President Obama Speaks on Cybersecurity and Consumer Protection

So expect TCOT to be all about government spying and how consumer protection is just needless government regulation and the free market fixes everything for the next couple of hours

Snarky tweet gets teen fired before even starting job

A Texas boss spotted a soon-to-be employee complaining on Twitter about her new job and fired her before she even started the first day.

“Ew I start this f*** a** job tomorrow,” Twitter user @cellla_ tweeted last week. She was set to start the new gig at Jet’s Pizzeria the next day, outlets say.

And she wasn’t embarrassed about any of it…

23 Justanotherhuman  Feb 13, 2015 12:00:27pm

The Munchkin’s class had a little Valentine’s party and there was a list on the wall of which other student they considered their best. He definitely picked the one he told me about the other night. She’s a little beauty who wears her hair natural and long, and he’s all agog. Teacher told me they sit together on the floor, even though they’re at different tables. It’s looooove! So sweet. : )

The girl has gained thousands of twitter followers and prompted a viral debate with commenters taking sides with @cella_ or the manager. Both of their original tweets have been deleted.

Sometimes Twitter is just TOO stupid. The manager’s response didn’t do Jet’s any favors either—it wasn’t professional at all. Idiots, both of them.

Just finished registering my kids to play baseball this spring. They play in a leauge under the Cal Ripken Division instead of the Little Leauge designation. It of course got me thiniking of Jackie Robinson West. I went and tried to find thier boundaries for the leauge and could not. So I searched around on the Little Leauge website and found the statement from the organization.

Statement on Jackie Robinson West

The way that I read some of the passages, it was someone from a neighboring Little League district that reported initially, it was investigated and the kids were determined eligible by the boundary map that was in place. Further investigation showed that it wasn’t just Jackie Robinson West but multiple leagues in that District that had faults. Also, the District Administrator had provided falsified documents ect.

The way that some are presenting this story is it’s just Jackie Robinson West. MLB Pitcher Mark Mulder claimed that JRW cheated 25 years ago when he played Little League. And while I don’t absolve JRW in any wrongdoing, I assert that this is a structural issue of the Little League Association. Especially as it seems, the kids on the team were determined to be eligible after one inquiry. The fact that it did not get to the bottom of the story is on the organization as much as it is the adults who caused the problem.

They’re cannon fodder, so to speak. I had an Iranian friend who fought in the Iran-Iraq war and he told me how the powers that be got them all emotionally pumped up on religion + patriotism + honor (especially effective with young men) and then sent them out to do the dirty work—e.g. he (and others who were there) told me they used people to clear the mine fields. They told them to march on out there because martyrdom & paradise was waiting or whatever, and off they went.

But yesterday SMOTI was claiming that the Marine base was being overrun by the ISIL and there was nothing the President could do to stop it.

Not sure what the tactical situation is there today, but it seems that they repulsed the attack easily and with support of the Iraqi military (the Marines were advisers to Iraqi military for training purposes). No casualties among Marines or Iraqi military suggests a combination of luck and bad tactics by the ISIL thugs.

Rep. Peter King (R-NY) on Wednesday accused President Barack Obama of using his final years in office to “get back at Israel” as part of an effort to fulfill “all of his liberal fantasies,”

King also condemned Democratic lawmakers who have threatened to boycott Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s scheduled speech before Congress in early March.

…”To boycott our closest ally… to be turning our back on the leader of the only democracy in the region and the country which has always stood with us, it’s unforgivable,” King said.

95 Aunty Entity Dragon  Feb 13, 2015 1:13:20pm

I just got back from the hospital. Significant Other Dragon came from class last night and saw the flashing lights of a cop car in the neighbrhood…she had some sort of seizure.

By the time she was able to walk in the door, she still couldn’t speak, and had speech delays and slurred words for a couple of hours after.

She was admitted from the ER aroound 5 this morning. Nothing on the CT scan and nothing on the MRI, but was have to wait until tomorrow morning at the soonest to get the EEG results, and they are not letting her go. They also blocked her driver’s liscense for the time being.

We could really use a break from medical emergencies.

That being said, thank God for Obama care.

The only passage in the body of the Constitution as drafted in 1787 that references religion at all is the paragraph in Article VI that makes clear that “no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office.” This profoundly progressive phrase, written in an era when every other constitutional government around the world featured an official state religion, was drafted by none other than Charles Pinckney.

After the Constitution was drafted, Pinckney was tasked with taking it before the South Carolina legislature for that state’s ratification debate. During the debate, he was asked by one of the legislators about that exact Article VI paragraph, and more exactly about whether it would mean that “a Muslim could run for office in these United States?” Pinckney’s answer? “Yes, it does, and I hope to live to see it happen.” His words are inspiring, and a challenge to those who say they believe in inclusion today. How many white, Christian elected officials today would say “I hope to see more Muslim Americans in elected office” the way Charles Pinckney did?

Yeah, but only if you’re going for a philosophy degree

An old academia joke:

Three candidates, a physicist, mathematician and a philosopher, are looking for a faculty position at a cash-strapped university and are asked how they could deal with limited resources.

Physicist: I need lab equipment, which is unfortunately rather expensive.

Mathematician: All I need are pencils, paper and a garbage can.

Philosopher: I wouldn’t need the garbage can.

Despite my fondness for this joke, I respect most philosophy.
