Tennessee Republican Wants Bible to Be the State Book

You know, it’s almost as if Republicans don’t really like the United States Constitution, because they keep introducing legislation that blatantly violates the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment: Tennessee Lawmaker Wants Bible to Be the State Book.

WASHINGTON — A Tennessee state legislator has introduced a bill to make the Bible the official state book, after two other Southern states considered similar moves in recent months.

State Rep. Jerry Sexton (R) put forward his legislation Tuesday. He did not return a request for additional comment.

Caitlin MacNeal at TPM points out that Tennessee’s own state constitution says:

Section 3. That all men have a natural and indefeasible right to worship Almighty God according to the dictates of their own conscience; that no man can of right be compelled to attend, erect, or support any place of worship, or to maintain any minister against his consent; that no human authority can, in any case whatever, control or interfere with the rights of conscience; and that no preference shall ever be given, by law, to any religious establishment or mode of worship.

It’s horrifying that in 2015, religious fanatics are totally in control of the Republican Party; just look at the Republicans currently considered front runners for the 2016 GOP presidential nomination — they’re all creationists.

It’s worse than just Republican lawmakers. A full 42% of the US population would qualify as “religious fanatics” as measured by the rejection of Science in favor of myth and fantasy. It’s as if Conservatives think that Reality and Science are decided by vote and popularity, not facts and experimentation.

I miss those days.

It’s a banner week for GOPers proposing unconstitutional stuff or items that have precisely zero chance of being enacted, even with a GOP majority in Congress.

There’s this nonsense of trying to make the Bible the “state book” (1st Amendment establishment clause violation).

You’ve got Ted Cruz pushing a SSM ban constitutional amendment through Congress, because he doesn’t like the direction that the federal courts have gone - providing equal rights and protections to gay couples and that has absolutely no impact on heterosexual marriages, or the rights of a particular church to recognize said marriage.

Then you’ve got Rand Paul’s latest riff on the audit the fed BS.

What will tomorrow bring? SS/DD, I’m sure of it.

Yeah I always laugh when they talk about the “official bible” or having it as the “official book” since they usually are referring to the King James version (keyword version) which was a re-written version of the “official” “version” and re-written in such a way as to confirm the structure of the church of england.

Bergen County Rail Line service is suspended between Secaucus and Glen Rock stations due to trespasser fatality in Garfield.

Now, this could be a suicide, or someone who accidentally was struck, but the odds are that it was a suicide. That area frequently sees suicides, and fencing has reduced the numbers in recent years, but sadly someone else made a bad decision to walk on/near active rail service.

How people read the Bible actually is really important for understanding the intersection of religion and social conservatism in US.

Prooftext is a big part of wingnut religion. And often the text meaning is transformed because an authority figure hand down its “truth” citing divine revelation or skill divining the gnostic significances of plain words.

Ever heard the term “prophecy scholar”? It means a dude who chops and filters the Bible (generally with an eye towards The End Times)…and gets paid for it. Hal Lindsey, Tim LaHaye, David Barton…all do this.

A Florida school district on Tuesday banned the distribution of religious materials from outside organizations after a Satanic group tried to hand out coloring books to students, according to theOrlando Sentinel.

The Orange County school district, which includes Orlando, had allowed religious groups to hand out materials each year on Religious Freedom Day. The Christian group World Changers distributed Bibles to students, and the board allowed the Central Florida Freethought Community to hand out atheist materials last year after the group won a lawsuit.

But when the Satanic Temple, known for trying to build a Satanist monument in the Oklahoma state capitol, tried to hand out coloring books to students, the county board of education considered changing the rules. The district postponed Religious Freedom Day, and then the school board on Tuesday voted to change its policy.

The board decided to ban the distribution of religious, political, and sectarian materials from outside groups.

RALEIGH — Outside lawyers have billed the state of North Carolina more than $107,000 to appeal federal court rulings that have legalized gay marriage in the state, a cost the attorney general calls a waste and one that even some Republicans question.

Tragic. No doubt he kept a gun for home protection and lived alone.

When I asked the Sheriff’s Dept to do a welfare check on my g-daughter this am, they asked if there were guns in the house. I had to tell them I didn’t really know, since I’ve not seen any there.

This sucks on so many levels.

It is the right decision if they were found to have cheated. If there are boundaries that were falsified, poop on you adults.

But if Little League didn’t have a clue this was going on earlier, or there was no structure in place to figure something like this out, shame on them as well. It wan’t all that long ago when Danny Almonte was found to have been too old to be eligible, after his team (from NY I think) was so successful. You would think that the Little League organization would look to find out things prior to the major part of the tournament.

The other thing that really is driving me crazy is the obvious racial undertones. Now we will have plenty that will place the blame on “TEH BLAHS”, and how “SEE HOW THEY ALL ARE CHEATS” and OBAMA OBAMA OBAMA CUZ CHICAGO

Bonus comment at Schussel’s site:
Your remarks are certainly eye opening. Generally those people who choose to go into enemy territory without fear for their lives must feel a certain comfort and kinship with them in order to feel they are going to be safe. It is interesting to note that Mueller’s last letter which became public yesterday, she made a point of saying that she was being treated well and with respect. Apparently she was protecting her “captors, trying to present them a nicer light than the beasts they have proven to be. She did not feel threaten in her position as hostage, even as other hostages have been beheaded. I’ll shed no more tears for this traitor.

I am of the opinion that LE should not be invited into a situation where violence is not already present at this point. Too many incidents of cops bringing gunfire into places where nothing was going on to begin with.

This is not how I remember LE in the 70’s and 80’s, btw.

Don’t bother reading Schlussel. She turns everything into an Islamaphobic rant. Everything. She was reviewing Speilberg’s remake of War of the Worlds and claimed it was an attempt to lull us into complacency for when the Muslims hordes attack. She thinks Brigitte Gabriel and Denis Prager are supporters of Islamic Jihad. She is not a well woman.

What the fuck happened to North Carolina.

The only news that comes out of my state is bad. Period.

Just this week alone:

1.0 Beloved UNC coach dies…

2.0 Police officer shoots and kills 74 year old African American veteran recuperating from surgery while condicting a “welfare check” requested by the family (at 11:30 at night while breaking down the man’s back door)…

3.0 Wacko kills Muslim siblings for no seeming reason…

4.0 Reported today that lawyers have billed North Carolina taxpayers more than $107,000 in fees over same sex marriage appeals…

Christ. What gives.

You guys are getting off cheap. Idaho has already racked up $400,000.00 with a request for another $300,000.00 pending. Total cost to taxpayers will probably exceed $1,000,000.00 before all is said and done.

Peter Thiel may be a crazed libertarian in his politics, but his observations on business sometimes make sense. IIRC, one of his better ideas is to have relatively low pay for CEOs of startups.

Most people have never read through the entire Bible. However, most telling amongst those that have, a significant percentage of Evangelicals I’ve known choose to highlight the particular verses or even individual words that they themselves deem most important. Their Bibles are rife with yellow highlight pens and ink outlines and underlines denoting what they choose to follow and conveniently by default degrading to lesser importance the rest of the stuff that kind of gets in the way of the predetermined right wing ideology.
