Thoughts:
1. I’ve never seen somebody play the neck of a guitar like that.
2. I’ve never seen fingers do those things!
3. I find myself imagining what AC/DC would sound like rendered on a sitar.
4. This confirms just how much WATCHING somebody play adds to the experience of the performance (I learned that lesson from the videos posted here).
5. Bluesy sound like that wouldn’t be out of place on a Sons of Anarchy episode soundtrack…

Battle of Calth

The Battle of Calth, also referred to as the Calth Atrocity, was the name given by later Imperial scholars to the treacherous campaign conducted during the early stages of the Horus Heresy in the 31st Millennium by the traitorous XVII Space Marine Legion, the Word Bearers, on behalf of the Warmaster Horus against their hated rivals, the XIII Space Marine Legion, better known as the Ultramarines. The campaign was launched by the Word Bearers’ Primarch Lorgar Aurelian with the goal of exterminating the XIII Space Marine Legion outright. The purpose of the Word Bearers’ invasion of the Ultramarines’ Realm of Ultramar in the Eastern Fringes of the galaxy was to tie down the XIII Legion and prevent them from reinforcing their fellow Loyalists as the Traitor Legions marched relentlessly on Terra itself. The crux of the campaign came on the Agri-world of Calth in the Ultramar Sector, where the Ultramarines successfully broke the Word Bearers’ surprise assault after a viciously-fought siege action, though at the cost of terrible casualties and the complete destruction of Calth’s atmosphere and once-verdant biosphere. As a result of the devastation wrought by the Word Bearers during the Calth Atrocity, future generations of Calth’s people were required to live deep underground in massive subterranean hive cities to escape their world’s radiation-scorched, airless surface. While both the Ultramarines and their Primarch Roboute Guilliman survived the Word Bearers’ assault, the campaign successfully prevented the Ultramarines from participating in the Battle of Terra as Horus had planned.

Growing up I never understood the hangup on celebrity deaths, but I get it now because of her. The world losing her just hurt.

I have some experience dating a beautiful but screwed-up Jewish girl and too much of what I read about her personal mess felt familiar to me - all glamour and beauty on the outside, and senseless, cause-less torment on the inside. A hurricane in a gift box. She’d probably have been a terrible person to know, but she was such a sublime artistic force, and the “what could have been” is especially painful.

This year, Chinese New Year falls just one day after Ash Wednesday. I’m surprised the folks who got all worried about the Mayan calendar didn’t catch on to this particular convergence.

We’ve nothing to worry about, unless Chinese people start stripping half-naked and go dancing in the streets. Then surely the Apocalypse will be upon us.

How do people get scombroid fish poisoning?

Fish in the Scombridae family (tuna, mackerel, skipjack, and bonito) are the most common sources of illness. Other fish, such as mahi mahi, bluefish, marlin, and escolar can also cause scombroid fish poisoning.

When these types of fish are not properly refrigerated, bacteria begin to break down the flesh of the fish and histamines are formed. Histamines are heat-resistant; therefore, illness can occur even with fish that is properly canned or cooked. While some contaminated fish will not show any outward signs of spoilage, others will have a bad odor or a “honey-combed” appearance when cooked. Fish that looks spoiled should not be consumed. Histamine levels may be unevenly distributed throughout the fish, and the amount of histamine needed to cause symptoms may vary from person to person. Therefore, people who share a single contaminated portion of fish may show a wide range of symptoms.

Call me suspicious and cynical, too:

“Maybe I’m just too cynical, but this ruling from a Bush appointee seems suspiciously well-timed to prevent the Republican majority from having to follow through on their threat to defund DHS. Via the Washington Post:

“A federal judge in Texas last night temporarily blocked the Obama administration’s executive actions on immigration. The judge, responding to a suit filed by 26 Republican-run states, did not rule on the legality of immigration orders but said there was sufficient merit to the challenge to warrant a suspension while the case goes forward.”

It can be applied to any policy, too. The GOP has spent the last 6 years saying “not Obama” to everything, without really offering viable alternatives.

And that’s most of the GOP poll-goers these days.

Indeed, compared to most of the GOP, Pataki is a radical marxist.

Was just skimming over TPM and saw this:

GOP State Rep. Sparks Backlash With Comments About Nuking ISIS

Then there’s the real possibility of Republicans defunding DHS to show Obama.. something. The party that the American voting brain trust thinks is stronger on defense.

I hate to be this over-the-top cranky this early, but if the GOP gets the Presidency, Bush’s last year in the White House will look like a frigging picnic compared to what would be coming.

I’ve actually been avoiding commenting when the few conservatives who post here show up, because all I can think is “You’re obviously an intelligent person. Why why WHY do still supper this party?”

The GOP seem to have taken a page out of Willard 3.0’s code, namely the idea that the President was a “failure” because he didn’t get the economy cracking again like the Republicans so obviously could have had they been in charge. Of course, if you ask them how, they give you a blank look before muttering about more deregulation and more tax cuts.

George Pataki is on CNBC all but announcing candidacy for the GOP nomination.

And the local media is saying that Christie has all but announced his own run too. Because he took a bunch of questions regarding policy statements and actions he’d take if he became president.

Note that anything he actually said are nothing but empty platitudes and meaningless jargon that all politicians say when they’re running for office.

Everyone says that they want to reform the tax code, but no one can agree on how to do it. He says he wants to make sure that companies don’t go offshore. Except that nothing he’s said to date would change that.

He made a few statements that attack what the President has done (like he’d restore our leadership in the world - even though we are still the world’s leader whether the GOP likes it or not).

He talked about keeping promises made to those who are in the military (except that the GOP has steadfast refused to raise pay, let alone minimum wages for everyone else, even those who have served and separated from the military).

Doubt we’ll see any more concrete proposals this early, because they’ll be turned to swiss cheese within hours.

“Fair Tax” is an utterly horrific system that taxes all purchases of end-user retail goods and services. Rich people are exempt because they can charge everything to their business account so the burden falls primarily on the poor.

196 lawhawk  Feb 17, 2015 8:45:29am

re: #190 The Vicious Babushka

And a sales tax can impose an even greater regulatory burden than an income tax (mostly because every single transaction would be taxed, and doesn’t address what happens in those states that don’t currently impose a sales tax.

The whole notion of fair tax is anything but since it disproportionately affects those who have the least disposable incomes. A far greater percentage of their income will go to taxes than someone who is well off.

And if we’re talking about fair tax (a sales tax) what then of services, which are normally not taxed. Expanding the tax base to include services would allow a reduction in the tax rate, but people who provide services, whether it’s telcom, utilities, or professional services, might chafe under the new reporting/collecting/admin headaches of another taxing regime.

So, yes, this would be a mess and it would also likely hamper consumption (affecting economic growth too). It’s the GOP daily double - propose a tax policy that collects less revenue than needed to operate govt, and harm those least able to afford tax hikes.

re: #193 Targetpractice

There are ways to broaden the tax base but they aren’t necessarily going to increase the tax burden on the poor.

For instance, sales tax can be expanded to services (professional services), reducing the overall tax rate.

Or property taxes could be imposed on nonprofit properties, reducing tax rates for all ratable properties.

You can also broaden the definition of income or restrict deductions or exemptions so as to reduce the overall rate (to keep the overall revenue levels the same).

But the way that the GOP approaches these things, they look to cut the revenue or to hold it the same, while those least able to afford it are hit with hikes.

Generally when I hear the GOP use the phrase “broaden the tax base,” it’s coupled with talk about the “47%” and “skin in the game” or some variation thereof. There’s little illusion that they’re talking about anything other than imposing higher/newer taxes on those who can least afford to pay them.

re: #197 FemNaziBitch

That’s all part of the wishful thinking department. Sales tax requires periodic transfers of collected tax. States require monthly, quarterly, or annual returns depending on the volume of sales.

While the IRS has a withholding requirement that allows for biweekly remittances, the problem is that sales tax volumes can vary tremendously from month to month, which makes projections far more difficult to do. It makes budgeting even more difficult and subject to vast swings in revenue depending on how the economy is doing. States that have greater reliance on the sales tax have a greater difficulty in projecting their budgets and are more likely to miss their projections too.

Well, I had to make it a point to purchase a lot of household and other stuff from the local thrift store when Bush was tearing down the economy and it’s only been in the last few years that we changed our spending habits and started buying some things new (although I continue both and recycle, too). From observing the shoppers at the thrift store, a lot of people did the same thing. And there’s no tax on used mdse purchased through a charity like this particular thrift store, whereas in this part of NC, the sales tax is 6.75% on new purchases, although food is 2%. So to say that poor people pay no taxes is a myth, considering the various other taxes paid locally, state and federal.

Here is how they want to change the tax code but they are afraid to say it out loud except to a select few:

1. Abolish the IRS
2, Impose a 30% National Sales Tax to replace the IRS

IOW shift the tax burden from the rich to the poor.

There are a lot of GOP politicians who are promoting this “Fair Tax” horse shit.

A 30% national sales tax!? HA. I beg and plead that the GOP run on this and then watch the idiots vote for them. That modestly priced $19,000 car is now nearly $25,000 because of the 30% tax. Dumb as a bag of hammers, that Dr. Carson is:

Congress appropriates funds. The President requests a budget and administers the law. Congress is now balking at paying the bills over how the President wants to administer the law. That doesn’t mean the President is committing treason. Far from it.

Rather, it shows that Congress - and the GOP in Congress in particular - refuse to abide by their constitutional requirements to appropriate funds to keep government operational (along with providing for the general defense of the nation). Since the DHS is a defense related federal department, this is on Congress if they force a shutdown over the President’s policy.

It’s no wonder that the GOP loses in polls on a potential shutdown too, which is why the court decision finding that the Administration policy was put on hold gives the GOP another bite of the apple to try and block the administration.

In their little fantasy world, the money saved through the abolition of other taxes will actually make up for the double digit sales tax, plus said “fair tax” will also be a voluntary tax. Indeed, a fantasy world. Spending on retail and large-ticket items (appliances, cars, etc) will exponentially decrease over time because the 30% sales tax will start making items unattainable. Because of the drop in spending, manufacturers/companies will have to raise prices, layoff employees, and/or shut down. Thus, the downward spiral will only get worse and worse. And they assume 100% tax base (affecting everything from durable goods to cars and home purchases (and mortgages).

But it would still require an IRS or related agency to verify income information so as to provide their prebate, which is supposed to lessen the burden on the poor.

Then there’s the enforcement problems with trying to administer a national sales tax. States have compliance issues with sales tax (which is a trust tax - the obligation to pay the tax is on the consumer, and on the seller to collect and remit the tax to the govt) all the time, and collecting a 30% tax would likely mean all businesses would have to go to a weekly remittance - a 12 fold increase in the reporting requirements.

That too would mean a significant increase in the administration, auditing, and oversight. Far from being smaller or more efficient, you’d have an agency that is going to rival the IRS but affect consumption far more directly.

Now, you can argue that businesses already remit withholding on a regular schedule like that, but you’re still requiring a significant bureaucracy to administer.

Then there’s the huge issue of how states would impose their state income taxes, since nearly all states that do so are keyed to the IRC. They’d either have to enact their own income tax law/rules or refer to now repealed laws. It would be an administrative nightmare at the state level.

If there is no such law, then how can the ‘all persons shall have equal protection under the law’ (paraphrasing here) under the 14th A. even come into play? There has to be a law for or against something already in place in order for a person to have equal protection with/of that law.

As John Ralston Saul points out, “In the late 50s/early 60s jointly held stock corporations carried between 30 to 40 per cent of the tax burden in the West. By the early 90s that had fallen to 10 to 15 per cent.”

Then the personally wealthy also had their taxes cut. The burden kept falling down the pyramid. The people near the bottom just don’t have enough money to cover what the wealthy and corporations no longer pay.

We do not have a debt crisis. We have a taxation crisis.

Christie’s probably hoping he’ll be in the White House when the indictments come through so he can pardon himself.

Christie’s chance came and went in 2012. He’s right now polling at 37% approval in NJ and is polling lower than “Gene Eric Republican” in Iowa. He’d be better served by trying to go out of office on a high note than wasting money on a presidential run that will never go anywhere.

Is there a possibility that his fame has been exaggerated? OK, he separated those twins, but maybe that time it was dumb luck. Sorry, he’s shown himself to be too ignorant to give him any benefit of doubt.

I think one can be very talented in one specific area, while having absolutely no wide ranging knowledge aside from that one area of expertise.

That said, he has certainly been associated with some questionable quacks. Dumb.

Carson:

The wonderful thing about a company like Mannatech is that they recognize that when God made us, He gave us the right fuel. And that fuel was the right kind of healthy food. You know we live in a society that is very sophisticated, and sometimes we’re not able to achieve the original diet. And we have to alter our diet to fit our lifestyle. Many of the natural things are not included in our diet. Basically what the company is doing is trying to find a way to restore natural diet as a medicine or as a mechanism for maintaining health.

ooops

In November 2004, the mother of a child with Tay-Sachs disease who died after being treated with Mannatech products filed suit against the company in Los Angeles Superior Court, seeking damages for intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligent misrepresentation, and conspiracy to commit fraud. The suit alleged that the Mannatech sales associate who “treated” the three-year-old had shared naked photos of the boy — provided by his mother as evidence of weight gain, with an understanding that they’d be kept confidential — with hundreds of people at a Mannatech demonstration seminar. The sales associate was further accused of authoring an article, in the Journal of the American Nutraceutical Association in August 1997, explicitly claiming that Mannatech’s supplements had improved the boy’s condition, even though the boy had, by that time, died. The suit also presented evidence that Mannatech was still using photographs of the boy in promotional materials on its website in March 2004, “with the clear inference that [the boy] was alive and doing well some seven years after his actual death.”

Interesting. The troller in chief behind Rand Paul’s digital strategy has been behind those of Ted Cruz, and has worked for McConnell and even consults on Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s reelection strategy.

The man behind the provocative tweets, memes and hashtags is Vincent Harris, 26, the chief digital strategist for Paul. Harris sat down for an interview with “The Fine Print.” Harris previously worked for Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, who is another prospective 2016 presidential candidate.

“Sen. Paul from the beginning has been very digitally savvy,” Harris said during an interview in Washington. “Even in my first interview with him, he mentioned that he wanted to run a cutting-edge digital campaign — something new, something that was very different than what President Obama had run.”

But Harris said Paul’s digital strategy isn’t just about picking fights with possible 2016 rivals — it’s also about differentiating Paul from the pack.

“The strategy and the number one problem that people have in politics is just getting their information across to somebody — how do you reach somebody at all,” Harris said. “News and information has to be entertaining, it’s got to be interesting and it’s got to be different than how everyone else is communicating.”

Harris picked up his cellphone to explain his point further.

“People expect their politicians now to take serious messages, to take serious policy and to deliver it to them in a way they can read through this device — through memes, through Web videos, through personal Facebook posts, through short, pithy tweets,” he said.

On the Internet, he said, creativity is key. Gone are the days of simply posting press releases on Facebook or linking to a speech on the floor of the Senate.

News has to be entertaining. Not accurate. not factual. Entertaining. That sums up much of the GOP strategy these days. Bread and circus. Distract from the reality that the policies and postures taken by the GOP would have disastrous consequences, and that their obstructionism over the past 5+ years has stifled economic growth.

I just read it. It was in a Q&A with a State Department spokesperson, and, naturally, is totally taken out of context. In context, it was quite good. She was arguing with someone who wanted to KILL MORE, KILL MORE ISIS, KILL THEM ALL, and said that we could not kill our way out of it. We were killing many of them, but we were also going to have to address the underlying causes of discontent that ISIS/ISIL feeds upon.

287 RealityBasedSteve  Feb 17, 2015 10:52:53am

Well, the main roads are good to fair (clear lanes, but lots of slush / buildup between lanes), the side roads are like crud, and if it gets down to about 5* like they say tonight, it will probably get dangerous.

That said, I got out, got a starbucks, got some tobacco and now am back. I know that there are some real trouble spots out there still, people are saying that the Interstate is still a mess in places.

And BS, I missed your post, otherwise I’d have knocked out those chores for you no problem.

re: #279 The Vicious Babushka

The leadership of AQ and other terror groups are often anything but the downtrodden. Bin Laden came from a wealthy family (construction business) in Saudi Arabia. Zawahiri was a doctor. So too were several leaders of Hamas. There are architects and engineers who have joined up as leaders of these terror groups.

But they need minions and cannon fodder on which to sustain themselves, and their ideologies focus on indoctrinating those who lack opportunities with a path to glory or paradise or wish fulfillment or excitement or fulfilling violent tendencies, etc.

Those folks come from all sorts of backgrounds, and if the local economy sucks (or doesn’t exist as in many lawless or failed state/regions) then you’ve got a sufficient group of people who are willing to take up arms.

There are any number of reasons for people to join up with these groups, and there’s just as many strategies to deal with lawless and failed state situations, from the pure military (bomb ‘em) to nation building - and all measure of steps in between. The way to combat ISIL is in the middle - going after the terror caches and leadership, and try to build a functioning government in these areas.

ISIL is taking advantage of failing/failed states to grow. That’s why they’re operating within places like Northern Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Libya, etc. Boko Haram is doing much the same in Nigeria.

COIN (counter insurgency) and counterterrorism strategies rely on a combination of military force and non-military actions.

It comes as no surprise that the GOP has taken to the military only solution because it’s the only alternative they can offer to what has been done by prior Administrations (all of whom have had to concede that military only is not sufficient).
