I stopped subscribing to The Atlantic due to the facts they refuse to acknowledge they sold subscriber info to third party subscription services and they were only in retrospect able to see the problem with turning over a piece of their website to Scientology . Even so, I still follow them on Twitter to remind myself I am not missing anything. Usually those moments come when I see David Frum’s latest idiocy, but not this time…

Well… Netgear WNDR3700v1 has been tossed into the trash (to be brought to Best Buy for recycling), and the new TP-Link Archer C9 is up and running. No need for that dinky unreliable range extender in the dining room. Signal goes all through the house now. Setup was a pain though. Two Roku boxes, of which the older one had to be factory reset before it could connect. The PS3 in the basement, and numerous tablets/laptops/phones. An hour of my life that I may get back in a few months. This router is a huge upgrade. And a 2 year warranty. Phew.

Hey Dark, since I answered your question seriously downstairs, I was wondering if you could answer one of mine. You said yesterday that Whitney Houston’s daughter ODed on drugs. What was your source for that?

I ask because I follow celebrity news as a lunch habit and I haven’t seen any reports that support this. Not to mention I have seen reports that her boyfriend is under investigation at the moment, potentially relating to this.

I saw that yesterday and my first thought was that I wish the report would have been nationwide so that people couldn’t point to the report as being anti-south and feeding anyone’s sense of victimhood. It reminded me of a story about three men being lynched in Duluth MN.

ON A JUNE NIGHT IN 1920, hundreds of angry men and thousands of curious onlookers surrounded the downtown headquarters of the Duluth police department. The crowd might have reached 10,000. They wanted the handful of police officers inside to turn over their prisoners - a group of young, black circus workers. The police had arrested the men earlier that day. They accused some of the out-of-towners of raping a young, white woman at the circus grounds. Later investigations cast serious doubt on the rape charges, but the howling mob outside the police station had no doubts.

In 2003, the city of Duluth created a memorial to the hanged men.

…the fact that lynchings took place in many parts of the country was underscored recently in the northern Minnesota city of Duluth when the city unveiled a moving memorial commemorating the deaths of Elmer Jackson, Elias Clayton and Isaac McGhie, three young black men who were lynched in Duluth in 1920 while a mob of 10,000 looked on. The dedication drew thousands of people from all over the area. The emotional high point came with a speech by Warren Read, a fourth-grade teacher from Kingston, Wash., who had learned while researching his family that his great-grandfather had helped lead the mob that stormed the local jail and took the three men, who were circus workers, from their cells. His voice choking with emotion, he apologized to the victims and their families.

Here’s a link to a webpage with photos of the memorial. It’s pretty moving even in the photos. This is the kind of memorial that should be built wherever hangings occurred.

Everywhere else in the world except for in North America and a few South American countries and England, that beer is known as Budweiser.
There’s really an interesting story regarding how the US brewery basically tried to steal the trademark that two breweries originated in what is now the Czech Republic in the 13th Century - predating Anheuser-Busch by more than 600 years. In just about every court case, the bigger AB brewery has lost- primarily because the name “Budweiser” is derived from the city where the beer was created - Budweis. As a result, Anheuser-Busch is barred from using the name outside of what are considered its home markets.

On this date in 1990 Nelson Mandela was released from prison in South Africa after 27 years, paving the way for the end of Apartheid…greatly disappointing Dick Cheney.

Never mind Cheney. Nelson Mandela was here in Seattle in 1999 to an enthusiastic reception. A week later, we played host to the WTO conference. Now if the WTO (yeah, I know it was called something else then) had had its way before 1990, the sanctions that got Mandela released would have been illegal, and he would still have been rotting on Robben Island. So the whole country’s schizophrenic on the subject.

At least the Battle of Seattle gave them a little pushback. The whole crowd would probably be mowed down with machine guns now….

208 RadicalModerate  Feb 11, 2015 9:07:32pm

Before anyone thinks that the Texas Legislature is having a bout of sanity in regards to their reaction to the open-carry nutcase, this bit of news came out of Austin today -
(forgive the cache, apparently Houston Chronicle has a good bit of its site behind a paywall now)

Lawmaker seeks to eliminate state Confederate holiday

The pushback that Republicans are putting on this is absolutely insane.

Democrat suggests Texas recognize Union too, but a critic says if one must change, it should be King’s birthday

In fact, the Austin Democrat can expect to hear more than that in response to her bill to replace Texas’ Confederate Heroes Day with a springtime Civil War Remembrance Day to honor all who fought in the Civil War. That’s all as in, both the Confederate and Union sides.

“We have quite a few holidays throughout the year that are either national holidays or are days of recognition,” Howard said. “I think there are so many that certain things get lost in the shuffle.”

This year, for instance, Confederate Heroes Day shared its traditional Jan. 19 commemoration with the national Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

[…]

Brand said she was not concerned with the coinciding holidays, but said if one has to change it should be the King holiday.

“We had Confederate Heroes Day before there was a Martin Luther King Jr. Day, why can’t they change theirs?” she asked. “I have no problem with them both being celebrated on the same day because most of the people who celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day don’t celebrate Confederate Heroes Day.”

Brand also is a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, a sister organization to the Sons of Confederate Veterans. Both groups organize memorials for prominent Confederate soldiers, as well as host banquets and reenactments throughout the year. The Sons of Confederate Veterans currently is in a legal battle with the state over its refusal to offer specialty license plates with the Confederate flag. The U.S. Supreme Court is scheduled to hear oral arguments on March 23.

Near the bottom of Pete’s Arena skiers regularly get clocked at over 80 m.p.h. in competition. They’re only going that fast for a few seconds, as the Birds of Prey is a terrain-filled course.

The skier in the video, Daron Rahlves, is a retired racer, so he held back to be sure. At his fastest at the bottom of Pete’s Arena he was definitely going well over 70 m.p.h.

‘I’m tired of running’: John McAfee reveals he’s settled with his wife in Tennessee - but is always armed and ready for a government raid

‘I’m finally tired of it, I’m settling down and I’m defending my home,’ he said.’ I’m tired of running. I’ve gone from being frightened to mostly angry.’

Still - he’s prepared for if authorities turn up at his door. He says it’s just a matter of time.

‘I’m fully prepared for the eventuality that there will be an attempted raid on my residence or my car or my person at some place or at some time,’ he said. ‘At some point you have to stand up and defend your position, your home, your family - and that’s what I’m doing.’

He claimed that his car had recently been shot at, but that the vehicle has been fitted with a heavy-duty crash guard in case he is ever cornered and needs to force his way through vehicles.

He added, ‘I am constantly armed, I am an excellent shot’ - explaining that he has won numerous shooting contests.

Authorities in Lexington [TN] and the mayor have welcomed him and his tech acumen with open arms, he said. He now lives there with his wife Janice, whom he married in 2013.

He works as a security expert for Fox News via Skype and occasionally appears at hacker conferences, where his security is tight.

(Bolding mine)

Is this guy sick in the head or just emulating UpChuck? Either way, I’m sure he fits in just fine at Fox News, as his paranoia and gun-stroking fit key demographics there.

Tea Party darling Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) introduced an anti-same-sex marriage bill that would strip federal marriage benefits from same-sex couples living in states where only mixed-gender marriages are recognized.

According to David Badash at the New Civil Rights Movement, Cruz’s State Marriage Defense Act will also give anti-same-sex marriage states the right to nullify the marriages of same-sex couples living within their borders, should the Supreme Court find that such couples ultimately do not have the same right to marry as other U.S. citizens.

Cruz has framed the bill as a “states’ rights” issue, insisting that the federal government has no say in determining whose marriages a state will recognize and whose it will not.

On a different note, this reminds me of a joke from WW2. A recent draftee is going through infantry training in Geogia. One exercise involves crossing an unstable rope bridge above a fast flowing stream. The soldier slips and catches himself but his rifle falls into the torrent. A search is hopeless so he returns to the barracks and reports the loss.

Payday rolls around and the soldier finds that his envelope contains only 27 dollars instead of the expected 82.
He returns to the paymaster, “Hey, sarge, what gives? Where’s the rest of my dough?”
The sergeant looks at him as though he were a bug, “Uncle Sam took it to pay for that rifle you lost. It’s a rule, you lose government property, you pay for it.”

The soldier responds, “Gee, now I see why the captain always goes down with his ship.”

Buzzfeed has a link to Hicks’ old posting:

buzzfeed.com

The first amendment to our constitution guarantees freedom of religion, which takes precedence over any other “feeling” that any of us as Americans may have.
Beyond that though after being in D.C. for a decade and knowing several dozen Muslims for most of that time I can say that they aren’t what most think of them. In fact, I’d prefer them to most Christians as I was never coerced in any way by the Muslims to follow their religion, which I cannot say about many Christians.
While the terrorists who did the 9/11 attacks were Muslims, they were extremists in that faith which isn’t common. I know of many Christian extremists personally, much less the ones we have heard about on the news. People of this country don’t seem to hold that against Christianity though(probably because they’re a majority in this country).
While it may cause problems with those that don’t want it there with vandalizing and such, what if that excuse stopped our forefathers from starting a new nation. Civil rights, suffrage, heck even our own gun rights have been “fought” for at times. On that matter, the vast majority of our own ancestors in this country had to fight for their rights as Americans as most of the ethnic groups in this country were looked down on at some point(some still are).
This country was founded on freedoms, and many forget that one of the biggest freedoms that was fought for was freedom of religion. Then after all was said and done, Americans pushed west and took the lands of the Native Americans, put them on reservations(land that has no use), and stuffed religion down their throat. Their children were often taken from them to be taught Christianity(brainwashed might be a better word). They were not allowed to have their ancestral hair or garments, not allowed to use their given names but had to use the Christian ones assigned to them, and not allowed to speak their native tongue among other things. Funny how during World War 2, the same government that violated the Native Americans 1st amendment rights in the previous century were called upon because of their ancestral language.
With all that being said, I don’t see how anyone who calls themselves American can claim that a Mosque shouldn’t be TWO BLOCKS AWAY from what is known as ground zero.

(Side note: it’s interesting that in an article pompously entitled “Everything We Know So Far About The Alleged Chapel Hill Shooter” Buzzfeed totally omits him being a liberal).

One day the different parts of the body were having an argument to see which should be in charge.
The brain said “I do all the thinking so I’m the most important and I should be in charge.”
The eyes said “I see everything and let the rest of you know where we are, so I’m the most important and I should be in charge.”
The hands said “Without me we wouldn’t be able to pick anything up or move anything. So I’m the most important and I should be in charge.”
The stomach said “I turn the food we eat into energy for the rest of you. Without me, we’d starve. So I’m the most important and I should be in charge.”
The legs said “Without me we wouldn’t be able to move anywhere. So I’m the most important and I should be in charge.”
Then the rectum said “I think I should be in charge.”
All the rest of the parts said “YOU? You don’t do anything! You’re not important! You can’t be in charge.”
So the rectum closed up. After a few days, the legs were all wobbly, the stomach was all queasy, the hands were all shaky, the eyes were all watery, and the brain was all cloudy.
They all agreed that they couldn’t take any more of this and agreed to put the rectum in charge.
The moral of the story: You don’t have to be the most important to be in charge, just an asshole.

Lots of tensions to be adjusted for to avoid the state turning into the US equivalent of the asteroid belt as part rips off to orbit Philadelphia, a bigger chunk to orbit New York City, and then a bunch of quasi-independent townships that are too small to support life.

And I’m sure a chunk or two that will simply hold large signs saying “TRUMP”.

A chemical plant explosion outside Barcelona has meant 60,000 are told to stay inside to avoid exposure to potentially toxic chemical brew.

A blast at a chemical plant cloaked a region in northern Spain in a huge orange toxic cloud on Thursday, according to local reports. Three at the plant some 30 miles from the city of Barcelona were injured in the explosion, which also forced some 60,000 people in the surrounding communities to remain confined indoors for hours, La Verdad newspaper reported.

The explosion at the installation owned by Simar — which distributes and stores chemicals, according to its website — occurred at 9:45 a.m. (3:45 a.m. ET), the newspaper reported. Company officials were not immediately available for comment.

Officials ordered school and university students to remain indoors and said parents should not pick them up, news website 20 Minutes reported. Pregnant women, children, the elderly and those with respiratory problems were told to remain indoors even after the general warning was lifted, according to La Verdad.

re: #225 Lidane

This would be the same Ted Cruz who’s repeatedly criticized the Obama administration for not vigorously enforcing federal drug laws in those states which have legalized marijuana.
Like all of the GOP’s other staunch defenders of states; rights, Cruz’s stance on the issue depends on whether or not the states enact laws of which he approves.

What will it take for a reporter to grow a pair and ask him if that’s true, does that mean that states don’t have to recognize interracial marriages if they don’t want to?

I don’t know how many actual reporters are near him. If he’s like a good amount of his brethren, he only has Fox types around him.

That was my first thought, too. But I give up on paying attention to this clown. He is really, truly stupid. Not just ignorant (for he is that, as well), but out and out stupid.

Hence how he fits in well with the rest of the Clown Car.

I’ve watched both his videos in order to parody them. It’s easy to do; I can just rephrase what he says and maybe exaggerate here and there. He parodies himself — no understanding of fact-based journalism, no realization of how his big scoops are big jokes to everyone else, no conception of how he’s “an empty hat, no cattle” figure in journalism.

Besides all that, he can’t write, and can’t develop a logical argument. UpChuck is not a shining example of the quality of a Claremont McKenna education.

Then, again, neither are Ted Cruz and Andy Schlafly shining examples of a Princeton education.

Warnings like that would happen in Houston/Baytown TX area every once in a while. Some storage tank of killer chemicals would rupture or an explosion at a plant. They would warn you to stay inside and shut off your air conditioner for a period of time. Breath in the chemicals.

Stock buybacks are another way that workers get screwed. Instead of passing on the profits to employees, the companies buy back company stock, which benefits a few shareholders at the expense of everyone else.

You’ve got Apple sitting on a hoard of cash that would make Smaug grin with delight. If they upped their wages to every last employee down to the idiots at the Genius bar, it might reduce that hoard by a few hundred million, but the ripple effect would be huge across the economy. And other companies might do the same in order to retain workers.

I’ve been in a plant* in Pasadena and during the tour was shown where the shrapnel rained down and damaged buildings after the plant next door had an alcohol reactor blow up.

The control room for the plant a few miles up the road in Laporte is a big concrete bunker.

* - We shared the site with 2-3 other companies and the buildings and support services were split up. Sunoco sold it off to someone else back in the 2000s when they started shedding their chemical plants and refineries.

Forgive my mini rant, but when did it become so hard to just pay for something at a store?

I was at a pharmacy last night to pick up two over the counter medicines for my wife.

That’s all. Nothing else.

I’m paying with debit and after swiping my card, this is what I go through:

1) Do you have one of our super awesome reward cards? YES/NO

NO

2) Would you like to sign up for one of our super awesome reward cards? YES/NO

NO

3) Care to donate to the American Heart Association? $1 $2 $5 NO THANKS

NO THANKS
(In my defense I donated to them the LAST time I was at this Pharmacy)

4) Would you like cash back? $20 $40 $60 OTHER NO

NO

5) TOTAL CORRECT? YES/NO

YES

6) PLEASE ENTER PIN

***

THANK YOU FOR YOUR PURCHASE.

I’m not against rewards cards (well ok, I sort of am but that’s a topic for another post) and I’m not against charitable giving but surely the cashier could have covered all that with me BEFORE I swiped the card?

I can’t help but wonder if this nonsense is a passive aggressive effort to make me switch back to using cash.

I don’t think they should be asking that at all.

Agreed. Radio Shack in fact got in some hot water a few years back when a bunch of cashiers added $1 LIVESTRONG donations to customers bills without their knowledge or consent.

Sometimes companies go way overboard with the charitable giving stuff. The last company I worked for ran a huge United Way campaign every year and, while employees were not required to donate (by way of a paycheck deduction), they sure pressured us to do so. Every year around the same time we were pulled into a two hour long “pep rally” and told about how awesome it was to donate and help those in need. The company also required us to fill out paperwork whether we donated or not. If you didn’t, you basically had to check a box that said “I do not wish to donate” and sign it.

It got so old listening to my supervisor telling us every single day how it was a really good idea to donate and that we should all seriously consider it. He even told me it’s a great way to “look good with the company”, implying that it might be good idea to donate if I was interested in advancing my career.

I still declined.

It’s the name of a character in an Ayn Rand novel, Anthem.

And this exemplifies the underlying pathology of the ammosexuals: they stock up on weapons and ammunition hoping that someday they can use them. When that day never arrives, they become frustrated and invent a reason to murder someone with their penis extensions.

This vigilante action is also crazy (Yes you Zimmerman). Call the police(not always going to end much better). And this vigilante actions don’t seem to be forgiven if the races/cultures are reversed.

I love my adoptive home state, I really do. But this just goes to show that Teh Crazy is just as prevalent here in the wild north country as it is anywhere. I feel the same way. I DO donate to charitable causes but I don’t always donate money, sometimes I donate my time to local organizations. If I do donate money, I give it to groups where I KNOW it’s being used directly to help people and not to pay the salary of some “Executive director”.

I give to Charity Newsies here in Columbus. They have a huge fund drive around Christmas where their volunteer members are out on major street corners from 8 am until about 4 pm collecting from people driving by. The police are usually helping them form a lane to pull up and stop and give your donation safely. You get a copy of the Columbus Dispatch for that day with a donation.

100% of the money goes into buying coats, pants, skirts, shirts, socks, underwear, gloves shoes and hats. They operate a store for people in the community to go to to get free clothing for school age children.

The volunteers receive recommendations and requests the rest of the year and then go out to the folk’s houses to do an interview of the needs. If a family qualifies, they get a certificate and then can go to the store to pick out the clothes for the kiddies. The store is also all volunteer operated,

It has been ongoing since the early 1900s. A great program.

Musk comments unsettle investors, stock falls

Tesla Motor shares dived in morning trading today after an unsettling analysts’ conference call with CEO Elon Musk late Wednesday, after the company announced large losses in the fourth quarter and for all of 2014.

The share price dropped as low as $193.40 this morning, down 9.1% from Wednesday’s close of $212.80. The price had worked back up near $200 by noon.

One of the comments by Musk that seemed to rattle investors was: “We’re going to spend staggering amounts of money on capex,” referring to capital expenditures on development of the Model X and Model 3, as well as the huge battery “gigafactory” under construction in Nevada.

Even though he reassured analysts the outlay will have “good ROI,” or return on investment, their remarks and questions in the call made clear that it was a startling comment.

He also said the effect of very slow sales in China had been “blown out of proportion,” even though he has said previously that China’s an important part of Tesla’s global expansion plans.

Tesla on Wednesday reported a loss of $107;.6 million, or $0.86 a share, in the fourth quarter, worse than the $74.7 million it lost a year earlier.

For all of 2014, the maker of electric luxury cars reported, it lost $294 million, vs. a loss of $74 million for all of 2013.

From the article:

Another tweet from her account that month offered an analysis of the Republicans running for lieutenant governor, using three words to describe Davis’s wife, Jeannemarie Davis, a former state delegate.

“She’s a slut,” read the tweet.

Not all of the derision was aimed at Republicans. At one point, a tweet from the account lashed out at Terry McAuliffe, then a candidate for governor, for his support for abortion rights.

“McAuliffe,” the tweet said, “just wants to kill babies for sport.”

She sounds nice.

Time for a new thread. This one’s getting old and fat.

I was dismayed to read a post on TPM by Amanda Marcotte, about how atheists should not blind ourselves to the possibility of violence in the name of atheism, after yesterday’s murderous attack on 3 Muslims in NC.

She speaks of atheism as a movement, a community, etc. I realize that humans are inherently tribal, but if atheism really is the rational conclusion, then it also gives atheists the opportunity to rise above irrational tribalism, by understanding that NOT believing in something is not an organizing principle. Forming communities and movements organized around a shared lack of belief is falling into the same trap we decry in religions.

But hey, I guess I’m becoming the voice that crieth in the wilderness.

I’m not sure you’re going to get much more evidence. The police have a confession, the murder weapon, all the evidence they need to put the guy away. I think the only source for evidence will be a defense lawyer who might try for some sort of case. From what we already know, this doesn’t look to me like a rage crime. I would expect a guy in a rage to be shouting at his victims, and he probably wouldn’t get a chance to shoot all 3 in the head.

Yes, not all communist violence is atheistic violence, but anti-believer violence in officially atheistic communist states, i.e. violence against believers for being believers, is atheistic violence. No, it doesn’t represent atheists, but it’s still atheistic violence.

Can’t agree on that. It was violence in the name of CONTROL, and in the countries like Russia where it occurred, the Church was competition for the State for control. It was primarily to wrest control from the church, much like Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries, and the establishment of the CofE.

TR may be out of the EDL, but I doubt he’s changed his ideology.

He hasn’t. His ‘renunciation’ of his extremism was a total sham; just look at his Twitter timeline. He’s every bit as hateful as ever, and it’s still directed at Muslims mostly.

A lot of people fell for his ‘change of heart’ who should have known better than to trust a duplicitous neo-Nazi skinhead piece of trash.

I’m not talking about violence against organizations, such as the church. I’m talking about violence against believers for believing. USSR was an officially atheistic state. An atheistic terror-state’s violence against believers based on their mere beliefs is atheistic violence, just as violence against non-Christians (non-Muslims, non-Jews, non-Hindus. …) in a Christian (Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, …) theocracy would be Christian (Muslim, Jewish, Hindu…) violence.

I see what you’re saying, but I don’t agree with your conclusion. IMO the USSR’s attack on religion was all about consolidating total control over the population, wresting it from any historical institution that might compete for that control.

But I’m also not happy with referring to violence against non-Christians by Christians as ‘Christian Violence’ (for example).

I read an article last night in which they reported talking to neighbors at the apartment complex. Not one of the people interviewed mentioned religion. They just said Hicks was angry all the time; angry to the point that it was brought up to the management how several people felt threatened by him, but nothing was ever done. Not one person mentioned religion as any sort of factor. Just that he was always extremely angry.

re: #581 gwangung

I think that’s a little disingenuous, given the rather visible signs of their religion.

That’s illogical, for it would automatically make any crime against any person with visible signs of being a minority a hate crime.

If he were hostile only to this family, that would be probative, but as he was hostile to everybody, it can’t, by itself, prove much. Someone would interpret it as religion-based hostility, someone else in a different way. As you write:

minorities, as a survival trait, cannot afford to rule it out).

- this explains why such an interpretation came up. In a world full of folks with anti-Muslim sentiments it was plausible for them to do so. But right now we know a bit more. For example, that he didn’t exhibit the typical anti-Muslim behavior online, going as far as to defend the Muslims during the Park51 brouhaha. That’s not a typical redneck Islamophobe behavior and this also should be taken into account, together with the lack of evidence that the topic of religion came up during altercations.

Note that I’m formulating very carefully here: I’m not excluding a possible ideological motive. I’m saying that so far there is no evidence for it.

As you got closer to the lake where we rented our fishing cabin the signs changed from a moose walking to a moose, head down, charging. 596 Mattand  Feb 12, 2015 11:18:33am

re: #533 Blind Frog Belly White

I think the inherit idea of atheists falling into the No True Scotsman fallacy is always a problem. Of course, the few atheists I know are smart enough to know that rationality isn’t a vaccine against making bad choices, but there’s people out there who aren’t.

*COUGH* Bill Maher Sam Harris *COUGH*

As for the issue of tribalism: not sure where I am on that. I see the point of the Atheism Plus crowd: being an atheist can be more than just sleeping in on Sundays. Exposing and fighting against the misogyny and bigotry problems within the atheist ranks demonstrates that.

I also get where you’re coming on that. To twist a cliché around, declaring I don’t collect stamps should not force membership in the non-stamp collecting community on me.

I can’t blame commies for kicking the ROC’s ass as an organization. For example, it was previously a part of a repressive state which severely limited religious freedom (e.g. atheism was prohibited), so as an org it was complicit in this. The organization was hardly better than the Bolsheviks. That’s not what we’re talking about. We’re talking about personal repression for belief.
