Three Muslims Shot Dead Near University of North Carolina - Update: Caused by Parking Dispute?

US News • Views: 24,688

This is horrible - the victims seem like they were all just really good people. The suspected shooter’s facebook page has a lot of anti-religion postings, and he describes himself as an anti-theist. See the update tweet below, it appears that this could boil down to a parking dispute, or perhaps that plus bias, something we will likely never get to the bottom of.

A suspected gunman has been charged with the triple murder of three Muslim family members near a university campus in North Carolina, officials said early Wednesday.

Craig Stephen Hicks, 46, shot dead a second-year dentistry student, his wife, and her sister in an apartment complex near the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, local police said.

Police did not release any information about the possible motive for the alleged crime.

Deah Barakat, 23, his wife Yusor Mohammad, 21, and her sister Razan Mohammad, 19, were found dead at the scene by officers who responded to reports of gunfire just after 5:00 p.m. Tuesday in the town 20 miles northwest of Raleigh. The Charlotte Observer reported that all three victims were Muslim.

UPDATE at 2/11/15 7:02:40 am by Thanos

After all is said and done it could just be road rage:

…and if you view the replies at that tweet and at twitter in general you can see that social media is full of people trying to use this horrific event to bolster their limited and somewhat pathetic worldviews and conspiracy mindsets.

Meanwhile the family of the victims does think there is more to it, and it sure wouldn’t hurt to investigate if there are hate motives involved.

And I’d like to give a big “Fuck You” to the atheist/anti-theist community on the internet that helped make this horror possible (of course, not all atheists…).

Its really been coming for a long time, the atheist “community” has at least as bad a problem with Islamophobia as the shrieking harpy and her merry band of psychopaths. And…the atheist community didn’t fucking listen…they were too busy congratulating themselves on how rational and intelligent they were because they didn’t believe in a god.

There is not one “Atheist Community” Just like there is not just one “Catholic Community’ or one “Muslim Community”. There are plenty of bigoted Atheists, of course.

Sounds like this guy was a nutjob anti-theist. That’s different from an atheist. All the atheists I know don’t particularly care what anyone else believes as long as they don’t infringe on anyone else’s rights.

Thing is, Jay, judging at least from his FB, this guy was not a typical member of the anti-Muslim bigot brigade, which certainly has its share of asshole atheists. If you look at his FB, you will see more general anti-religion/anti-Christianity memes, but no specific anti-Muslim postings. He even “liked” Obama’s speech supporting Park51 (“Ground Zero Mosque”) and complained about Christian hypocrisy in this case.

Be specific or stfu because you are doing what the bigots do when you slam an entire community/class/type/race/gender/religion instead of naming names or the specific subset you are referencing.

(I’ll admit I was going off my initial reaction on this…which does not include visiting his FB or reading anything beyond what was posted here, and the following reply was composed before I read other comments)

The loudest and most influential part of the atheist “community” is, by my perception, exactly that. Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins for example, and they’re the ones that end up on TV when they’re looking for an atheist…they just happen to spread a bit of Islamophobia along with it.

I am an atheist and most atheists aren’t like that, true. And yes, its not one “community”, that’s why I used the quotation marks. But the community they are part of doesn’t call them out on that, and their portion of the atheist community is far too large and far too public. That’s one of several reasons I no longer associate with many atheists (along with rampant dudebroism)

After reading other comments…my comments in general about atheism/anti-theism remain. However, it seems they may not apply in this case.

Do you distinguish between atheists and anti-theists?

13 b_sharp  Feb 11, 2015 6:49:44am

Oh, oh. Here we go.

I’m afraid this is stark evidence that even people who pride themselves on their rational thought can harbor lunatics and idiots among their ranks. There is a lot of anti-Muslim sentiment among atheists, especially among the right leaning and Dawkins’ crowd. I’ve not heard anyone there suggest any theists should be killed, but it isn’t hard to imagine a borderline personality taking the anger and outright hate displayed by many atheists toward religion too literally and acting it out.

The vast majority of atheists profess to hating the religion but not the theist, but when that’s mixed with the repeated portrayal of Muslims as misogynistic, violent pedophiles it becomes just a chaotic, hateful, bitter soup.

It’s time we atheists, and anti-theists, reigned in the bullshit and started treating Muslims as humans.

re: #12 wrenchwench

Do you distinguish between atheists and anti-theists?

I don’t.

An atheist is a larger group that contains anti-theists. I was an anti-theist for many years and have only tempered my attitude since being among the people here. An anti-theist at her core isn’t any different than any other atheists except she believes all religions, but not the religious, should be wiped out. I repeat - the religion, but the not the people who practice the religion, should be wiped out. This does not in any way mean that people should be physically harmed.

As an atheist I can see that religion can give people comfort when they need it, so I’m not as adamant that it disappear as I used to be. I would still prefer that religions go the way of the dinosaur, as all magical thinking should, but I’m not going to spew anger at any theist except those trying to push religion into politics and schools. Even then I would never suggest anything physical should be done about it.

It’s not about hate, it’s about education and appropriate laws and conventions.

To me, an anti-theist is an evangelical atheist. I’m not evangelical, but I am an atheist.

It’s such a murky term. I’ve seen it used to denote:
1. People who are against God under any circumstances (i.e. even if they’re not atheists and believe in God, they’re still against him because they think he’s evil, etc.).
2. People who are against all believers in God (theists).
3. People who are against specifically theism.

re: #12 wrenchwench

I do try to differentiate. Atheists I have a reasonable chance of getting along with, anti-theists I have very little chance of getting along with.

Anti-theists, by my standards, seem to operate on the same thought process as the more…irritating types of religious people. They’ve decided that their way is the One True Way and the believers are “heretics”…the irony is lost upon the anti-theist.

Of course, when I see “Muslims shot by self-described anti-theist”, my initial reaction is to jump to a conclusion (I don’t think it was entirely unreasonable based on what I’d read up to that point and given previous experiences, but still, I did jump to a conclusion).

If this guy was known to be a raging anti-Muslim nut, OK, that would fit with “the bigoted media are trying to…”. So far his public pronouncements fit with the alleged police version. Which is not to say that religion didn’t play any role, while it also possibly being about the parking lot. It’s too early to draw any definite conclusions. Including conclusions about media narratives. IMHO.

I believe in humility.

That means while I may not agree with another’s faith, I believe people’s beliefs should be respected (with the exception of those who want to push their beliefs on others or force others to follow their beliefs). It’s incredibly arrogant to assume one has the only “truth” and that everyone else is wrong.

The idea of killing another person because they have different beliefs is simply evil. Period. It’s the ultimate display of hubris.

Was religion a factor in these killings? I don’t have any idea. The only thing I’m sure of is that the deaths are a terrible tragedy. Those who try to politicize this for their own purposes are just scumbags.

If it were about “random folks” (c) of the same faith, this would actually tend to confirm the explicit anti-Muslim angle, because a random shooter doesn’t seek out specifically Muslims unless he has an anti-Muslim motive.

But once we learn that they were neighbors and already had had conflicts before, there’s another dimension there, that may include both religious and purely domestic/mental issues.

All of the victims were Americans. Deah Barakat was a Syrian-American and the 2 sisters were Jordanian-Americans.

“But the women’s father, Dr. Mohammad Abu-Salha, who has a psychiatry practice in Clayton, said regardless of the precise trigger Tuesday night, Hicks’ underlying animosity toward Barakat and Abu-Salha was based on their religion and culture. Abu-Salha said police told him Hicks shot the three inside their apartment.

“It was execution style, a bullet in every head,” Abu-Salha said Wednesday morning. “This was not a dispute over a parking space; this was a hate crime. This man had picked on my daughter and her husband a couple of times before, and he talked with them with his gun in his belt. And they were uncomfortable with him, but they did not know he would go this far.”

“Abu-Salha said his daughter who lived next door to Hicks wore a Muslim head scarf and told her family a week ago that she had “a hateful neighbor.”

Since when does a dispute over a parking spot turn into an execution-style murder? Much more frequently than anyone should expect, as it turns out.

For instance, from a few weeks ago in Baltimore.

In Atlanta, guy was killed after being shot in the back. Twice.

But even more incidents where there were shootings over parking that weren’t execution style. See NJ, Chicago, Florida, etc.

The key similarity between all the incidents? The use of firearms to “solve” the situation.

And in the context of the NYT article yesterday with the lynching map (and the related article that didn’t indicate that all the perpetrators of the lynchings on that map were white Southerners), there were blacks lynched for nothing more than looking at, or associating with, a white woman.

Looking at a white woman could be a death sentence for a black.

I don’t know if anyone mentioned it (I’m behind in this thread)…but if you look at the top of chrome where the web address bar is…all the way over to the right side you will see three parallel bars. If you click on those bars you get a drop down menu of settings.

About the middle of the menu you will see ‘zoom’ and a minus sign, a percentage of the screen view size and a plus sign. Clicking on those takes the viewing window up and down in size.

My late father-in-law had the City of Philadelphia install a disabled parking spot in front of his house (on a residential street) and then called the police to ticket and tow any vehicle NOT HIS that parked there. This BTW included other blue-tag vehicles (which the police refused to ticket because it was a designated blue-tag spot, not my FIL’s own personal spot.

I can kind of understand that if you live in a neighborhood where the houses have no garage or driveway to park in, and you spent hours shoveling a spot in front of your house, you’d get possessive about it and FOR CHRIST SAKE you can’t kill over it.

Adding to the probability that this in fact WAS triggered by a parking dispute,

Could be that personal and ideological animosities fed each other.

Human motivations are complicated - and sometimes contradictory (e.g., you always hurt the one you love)

It’s possible that Hicks recently gravitated to anti-theism. A 2011 post showing what Hicks said was an award he received at work which described him as an “ordained deistic minister.”

I grew up with guns. One day we had a bunch of old ammo to burn and there was a maple tree my father wanted to take down in the back yard…guess how we did it?

That’s not to say I wasn’t taught to be responsible with fire arms I learned the rules early on and while there were times I could have easily gone on a killing spree I knew better and knew the guns wouldn’t solve the problem.

Oh I remember the parking related shit people would go through when I was in college. Made me thankful I rode my bicycle or walked most days.

I recall incidents of people shooting each other in Chicago over parking places after the blizzard of 1978. Imagine spending five hours digging you car out and then having someone take “your” spot…

re: #24 Jayleia

Sounds like you’re trying to apply the wrong axis or grouping mechanism. Instead of explaining this by using the “atheist” and “religious” labels perhaps try “asshole” and “non-asshole”.

Thankfully, the people on our street (all 3+ unit buildings) were very respectful of the chairs that took up our cleaned out spots. We never had any incidents on our block.

I remember trying to start my car when it was, not just full of snow, but frigid (-40). That winter sucked.

Based on the excerpt I read at TPM, he was mostly upset by the hypocrisy of Christians who opposed the mosque.

JRW Stripped of U.S. Little League World Series Title For Violating Residency Rules

“This is a heartbreaking decision,” Little League International President and CEO Stephen D. Keener said in a statement. “What these players accomplished on the field and the memories and lessons they have learned during the Little League World Series tournament is something the kids can be proud of, but it is unfortunate that the actions of adults have led to this outcome.”

In addition, team manager Darold Butler was suspended from Little League activity and Illinois District 4 Administrator Michael Kelly was removed from his position, Little League International spokesman Brian McClintock said in a statement.

Your great comment triggered a thought.

There was a time when most people acted on what they believed in.

Anymore it seems some are more motivated by what they do not believe in.

Positive. Negative.

Too large a percentage of the mindset of the world today is definitely all about the negative. And a big slice of the media wallows in the negative. Negative never built much good.

It’s sad.

Its entirely possible that there is confirmation bias on my part, its also possible that I’ve gotten better at noticing things that were already there and its also possible that I’m right. I haven’t measured it, its not objective, its subjective.

I remember trying to start my car when it was, not just full of snow, but frigid (-40). That winter sucked.

I used to park out front of my house. I have one smallish VW hatchback. I have neighbors that have three and four vehicles per house. Remember, big old classic homes with room for multi-family or multi-friend living. It got to a point I couldn’t find a spot to park. And do you think any of the neighbors really cared?

Snow? One time I was just finished cleaning out my parking spot and was getting ready to back into the cleaned spot when one of the dudes across the street drove up and pulled right into the just cleaned spot. He had to have seen I was in my car and the backup lights were on as I was in reverse.

I got out and said “Really” and he said oh…I didn’t see you there or know that was your spot, its a public street, and besides, I’m just going to be here for a while. Hours later, he was still there.

I now park in my garage after I got it cleaned all out from the building materials and deconstruction crap so I can use it and the rear alley.

Some people can just be unbelievable jackasses.

I do find it disconcerting to be grouped with assholes on the basis of NOT believing in the same thing. We don’t share a belief, we share a NON-belief. I also don’t believe in Santa Claus, but I don’t hear people talking about the Aclausist Community.
