I don’t think I am going to be able to deal with the smug self-congratulatory bullshit quotient of this 3.5 hours of Saturday Night Live anniversary show, especially as I haven’t had more than a laugh or two from the show for the last 20+ years…outside of Tina Fey’s Sarah Palin, of course.

I stuck with them through three peaks and a couple of really deep troughs, but they lost me about the turn of the century. Just a generation thing, I guess.

Freep post (the second along this line today).

North Carolina’s ISIS Beachhead: Slain Sisters & Father’s Terror Connections. Media Blackout.

What is it with these people attacking bereaved parents (compare Sandy Hook)? They are something like human hyenas (though hyenas are only trying to feed themselves), always on the lookout for the vulnerable, the easiest targets to yield the most pain. It fits nicely with their “nuke Mecca” and “let ‘em die” memes and their enthusiastic support for torture.
It is probably the most shameful episode of my life that I ever publicly associated myself with the rightwing.

WTFITS?

Bibi Ad Shows ISIS Asking Directions to Jerusalem

In the latest Likud ad for the upcoming Israeli elections, a group of ISIS terrorists (played by actors, of course) are seen asking for directions to Jerusalem. Likud is led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Elections there are a month away.

The ad shows the group of terrorists pulling up to a random Israeli to ask how to get to Jerusalem. “Take left,” they’re told.

The screen goes dark and Hebrew words appear as gun shots can be heard. “The left will surrender to terror,” the text on the screen reads.

Needless to say, the gang would have to make its way across Jordan without being shot or hanged first, so the Jordanians are being defamed here too.
Expect some clones of this to start appearing in American political advertising later this year.

Apparently conservatives don’t believe in the transitive property of theft. If I steal something, like say a bicycle or a human being’s freedom, and then sell it, the person who purchases from me is totally absolved of all wrongdoing in the transaction, they now own it legally free and clear. They’re then free to take whatever it is I sold them, again whether inanimate object or a person with wants and dreams, and ride them all day long totally free from worry.

If it’s a human being they bought, they’re free to breed them like cattle too, and to keep or sell their offspring, in perpetuity, because liberty and freedom. There is no such statist crime as receiving stolen goods or perpetuating slavery in conservative land, that’s just like normal market forces at play or something.

You really can’t fix stupid. Sure, many Africans did sell other Africans into slavery. But it wasn’t Africans who kept slavery going for three centuries and it sure as hell wasn’t Africans that fought any restrictions on slavery at the Constitutional Convention and it definitely wasn’t Africans who threw a fit because Lincoln became president and seceded from the Union illegally.

It was pretty obvious what he meant. As I said, yeah it’s true that Africans did sell other Africans into slavery but as I said, it wasn’t Africans that fought any attempts by this country’s government to abolish. John C. Calhoun? Not an African. The fireburners? No Africans among them. And as much as they love to claim that Christianity “ended” slavery, they ignore the fact that the Southern Baptists were founded for the explicit purpose of seeing slavery as moral. Before the 1960’s the Baptists weren’t regional at all.

I think I can imagine the GOP riff on this:

A ragged smoke-belching old suburban pulls up to an intersection. In the front is a stereotyped “Ill-eagle” couple; fat, unkempt, the man is drinking a beer. In the back are 8 or 10 wheezing, coughing, measle-pocked kids The man asks a concerned looking Anglo the way to the local elementary school, triumphantly waving a thick sheaf of papers as he does so. “Got our enrollment right here!”
The screen fades to black with the caption “Democrats want this. Do you?”

Netanyahu urges Jews to ‘move to Israel’

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded to the attack on Copenhagen’s main synagogue by urging European Jews to move to Israel.

Mr Netanyahu said Israel was preparing and calling for the absorption of mass immigration from Europe.

However Denmark’s small but vibrant Jewish community rebuffed the call to emigrate.

“We appreciate the invitation, but we are Danish citizens, this is our country,” Dan Rosenberg Asmussen, chairman of the Jewish Society in Denmark, said.

“I feel just as safe on the streets today as I did the day before yesterday,” Jewish community member Bent Bograd said, as he laid flowers at the synagogue.

“We can’t do anything about it, and it’s a risk that exists.” […]

The reason there are no bicycles in zombie films is because the second you put a motherfucker on a bike they start to smile. And you just can’t have that shit in a film where your heroes are struggling for survival in a crumbling dystopian apocalyptic hellscape dealing with the bleak pointlessness of the modern human condition. Bicycles are intrinsically hopeful things, and except for the very end zombie movies are generally all about a setting of hopelessness and despair.

It’s not actually warmongering, Stanley. Regardless of which way the election goes, Israel is not going to move against ISIS unless those asshole make the mistake of attacking Israel first, a mistake they have so far refrained from making.

But Israel is not really capable of fighting a war of occupation in Syria, and Netanyahu knows this. So while he is dramatizing and sensationalizing the ISIS threat, he is not actually seeking a war with the “Islamic State”.

There was a Justin Timberlake show a few years back where SNL did an elaborate 5 Timer Host Club sketch wherein JT achieved that milestone. They had cameos from other hosts who were five timers.

True. However, it’s not in force yet because central processing forgot to attach this first.

Didn’t you get the memo?

Good luck Sleuth!

It is odd how the cold front high pressure is right on I-70 and it seems to be keeping the snow south of the typical patterns. Weird.

So, they are saying Columbus is right on the edge of snow by just a bit. Who the heck knows, it could still slide north and whack us too.

I caught him in 1988 supporting Bob Dylan at UC Berkeley’s Greek Theatre. Neil Young sat in (or more correctly stood) for several numbers. A fun show which coulda been longer. Neil didn’t want to stop.

Why is it snowing where it doesn’t need to snow? It needs to snow in the mountain ranges of the west coast something fierce. Mt. Baker, Washington closing for a time due to rain in February is a mega-bummer. darthstar can attest to the miserable skiing in California I’m sure. Hell, here in the north-central mountains of Colorado a paltry foot of snow has fallen in the month of February, it was less than that for the whole month of January.

Might have to sacrifice an old pair of skis to a raging pallet fire.

The FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in Vail/Beaver Creek, CO have wrapped up. It was a crazy two weeks. I’ve never seen so many people descend upon this valley. The ski races were very cool to see up close. I watched the Men’s Super G halfway down the course. The men were going over 60 m.p.h. where I was watching.

I also watched the Women’s Giant Slalom, from the same spot above. What was striking was how their hips got so goddamned close to the snow, just insane angles. It’s a trip to watch in person.

Skiing’s most prestigious competition outside the Olympics has ended. It was pretty neat. I’m glad it’s over. The last two weeks I’ve had to add an hour to my commute because of lack of parking, congestion, etc. That ends tomorrow. YAY!

Fall of Prospero

The Fall of Prospero, also referred to as the Scouring of Prospero, the Burning of Prospero and the Battle of Prospero, was the name given by later Imperial scholars to the sanctioned Imperial military reprisal against the Thousand Sons Legion of Space Marines’ homeworld of Prospero at the start of the Horus Heresy in the early 31st Millennium. The action was carried out by the Space Wolves Legion and elements of the Legio Custodes and the Sisters of Silence as a punishment for the Thousand Sons’ flagrant violation of the Emperor of Mankind’s edicts against the use of psychic powers and sorcery made at the Council of Nikaea.

Seriously speaking, filming a group of people having a conversation on bicycles while they’re carrying weapons is a lot harder than filming them walking around carrying weapons and anguishing over their next move.

Plus, there’s no drama if a zombie approaches the Hero, and the Hero escapes by jumping on his bike and pedaling away as fast as possible.

Now, if the zombies were on bikes, too, it might be more interesting.

Zombie movies rely on people doing stupid things.

Look at the Dawn of the Dead remake. A bunch of survivors in a mall across the street from a guy who is trapped in a gun store and is an expert sniper. If they were smart, they could have spent every day culling zombies to the point they could arrange a quick expedition to join up with the guy. Instead, they piss around for weeks while the guy is starving, only to launch a half-assed rescue which gets most of them killed and end up on the run.

It still gets me when soldiers in zombie movies say “THEY’RE NOT GOING DOWN” and blaze away all their ammo on full auto. The zombie genre is firmly embedded in pop culture. The decision to quit wasting ammo on full auto and switch to head shots would kick in after the first couple shots.

I do admit that I’ve probably over thought this topic.

Egypt says it has bombed Islamic State targets in Libya, hours after the group published video showing the apparent beheadings of 21 Egyptian Christians.

Last night, I decided to indulge in mindless entertainment and watched action movies. Mission to Mars was on, and took me nearly half the film to remember I had seen it before and hated it. It was the slow-as-molasses response the crew had to two “life threatening” 1-cm size leaks in the hull that reminded me how uncommonly silly it is. Four supposedly trained people — one without a helmet — take close to 10 agonizingly slow minutes to locate and plug two leaks that could not possibly have depleted the cabin pressure as fast as depicted in the movie.

Rather than fumble about finding them, a real crew would have all followed protocol, suited up, shut off the air supply and gone about about fixing the leaks without all the “OMG we’re gonna die” drama.

Well, only Gary Sinise’s character McConnell would have died, because he said “there was no time” to put on his helmet, despite their taking 10 long minutes to plug the holes.

Simple technical details like that bug the hell out of me. And it was only just one of many. But, it’s a Brian dePalma film and not one of his best, so it has some redeeming moments.

Either the leaks are big enough that you’ve got only minutes to fix them or you’ll die—in which case they’ll cause a hell of a draft, and should be easy to find by tossing a little chaff in the air—or they’re not—in which case you have plenty of time.

Even the Salyut 1 crew would have survived if the valve that stuck open wasn’t inaccessible under the center couch.

5 Problems in Movies You Only Notice If You’re Old

#3. Self-Journeying Protagonists Are Dicks

Movies are good at featuring protagonists who throw aside their normal lives to find adventure … and themselves. The 1977 film Close Encounters of the Third Kind is probably the most extreme example of this plot: in this movie, a young suburban father ends up leaving behind his earthly family to go travel the universe with aliens, after which no one at all is impressed with the neighbor’s really enlightening backpacking trip to India.

How It Changes

Director Steven Spielberg now regrets Close Encounters’ ending, calling the decision to have the protagonist leave his family a “privilege of youth.” Lead actor Richard Dreyfuss doesn’t have a better opinion:

Eh, watching Paul McCartney was painful. I watched about 45 min or so of the show with my grandson and a lot of it was painful. People, please—leave us with memories when you were at your best—we’re not particularly interested in how your career is aging.

I’ve never figured out why people like Miley Cyrus and other pop figures are allowed on this show, either. In 1975, i was 34 yrs old—so I remember its genesis and real genius (many of the originals were Second City alumni), and i think it really did lose its mojo by the time I turned 40. Even the real talent later couldn’t save the writing.

He’s lucky she shot him and not herself. But he secured neither his child nor his gun, and thus merits punishment for what happened.

And he wasn’t a responsible gun owner, either. ‘Responsible’ by definition means you take precautions to prevent this sort of thing.

That’s the maximum intellectual age they can achieve.

At the risk of damaging any rep I have here, I absolutely agree that 13-14 is the mental age at which supremacists of any type assume their intellectual peak. I am ashamed to say that I was a big admirer of the Nazis when I was in my first year of high school. I can’t say what precipitated this fascination, I certainly didn’t understand the subtext of anti-semitism and had never met a Jew. I am very lucky though that I had observant parents who cared for me who explained in detail (my father, over a long-distance call from Mawson Station, Antarctica, was most effective) how national socialism was a poison.
I have since determined that the only minds susceptible to such ideas are in the infancy of their intellectual awakening but still replete with all the childish desires to blame others for their shortcomings.
I consider it my true political awakening, having cast off those weird adolescent shackles of fascist fantasy. And yet, ironically, I see in my parents’ generation, a tendency towards severe racism encouraged by conservative fearmongering.
Please don’t think less of me.

The gist of the RWNJ response to the Egyptian air strikes against ISIS seems to be that strong leaders like Egypt’s Sisi and Jordan’s Abdullah are willing to take action while President Obama sits on his hands or actively encourages the terrorists.

These people are beyond stupid. The US has in fact conducted more than 600 air strikes against ISIS in Iraq and Syria plus an unknown but possibly substantial number of special forces ground operations. Beyond this, we are bankrolling Iraqi government and Kurdish efforts against ISIS and providing substantial logistical support to the participating allies. It is not as though any of this is a secret and there is no doubt at all about the extreme butthurt the head-choppers feel over the US actions.

Good morning Lizards. was 2 F this morning and now up to a balmy 9 F here in an overcast Center City Philadelphia. Supposed to warm up further and then snow overnight. Plus maybe a bit more snow before it gets cold again. There is also a stiff breeze blowing to make walking about outside a little bit more painful.

Last night’s semi-experimental meal (producing left-overs for the next three days) was assembling pasta and other ingredients:
a) Loose hot italian sausage was browned in olive oil along with fresh ground black pepper and a finely minced white onion.

b) Mixed in ~1 lb al dente cooked ziti and tossed it a bit to coat the ziti so it wouldn’t stick together.

c) Sauce was a simple red sauce: Large can of crushed tomatoes; medium can of diced tomatoes; small can of tomato paste; minced garlic, salt, two sprigs of fresh rosemary, minced fresh oregano, and simmered for about 45 minutes.

Served with an arugula salad and a Cabernet savignon.

There’s chili in the slow cooker. I took some of the advice from the chili thread, used a cast iron pan to brown the meat, used jalapeno, cayenne & chili seasoning so we’ll see how it turns out.

I fixed cottage ham, green beans and potatoes in the crock pot yesterday and have enough for about 4-5 more meals.

McCartney’s problem was he should have done something he could hit with his older voice. That would not be “Maybe I’m Amazed.”

If anything his ego got in the way of reality…but then McCartney was pretty good at doing just that when he was younger.

In my opinion.

I’ve heard McCartney live a few times over the past few years, and I’ve been impressed with how well his voice has held up. But his voice was shot last night, he had no business attempting a song like Maybe I’m Amazed. I think he usually sounds better, but he had done a two hour show the night before.

If Umberto Eco was put into a 9/11 Truther thing, he must have been heavily edited indeed:

livemint.com

Eco is a semioticist who writes extensively about conspiracy theories, how they form, and why they form. His article on 9/11 Trutherism name-drops Hofstadter’s famous “The Paranoid Style in American Politics” and expounds on the reasons that people fall for such conspiracy hoaxes.

Also, Eco is very much anti-fascist. His political leanings are kind of academic and philosophical, but for the most part he spends his time expanding on Orwell’s themes of media and language manipulation, how they can be used to seize and hold power by fascists, and how to fight that. I recommend actually reading his “Ur-Fascism” article, which is fascinating.

(I’m probably doing my dead-thread trick again by now, but I like Eco and was kind of wondering how he got into a conversation about the pseudo-philosophical mumbo-jumbo of fascists.)

Why should “artists” get a pass? isn’t the paying audience, in a way, their employers?

For us lowlier types, we’re put out to pasture well before some of us have lost our skills—by our employers.

I don’t disagree. It is not so much about an artist getting a pass. They just need to realize whether they can still deliver, even if they do a song in a different range or phrasing. Paul should have done something he could have had better control of. Maybe I’m Amazed is a tough song to sing like the original.

I used Willie Nelson as an example. The dude just loves to go out and play if people will have him. He’s 81 or so now, if he stopped playing he’ll probably die from boredom.

As far as the SNL thing last night, I tried to keep in mind it was an anniversary show and there would be reminiscing, trying old bits they can’t do any longer, older folks having a good time, etc. It was not meant to be a new show. It was a party. I try to keep things in perspective.

And in a way…artists are different in that they can paint and write will into old age. With singers and dancers there are physical limitations, but that desire is still there and I can understand.

I’m 60 and still jamming and writing songs. I don’t play out, but I certainly love to play. Two of my Friday night buddies have packed it in. One is getting pretty tired and slowing way down, and he is younger than me.

No one wants to get old when you still feel like a teen. I guess that fits the “its an age old problem” and we all have to deal with it if we are lucky enough to be old.

And after that book…see you all later,

RIP Louis Jourdan.

The French actor Louis Jourdan, best known for his role in the multi-Oscar winning 1958 musical Gigi, has died in California aged 93.

Born in Marseilles, he began his career acting in French films before being lured to the US.

Often seen in roles that capitalised on his Gallic charm, he described himself as Hollywood’s “French cliche”.

His later years saw him play evil villains, including in the 1983 Bond film Octopussy.

Jourdan died at his home in Los Angeles, his official biographer Olivier Minne said.

I’ve seen McCartney perform elsewhere and he’s still capable of doing a decent job. I suspect fatigue or other factors affected the performance last night; he should probably have picked something less demanding to sing.

Paul Simon’s performance was the one I didn’t care for. Seemed like the poor keyboard player was really struggling trying to stay with Paul, who seemed to pay zero attention to the beat/phrasing.

Friday’s was one of the first “adult” shows I watched as a kid, and I loved it although most of it went over my head - I’m pretty sure I had no idea why “Gimme ganja” was so funny, but it was funny. I distinctly remember seeing King Crimson do a couple of songs and the strangeness of it freaked my young mind out. I think I was 9.

It’s why I’m driving a 5 spd, 13 yr old car, for the most part.

I’m thinking of costing out the cost of a contract with a local limo company or taxi when the time comes. (for weekly errands etc)

I have a feeling it would be cheaper than all the expenses that go with the purchase of a car.

I don’t drive as much as I used to and can often con friends into driving for the cost of a Starbucks.

Either that or I’ll have to move into the City where there is reliable public transportation.

Chris Rock was totally unfunny. I don’t remember what Eddie Murphy said so it wasn’t spectacular by any measure.

Lorne Michaels never, ever dissed Victoria Jackson. I am sure she was invited as was everyone else (I would imagine you would have to have a really bad relationship with Michaels to not be…and if you had that kind of relationship, I would think working in the industry just got harder for you).

I’m pretty sure I saw a moment of Victoria during one of the montages.

One of the funniest things I ever saw on SNL was James Belushi and Pamela Sue Martin doing the White Man’s Rap.

Lyrics went something like….

I’m a white guy, I don’t take no crap
When I deliver my white rap

I got my money the old fashioned way
My granddaddy dropped dead one day

I’m rich, hot damn
I never had to go to Vietnam

Got a BMW and MBA
Vote GOP on Election Day

On Sundays for an extra thrill
We fire up the Weber grill
Invite some white guys and their wives
We drink to within an inch of our lives
Then it’s off to Ruth and Ed’s
Where we wind up in each other’s beds
I wake up, Ruth’s next to me
I’m so glad I had a vasectomy

But that’s all right, we won’t fight
It’s just not done when your extremely white

we’re extremely white- that’s right-
we walk with our buttocks extremely tight

The Wife says:

Drop him off at the railway station
Grip my teeth in sheer frustration

Then it off to the tennis club
For a tennis match and body rub

We all go shopping. I buy a dress
Put it on the white guy’s American Express

“I’m liberated. I belong to NOW.
But I voted for Reagan anyhow

Vodka, Gin and Sweet Vermouth
Lots of bran to keep our bowels loose

‘Saturday Night Live’: All 141 Cast Members Ranked

138. Victoria Jackson
34. Dennis Miller

5. Dan Aykroyd
4. Mike Myers
3. Tina Fey
2. Eddie Murphy
1. John Belushi

Edit: Norm Macdonald at 135 is ridiculous and calling him a “Dennis Miller clone” is doubly ridiculous.

Nora Dunn (60) and Victoria Jackson should have ranked higher. They both got screwed by the fact that the writers were a boys club that didn’t really know what to do with them. He would probably point to this:
Two U.S. Marines—Staff Sergeants Joseph W. Chamblin and Edward W. Deptola—have been charged in the middle of September 2012 for “violations of the Uniform Code of Military Justice” for their involvement in the urination incident.[17][18][19][20] The two staff sergeants were officially charged with “posing for unofficial photographs with human casualties,” failing to properly prevent or report misconduct by junior Marines under their command, the indiscriminate firing of a grenade launcher and the indiscriminate firing of an enemy machine gun.[20] Lt. Gen. Mills referred both staff sergeants to a Special Court Martial.

Dana Loesch, among others, treated this as a violation of PC instead of a violation of basic human decency.

I guess the good doctor wouldn’t have any problem with the use of chemical weapons, torture of prisoners, indiscriminate killing of civilians, etc.

What a douche bag.

I think they said it was a guy, not a woman.

Don’t they require people over the age of like 80 to get a new license every year? I can’t imagine the insurance cost for someone 92 years old.

My grandmother, at 84, used to pay almost $5000 for auto insurance (she should not have been driving at 84. She was a road hazard…couldn’t stay in a single lane at all. I tried, I can’t count how many times, to get her to stop driving.) She said her car was her freedom. Mind you, she lived in Chicago, on Lake Shore Drive, where the bus stopped in front of her building, the city provided free handicapped transit, and she had a doorman with immediate access to taxi cabs. Not to mention that cab drivers throughout the city who would have loved to be at her beck and call (she was a great tipper).

That said, medical issues can pop up no matter the age.

A girl I used to work with was in an accident where a guy (in his 40’s) had a heart attack and hit her and several others. And my friend’s ex husband, at 38, had an epileptic seizure (the first one in his life) and ran into a house…the entire car was in the living room, it broke through the front bay window and kept on going.

Depends on the state. In Massachusetts once you get your license all you have to do to renew is take an eye exam once every 10 years(you need to renew every 5 years, but can do every other one online without the exam).

If you do that, keep an eye on the situation to make sure it doesn’t get too warm under the sink and also watch for a potentially cracked/burst pipe which could be a problem once the pipe thaws.

You might consider picking up a heat tape to wrap around the exposed pipes to help keep them warm. You’d only need to turn it on when the temp gets really low.

You might also want to insulate the section of pipe under the cabinet floor (the section from the foundation that goes up into the cabinet); this is often the place where the pipes freeze (less inside air can reach the pipes).

After having our kitchen pipes burst twice, we finally got the heat tape. Ours has a thermostat so it only turns on after a certain temperature is reached and shuts itself off when the temperature rises above freezing.

I don’t want to live in what they want.

And I swear, I’m not psychologically fit for cold weather anymore. Brrrrrr!

Low pressure will track across the Deep South this afternoon and then through the Carolinas tonight. Precipitation will begin spreading into the mountains of Northeast Georgia and the Western Carolinas around noon, then gradually spread across the foothills and Piedmont through the rest of the afternoon into the early evening hours. Enough cold air will be in place to support an initial period of snow and sleet across most of the area, but quickly warming temperatures aloft will allow for a transition to freezing rain from southwest to northeast late this afternoon and this evening. The precipitation will taper off late tonight, but not before significant accumulations of snow and ice occur.

Yet i haven’t seen one iota of precipitation. Maybe later.

“We got 10 inches here!”
“Well, I’m happy for you, but don’t you think that is oversharing?”

Hey Gang,

We’ve got about 5 inches here in Clarksvegas, with a base of freezing rain / ice. Not as bad as it could have been, but the roads are pretty bad from what I’m seeing on the local cameras. I haven’t even tried to get out of the driveway, no purpose in going out just for the sake of going out.

Hope all is well for the rest of you.

RBS

It’s pretty much all sleet, ice, and freezing rain here in Nashville…even Gallatin Road’s a slushy mess right now. I had to chip off a good 1/2 inch of ice off my car, just to drop my suit off at the dry cleaners and go to Kroger.
