Rush Limbaugh is pretty much going wall-to-wall with this story. Ok, I guess if I were him I wouldn’t want to talk about the first month performance of the GOP majorities or the clown car filling up ahead of the presidential primaries either.

A part of the Brian Williams gaffe that I think needs more emphasis.

A journalist, newscaster, or any other news-related professional, like panelists and pundits sell verisimilitude. They are playing a part that has the same name as the performer, the same backstory as the performer: the performance is to sound authentic. They perform honesty, which is not the same thing as actually telling the truth.

The response from the media is intense—and hypocritical—because they need that uncritical acceptance of their presentation as reliable. It’s their cultural capitol. It keeps them on the air.

Wingnuts are labeling Williams a liberal, and inflating this story bigger and bigger, precisely because they’re the emperor with no clothes. Their stories don’t hold up. Their pundits lie. They need to divert attention, they need scapegoats.

Williams is the scapegoat for the media’s shameful performance in the run up to the war in Iraq. It seems that this same media is not so chastened, though, that it will seriously question the GOP’s goals, motives, tactics or even any of its baldfaced lies.

Memory is not a video tape recorder. With time our memories change, and many things that we think we remember clearly, we probably don’t; most of us just don’t have 10 year old videos or detailed logs floating around to prove us wrong.

There are many studies that show how easy it is to manipulate memories and how fallible our memories are.

We also tend to personalize stories that we’ve seen others do:
pss.sagepub.com

The shocking thing is that we as a society continue believing that memory is reliable and placing a high value on eye witness testimony and personal anecdotes.

This shit is more sinister than “outrage.”

This is stab-in-the-back myth territory. It’s been building: accusations of being Muslim, being a terrorist sympathizer, being an antisemite.

No joking, it’s a trend that has me worried. Even if the specific statements are by cynics and opportunists getting paid by the click and the soundbite, the cumulative effect is getting more and more toxic. These kinds of moral panics hurt people and cost lives. State sponsored moral panics—fear of infiltrators and “wreckers”—have wracked up enormous body counts.

Peak wingnut is the moment when this stuff stops being “unreal” and thus kind of funny, and instead becomes “real” because it starts affecting our safety. The bigger the lies are allowed to inflate, the bigger the chance people aren’t coming out unscathed.

Excavate the “support Israel” wingnuts’ sources and you find an ongoing trend of:

(1) perpetuating the stereotype of the dangerous leftist/Marxist Jew, with all the attendant antisemitic caricature…which also manifests in the tendency for “Israel” to be synonymous with “the really conservative parties in Israeli politcs” and any other politics to be deemed radical and dangerous.

(2) A thorough policing of who the “real” Israelis are, which excludes all liberalism and all positions contrary to American culture war positions held by wingnuts. See in its most extreme form here.

The crazy thing about it is that it’s all in what they expect to hear. Obama could read a GWB speech verbatim, and they’d see it as evidence of his committment to radical Islam.

We really are in ‘Through The Looking Glass’ territory, where there’s another reality. This week they all LOVE King Abdullah and think he’s so much better a leader than Obama, who is apparently not doing ANYTHING about ISIS. But who ORGANIZED the coalition that’s bombing ISIS, and who commands the forces flying most of the missions?

I’ve never had the fortitude to do it, but you can line up all the Rapture-ready guys that our Congress panders to and get a very interesting picture of what they think of Israel.

Y’know, the more I read about antisemitism, white supremacists, right-wing Christianists, and groups like Daesh & Boko Haram, the more similarities I see. There are patterns in their tactics, strategies and goals, the only difference being a lack of violence (for the most part) with right-wing Christianists. WRT religion, none of them are really following their respective faiths in a way that’s recognizable to the average moderate believer—they hide their thuggery behind religious talk. It creeps me right the hell out.

Example: I don’t typically read VICE News, but the following article about Boko Haram came in via my Google Alerts today and it caught my eye:

Two months earlier, hundreds of Boko Haram fighters had entered Mubi, driving through the town, taking what they wanted from shops and market stalls and forcing their way into the people’s homes. Abdullahi Umar, senior bodyguard to the local emir, could only watch as they took over the ruler’s palace and set up shop. Every Friday they preached the importance of being good Muslims from the central mosque. But the militants, some of them rugged fighters from neighboring Chad, would drink beer, smoke and stare at the local women, according to accounts from the town. Some of them were later forced to marry the fighters. […]

Fox just used some expert from Heritage as a counterpoint to Obama on climate change. Isn’t that lovely.

93 Kid A  Feb 10, 2015 3:28:02pm
MATTHEW YGLESIAS, VOX: Do you think the media sometimes overstates the level of alarm people should have about terrorism and this kind of chaos, as opposed to a longer-term problem of climate change and epidemic disease?

PRESIDENT OBAMA: Absolutely. And I don’t blame the media for that. What’s the famous saying about local newscasts, right? If it bleeds, it leads, right? You show crime stories and you show fires, because that’s what folks watch, and it’s all about ratings. And, you know, the problems of terrorism and dysfunction and chaos, along with plane crashes and a few other things, that’s the equivalent when it comes to covering international affairs. There’s just not going to be a lot of interest in a headline story that we have cut infant mortality by really significant amounts over the last 20 years or that extreme poverty has been slashed or that there’s been enormous progress with a program we set up when I first came into office to help poor farmers increase productivity and yields. It’s not a sexy story. And climate change is one that is happening at such a broad scale and at such a complex system, it’s a hard story for the media to tell on a day-to-day basis.

There is nothing wrong about what Obama said here.

Also part of the Hatton W. Sumners Foundation.

Meet Hatton W. Sumners:

Early in his career, he spoke out against the Dyer Anti-Lynching Bill, claiming that the bill’s sponsors did not have adequate statistics to prove their case, that the bill would increase racial mob violence, and that the bill ultimately impinged on states’ rights.[3]

Speaking on the House floor while some African-Americans watched from the balcony, Sumners continued to attack the Dyer Anti-Lynching Bill with racist tropes. “Only a short time ago… their ancestors roamed the jungles of Africa in absolute savagery…[Y]ou do not know where the beast is among them. Somewhere in that black mass of people is the man who would outrage your wife or your child, and every man who lives in the country knows it.” [4] [5]

Sumners served on the Judiciary Committee of the House of Representatives and was appointed regularly to investigate allegations of corruption among federal judges, serving on the impeachment committees for three federal judges.[6] Sumners became Chairman of the Judiciary Committee in 1932,[2] and as a loyal Democrat supported much of President Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal legislation. However, when the Supreme Court began invalidating key parts of the New Deal, Roosevelt proposed a plan to expand the Court, his so-called Court-packing plan was announced in 1936. As Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, Sumners discreetly worked in opposition, but as the plan was clearly in trouble, Sumners reportedly said, “Boys, here’s where I cash in my chips,” referring to his waning support for the President.[2] Ultimately, Chairman Sumners came out formally against the Court-packing plan. As a consequence of this, he faced two serious opponents in the 1938 election, but Sumners was re-elected and was not seriously challenged again. In 1946, Sumners announced he would not seek re-election.

I missed the timeout on the broken link above (net gain: decent frozen pizza, italian chacuterie to further bling out said pizza):

Modern Day Israel Has Forgotten Her Creator

While Now The End Begins is the deep end of the crazy prophecy pool, its sentiments about Israel—and go ahead and look at the Israel section and read the comments because fucking what—are perfectly in line with what John Hagee, Tim LaHaye, and basically every dispensationalist pastor communicates.

We should all be mightily pissed when any politician sucks up to these people. It should not be even minimally acceptable.

It’s always been my understanding that “modern-day Israel” was created by a bunch of collectivist, socialist, primarily eastern European, largely secular Jews.

Was I not paying enough attention in Hebrew school all those years ago?

Theirs is an Imagined Israel for which Actual Israel is an inconvenience.

He’s got enough money to survive the suspension, don’t worry about that. And Williams is damn lucky he will still have some kind of job come August. NBC could easily have punted him.

Because NBC has ethics, unlike the other networks.

Brian Williams? All this time I thought everybody was talking about
Chuck Scarborough. Sue Simmons carried him, man, she carried him!

re: #220 Dark_Falcon

That’s true for the USA, Russia, France, Mexico, any nation with a national myths.

This is a US-based sectarian Christian myth that requires Israel to not only exist, but to be in a constant state of conflict and expansion up until the Third Temple is built, and then experience an even larger conflict versus rest of the world controlled by the Beast, and then finally for the unconverted remainder to be thrown into eternal fire by God.

Oh, and I forgot the part where all the Jews have to return to Israel to start the Apocalypse, because God is gave them a subtle, Hitler-shaped hint.

National mythologies contain some insane shit, but goal-tending a completely different nation *and* an entire ethnic group *and* a religion, so that they can suffer, die, and get sent to hell according to the right timetable to ensure maximum chuckle-value amongst the Christian “saved” is pretty fucking unique.

It’s not okay that this is any part of our politics. It is really, really not okay that we have politics genuflecting to the purveyors of this, that we have politicians echoing prophecy and apocalypse from their government seats. Built into this myth is an acceptance—even an eagerness for—massive amounts of death and chaos. Know what isn’t built into this mental framework? Long-term planning for the health, happiness, and safety of American citizens. Since the only thing that matters is the fate of souls—saved versus hellbound—every single living person is an acceptable loss.

It’s myths for those who are all Rah Rah Team!
Not for people who actually think for themselves.
