Mother Jones Blows the Whistle on Bill O’Reilly’s Numerous “War Zone” Lies

As David Corn and Daniel Schulman report, Bill O’Reilly Has His Own Brian Williams Problem — and it makes Williams look like a piker when it comes to lying about war zone experiences. Because nobody denies that Williams was actually there in Iraq, but O’Reilly apparently made up entire stories about being in combat zones that were completely untrue.

Just go read it; the lies are exhaustively documented. But I’ll go out on a limb and predict Fox News will do absolutely nothing about it.

Bill O’Reilly: Mother Jones Report ‘Garbage’

Bill O’Reilly says a new Mother Jones report alleging that the Fox News host made false claims about his Falklands War experience is “a piece of garbage” and that its principal author, David Corn, is “a liar.”

In a telephone interview with the On Media blog, O’Reilly called Corn a “despicable guttersnipe” who has been trying to take him down “for years.”

“It’s a hit piece,” O’Reilly said. “Everything I said about what I reported in South and Central America is true. Everything.”

[…]

“I was not on the Falkland Islands and I never said I was. I was in Buenos Aires… In Buenos Aires we were in a combat situation after the Argentines surrendered.”

As he writes in The No Spin Zone, O’Reilly was in Buenos Aires when thousands of Argentines took to the streets to protest the military junta for surrendering to the Brits. O’Reilly says that the Army shot into the crowd. (Corn and his colleague Daniel Schulman say this was not war action.)

“It was clear that I did not say I was in the Falkland Islands. I’ve done myriad interviews over the years and I never said that,” O’Reilly told On Media.

UPDATE at 2/19/15 4:53:55 pm by Charles Johnson

David Corn fires back:

“Yesterday I checked in with [Fox News spokesperson] Dana Klinghoffer, and said, ‘if I have questions about a personality is it best to direct them to you?’ She said yes. So this morning at 8:30 I sent them a detailed list of questions — a dozen or more questions — with all the individual quotes and citations that the piece reports. I asked them to explain O’Reilly’s comments and to explain contradictions between what he said and the public record. And, to make things easier for Fox News, I added links wherever possible,” Corn said.

“I presented all these quotes and assertions that he made at 8:30 a.m. Then I started calling at 9 a.m. to make sure my email had been received,” Corn continued. “I called Dana about four times today, left voicemails, and sent her two follow-up emails, asking that she get back to me by 3 p.m. That would give them most of the day to respond, which seemed fair and balanced to me.”

“When I had nothing from Dana, I sent [Fox News Executive Vice President] Bill Shine an email alerting him that I’d sent this email to Dana and even said that if they needed more time, I would try to accomodate them. I never heard back from Bill and I never heard back from Dana —- so at about 5:30, I published the piece.”

Corn said that O’Reilly’s refusal to comment ahead of publication demonstrated that he would rather hide behind name calling than address the allegations in his report.

“Rather than calling anyone a liar or a guttersnipe, he had ample opportunity to deal with the facts of this case. He elected not to, and instead engaged in name calling,” Corn said. “He chose not to address the issue, he chose to throw mud. And I would say that his right to impugn others ought to be diminished until he answers the basic questions about his statements.”

I disagree, Charles. Fox News won’t do nothing; they’ll give him a promotion. Things like this are exactly what they look for. Look for “creative and original reporting” or some such.

We constantly joke that if News Corp did what NBC did to Williams (with a 6 month suspension), that News Corp wouldn’t have any on-air talent left.

I’m not surprised that News Corp wont act, nor will anyone demand O’Reilly be fired or fined. He should be gone.

He’s entitled to his own opinions, but not his own facts, and he flat out invented a back-story about his seeing combat.

Also, watch for right wingers to complain that it’s a totally different situation, and News Corp shouldn’t have to fire/suspend him because the events took place before he joined Fox. Even though he’s lied all while being on Fox. Because that’s how Fox rolls in the Shire.

FoxNews doesn’t have any African American newscasters that could take his place for 6 months so I guess he has to stay.

Boy, a LOT of activity on LGF while I was out. Went and saw “Kingsman: Secret Service”, and highly recommend it. Good story, Samuel L. Jackson stole every scene he was in, a couple of nice references to other flicks, some good cinematography, and some good characters.

It’s a bit of a spoof on the classic spy / action flick, but also a pretty good action show in and of itself.

I read the complaint and she had a very weak case for sexual harassment. Among other reasons, she voluntarily went back to work for him for more money and a promotion. The only explanation I can think of for him settling a case for 10 million or so that he could have gotten tossed or won or at worst lost for minimal damages is if she has him on tape. The allegation about O’Reilly talking to her on the phone while he pleasures himself with a vibrator and gets an orgasm might be worth 10 million! Well plaid black mail maam.

During the invasion of Iraq in 2003, there was plenty of complaining about the contrarianism and “hostility” of the MSM compared to the “patriotic” and “positive” attitude at Fox, but it was Fox’s Geraldo Rivera who got booted out of the country for revealing troop movements.
Fox and Rivera have maintained that this was just a moment of exuberence that crossed an ill defined line in the nuances of the ground rules. In fact, it was an egregious violation that could have gotten people killed if the enemy had been more alert.

HARLAN, Ky. (WKRN) - A Kentucky police department issued an arrest warrant for Queen Elsa of Arendelle, the main character of Disney’s hit movie “Frozen.”

The all-points bulletin was issued on the Harlan City Police Department’s Facebook page.

They wrote, “All points bulletin!!! HPD has issued an arrest warrant for Queen Elsa of Arendelle. Suspect is a blonde female last seen wearing a long blue dress and is known to burst into song ‘Let it Go!’”

Authorities also said that since the weather is do dangerous, they don’t want residents to “attempt to apprehend her alone.”

Harlan, Kentucky, is located about two hours northeast of Knoxville.

This is too funny (from the linked article in the OP):

When O’Reilly was excoriating Brian Williams last week for telling a war-related whopper, he said of his Fox television show, “We’ve made some mistakes in the past but very few…We take great pains to present you with information that can be verified.” And he asserted, “Reporting comes with a big responsibility, the Founding Fathers made that point very clearly. They said to us, ‘We’ll give you freedom. We’ll protect you from government intrusion. But, in return, you, the press, must be honest.’”

The only rare mistakes at Fox News are when the reporting is accidentally true.

Brian Williams can get suspended for his lies, and on the left it’s no big deal, in fact many said that if he lied, then a suspension (or worse) was deserved. In Bill O’Reilly’s case; however, he would become a martyr. He would be another example of a proud and loud conservative railroaded by the liberal media. That’s how the right and left differ. The left can make mistakes and change their minds. The left asks questions and keeps their eyes open while looking for answers, but the right is like a medieval realist, they close their eyes, search the mind of God, and they know the answers. Never being wrong, they had the answers all along.

No, I had not. It doesn’t surprise me however. It’s been brutally cold the last few days (and tonight), and the ice is still a major problem in a lot of places. It’s so cold that the salt isn’t really effective as I understand it, plus it’s so bad that the plows / trucks were getting stuck.

I’ve seen more snow here before, but I’ve never seen such a bad stretch for so long. It rolled in Monday, and there are a lot of roads that are still impassable outside the main streets / highways.

Probably the one thing that helped was that the storm rolled in on Presidents day, and LOT of people were off work in the Nashville area, otherwise the highways would have been like Atlanta last year.

Yeah, salt is worthless in temps below about 20° or so, but will work if the sun heats the surface a bit. The worst thing about this weather in the south is the lack of the proper equipment to deal with it. At least up here in Ohio and other northern cities is we have crews that take keeping the roads as clear as they can seriously.

Salt works to reduce the melting temperature of ice by essentially getting in the way of things. Sugar works too, it’s just less effective than salt because salt disassociates in water, giving you a 2 or 3 or 4 for 1 molecule/formula unit.

It’s the same for increasing the boiling temperature - it interferes with the ability of the water molecules to escape and therefore increases the temperature at which the vapor pressure equals atmospheric pressure (aka boiling).

At least that is the very fuzzy handwaving explanation of why salting the road helps up to a certain point but will then fail - because it only reduces the freezing point by so much.

54 Justanotherhuman  Feb 19, 2015 4:57:20pm

We actually didn’t get that much snow or ice, although the ground is still covered (while roads are passable), although in the morning it’s not supposed to be above 5 deg. It was 10 this morning, and didn’t get above freezing today, so what’s here has stayed. More snow next Tues and Sat.

Ready for spring.

Bill O’Reilly’s supposed Peabody award
thecarpetbaggerreport.com

“…Starting almost five years ago, O’Reilly was on FNC bragging about his award-winning, syndicated tabloid program.

“I anchored a program called Inside Edition, which has won a Peabody Award for investigative reporting,” O’Reilly said on August 30, 1999.

The Peabody happens to be the most celebrated award in journalism. There is no higher honor for a reporter in print or broadcast news. Nevertheless, O’Reilly claimed that his show, Inside Edition, was a recipient of the award.

In fact, he did so more than once. A year after this initial claim, O’Reilly was at it again, expanding on the original boast.

“Well, all I’ve got to say to that is Inside Edition has won, I believe, two Peabody awards, the highest journalism award in the country,” O’Reilly said on his Fox News program on May 8, 2000…

99 Pawn of the Oppressor  Feb 19, 2015 5:56:47pm

I wonder if older men in media are honestly medically susceptible to memory creep.

The job entails sitting at a desk repeating mantras and reading scripts and viewing clips over and over again and, if you’re an opinion commentator, you’re expected to internalize and relate to it all in some way. And if you have a big ego? Uh-oh…

After twenty or thirty years of doing that steadily, it doesn’t surprise me that somebody in Brian Williams’ position starts to lose track of what he did do, and what he only heard of, or saw from a distance.

Bill thinks he’s some kind of journalist war hero. Geraldo’s always been wrapped up in what he does. Pat Robertson seems to think he’s living in Byzantium. Brian Williams isn’t sure whether the war happened to him, or somebody else. Obviously this doesn’t excuse their obligations to fact-check themselves, but I believe it’s reasonable to think there’s a genuine medical issue at work with these guys.

And maybe women, too, though I don’t think anybody has ever accused, say, Barbara Walters of fabricating things, have they?

Let the whole thing simmer for a bit while the rice cooked. Made for a very festive looking dish :)

Served it up on the finest of WalMart brand plastic plates, and now I’ve got plenty of leftovers, a couple of pans that don’t need much more than a quick wipe / rinse.

Girl Scouts is a great organization. And they sell cookies as a regular fundraiser every year…I’m okay with that. I can remember my friend’s sister carrying her dozen boxes or so from door to door selling them to her neighbors. We lived in the country so my sister avoided that fate.

But when I see some woman with her kid outside the Bart station with 12 cases of each type of cookie stacked up I have zero interest in buying them.

No, your daughter didn’t sell a record 500 boxes of cookies for her troop. You sold 500 boxes outside a train station because you’re a competitive asshole who is using your daughter as a tool for manipulating people into buying. And if you’re sending her to school telling her she can brag to her friends how many cookies she sold you’re teaching her to lie to herself and others.

Girl Scouts should set some realistic limits on how many cookies they let people ‘check out’ to sell. It’s really pathetic.

I don’t mind it when it’s clearly a troop-run booth, because the troops actually get more money back per box depending on how many boxes they sell.

I’m less keen on the single-person booths, but I did buy from one this year because nobody comes around door to door anymore and I don’t have any more siblings in the organization since we’re all too old.

I need my Samoas. This is not negotiable. (Also they freeze well.)

When I got to my destination station there was a mother with two girls and a couple of cases. A guy bought one box, gave the girl a twenty, and said, “Keep the change.” The girl turned to her mom and said, “He told me to keep the change.” and the mother smiled and said, “Here, I’ll take that.”

Kids do do math. And yes, Samoas are a staple. I should buy a couple of boxes and freeze them until March 1st.

Well, it appears that the US Geological Survey has finally released a position on the effects of fluid injection for the purpose of oil and gas drilling (aka fracking).

USGS Release: Coping with Earthquakes Induced by Fluid Injection

Large areas of the United States that used to experience few or no earthquakes have, in recent years, experienced a remarkable increase in earthquake activity that has caused considerable public concern as well as damage to structures. This rise in seismic activity, especially in the central United States, is not the result of natural processes.

Instead, the increased seismicity is due to fluid injection associated with new technologies that enable the extraction of oil and gas from previously unproductive reservoirs. These modern extraction techniques result in large quantities of wastewater produced along with the oil and gas. The disposal of this wastewater by deep injection occasionally results in earthquakes that are large enough to be felt, and sometimes damaging. Deep injection of wastewater is the primary cause of the dramatic rise in detected earthquakes and the corresponding increase in seismic hazard in the central U.S.

“The science of induced earthquakes is ready for application, and a main goal of our study was to motivate more cooperation among the stakeholders — including the energy resources industry, government agencies, the earth science community, and the public at large — for the common purpose of reducing the consequences of earthquakes induced by fluid injection,” said coauthor Dr. William Ellsworth, a USGS geophysicist.

Edit: I forgot to mention that they like the idea of living in Wisconsin while still driving across the border to their JOBS in Mpls/St. Paul.

Welp, a majority of Murkinz now support sending ground troops to fight ISIS before they come and behead us all in our beds. Take that, loony libs!/

So afraid, we tough patriots are.

A lot of Twin Cities republicans still like the idea of moving to WI, where they won’t be ‘taxed to death’. We have a new architect at work with a two year old child and another on the way. I quit talking politics with her very soon after she started (MN is the state where all of the welfare cheats come). She and her hubby just bought some land in Hudson and can’t wait to bail on the eastern suburbs.

That’s exactly what they said about Wisconsin. Wait until she starts bitching about her property tax bill in Hudson(where there’s a great restaurant by the way - San Pedro Cafe).

If she moves, it’s a comin’.

I love her anyway ;)

She’ll probably blame it on her proximity to MN. We’ll see…

No skin in the game.

Perhaps it’s time to bring back the draft. Perhaps if more people knew their kid could get shipped off to war when they turned 18, there would be less pressure to solve every world crisis with military intervention.

157 BeachDem  Feb 19, 2015 7:49:57pm

Why oh why do the media even give airtime to buffoons like Rudy and Trump and Allen West and Newt Gingrich and Sarah Palin?Rudy hasn’t held office for 14 years and he was a mayor—with no national experience, no foreign policy experience, and a barely functioning brain; Trump never has held office and never will; West had one 2-year term in the House before he was summarily dismissed; Newt’s been out of office (and out of his mind) for 16 fucking years; Palin-ugh, I don’t even want to go there.

If they want to hear from former pols, how about Russ Feingold—he was a senator for 18 years, and has only been out of office for 4;
or Jim Webb, or Al Gore (he certainly has more knowledge than somebody like Mitt Romney, who held one freaking elected office, a state office, almost a decade ago).

No, their go-to guys and gals are the biggest assholes they can find, who they know will say something “provocative,” which has nothing to do with anything, and which will do nothing to advance the discussion of anything important, but will allow all the media bobble-heads to milk some idiotic comment for days on end.

I am so sick of it.

Look back on 20th century history and see how often that kept us out of wars. Even for the two big ones, it only lasted for a little while.

re: #155 Eclectic Cyborg

Most likely because MN hasn’t totally abandoned the safety net. People probably do come here from states where they’ve been left to rot. Forgive me for broad-brushing, but conservatives seem to feel that any poor person who receives government benefits is cheating.

It took two major events, the sinking of the Lusitania and Pearl Harbor, to get us into WWI and II respectively. Without those, it’s doubtful we would have gotten involved. Hell, in WWII, if Hitler hadn’t been such a dumbass that he thought he could pick a fight with the US and USSR at the same time and so upheld his pact with Japan, we probably would not have gotten involved in the fight in Europe. Or at least not for a couple more years.

I totally agree. Next war = draft. No deferments. Anyone who opts out, or get’s help opting out, gets published.

No way there’s a war without the poor and undocumented.

Talk about your pot and your kettle. Speaking about the Tea Party News Network debacle, one of the biggest grifters on earth said:

“It was supposed to be an educational tool for people who were upset with what is going on in the world, but then they figured out, ‘Hell, we can make more money off of this.’ I stopped going to the site. It stopped being informative.”

Yep—the one, the only, Samuel J. (not) Joe The (non) Plumber Wurzelbacher.

This statement is presented in the article as one of O’Reilly’s lies:

In a 2004 column about US soldiers fighting in Iraq, O’Reilly noted, “Having survived a combat situation in Argentina during the Falklands war, I know that life-and-death decisions are made in a flash.”

He said he was in Argentina. The Falklands are not in Argentina. How does his sentence qualify as a lie? You could take it as false if you decided to deem las Islas Malvinas as part of Argentina, and then deemed him to have said that he was there, but this is not the only possible way to parse the sentence.

re: #105 darthstar

The Girl Scout Troops in my area had it stoopidly easy during their sale. They walked around the village in between World Championships races with a wagon full of cookies. If the parents had their cars nearby in a parking garage to resupply the wagon (they surely did) they had to pay $100 a day.

Those girls (about seven of ‘em) sold A LOT of cookies.

I confess, I bought a box of thin mints from one of ‘em.

Read the whole article, and ALL of the quotes. They aren’t all as innocuous as the one you’re focusing on. Are you really surprised that someone like Bill might just be a liar and a bullshit artist? Did you really think he was a newsman with credibility?
