Busted: Rand Paul Lies Twice in One Day That He Has a Biology Degree

Embellishment (otherwise known as lying)
Politics • Views: 33,097

At the Washington Post, Glenn Kessler catches Rand Paul lying outright about his nonexistent biology degree.

The Facts

Paul mentioned his alleged degree at the conference not once, but twice. First, in an exchange with TechCrunch founder Michael Arrington, Paul said:

Arrington: “Let’s talk about economics because maybe you can actually explain this to me. I have an econ degree which means I know just enough not to understand any of what our government is [inaudible]”

Paul: “Mine’s in biology and English so this is going to be a great conversation.”

Then, later in the conversation, expounding on what he considered the virtues of Bitcoin, Paul said:

“This is just me. I have a biology degree, okay? But with Bitcoin my concern always was whether or not something has real value. So I could imagine a kind of coin that was exchangeable. This gets back to the whole idea, does money have to be exchangeable for something to be of value?”

The interesting thing about these references is that previously Paul’s staff has blamed the media for misunderstanding his unusual educational background.

The right wing libertarian Senator actually has a medical degree from Duke University, but never graduated with any kind of degree from Baylor University. When asked about this falsehood, Sen. Paul’s office replied that a medical degree and a biology degree are the same thing.

“It is unfair to give Senator Paul 3 Pinocchios because a M.D. Degree is the study of biomedical sciences according to the Duke University School of Medicine. In other words, a M.D. is a biology degree. Merriam-Webster defines biology as ‘a branch of knowledge that deals with living organisms and vital processes.’ Dr. Paul never said he had an undergraduate degree in biology, and it is accurate for him to say that he has a biology degree. You are making inferences from his statement that are unwarranted. It is common knowledge that the study of medicine is the study of human biology, and a MD has a doctorate degree in one area of study of the science of biology.”

Would you be surprised to learn that this is simply not true?

Degrees are just another government imposed regulation. The Free Market should be the only judge.

Wait a sec, Rand Paul was admitted to med school without an undergrad degree(I checked Wikipedia and it appears to indeed be the case)? I’ve never heard of that happening, very odd.

I was pre-med for a very unhappy year and change in college and never heard of that happening. Daddy Paul was a Congresscriter then, so maybe.

Here’s that article:

“At the time he was admitted to our medical school, Duke sometimes did admit students of exceptional abilities. Other professional schools have done that,” said Schoenfeld, noting that Duke now requires its medical students to have bachelor’s degrees.

One of the major assessment criteria we used to determine acceptance for our graduate programs was the likelihood of a student’s interest and ability to go the distance to complete the program. A student who couldn’t even complete a bachelor’s degree would not have met that criteria, especially a privileged kid who had no reason for that failure.

23 Justanotherhuman  Feb 13, 2015 2:56:08pm

UNC School of Medicine requires a bachelors degree, barring extraordinary circumstances (and i don’t think that means being Ron Paul’s son.

“Barring extraordinary circumstances, a Bachelor’s degree is required for admission and, in fact, all students in recent years have had a Bachelor’s degree, and or a graduate degree.”

med.unc.edu

Duke doesn’t even mention a degree.

I mentioned this downstairs earlier today, but Rand never believed that rules apply to him:

Rand Paul asks Kentucky GOP leaders for a presidential caucus in 2016

Read more here: kentucky.com

Requesting help to avoid a “costly and time-consuming legal challenge,” U.S. Sen. Rand Paul is asking members of the Republican Party of Kentucky to create a presidential caucus in 2016 that would happen well ahead of the May primary election.

In a letter dated Feb. 9, Paul told GOP leaders that an earlier presidential preference vote would give Kentuckians “more leverage to be relevant” in the wide-open competition for the Republican presidential nomination.

And it could help him win that nomination, he said.

“You, as a member of the Kentucky Republican Central Committee, will be the one to decide if you want to help me get an equal chance at the nomination,” Paul wrote.

The letter went out to hundreds of Kentucky Republicans ahead of the party’s 54-member executive committee meeting March 7 in Bowling Green, where Paul will pitch the caucus idea to members for a vote.

Kentucky law prevents a candidate from appearing on the same ballot twice, and Paul and his allies have endeavored for more than a year to change the law or find a loophole that would allow him to run for the White House and re-election to his Senate seat at the same time in 2016.

Paul’s supporters also maintain that the law is unconstitutional, suggesting it could be challenged in federal court.

So, to recap:
* Kentucky law is unfair to him.
* The law should be changed only for him (but he’s not asking for special treatment…oh no, he IS NOT).
* And those pesky Kentucky Republican voters? Screw them, they don’t need to bother with having an actual vote.

*spit*

This is what Tim Cook said, that The Hill is trying to picture as “taking a shot at Obama:”

“Too many people do not feel free to practice their religion or practice their opinion or love who they choose,” said Cook, who is gay. “Or love who they choose.”

“In a world where that information can make the difference between life and death,” he continued, “if those of us in positions of responsibility fail to do everything in our power to protect the right of privacy, we risk something far more valuable than money. We risk our way of life.”

OK, so, I will always be relieved when I see a diploma from UNC, then.

Also, not so strange that he set up his own “board” of ophthalmology. He probably couldn’t pass the test at the ABOP.

abop.org

“Certification is granted to ophthalmologists who meet a series of accredited medical training requirements in ophthalmology, sign a practice pledge indicating their intent to practice with compassion, integrity and respect for human dignity, and complete an intensive evaluation process which includes two examinations: a Written Qualifying Examination (WQE) and an Oral Examination.

“Physicians who meet all of the requirements for initial certification become diplomates of the Board and earn a certificate valid for a period of 10 years. Since the early 1990s, all Diplomates have been required to actively maintain their certificate through a lifelong learning and practice improvement process currently known as Maintenance of Certification in order to extend the validity of that certificate .”

Also, not so strange that he set up his own “board” of ophthalmology. He probably couldn’t pass the test at the ABOP.

His excuse was that he thought the ABOP test requirements were unfair:

Like his father Ron, Sen. Paul is a doctor—the older Paul is an OB/GYN, the younger an ophthalmologist. Back in the 1990s, he ran afoul of the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO), the certifying organization for his specialty. As reported in The Washington Post, Paul objected to a rule change by the board that exempted ophthalmologists who had been certified before 1992 from having to recertify every 10 years. Having been certified after that date, he found the rule change unfair. In protest, he founded the now-defunct National Ophthalmology Board, and continued to describe himself as “board-certified” with its imprimatur.

No, he was in the ABOP before. He left over a disagreement with them over re-certification requirements. I won’t get into the details, but it seems he was upset younger docs had to retake the test every few years while older ones got grandfathered into the old “certified for life” way.

HA! Forget paying your taxes with pennies, this guy wins:

MOSCOW, Russia - A fed-up farmer kicked up a stink — and made clear his views on the banking system — by repaying a loan with the equivalent value in manure.

Alexander Bakshayev, 42, dumped a cartload of animal dung on the front steps of the bank in western Siberia, local media said Friday.

The manure was worth 40,000 rubles ($610) — the exact amount he owed the bank, Bakshayev told sibkray.ru.

He decorated the heap with miniature gallows and posters saying “Down with credit slavery” and “Bankers are the enemies of the people,” according to news site pro-sibir.org.

“The whole of Russia somehow owes something now to these lickspittle good-for-nothing bankers with nothing to do,” Bakshayev was quoted as saying.

As a farmer, I approve.

“The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said in a statement Friday a 19-year-old Canadian man and a 23-year-old woman from Geneva, Illinois had access to firearms and intended “to go to a public venue in the Halifax region on February 14th with a goal of opening fire to kill citizens, and then themselves.”

“A senior government official said it is not terror related. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.”

Of course he’s lying. The Muslim community in the Raleigh area has actually worked with law enforcement. Emphasis mine:

While the shooting occurred in the federal Middle District of North Carolina, Thomas Walker - US Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina - which includes Raleigh - said he’s taking a hard look at the case.

Our Muslim Community has been an invaluable partner. They should know that the federal government is working closely with local authorities to determine why this occurred,” he told ABC11. […]

The same Thomas Walker:

Thomas Walker, the chief U.S. prosecutor from the Eastern District, also is interested in the shooting. In recent years, his office has gotten to know many in the Muslim community while prosecuting high-profile terror cases from Wake and Johnston counties.

“The Muslim community has been good partners with law enforcement on a variety of fronts,” Walker said Wednesday afternoon. “It’s vitally important that their concerns not be ignored. We think it’s appropriate to closely monitor the investigation to determine any motivation in this case.” […]

Back in the 70s and 80, medical school would take people who hadn’t graduated yet after three years if they met all the admission criteria (classes) and did well on the MCATS.

I got in after 3 years because i got 1 year’s worth of college credit via the CLEP test. I had to squeeze 4 years of a chemistry major into three (two actually, because my counsellor would n’t me take into chemistry my first quarter).

A classmate of mine took the MCAT in her second year and did well enough she got into the University of MIchigan medical school after three years.

This was back in the days when they were trying to speed up medical education. U of M also had a six year program (combined degree).

The way the NFL is organized (as a trade association) each of the franchises sees the profits, not the NFL. The league profits are split among the 32 teams. TV deals, jerseys and other gear is split among the 32 teams.

The individual teams can keep some of the revenues generated in their own stadiums though, which is why they try to do luxury boxes and other revenue generators.

Individual teams see their revenues taxed, but the league itself is not.

Man, Instapundit’s twitter feed is rank with Stacy McCain MRA ranting.

I never understood the mindset of the MRA. I’ve suffered plenty of rejection, even succumbed to the occasional “nice guys finish last” rant, but in the end, continued rejection generally adds up to one thing - it’s not them, it’s YOU. Figure out what’s broken and fix it, don’t point the blame elsewhere.

I know this is off the main point but that sign is just plain wrong. It is perfectly fine to be religious in public, as long as you aren’t harming others and the government isn’t funding it. It is perfectly fine also to teach your children your religion as long as you accept their choice if they later chose to not continue to practice it. And those who have faith surely must “think with” that faith, or else it means nothing.

The only point I agree with is the third one, since writing laws to press a religious (or anti-religious) view upon others violates the 1st Amendment.

Again, sorry of the tangent, but I needed to say that. BBIAB

Oh I think that would be WAY too high. At that exchange rate, a single tweet could have a retail value of $1.40. That’s orders of magnitude excessive. I’m thinking that fair market value would be in the small fractions of a cent per tweet range. (and that’s on a per-tweet basis, not per follower).

I think so, but there’s a really nasty, disturbing hate underneath it.

I followed Laurie Penny on twitter because I liked an article of hers that I read a while back about women characters in the movies. So, when gamer gate kicked off, of course she’s friends with several of the women who were targeted… She would re-post some of the hateful shit these ladies get on a daily basis, and then not too long ago I saw one of these haters had copied RSM on a tweet… I was like, what the F is that neo-confederate toolbag doing, reading Laurie Penny??

Turns out he’s grifting onto anti-feminism as some kind of anti-Marxist / anti-“Totalitarian” thing. Apparently, having a vagina and an opinion, especially the opinion that capitalism kind of sucks and rape is bad, means you’re evil, evil, evil.

So when you scroll through his timeline and he’s calling out feminist writers as “Marxists”, and then a few posts later throws up a picture of Nguyen Ngoc Loan shooting a VC prisoner in the head with a caption that “he knew how to deal with Marxists” - I’m paraphrasing, but it’s up there to see still…

He’s just a sick piece of shit. Really sick. But it’s a different kind of sick from the haters who can’t get dates because they’re assholes. This is the political kind of hate.

McCain has latched onto the “men’s rights” movement and #GamerGate because he knows a good hateful scam when he sees one.

How about you and Chuck form a “pal’s regiment” and head over there, representative?

Maybe take the rest of the tough-talkers and the chairborne with you.

GO TEAM VENTURE NORRIS!

The number of conservative conjobs flocking to that community is amusingly similar to a gold rush.

A rich new vein of resentment to mine.

He’s similar to upChuck that way. He finds a manure pile and jumps in!

…Now I have this strange image of RSM and Chuck C. coming together like lions to form a Voltron that looks like Ted Cruz.

GO TEAM VENTURE NORRIS!

A Rusty Venture is an erotic act that can only occur while invading Iraq with Chuck Norris.

Wait…if you saw something like that, wouldn’t you need acid to attempt to make sense of it?

Oh no, this is all natural.

Or maybe it’s like Captain Planet…
Earth: floor poop: Chuck C
Fire: cheap bourbon: RSM
Air: hot air: Glenn Beck
Water: ?
Heart: ?

Together they form… Captain Stupid? Shit, I dunno. I’m not even drunk and my mind is already going all squirrely, man. o_O

re: #148 lawhawk

The way the NFL is organized (as a trade association) each of the franchises sees the profits, not the NFL. The league profits are split among the 32 teams. TV deals, jerseys and other gear is split among the 32 teams.

The individual teams can keep some of the revenues generated in their own stadiums though, which is why they try to do luxury boxes and other revenue generators.

Individual teams see their revenues taxed, but the league itself is not.

The NFL executive office, 345 Park Ave, operates off of income from NFL playoff games & the Super Bowl.

The owners (partnership) do not share in revenues from playoff games or Super Bowl.

Playoff team members & invested team personnel e.g. equipment manager(s), team security, etc, get bonuses from team participation (win or lose - winners get higher bonus) in playoff games and Super Bowl.

In addition to regular season TV. team owners get their “game seat revenue” only from pre & regular season games.

(Thus the push by some owners for more regular season games)

Well, I’m going to go to read for while and then go to bed. You all be good, and there is some leftover pizza in the fridge if you get hungry.

re: #157 #FergusonFireside

Personal, but what the hell. I just pulled the trigger on my move back East. Former boss who has all the contacts. Called him, he says the ATL is in my future. Resume & all that shit tomorrow.

Big deal. Really easy to stay in your day in day out existence. Hard to change. But Imma going to try.

And now, out for a burger. Thanks for the listening LGF.

Good on you.

ATL is a good city. It doesn’t pay a whole lot of attention to what the rest of Georgia does.

Even tho I’ve had family living in the ATL area for the past 90 years, I maintain that no-one really lives in ATL, everyone is just passing thru.
