Did Chris Christie Block a Casino Deal to Help Sheldon Adelson?

Hunter Walker of Business Insider has a fascinating story today on reports that Gov. Chris Christie may have interfered with a deal to bring a major online gambling company to New Jersey, to benefit right wing gambling mogul Sheldon Adelson: Christie Accused of Blocking Casino Deal for Adelson.

The company in question is PokerStars, which runs one of the world’s most popular online poker sites. In July 2013, PokerStars announced a partnership with Atlantic City’s Resorts Casino Hotel. PokerStars planned to open a $10 million poker room at the casino. This would have allowed PokerStars to build its brand with live poker tournaments and other events. However, the company has been unable to obtain a gaming license in New Jersey. State Sen. Raymond Lesniak, a Democrat who sponsored the bill that legalized online gambling in the state, blamed the company’s inability to get licensed on Christie.

“Christie put a stop to it,” said Lesniak. “With a high degree of confidence it’s apparent that’s exactly what has happened.”

Bob McDevitt, the president of Unite Here Local 54, the union that represents Atlantic City’s casino workers, told Business Insider he believes the PokerStars license is being tied up by Christie.

“My impression was that PokerStars should have been already up and operating long before this point,” McDevitt said. “My understanding is that it was the attorney general’s office and the governor who are holding up the approvals.”

The office of New Jersey Attorney General John Jay Hoffman did not respond to a request for comment on this story.

Christie’s Shenanigans. He’s full of them.

If Adelson is so shrewd, why doesn’t he just buy some online gambling operations for himself?

Probably because he would not be able to guarantee market share, and they’d adversely affect the bottom line at his bricks-and-mortar casinos. Now he’s a big fish in a pond of limited size. Online, he’d be just another fish.

Christie’s office told Business Insider it is “nonsensical” to say he interfered with the deal, which a local union leader claimed would bring about 1,000 desperately needed jobs to the troubled Garden State gambling destination.

They’ll just have to get jobs building restraining crates for pregnant pigs.

Did Christie block a casino deal in favor of Adelson?

The governor responds: “I’m going to punt on that one, as well as raise you $2000.”

11 Charles Johnson  Feb 12, 2015 5:43:33pm
Christie’s ties to the casino mogul made headlines last week after The New York Times revealed Adelson had lent the governor his private plane for a 2012 trip to the Middle East. Adelson donated more than $3.5 million to the Republican Governors Association while it was chaired by Christie.

The governor’s office defended Christie’s flight on Adelson’s plane by saying regulations allow him to accept gifts from personal friends. Nevertheless, Democratic opponents of the governor have suggested his acceptance of gifts and RGA donations from the casino mogul raises ethical questions.

That is, if there was one.

I’ve sometimes imagined if I were the god of all creation (or if I was hearing voices in my head about how the world was created), how i would explain the world to my followers. And the creation story in the Bible would be a very simplistic explanation - leaving a whole lot out - that I might tell people who are more interested in finding shelter, a meal, and not getting killed by the neighbors. Kind of in the same way I didn’t teach my children about negative numbers when we first started covering subtraction.

Dropping off for a bit—up to 10 days. We’re taking the grandkid to see his uncle and Disney World, don’t know if I’ll bother with a laptop.

He’s the 4 yr old who was booted from a couple daycares because his mother refused to put him on drugs. She lucked into a great pediatrician who proposed his problem was sleep apnea from monster tonsil issues. The doc seems to be right—about 80% of his behavior crap has resolved in the last month or so. The kid freaked at naptime and bedtime because he was terrified of going to sleep.

Glad to hear there seems to have been a good diagnosis in this case. The standard ADHD/whatever drugs wouldn’t do any good at all for tonsil issues.

98 goddamnedfrank  Feb 12, 2015 7:17:54pm

Conservative comedy:

See, comedy functions through the subversion of our expectations. For example, @BeccaJLower’s expectation that @ChuckCJohnson might react to her obvious pathos and plea for support with a modicum of empathy. The fact that he doesn’t is actually kind of funny. Unintentionally funny, and dark, and sad all at the same time, but still a little bit funny. And yes, I kind of feel bad for saying so, but it’s true.

This is why conservative “comedy” generally doesn’t work. Conservatives don’t like having their expectations subverted, instead they want to biases affirmed. That’s why conservative comedy almost invariably comes off as either stilted, ham-fisted or just plain mean. When conservatives try to be funny there’s almost never any meaningful insight into the human condition, any empathy or observational conflict between what we expect and what we get.
