“Only a short time ago… their [black] ancestors roamed the jungles of Africa in absolute savagery…[Y]ou do not know where the beast is among them. Somewhere in that black mass of people is the man who would outrage your wife or your child, and every man who lives in the country knows it.”
— Congressman Hatton W. Sumners

The Event:

Hatton W. Sumners Distinguished Lecture Series with Glenn Greenwald

WHEN: Friday, April 3, 2015
Luncheon 12:00PM - 1:30PM

WHERE: Omni Mandalay Hotel
221 East Las Colinas Boulevard
Irving, TX 75039

The Organization:

Allen B. West Allen West, President & CEO

National Center for Policy Analysis CEO Allen West is a Fox News Contributor, a Senior Fellow at the London Center for Policy Research, and the author of Guardian of the Republic.

NCPA Funding:

The Koch Brothers

The National Center for Policy Analysis (NCPA) is a free market think tank primarily funded by private foundations established by wealthy conservative business families and billionaires, including Charles and David Koch. It is a “communications and research foundation dedicated to providing free market solutions to today’s public policy problems … [and] prides itself on aggressively marketing its products for maximum impact by ‘targeting key political leaders and special interest groups, establishing on-going ties with members of the print and electronic media, and testifying before Congress, federal agencies, state lawmakers, and national organizations.’” — NCRP, The Strategic Philanthropy of Conservative Foundations[1]It develops and promotes private, free-market alternatives to government regulation and control, and encourages reliance on the private sector.

About Hatton W. Sumners:

Early in his career, he spoke out against the Dyer Anti-Lynching Bill, claiming that the bill’s sponsors did not have adequate statistics to prove their case, that the bill would increase racial mob violence, and that the bill ultimately impinged on states’ rights.

Speaking on the House floor while some African-Americans watched from the balcony, Sumners continued to attack the Dyer Anti-Lynching Bill with racist tropes. “Only a short time ago… their ancestors roamed the jungles of Africa in absolute savagery…[Y]ou do not know where the beast is among them. Somewhere in that black mass of people is the man who would outrage your wife or your child, and every man who lives in the country knows it.”

Further on Hatton W. Sumners:

Hatton W. Sumners of Texas opposed anti-lynching laws during his 17 terms in the House of Representatives, arguing that the individual states could handle the problem of mob violence against African Americans.

Southern Democrats rebuffed the measure, mustering familiar practical and constitutional defenses. Hatton W. Sumners of Texas, a Dallas attorney who later served 16 years as chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, led the defense. In two lengthy debates, Sumners compared the bill to an act of legislative “mob” violence and suggested Congress let southern states resolve the lynching issue on their own. “I say to you that you cannot pass this bill unless you pass it under the influence of the same spirit which this bill denounces, viz., the mob spirit,” Sumners said to laughter and applause on the House Floor. “You say that the folks down in the South are not doing this thing fast enough, and the folks in the South say the officers are not doing this thing fast enough, and you each get ropes and they go after the criminal and you go after the Constitution.”

Where have we heard that before, and since?

There’s truth in that, but in one very important way Kanye is smarter than Jimi Hendrix was: He doesn’t use drugs. As a result he’ll likely live far longer than Hendrix did.

Trite I know, but after Whitney Houston’s daughter’s having OD’d I feel it needs saying. If you need to get high, stick to Mary Jane. It’s a lot less likely to kill you.

“Glenn Greenwald Will Speak to a Koch-Funded Group Named After a Pro-Lynching Racist Dixiecrat Congressman”

One bit of pedantry: the lecture is sponsored by the Sumners foundation, so it’s fair to say he will be speaking before that group too, but NCPA should not be conflated with that foundation. I think we mean NCPA when we say “Koch-funded” (though I wouldn’t be surprised if HWSF is also Koch-funded).

re: #64 Gus

Oh. NCPA is funded by Koch. Don’t know who funds Hatton W. Sumners Foundation.

Here’s there stated purpose. Looks weird.

The purpose of the Hatton W. Sumners Foundation, as stated in its governing documents, is to encourage the study, teaching and research into the science and art of self-government, to the end that the American People may understand the fundamental principles of democracy and be guided thereby in shaping governmental policies.

To that end, the Hatton W. Sumners Foundation supports programs and activities that will result in an increased understanding by the public of the benefits of individual freedom and civic and personal responsibility, and the corresponding threat to liberty posed by a lack of informed, active participation by citizens at all levels of government.

Right-wing think-tank is a contradiction in terms.

It’s “think” tank.

Not “Carefully considered, scrupulously honest, empirical, unbiased, not-an-orgy-of-fallacies, intellectual-simony free” tank.

re: #66 Gus

Here’s there stated purpose. Looks weird.

The purpose of the Hatton W. Sumners Foundation, as stated in its governing documents, is to encourage the study, teaching and research into the science and art of self-government, to the end that the American People may understand the fundamental principles of democracy and be guided thereby in shaping governmental policies.

That bit reads to me like it gives license to some of the document Prof. Backpfeifengesicht, PhD put up in #54.

They say lynching is an American institution. Well, it is to a degree. Except in a narrow strip of country along the eastern seaboard, the pioneer preceeded organized government and homemade law preceeded organized law all the way to the Pacific coast. In the western part of my State it was the rugged pioneer who could ride as hard and shoot as straight as the bad man could, who drove the desperado beyond the Rio Grande and established respect for the law of the people and made life safe in that country.

It is as if they are saying good old frontier law is at the heart of today’s laws and we may need to study those old ways because we are going to maybe need them when we decide this government no longer works. Take the law into your own hands as it were.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark.(KTHV) - Counting out change to a customer seems to be a lost art these days, but if one lawmaker has his way, every student in Arkansas would be required to preserve this dying skill.

Most cash registers in use today automatically calculate how much change is due. Much different than a decade ago.

“Do we not work with these youngsters enough to learn how to make correct change?”

Representative Kim Hendren says the idea for a bill that would require this simple math skill to be taught in school came after a recent conversation.

“An operator of a sale barn in northwest Arkansas told me, my wife and I went to Sonic the other night bought two drinks for just over three dollars and when the attendant came out I handed a 20 dollar bill to the attendant. The attendant looked so puzzled, hesitated back and then gave him back $21 in change.”

That and people try really goddamned hard to forget that when it’s their baby or grandchild, and they’re around other parents. They suppress their feelings & desperately try not to say the unspeakable truth, that babies are horrible, greedy little shit monsters made of mostly refined id.

Study: Babies Like Watching Puppets Who Are Different From Them Get Hurt

How awful is that? People want to think babies are all sweet ‘n shit, but that actually makes no sense. They’re totally uncivilized raw humanity, that haven’t developed any of the learning, grace or higher order thinking we all tend to take for granted.

I mean yeah, they’re kind of necessary, I get that. But I think Vigeland pretty much captured how we all, deep down, tend to feel about them … at least sometimes.

Mix that up with enough narcissism to never admit when he is wrong and the grandiosity to think everyone should follow him no matter what he does, and the Right finally realized that he was certifiably dangerous to their own cause.

Study Reveals Babies Are Stupid

LOS ANGELES—A surprising new study released Monday by UCLA’s Institute For Child Development revealed that human babies, long thought by psychologists to be highly inquisitive and adaptable, are actually extraordinarily stupid.

The study, an 18-month battery of intelligence tests administered to over 3,500 babies, concluded categorically that babies are “so stupid, it’s not even funny.”

According to Institute president Molly Bentley, in an effort to determine infant survival instincts when attacked, the babies were prodded in an aggressive manner with a broken broom handle. Over 90 percent of them, when poked, failed to make even rudimentary attempts to defend themselves. The remaining 10 percent responded by vacating their bowels.

“It is unlikely that the presence of the babies’ fecal matter, however foul-smelling, would have a measurable defensive effect against an attacker in a real-world situation,” Bentley said.

The probe into NY Speaker Sheldon Silver continues. Using upstate FBI detectives, Manhattan US Attorney Preet Bharara is investigating possible voter fraud.

The impetus for the probe could have been information provided to Bharara by opponents of Diaz, one of whom I spoke with last week. Included in the material was evidence of alleged voter fraud — particularly alleged fake signatures on voter petitions.
I’m hearing that one document turned over to Bharara shows that some candidates in certain Bronx districts got more votes than the number of voters who went into the booths.

When they were committed for atheistic reasons. For example, if under Lenin or Stalin a believer was shot or sent to GULAG just for being a believer (this did not automatically happen to all believers, but that’s not the point), this was a consequence of the terrorist state being atheistic (at least in the sense in which the Soviets understood atheism; they had their own brand, “scientific atheism”, which was a mix of atheism, science, anti-clericalism, Marxism etc.; formally speaking, an atheist need not be anti-religious at all, but the Soviet atheism was more than mere lack of belief in God).

Hate crimes take all shapes and forms. Today’s mass killing of three Muslim students near UNC Chapel Hill is one such incident. The identity of the victims is clear, and it is also clear that they were killed because they were Muslim.

We’re now learning about the identity of the shooter, and his motivations.

He sought to kill these Muslim students. And these three people who wanted to do good for their communities:

Barakat and Abu-Salha were married Dec. 27. Abu-Salha’s Facebook photo - posted two days ago - shows her smiling as her father twirls her around the wedding dance floor.

She was scheduled to graduate in December with a degree in biological sciences from NCSU, according to a university release, and she graduated in 2011 from Athens Drive High School in Raleigh. Her sister Razan Abu-Salha graduated from Athens Drive in 2013 and was studying architecture and environmental design at NCSU.

Barakat, a Syrian-American, majored in business administration and management at NCSU before enrolling at UNC-Chapel Hill in 2013 to pursue his doctorate in dental surgery.

Both he and Abu-Salha advocated for global dental health, providing care and supplies to people in the United States and the Middle East. On Jan. 29, Barakat posted a Facebook photo of a Durham project that gave dental supplies and food to more than 75 homeless people this year.

That the shooter was an atheist is unusual but rather besides the point. His motivations are quite similar to those of others who kill or espouse violence towards Muslims (or other minorities), including many so-called Christians who have no issue killing (or calling for the killing) of non-Christians.

Interesting too that he targeted three Muslims, and not three fundamentalist Christians, who are far more prevalent in North Carolina. His targeting of three Muslims may also stem from a possible altercation over a parking spot (as some reports are alluding to).

In the end, he still killed three people, and a community grieves over a senseless murder spree.

That this is yet another mass killing involving firearms, and that the shooter was apparently a good guy with a gun right up until he murdered three people is going to be lost on many who who focus instead on the atheist leanings of the shooter as indicative of a left-leaning ideology (as if there aren’t right wing examples of atheists?!)

I’m also sure that Chuckles will be digging into the backgrounds of the victims to find justifications for their being killed. Because that’s what Chuckles does.

Yup. The President is now putting the onus on the GOP in Congress to do something that they’ve refused to do for the past 6+ years. Govern/legislate and do their constitutional obligations.

The President wants an AUMF. He’s calling on the GOP to formulate one. Much hilarity will ensue because it clearly shows that the President is more than willing to go to war against ISIL, but wants to see what the GOP is actually willing to do.

My guess? The GOP will claim that this is the President abdicating his responsibility to protect the nation from this ongoing threat. That it’s a sign of weakness (because the GOP is all about the pivot - whatever the president is for, the GOP is reflexively against, even if they were calling for action moments before).

Many of us are also still under the illusion that we are the “consumers” and that news is their “product”.

When in fact, the product they sell is advertising time, and their customers are the potential advertisers. News and programming are there simply to attract more viewers/listeners and increase the value of their product.

And whatever attracts the desired audience determines what they will broadcast.

re: #453 lawhawk

Atheist ≠ anti-theist.

I don’t even know what an “anti-theist” is. Every anti-theist defines it differently.

I’ve seen it used to denote:
1. People who are against God under any circumstances (i.e. even if they’re not atheists and believe in God, they’re still against him because they think he’s evil, etc.).
2. People who are against all believers in God (theists).
3. People who are against specifically theism.

Finally, it is sometimes used to denote very militant atheists.

Indication that a single-axis definition is not very accurate. Probably need to cross it with another axis indicating level of asshole-ness or tendency to solve issues via threats and violence.

More specifically, PZ Meyers and Rebecca Watson are the most outspoken proponents of atheism+, the attempt to construct a secular, inclusive moral movement that specifically rejects things that the atheist community has had issues with in the last few years: sexism and Islamophobic fearmongering.

The people throwing stuff specifically at them—Roosh, Cernovich, etc—are all sexists of the MRA/PUA/Gamergate clade: not content to merely be sexist, but formulating a worldview in which sexism is natural, and feminism is Cultural Marxist conspiracy to disrupt the natural order. They see an opportunity to smear their opponent and they’re taking it.

Is it just me, or is Roosh like every bad stereotype of a Persian male come to life?

I’m not aware of Persian stereotypes and don’t want to learn.

I think Wendell’s being sarcastic. Meyers is an avowed pacifist.

we just assume that godless atheists want to kill all true believers.

Our Jewish neighbor came by and wished us a “Happy Ramadan”

Typical crafty Zionists: they just want those Muslims to stare at that fruit basket all day with their mouths watering.

About the Hatton W. Sumners Distinguished Lecture Series

Who is Hatton W. Sumners?

A man of great moral courage and a sincere and deep spiritual conviction, Congressman Sumners was no ordinary public servant. […] It was common knowledge that he was in line for the next appointment to the Supreme Court until his deeply-rooted beliefs in the Constitution and the separation of powers caused him to lead the successful opposition to President Roosevelt’s plan to pack the Supreme Court in 1937.

Although best known for his role in the court fight, Congressman Summers’ enduring legacy is found in his life-long belief in the threat to liberty posed by a too powerful Washington bureaucracy, and in the critical importance to American constitutional government of an informed citizenry that actively participates in the affairs of State.
