A Must-See, Totally Berserk NPR Tiny Desk Concert: Mucca Pazza

This has to be the craziest NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert ever. A glorious noise indeed.

When I first imagined Mucca Pazza at the Tiny Desk, I honestly had no idea how the Chicago band’s 23 members would fit in — in the literal sense of the term. To load-test this performance, we actually gathered a gaggle of interns behind my desk and began to stack people on cabinets, step-stools and, of course, desks.

In nearly seven years of doing Tiny Desk Concerts, with more than 400 participating acts, this turned out to be the biggest one yet. It was also one of the most fun, with Mucca Pazza performing songs from its album L.Y.A. using trombones, saxophones, trumpets, woodwinds, violin, electric mandolin, accordion, cello, guitar, sousaphone, a big bass drum, percussion instruments and more. Then there were the cheerleaders.

I first heard this giant performance-art marching band at globalFEST 2013, and Mucca Pazza’s mix of cacophony, symphony and crazed frolic makes it a large, lovable renegade. The band just celebrated its first 10 years together, so if you missed the first decade, prepare to be a fan of the next. You may even be tempted to join this circus.— BOB BOILEN

I love seeing Neo-Confederates bloviate about “treason”.

Lessee: “levying war against the United States”, “adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort”…. They don’t seem to realize that the US would have been perfectly within their legal rights to pretty much hang the lot of them in 1865.

I really like the song “Holiday On Ice.” Reminds me of the more angular work of the latter day Mothers Of Invention, I’m thinking Uncle Meat and the more musical parts of Weasels Ripped My Flesh.

GotNwes has learned that the the Holder Justice Department has likely made interracial crime statistics harder to find for stupid people since Obama came into office.

UpChuck has also ripped off content from a St. Pete TV station while gloating a black man died, and doxxed the real identity of Icarus Verum, the editor of addictinginfo.org and ifyouonlynews.com, and called him an anti-Semite.

I guess the bad fish didn’t slow him down much.

Typhus

Typhus, also known as Typhus the Traveller, originally the Space Marine named Calas Typhon of the world of Barbarus, is the Herald of Nurgle and the host of the terrible plague known as the Destroyer Hive. He is a Champion of Chaos and the former First Captain of the Death Guard Traitor Legion. Typhus is the most feared of all Chaos Lords to command one of the legendary Plague Fleets. He rules the greater portion of the Death Guard’s armada from the bridge of his flagship, the Terminus Est, a warship encrusted with the filth of aeons that was ancient even when the Horus Heresy began some ten thousand standard years ago. His skill in ship-to-ship combat has been honed over many millennia of war, and when he broods in his command throne upon his starship’s bridge, he and the titanic war machine become one. Though the warship exists on the cusp of Imperial legend, its three-pronged pict-sign is dreaded by admirals and Planetary Governors alike across the Segmentum Obscurus. Wherever Typhus’ flagship appears, it heralds plague, death and misery on a system-wide scale. Even whispers of its coming can cause panicked evacuations from worlds in its path, for wherever Typhus goes, pain and despair blossom in his wake.

I might just have my grandson rip out W8 and install the W7 he purchased for his computer if I can get this thing off my desktop. Let me describe. As we were talking about the miscreants in Halifax yesterday, I found a graphic on another site that I thought represented the mindset of the 23 yr old woman. It’s a swastiska made from kittens, a screen shot of one of her FB pages I got from another site. Now, of course, I regret downloading it.

I mean, who makes something like that but a disturbed mind?

I see—it was all about Vilks.

“On 19 August 2007, the newspaper printed a drawing by Swedish artist Lars Vilks depicting the Prophet Mohammed as a roundabout dog. According to editor-in-chief Ulf Johansson, the publishing of the image was done by the newspaper in order to protest the refusal of several Swedish art galleries to show a series of Mohammed paintings by Vilks.[2]”

Likely he is. I’ve asked a friend who used to write for those websites for confirmation. The piece about the Palestinian woman is a nasty piece of work, I agree, but Gouldman is Jewish himself and he’s insisting he’s not anti-Semitic.

This is Chuck’s method for learning the proper method and type of papers a defamation lawsuit generates. He couldn’t find out how to do it by searching the Internet since he has no skills for doing so. And he also couldn’t get anyone to pay his site money in order to help him file the paperwork.

Thanks. I was thinking it might mean what we call “libertarian” here in the States.

Still, my view is that by pushing that paper to publish his “art” because Swedish galleries refused to exhibit what I see as an amateurish work, he has put a lot of people at risk because of the content. And no, I’m not excusing those who would use violence toward him (and others considered “collateral damage”) because violence is no way to settle matters, IMHO, but neither is mocking an entire culture or religion. That is absolute bias.

Maybe Fox offered him a techie job, like “online media editor,” and not something that would give him any sort of writing job.

Morning! How is everyone doing in this crazy weather. I’m waiting for the last bit of the overnight snow to trickle out and away, then out to clean off the walkways.

I am so not looking forward to tomorrow another single digit day temp wise. I sure as heck hope the change in the month brings the eastern half of the US back to normal weather.

So, is Chuck CJ going to get sued? I sure hope someone knocks him back.

I saw the bit about him being at the WSJ and maybe getting booted. I don’t care what job, or what company, but judging how he acts online I can well imagine him being moved on. The dude probably is a cancer in any group setting. One that would quickly be removed.

I’ve seen more than a couple of examples of where pieces in mainstream print media weren’t fact-checked and slid through. It seems today’s “journalists” want to be “independent” to avoid such screening of their “work”.

We don’t seem to have as many true reporters as in the old days as we do muckrakers today.

And yes, I think govt wrong-doing should be exposed, but not at the expense of real facts and the truth. If we need some secrecy in tactics and strategy in defending this country from prying eyes, what other alternative is there?

Which means that the ARod circus in NYC metro is now on insane clown posse mode. He’s offered up a traditional non-apology apology - an apology for being caught, not for doing steroids and PEDs for years. At least a third of his career stats were accumulated while doing PEDs, and who knows about the rest.

He torched all relationships with anyone at the Yankees, and he screwed his fellow players and the union and league offices.

If he had any sense, he’d retire. But he’s too vain to give that a thought. Rather, he’ll show that he’s got nothing left, struggle to catch up to major league pitchers, and break down for all to see. He’ll make it impossible for the Yankees to move him or do anything with his roster position. It’s always about him.

And he just needs to go away. Permanently. Other players took their punishments and came back respectably. A Rod admitted under oath that he took PEDs, threw his cousin under the bus and testified against Bosch, who got just a few months shy of a max sentence the other day. A Rod got immunity from federal prosecution to put away Bosch. Otherwise, A Rod could have been facing crime time too for distributing steroids.

As for the game on the field, don’t think the Yanks are going to do so well this year. Too many question marks and key players are older. It’s going to be some lean times up in the Bronx. At least the Mrs has Matt Harvey to look forward to returning (the Mets have some killer young pitching; the hitting OTOH is suspect). Harvey is the most electrifying pitcher I’ve seen in person since Verlander a few years back. If he comes back from the injury as good as he claims, then he’ll make the Mets competitive in short order since he’ll make the rest of the pitching staff more effective.

Mega-headdesk:

Obama literally cannot raise a finger without driving the rightwing into a hooting, screeching frenzy of hatred and fear:

Obama and the Muslim Gang Sign

Is President Obama a Muslim? A lot has been written about this, but if photographs speak louder than words, then a photo taken at last August’s U.S.-African Leaders’ Summit in Washington D.C. might shed considerable light.

It shows Barack Hussein Obama flashing the one-finger affirmation of Islamic faith to dozens of African delegates.

The Associated Press took this astonishing photo as the African dignitaries joined Obama, who hosted the event, in a State Department auditorium for a group photograph. It was published in an article in Britain’s Daily Mail, and it was the only use ever of the photo.

The one-finger display is the distinctive Muslim gang sign: The index finger points straight up while the thumb wraps underneath and presses against the digital phalange of the middle finger. The remaining fingers are squeezed against the palm in order to highlight the extended forefinger. The extended finger is symbolic of the one-God concept of Muhammad and is understood by all believers to be a symbolic shahada, the Muslim affirmation of faith: There is but one God and Muhammad is his messenger.

It’s a BS apology for a player who’s torched all of his relationships - with fellow players, with the fans, with the team, and with the league.

A decade ago, his team, players, and fans would forgive and forget because he could still dig the long ball. Now? Nope.

OFFFFFS. Because one F simply will not do. These people are not right in the head. Tin foil isn’t quite strong enough either.

Everything this president does or has done is/has an ulterior motive and anti-American to the right. Period.

They complain the president has done nothing to stop ISIL, even as the bombs keep dropping on ISIL from American UAVs, aircraft, and we continue supporting the countries on the front lines against it.

The GOP demands that the President act, but when they’re provided with an AUMF request, they balk at acting because it would mean that they have to admit that the President is not only acting, but that the GOP assents to this course of conduct. The GOP has all but admitted that their foreign policy position is to snipe at the President while giving him a wink/nod to continue attacking, because they’ve got nothing better.

It’s a mess, and among the reasons the right is so screwed up is that they’re getting their news cues from Fox, which explains much. Fact-free and full of anti-Obama posturing unsupported by facts or logic.

Speaking of WTF moments, there’s this bit out of Paris.

“We’re racist, we’re racist, and that’s the way we like it.”

That was the chant a group of alleged Chelsea fans sung on the Paris Metro system before the huge UEFA Champions League last 16 clash against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday, which finished in a 1-1 draw, as the men in question pushed a black man off the Metro train and would not allow him to board.

[ RELATED: Three things we learned from Chelsea, PSG ]

Watch the video above, as a British expat filmed the incident as it unfolded at the platform of a Metro station.

Chelsea Football Club have since released the following statement as footage of the incident has spread across the world. The faces of those so-called Chelsea fans responsible are clearly evident in the video and some have already been identified on social media.

It’s a feature, not a bug, of peer pressure, and it too many times goes away slowly, if the person is intelligent and self-searching enough, or not at all.

We’re social beings, and it’s probably natural, in modern society anyway where we no longer have the tribal assignments of old, to fit into a sort of “tribal” situation where you’re accepted, such as social circles, gangs, even on the internet. All kids are trying to “fit in” the larger society, if they retain a modicum of insecurity about themselves and want to “rebel” against the “wrongness” of their parents’ thinking, and many times willingly fall in with those who readily accept them. It’s not entirely a bad thing, more like a feeling of sanctuary in being among your own kind. It was an entire cultural response in the ’60s, a movement in reaction to the “nuclear family” and the reactionary political atmosphere of the ’50s which touched millions of young people.

Yeah, there are instances where women are able to take advantage of battered wife syndrome to argue that they’re killing someone in anticipation of being further assaulted.

But it’s still a homicide, and they haven’t prevented the attacks even with the firearms in the home.

It’s ignorant (on purpose) to think that most firearms deaths are the result of either suicide or homicides involving acquaintances, friends, family, or co-workers. You’re far more likely to be killed by someone you know by firearms than a stranger on the street. But the fearmongers think that being armed will be a talisman against all threats. It simply isn’t borne out by the facts or statistics.

How does having a gun protect against a rapist slipping a roofie?

A woman needs to keep her gun loaded, cocked and pointed at all potential assailants at all times. She has to time to put it down to take a drink.

How does having a gun protect against a rapist if the rapist steals the firearm from his prey and now he is armed?

re: #158 lawhawk

This guy is getting stupider by the minute. Muted.

On the one hand, it’s an ingenious idea. On the other hand, phones are going to have become a lot lighter for it to be practical.

By the time everyone is driving that type of vehicle, I’ll be long dead and gone.

Right now, a lot of people can’t even manage a cell phone and drive. And there will always be idiotic, distracted people who won’t know what to do if a self-driving vehicle goes haywire because they don’t read the instructions. : )

I doubt it is anti-semitism in the true sense of the word, more like the journo derping the question if Israeli policies (e.g. against Palestinians) have an effect of fanning anti-semitism?

Sadly, I think that it is the case, some policies do little more than look good in the domestic media and breed more resentment and hate in Gaza and the West Bank.

I just hope I am allowed to say that without being instantly labeled as an rabid anti-semite. Don’t get me wrong, I am not denying Israels right to defend itself, I’m just suggesting there are better ways of serving your countrys long-term interests.

Las Vegas Mom Tammy Meyers Went Looking for Suspect Before Road Rage Killing

nbcnews.com

“A Las Vegas woman who was killed in an apparent road rage shooting last week drove around with her armed son looking for the suspect who would later shoot her in front of her home, police said Tuesday.

“Tammy Meyers, 44, was shot by someone in a gray or silver four-door sedan outside her home around 11:22 p.m. Thursday, and died two days later. The suspect or suspects remain unidentified, police said.

“Police said Meyers and her armed 22-year-old son followed a car she believed had been involved in a road rage incident earlier that night, that they stopped following the vehicle and returned home, and when they got there a car matching the description of the one they’d followed pulled up and someone inside it began shooting. Meyers’ son returned fire, police said.” More (including video)

I would say that it is anti-Semitism to attack Jews in Sweden (or Denmark, or France, or the UK, or anywhere that is not Israel) over something they have no control over.

Indeed it is. But is it anti-semitism to ask whether the admittedly heavy-handed policies might have a fanning effect on anti-semitism?

Anyways, the journo got rapped hard pretty instantly.

He is going to be 21 and all his friends ( of various flavors) are the same.

It’s not so much that he understands what not to say in polite company, it’s that to these kids, it’s an inside joke. They just think everyone in their generation is in on it.

WE live in a very diverse area—everyone rags on each other. I think he is going to have a rude awakening when he arrives at college for the first time. He’s going to finish his degree downstate Illinois.

That sounds like me working with college undergraduates back in the early 2000s while a fraternity volunteer. In the uniform group you saw a lot of tactless wisecracking. And they thought I didn’t get the whole “Canadian” codeword for blacks until I chewed a bunch of them out for acting like racist assholes.

Cemented the reputation for them that you had to be wary of anyone over 35.
