have commented on isn’t perfect, but it gets to what Great White Snark was wanting to know…what makes individuals sound different. What you are adding to some of the points that guy was making lends more to what makes guitarists sound different.

It might be in that Hendrix film, or something I read somewhere one time, but at a Hendrix gig, a couple well known guitarists went to the sound guy after the show and asked to check out Jimi’s gear. Supposedly the tech let them turn it all on and and all of it sounded like crap in their hands. They didn’t like the distortion from his fuzz, they didn’t like the feedback they were getting. They were not Jimi.

re: #218 ObserverArt

I remember an interview with Stevie Ray once where he said he had a dream where Jimi was teaching him a bunch of stuff, solos and the like, and then he woke up and couldn’t play any of it for shit. That about sums up Jimi. :D

220 makeitstop  Feb 8, 2015 1:37:44pm

Hendrix was my first great role model for guitar. My first really good guitar was a ‘65 Strat, and I used to sit with ‘Are You Experienced’ and ‘Axis’ on my record player, just playing the songs over and over in hopes I’d be able to pick up what the hell he was doing.

I eventually figured a lot of it out. But there are still songs, nearly 50 years after the fact, that I still haven’t figured out. I can hear what he’s doing, but I’ll be damned if I can translate it to my fingers.
