Scott Walker in London: Q: Do You Believe in Evolution? A: I’m Going to Punt

Anti-science Republican ashamed to admit it
Politics • Views: 34,860

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker is making an ass of himself in London today, by answering the question, “Do you believe in evolution?” with “I’m going to punt on that one.”

Walker obviously knows that in Britain, acceptance of the fact of evolution is nearly universal — and Brits know that in the US, rejection of evolution among Republicans is nearly universal. That’s why the question was asked, and that’s why Walker dodged it, because he knew that answering truthfully would make him look like a fool.

As for his comment that “a politician shouldn’t be involved” in this issue, that’s also incredibly disingenuous. Walker is undoubtedly aware that Republican politicians have been heavily involved in trying to sneak creationism into US public schools for decades, and in Wisconsin many taxpayer-funded voucher schools (a very popular Republican idea) are currently teaching young Earth creationism to students.

What a disgrace.

Geez, if he can’t take a stand on something this straight forward, how can he lead on something actually disputed. How can he bring the nation together if he can’t even agree on science.

Yeah, I know, it’s Walker and the rest of the GOP want to take a pass on science, all while claiming that they’re pro science and pro-America even as they undermine basic research, math, science, and impose religious views inside science classrooms.

Journalists shouldn’t let these politicians dodge answers like this. Or they should highlight them at every opportunity.

13 Mattand  Feb 11, 2015 12:42:52pm

So let’s recap:

• Republican Bobby Jindal goes to Europe and re-iterates the Muslim No-Go Zone myth a full week after even Fox News backed down and retracted it.

• Republican Chris Christie goes to London, and after visiting a pharmaceutical manufacturer, essentially endorses the anti-vax crowd’s desire to start epidemics.

• Republican Scott Walker visits London and declares to the world that basic scientific fact scares him. In Darwin’s home country, no less.

I can’t wait for Jeb Bush to go to London. It’s like the Clown Car passengers are contractually compelled to say something idiotic.

Looking at photos of Scott Walker is always disorienting. His hair always looks like it’s sliding off to one side and his face always says ‘No life lives here’.

I feel so sorry for my sister who moved to eastern WI from Minneapolis because her husband wanted to move back near his home town. She has a 10 year old daughter and absolutely HATES what Walker is doing to WI (and she hates Wisconsinites for electing him the second time).

I’ll be happy when Walker finally gets indicted for corruption.

Walker, an evangelical Christian and the 47-year-old son of a Baptist preacher, also declined to answer a series of questions about foreign policy, including how the West should combat the Islamic State group, whether the U.S. should arm Ukrainian rebels and whether it’s wise for Great Britain to remain in the European Union.

“I don’t think it’s polite to respond on policy in the United States when you’re in a foreign country,” Walker said when asked about Islamic State. “That’s certainly something I’ll answer in the future.”

I’m actually kind of torn on that response, mainly because it’s showing the absolute barest minimum of respect to the President. Which, unfortunately for the GOP these days, is ground for a parade and medal.

you know, they need to stop asking “do you believe in evolution”. i think the word “believe” imparts some sort of spiritual/religious meaning to the question. like, you can’t believe in evolution and believe in a higher power.

the correct question is, “is evolution a fact?”. (and the correct answer is, “yes”)

just my two cents.

No current GOP pol can answer any differently for a very practical reason: if they admit the reality of GCC - even if they deny our part in causing it - then they’d have to do something about it. Their jobs plan, ACA alternative, and budgets suggest that the results, if any, would not be pretty.

The Mississippi Klan salutes Alabama’s chief justice Roy Moore, for refusing to bow to the yoke of Federal tyranny. The Feds have no authority over individual States marriage laws. The fudgepackers from Hollywood and all major news networks are in shock that the good people from the heart of Dixie are resisting their Imperialist, Communist Homosexual agenda!
Alabama has a Constitutional amendment, that clearly says marriage is defined as being between a man and a woman. But much as they have since the 2nd war for independence was lost in 1865, the Federal Government by way of it’s foreign masters seems set to push this abomination, on the God fearing people of Alabama. Will they send Jack Booted thugs to enforce it? Remains to be seen, but a simple study of history will show they once burned, destroyed and looted the state of Alabama. Georgia was burned almost to the ground, and in our state, Meridian Mississippi was destroyed by blue bellied sledgehammers in one day.

We call upon all Klansman and White Southern Nationalist to help in the massive protest’s coming, Not by wearing your colors, but by joining in with the Christian community’s protests that are surly coming against tyranical Federal judges. We have made the decision that we don’t want to distract attention away from the issue, as anytime the Klan rides, we are made the issue by the zionist controlled media. Members are encouraged to lend a hand, make signs, recruit etc., but leave any insignia, colors, shirts etc at the house. We want to infiltrate these protests and make sure they are kept running in military fashion and not bullied by the outside agitators.

Let today be the day, that the outside forces that have ruled this nation since the end of the War of Northern Aggression be given notice, “The God fearing White man will no longer stand for your immorality, your Illegal unjust judges and laws. Your attempts to turn us into a third world cesspool must be defeated. Unlike the 1950’s and 60’s we see you clearly for the enemy you are. Until we drive the spear of God and truth through your lying cold black hearts, the Klan will leave the light on for you.

Ok, so let’s give Walker a pass on the evolution question. [not really, but follow me here]

How about this followup then:

Why is Walker cutting $300 million from the University of Wisconsin budget, while agreeing to a $250 million assist to the billionaire owners of a pro sports team to build a new stadium that they could build with their pocket change? Seems that his priorities isn’t educating Wisconsinites, but rather larding the pockets of rich folks.

Mind you, the governor thinks that cutting the budget gives more autonomy to the university system, even though it means that they’ll have to raise tuition even further to cover costs, and that reduces the number of people who can actually afford to attend.

Oh, and the stadium deal rests upon some assumptions about tax revenues, that if the GOP holds to form, will fall short, leaving taxpayers holding the bag once again.

But proffer a plan to build mass transit and they’ll rail against any expenditure, no matter how useful it would be to the public.

My time here’s short because I’m on break at work, but I’d have to make the point that for Scott Walker answering this question was a no-win scenario. To oppose evolution would have exposed him to being called a fool while to support it would annoy the support of religious conservatives whose support is needed to get the Republican nomination. Thus, punting was the smart play.

Moreover, asking about evolution in American politics today is less about science and more about factional identification. “Do you believe in evolution?” really means “Do you believe in a particular worldview?”

I do believe in evolution, btw. But in politics, matters relating to evolution are a strange game and Scott Walker made the only logical move by refusing to play.

A quote from his wife’s attorney:

“It has nothing to do with terrorism. It has nothing to do with anything but the mundane issue of this man being frustrated day in and day out and not being able to park where he wanted to park,” said attorney Rob Maitland. “These victims were there at the wrong time and wrong place.”

Maitland said in his opinion the case highlights the importance of access to mental health care.

Three people shot in their own apartment, in the head, and they were there at the wrong time and wrong place. Right.

It’s only a losing proposition if you’ve staked your career with a political party that treats things like science fact and reality as optional.

You know what the difference between Walker denying evolution and denying things like gravity, or if the sky is blue? Nothing.

Speaking of lawyers:

President Barack Obama “did a terrible disservice” to European Jews by calling the January murders at a kosher deli in Paris a random offshoot of the al-Qaida-inspired Charlie Hebdo massacre, and his spokesman compounded the error by insisting the president was right, says noted lawyer and author Alan Dershowitz.

I would say it is important to them because it forms one of the cornerstones of their religious faith. Which is fine, that’s their right.

What isn’t their right is to push for disregarding scientific fact in order to have it taught in schools, including to children who are not of that religious faith.

I don’t really give two shits whether a politician believes in evolution or not; I do care if they’re going to bend backwards and court people who want their version of religion shoved into schools with no regard for actual science, especially if the price of that support ends up being allowing folks their way on this.

Because their worldview is based upon being told by their pastors/priests/selected authority figures that the book their authority is based on is absolute, not to be questioned, and to be literally interpreted as the figures say it should be. And part of this passed on worldview is that *they* are the select and are therefore better than the *other* people.

They, for the most part, think the bible is all they need to know about “creation”, beginning with the first chapter, first verse of Genesis: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.”

Now, could someone tell me how—if things were as described, such as the earth, “formless and empty” and no description of what kind of “deep”, where did the “water” come from and where was it?

Because they value certainty over truth. In discussions of Creation vs Evolution you hear this ALL THE FUCKING TIME! “Science keeps changing its mind! * I’ll stick with the Bible! It doesn’t change!!!”

Some people, even otherwise very intelligent people, cannot handle the uncertainty of reality. These same people tend to insist on watershed moments, like the moment of fertilization making a ovum into a baby; they also tend to insist on Either/Or situations - “Either you’re with us, Or you’re with the terr’rists”; Either you believe every word of the Bible is the inerrant Word of God, or you’re a godless atheist.

They don’t think this way because they’re backwards rubes. They’re backwards rubes because they think this way.

* No, really, it doesn’t. That’s the whole point. “Science” didn’t believe in Phlogiston. It was a popular hypothesis because it explained all the observations right up until it didn’t, and then it was discarded.

I think for Christian leaders it’s because Creationism supports the authority of a divine reality and extends that authority to leaders over believers… because the next thing they say after “The world has a Creator” is “Wanna meet him? Because I know a guy!”

For followers, Creationism supports the idea that everything is in order as it is supposed to be and comforts them.

Jewish and Muslim creationists may do it for similar reasons, but the agendas of those Creationist groups seem to be more about the power of inherited traditions instead of trying to “debunk” evil-ution.

Creationism has become a badge of the conservative movement because “If you can make someone believe absurdities, you can make them commit atrocities” is a guiding principle of US conservatism these days.

Bullshit. I’ve heard again and again how Evolution is a worldview, that if I ‘believe in’ Evolution, I cannot object to things like rape or slavery, because according to ‘The Evolutionary Worldview”, that’s all just survival of the fittest.

It’s horseshit. It’s an attempt to reduce one of the best-supported scientific Theories to a religion, so that it’s on an equal footing with religious belief, simultaneously raising the religious belief to the level of scientific Theory (defined as we in Science define ‘theory’, not the popular definition). It is done to create a dichotomy where none exists.

Neighbors described Hicks as an angry, hulking figure who exploded in rage over parking spaces and noise.

“He was very disgruntled, very aggressive. He would scream at people,” said Samantha Maness, 25, a technical college student who lives across a parking lot from the apartments of Hicks and two of the three slain students in a housing complex of winding streets and towering loblolly pines a few miles from the University of North Carolina campus.

“He made everyone feel uncomfortable and unsafe,” Maness said Wednesday, speaking outside Hick’s upstairs apartment, which backs up to an adjoining apartment where two of the shooting victims lived. Flowers had been left on the lawn in front of the building.

Residents of Finley Forest apartments in Chapel Hill had been so alarmed by Hicks’ rants that they called a community meeting last year, Maness said. Residents shared stories about being confronted by Hicks, but no one mentioned the meeting to Hicks and nothing came of it, she said.

Maness said she never heard Hicks refer to anyone’s religion or race. “He had equal opportunity anger toward all the residents,” she said.

Again, that’s what that question was really about.

And let me ask a question myself: Why do folks here think creationism is important to people who believe in it? In answering, please avoid simplistic answers like “Because they’re backwards rubes.”, as those don’t help much.

I’ll be back later to read what folks have to say.

In the context of the religious groups controlling US social conservatism, creationism is Biblical “literalism,” and literalism is about appropriating God as a political bludgeon.

Creationism in one stroke nullifies not only skepticism and empiricism, but draws a hard line between “real Christians” and “people who don’t think the Bible is true.”

It’s not an ideological test, it’s an epistemological test. You have to accept truth as solely divine, and solely distributed through “real Christians” that read the Bible the only correct way. You’re not allowed to talked about the Bible as a historical document, or a cultural text, or as a translation: it’s True, True, True. It doesn’t matter how much rabbis or cardinals have debated whether Genesis’s creation is myth, metaphor, or narration, it’s True.

Hence the subsequent elaboration of creationism, “teaching the controversy,” in which a false dichotomy is formed between singular divine creation and biology/geology/astrophysics/etc. Disappeared is all the complexity and nuance of interpreting Genesis, all the history and theology…it’s just “the other theory.”

Booo! This is as weak as Walker.

You realize your own responses to this indicate you know how lame these GOP candidates really are. “Not ready to play” really means not ready to be a true presidential candidate…not ready for prime time.

If you ask, say, a fundamentalist Christian, “Do you believe 100% that God exists”, the answer will be pretty straightforward. If you ask Dawkins, he will answer “I don’t know for certain but I think God is very improbable, and I live my life on the assumption that he is not there”.

Unfortunately, fostering ignorance in the name of party unity is only the starting point for this crap. The GOP’s massive problems with racism, misogyny and homophobia also need to be studiously ignored.

Not so incidentally, the GOP’s nearly complete lack of any rationally defensible policy proposals at all is also on the lengthy list of things to be ignored.

Why is someone that is a conservative and so staunch a supporter of the second amendment asking that question knowing the first is pretty damn clear. You can’t be a conservative if you choose your amendments.

12 years of Catholic school in a damn good program filled with the classic liberal arts education and never a mention of creationism. You know why? Because the Catholic based education never ran away from the thinking. They have their issues with things like birth control, but when it comes to practical sciences, they know creationism is bull.

It’s made up claptrap that is designed to fight off evolution and advancing science back early in the century when the progressive movement and the industrial revolution were passing woo-woo old time religion. It has really gained a foothold since the 70s due to the Jesus-freak movement, TV preachers and media, and the huge mega-churches.

The Older Boy’s Girl Friend (OBGF) was raised in a Conservative Christian home - even homeschooled - but it didn’t take. It left her with a jaundiced view of belief and believers. She had never experienced the kind of Christians who raised me.

Because faith is constant and science is ever changing.

For people taught to fear from a young age (and I’ve never known a ‘conservative Christian’ who wasn’t terrified of everything, starting with God) science is a slippery slope leading to Hell.

Humans don’t like to think and a fair number of them really don’t like it. For them faith is a substitute for thought.

So the Universe is only 6,000 year old, modern animals descended from ‘kinds’ on The Ark and God punishes the wicked. Plus, although they don’t talk about it when heretics and unbelievers are around, their faith absolves them of guilt when said heretics and unbelievers are made to suffer at the faithful’s hands.

It’s that whole ‘assholeism’ thing again.

I used to get dinged for ‘making fun of people’s beliefs’, when I responded to people who told me I didn’t believe in God so I could be as sinful as I want, with the following:

We say that ‘ethics’ is how you behave when nobody is watching. But if you’re a believer, there’s NEVER ‘nobody watching’, so believers cannot be said to be ethical.

Boy, did that piss them off.

Me too. I get very uncomfortable when criticism of organized religions starts getting into accusations of being ‘uniquely evil’.

IMO, that is a more reliable marker for ‘fundamentalism’ than statements of non-belief which allow for the possibility of refutation based on new evidence.

I don’t know enough about Dawkins to say whether he goes too far (IMO) along these lines or not, but I’ve certainly seen the anti-Muslim version of this at LGF from some commenters, since banned.

Yesterday, the Illinois Senator who told lies about his war record at least as bad as those of Brian Williams:

“The Republicans - if there is a successful attack during a DHS shutdown - we should build a number of coffins outside each Democratic office and say, ‘You are responsible for these dead Americans.’”

But today a complete 180:

“I generally agree with the Democratic position here. I think we should have never fought this battle on DHS funding,” the Illinois senator said in the Capitol. “I think it’s the wrong battle for us at the wrong time.”…

Asked by TPM if McConnell should allow a vote on a “clean” DHS funding bill without the immigration provisions, Kirk said, “Yeah, I think in the end — yeah,” and flashed a thumbs up. That makes him the first Republican senator to call on his leaders to back away from the immigration fight.

Amazing!

I’m a child of the Space Shuttle program. I always wanted to attend a launch, but as a middle-class family in the Midwest with two young children, a trip to Cape Canaveral wasn’t exactly in the cards. LGF is one of the first places I have been on the Internet where the majority of people are willing to respect others’ beliefs and the attitude of “you’re an idiot because you believe x” is remarkably absent. It is one of the major reasons I am willing to stick around for religion discussions here, and their interaction with politics.

I am a firm believer in everyone having the right to believe whatever the hell they want as long as it does not impact others’ lives and rights, and they don’t try to shove my face in it. Atheists can fail that test just as easily as any other group, because people of all types can be assholes.

Advocates Join Fight To Eliminate Detroit’s Rape Kit Backlog

But the city doesn’t have nearly enough money to investigate and prosecute all of these cases.

“It’s ridiculous,” says Kym Worthy, the prosecutor for Wayne County, which includes Detroit.

She says it’s taken a ton of work just to get the state and federal government to pay $5.5 million to test the kits and do some initial investigations.

“It was a fight to try to get funds, you know, dollars and cents to do this,” Worthy says.

But they still need about $10 million more to investigate and prosecute the rest of the cases.

And that’s where Peg Tallet comes in. She works with the Michigan Women’s Foundation, which is asking businesses, foundations and even just regular people to help them raise this $10 million.

There’s still the fact that he shot specifically Muslims, and since we can’t get into his head, it is possible that there was an ideological motive on top of all that. But so far it does seem to be as the police says.

I thought it was a decent film, but not at all funny. Douglas’s character is deeply fucked up and the story doesn’t really try to justify his behavior in any way. If anything I think it’s about the dysfunctional nature of our society and the toxic pathology that can develop when the myth of masculinity crashes into modern reality.

The scene where he murders the Neo Nazi surplus store owner is the kicker. You can read it as him rejecting the comparison, I see it as him reacting violently to the truth of it, the murder is a form of denial. They really aren’t that different, they’re both on the same, sick antisocial spectrum.

Another interesting note about the movie:

Michael Douglas considers this his favorite performance of all the movies he has been in.

310 iossarian  Feb 11, 2015 3:51:56pm

re: #307 goddamnedfrank

I haven’t seen it for a while - I think I agree with you - thought it was pretty good and thought-provoking, but not “funny” at all. The guy’s clearly a psychotic mess. I’m frankly surprised to hear that people might think he was some kind of positive role model.

Might fit for a number of people as the actual implementation of a fantasy acting out over-the-top reaction to the pet peeves of interacting with the rest of society. All the folk that pissed you off get what is coming - and you are feared as well since you might bring violence down upon them.

I totally agree. I joined because of the community; this is the only site where I actually look forward to reading the comments and discussions. Not because I always agree with what is said, but because issues can be discussed in a rational fashion and without the flame wars that characterize many sites. At the same time, I can hear viewpoints from a diverse group of folks.

A more pithy explanation: the lack of total assholes makes the site appealing.

That makes me think of the scene in “Siegfried”, where Siegfried finds Brunnhilde on her rock, surrounded by the fire Wotan put there. He lifts her breastplate and says, “Das is kein Mann!”

As Anna Russel says of Siegfried, “…and he’s very handsome, and he’s very strong, and he’s very stupid.”

Makes me think of the Witch King of Angmar saying “No man can slay me!” and Eowyn removes her helmet and declares “I am no man!”

This one was fixed from the get go. They won’t let them out of the shelter w/o it. His body language around other animals has generally been friendly, even though he’ll bark (about the only time he’ll bark!).

Interestingly, he was the only “small” dog in the pens. All the others were pit bulls, a few lab mixes and an akita/pug mix (WTF?). He was the only one who paid attention to us when we took him out on the leash. All the others just wanted to say “Fuck you” to the other dogs. lol.

He likes to run. I want to get him off the leash outside, but need to find the right place.

re: #69 Dark_Falcon

Moreover, asking about evolution in American politics today is less about science and more about factional identification. “Do you believe in evolution?” really means “Do you believe in a particular worldview?”

I do believe in evolution, btw. But in politics, matters relating to evolution are a strange game and Scott Walker made the only logical move by refusing to play.

Waited to respond to this in hopes that Dark will actually see it.

You say the question is really “Do you believe in a particular worldview?”
No, the question is really whether they accept the answers that science has provided. This isn’t a question of belief/opinion, it’s a question about accepting reality. The right wing has tried to define science as another religion in attempts to justify their refusal to accept simple facts.

When the RWs deny evolution, climate change, etc., they are saying that they prefer to live in an imaginary world rather than the real one. So I’ll ask you: should policy decisions be made using the best evidence and tools available or should they be based on someone’s belief system that ignores evidence?

Will denial of the reality of climate change keep coastal cities from flooding? Will denial of evolution keep bacteria from mutating to antibiotic resistant strains? You really want policy to be based on someone’s specific religious beliefs or greed rather than facts, evidence and experience?

I don’t! And this isn’t tribalism, but rather dealing with things as they are as opposed to how I’d like them to be.

461 Egregious Philbin  Feb 11, 2015 5:09:52pm

Yeah, my male was long and thin and had lots of instinct. He regularly found and killed roof rats and gophers. The female is a lover, she just wants to obey and have fun, but if you play rough with her, she will get just a tiny bit bitey, then she walks away and acts out on a toy. Irish terriers have long bodies and high legs, they get that from the Irish Wolfhound.

A Georgia Republican legislator introduced a bill he said would ban the mixing of human and jellyfish embryos… “I’ve had people tell me it is but I have not verified that for sure,” state Rep. Tom Kirby (R) told WSB-TV. “It’s time we either get in front of it or we’re going to be chasing our tails.”

re: #461 Egregious Philbin

Yeah, my male was long and thin and had lots of instinct. He regularly found and killed roof rats and gophers. The female is a lover, she just wants to obey and have fun, but if you play rough with her, she will get just a tiny bit bitey, then she walks away and acts out on a toy. Irish terriers have long bodies and high legs, they get that from the Irish Wolfhound.

This guy is so loving (so far). He’s torn up some toys already, but he really wants to be petted. He will lay by your side all night, walk with you, run and play fetch, ask to go outside, the whole nine yards. He did “gently” bite my SO on the behind last night because she wasn’t paying attention to him (lol), but licks all the faces he can find. I hope he doesn’t grow up to be an asshole.

Now that I’m looking at the images, it seems right. He looks Irish Terrier in a way, but his coat is more blonde and not so red - if that makes sense.

funny thing about that:

Lower gas prices mean happier consumers, however, the lower prices also mean a reduction in state funding to counties for road projects and repairs.

Counties across the commonwealth are facing the same issue of reduced funds from the state’s gasoline tax. Revenues from the tax have taken a hit since wholesale and prices at the pump have dropped in recent months.

Read up on the breed, they can be very stubborn, as terriers are, but they are intensely loyal dogs, and they have earned their nickname of “daredevil”, they are very fearless, not always a good thing though…

It is a fairly rare breed, didn’t used to be, in the early 1900’s it was a very popular breed, one of the Presidents had one. Thankfully, they do not do well in puppy farms, and the breeders have been very strict with breeding, so there are no serious health issues attributed to the breed.

Lake Placid remains one of my favorite bad movies just because of Oliver Platt and that line:

Hector Cyr: “Well, they conceal information like that in books.”

Love that movie.

I’m not a mathematician, so I have no idea whether pi-sequence, though infinite, is purely random, which seems to be a prerequisite for that. E.g. I have a slight doubt that pi contains exactly 10000000 8s somewhere.
