Thursday Night Jam: Bob Schneider Bares His Soul: “2002”

Just thought I’d drop you a line

I don’t know how much of this song is autobiographical, but it has a ring of truth that’s heart-wrenching and undeniable. I was tempted to call it the saddest song I’ve ever heard, but if it is autobiographical, Bob Schneider has pulled up out of that nose dive and built a library of work that’s nothing short of wonderful.

So yeah, it’s sadder than hell. But it’s also a reminder that redemption is always possible, if you want it enough.

This song is on the album Lonelyland.

(The audio track is pretty quiet, so you may want to turn up your speakers.)

The year is 2002
I’m doing exactly what I wanted to
Baby I don’t even think about you anymore

Just thought I’d drop you a line
Let you know I was doing fine
Baby it’s been a long, long time
Since you walked out my door

It took me some time I must confess
For a while there I was feeling less than my best
Had to get out of town so I headed out west
Ended up in Seattle

I thought I’d start a brand new band
Thought I might call it Lonelyland
Things got a little out of hand
Ended up hooked on heroin

So ended up moving back over to Germany
Living with my folks baggin’ groceries
The time I had was mostly free
I spent most of it drinking

Got myself in a jam or two
Guess that’s what I had to do
Late at night I’d still think of you
I felt like I was drowning

Got arrested once, but never convicted
Parents eventually had me evicted
Tried your number, it’d been disconnected
I guess I should’ve known

I heard you got married and you moved away
Called up your folks but where they wouldn’t say
Said it’s probably better that way
So I just let it be

Moved back to Austin ‘bout a year ago
Drive a school bus now I don’t drink no more
Go out every once in a while and see a show
But mostly I just watch TV

So I don’t know where I’m gonna send this letter
I doubt things are ever gonna get much better
Seems like life’s one big whatever
Anyway

Just thought I’d drop you a line
Lie and say I was doin’ fine
‘Cause baby it’s been a long, long time
Since you walked out my door

You know something? When you go out in 10 degree temperatures, and your zipper’s down, you know it right away.

I get that a lot. My wife has an appointment book that sort of chronicles our lives. All our trips, the weddings we go to, the baptisms, birthday parties, etc, are in them. Every once in a while I’ll look in an old one and the couple whose wedding we went to (and remember it pretty well) has a kid graduating from high school this spring. Hard to believe all those years went by so fast.

So the other day, a Travis County judge declared the Texas gay marriage ban unconstitutional. Then, this happened:

So, I notice UpChuck’s piece outing Daniel Gouldman as Icarus Verum is still up, complete with all the anti-Semite accusations. It’s well past the deadline, so I presume Gouldman’s lawyer is on the case.

It might explain why GotNews is so quiet today.

It’s a music thread. So, music!

In June my favorite touring rock ‘n’ roll circus Umphrey’s McGee took 12 hours of their time in London to record at Abbey Road Studios. They recorded enough material for a new LP, out in April titled “The London Session.”

Yes, they played The Beatles.

This is where I’m going this weekend to dive. Bonne Terre Mine in Missouri, not far from St. Louis. It’s an old lead mine that was shut down in 1962. Since the pumps were turned off, it’s now flooded and is one of the “must see” dive sites in most lists. The club is doing 3 dives there on Sunday. I’ll probably go there again, based on what others have said, the only problem is that the people who own it know that they have a truly unique offering, and price it accordingly. They have something like 15 different ‘dive trails’ there, you go as part of a guided group, and if you do it long enough, you eventually do all the trails.

I’m also going to be carrying all my gear (including 24 pounds of weights, but not, thank dog, a 40# air tank) down 13 stories to get to the actual lake. And then carry it back up at the end of the day… No videos allowed on the first dive, but I’ll try and get as much as I can on the remaining ones.

Cool, sounds fun. To be fair about the price, I’ll bet their liability insurance is just totally insane. I don’t care how safe you make it, it’s still diving in an enclosed, flooded mine. That’s always going to raise eyebrows.

Funny you say this. I thought about it for a good moment. “Who’s a Republican you’ve at least respected as a human being since Bob Dole lost his bid for President in 1996?”

I couldn’t think of a damn one.

EDIT: I’m speaking of national politicians. My governor from ‘99 to ‘07 Bill Owens is a Republican I respect, he was effective as governor even though I disagreed with most of his social policy positions.

McCain for me briefly in 2008 before he picked Palin and started making tax increases which FWIW he had voted for out to be “socialism”and “wealth distribution” and expressed support for out to be “wealth distribution.” Plus he’s been downright bitter and vindictive to Obama since Obama beat him. Romney? There are professional wrestlers I respect more than that guy. W’s looks a little better since leaving but that’s only because the party and ideology has grown so much more fucked up. So yeah Dole for me too. A legitimate war hero and someone fairly respectable. Hope he’s doing all right by the way. I know he was spotted advocating for a disability thing a few years back and it saddened him big time that his party in the Senate was pretty much all against it.

Saw someone make a good point downstairs. It seems like the media really loves going for has-beens or never was beens for the right when they want a lame soundbtie bashing the president. Whether it’s Rudy who last was in office when today’s first time voters were in kindergarten, Donald Trump who has never been elected to anything, and Allen West who served one term in the Congress.

That would be me who made that point. Today must be our day—I couldn’t remember that it was you who mentioned the Dixie Chicks earlier.

40 HappyWarrior  Feb 19, 2015 9:33:06pm

Honestly I’ve felt for sometime that Rudy was a man in love with his own celebrity. When I was a kid and he would appear on SNL and Adam Sandler movies, I found that somewhat endearing, now that I’m older, I see it as a man who sees himself as a celebrity more so than a leader. Rudy should have just stuck to taking down mobsters from the five families. He was actually good at that. Pretty much everything else involving politics? Nada.

Ha, yeah I did. I brought it up because the right went hysterical about a pretty tame comment especially compared to what Rudy- a former elected official and presidential candidate had to say. I saw Walker’s “response” to Giuliani’s comments. Man what a load of crap. It was some hot air about New Yorkers having strong opinions and stuff. Well Scotty let’s see if you ever do heaven forbid become president and Bill De Blasio accuses you of not loving this country.

Probably got a lot of info from dear old dad.

Harold Giuliani had trouble holding a job and had been convicted of felony assault and robbery and served time in Sing Sing; after his release he served as an enforcer for his brother-in-law Leo D’Avanzo, who ran an organized crime operation involved in loan sharking and gambling at a restaurant in Brooklyn.

43 HappyWarrior  Feb 19, 2015 9:38:01pm

You know who the last genuinely good Republican to sit in the office was. Probably Ford. Not a so-con warrior. Probably honestly given how much Betty was outspoken about key women’s issues, one of the most feminist presidents of his era. Also pro-choice, pro-ERA, and a supporter of gay rights. He and Betty are why I just can’t chalk older conservatives attitudes on gays and gay marriage to just generational values. This is a man who would be 102 if he were alive today and yet he would be to the left of every single GOP prospective presidential candidate on LGBT issues. Ford also gets brownie points for strongly defending John Paul Stevens against his right wing critics. I’ve come to respect the older Bush but one contrast with Jerry is that H.W lamented Souter becoming part of the liberal bloc.

I do remember hearing that later. It’s a good thing what he did but as I said, he really wasn’t that good of a mayor and he really is someone in love with his celebrity- not someone I want as a leader of anything.

Gerald Ford was among the first property owners at Beaver Creek, CO. When he bought in the place was fledgling big time, but Ford knew. In 1980 he bought a ski-in ski-out house with a pool at Beaver Creek. The man knew how to find his Shangri-La.

The Fords were deeply involved in the valley, hosting charity balls, ski races, I even got to ski with Jerry when I was a wee lad when he did his “Ski With A President” thing with the local elementary school skiers.

A lot of places here are named after the Fords. Gerald Ford Amphitheatre, Betty Ford Gardens, there’s a ski run at Beaver Creek called President Ford’s. The stretch of I-70 through Eagle County in Colorado is named The Gerald R. Ford Memorial Highway, arguably in the top five most beautiful stretches of interstate highway in the Union.

Bless Jerry Ford’s heart! I loved his depiction in The Simpsons.

As usual, upchuck doesn’t know how to read past a headline.

The headline reads:
Limited airborne transmission of Ebola is ‘very likely,’ new analysis says

upchuck shouts out his vindication:

The actual article says (bolding mine):

“It is very likely that at least some degree of Ebola virus transmission currently occurs via infectious aerosols generated from the gastrointestinal tract, the respiratory tract, or medical procedures, although this has been difficult to definitively demonstrate or rule out, since those exposed to infectious aerosols also are most likely to be in close proximity to, and in direct contact with, an infected case,”

The paper, titled ‘Transmission of Ebola Viruses: What We Know and What We Do Not Know,” takes pains to note that respiratory transmission of Ebola is unproven

The review itself points out that “to date, investigators have not identified respiratory spread (either via large droplets or small-particle aerosols) of Ebola viruses among humans.

Yep. It’s a good thing Agnew had to resign. President Agnew. Shivers. I’ve read that before he got picked to be VP that Ford had intended on retiring at the end of the term. History had other plans for him. It’s a good thing honestly that Ford wasn’t swept to the dustbin of history. His life story is actually quite inspiring.

He told a joke one week: “Cats are like Baptists—you know they’re out raising hell, but you can’t never catch them at it.”

Next week he was forced to issue a weak-ass disclaimer.

The week after he said about the continuing controversy: “Let me make one thing clear: I was born a Baptist, I was raised a Baptist, and I’ll die a Baptist. [pause] I’ve got no ambition at all!”

Needless to say, that was the last show.

Was that also on CBS? The censors went nuts with the Smothers Brothers shows for much the same reasons.

“His latest budget, which he unveiled earlier this month, seeks even more property tax cuts. At the same time, it cuts $300 million from the state’s public universities as well as cuts to public media and the Department of National Resources. It also seeks new borrowing: $1.3 billion to cover transportation projects instead of increasing the gas tax and more than $200 million to finance a new basketball stadium.”

David Carr, incomparable, irrepressible, and now legendary, is my friend and my brother. I talked to him about everything—relationships, money problems, taxes, religion, drugs, alcohol, travel, writing, food, death. On Thursday night it was announced that David collapsed and died in the newsroom of The New York Times. On Sunday night, it was announced that I received the George Polk Award for Commentary for my article “The Case For Reparations.” This award has my name on it, but it is the property of David Carr….

… I still remember stumbling upon him in another editor’s office having just turned in a draft of that eviction story, and David looking up and saying, “We were just here talking about your incredible fucking story.” No one had ever said anything like that to me. I remember my mother calling the office one day to talk to me. And David, in his brusque, brutal way, grabbed the phone from me and said, “I just want you to know that your son is here working his ass off.” No one had ever said anything like that to my parents about me. I was a fuck-up. I was a knucklehead. I was going to end up on the corner. I was going to end up in jail. I was going to end up dead.

And then I wasn’t.

David Carr convinced me that, through the constant and forceful application of principle, a young hopper, a fuck-up, a knucklehead, could bring the heavens, the vast heavens, to their knees…

Carr just went up in my estimation, as would anyone who is given credit by Ta-Nehisi Coates for his craft.

re: #124 Justanotherhuman

It’s fiscal responsibility, GOP nutter style. Chop taxes and claim that you’re doing everyone a favor, but when the economy doesn’t actually respond with more tax revenue (because trickle down has never managed that feat), the response is to slash and burn services or run up debt, because that’s all the GOP seems to know how to do.

It’s what Walker is doing in WI, and it’s what Christie was trying to do in NJ, where he’s had to miss scheduled pension payments to avoid having to raise taxes to cover shortfalls.

It’s the same story in Kansas where Brownback slashed taxes saying it will result in new revenue and jobs, and yet jobs didn’t magically appear and the budget was a mess.

This is the modern GOP - fiscally irresponsible, morally bankrupt, and looking to do for the nation what they’re doing at the state level.

Oh, and it’s frickin’ cold this morning. 3 degrees at the lair, and the wind made it feel a whole lot colder than that.

But the cold weather over the Eastern US is the anomaly. The problem is that pretty much the rest of the world is warmer than it should be. And by a significant margin. Temps in the Northeast do not disprove global warming. Global temps show that something significant is going on.

All those red shades are warmer than average, and there’s a whole lot more of that going on than the blues.

One of the things I’ve noticed quite a bit when visiting various national parks is that there are lots of visitors, but more and more of them aren’t Americans, but tourists from overseas. Now, some of this could be because of when we go - we’re not on a school schedule so we aren’t seeing parents taking their kids on camping trips and the like, but anything to get people to connect with the national parks is a good idea.

People need to see what wonders they have in store. Yellowstone, for instance, is like visiting the Serengeti for its abundance of wildlife, and you can watch predators and prey alike coexist and attempt to survive in harsh conditions. People need to connect with the parks. They need to see what the GOP wants to do - both in limiting the President’s ability to protect national lands (under the Antiquities Act) and in starving the parks of adequate funding to maintain resources (whether it’s visitor centers, roads, roadside descriptions, etc). The GOP has sought to commercialize the parks in ways that threaten their character, and they’re undermining the protections for the parks in various fashions, including attempting to drill and mine right up to park borders (you can go to Canyonlands and Arches and see drill rigs on the horizon and pipelines being built along the roadside (particularly to Islands District)). Then there are air quality issues at the parks, due to emissions upwind.

All of which degrades the quality of the parks.

So, the more people that go to visit and learn what it means to have these gems, the more people will understand the need to protect them in perpetuity.

We stumbled upon the Passport Program at the National Parks, thankfully, when our son was still young. It’s been invaluable!

I highly recommend it for anyone, young or old.

As a result, our son has planned many of the destinations of our vacations. Before he started driving, he say “Hey, there is a National Park near here!”

“Near Here” was often 300 miles away!

:)

If we are to apply Bill O’Reilly’s definition of being under fire, then every New Yorker was in a war zone if they were in the NYC metro area on 9/11. Towers falling, apocalyptic scenes right out of Dante’s Inferno with Lower Manhattan shrouded in toxic clouds, and a death toll that was unimaginable (and still growing as more and more people die from the effects of breathing in the toxic crap at Ground Zero and up on the Hill in Staten Island where the debris was taken to be sorted to try and find still more remains).

All that was missing is the combat badge, though more than a few ppl in the region still suffer from PTSD from the experience.

Add to that the 1993 WTC bombing or the Times Square bombing fizzle that could have had dire consequences.

Or if you’re on the West Coast, anyone who was in LA during the riots.

But that’s not anyone’s accepted definition of a war zone, or combat.

It stretched credulity, and O’Reilly knows it. Which is why he’s furiously spinning in his “No Spin Zone”. But he also knows that Fox wont take the kind of actions that NBC did with Williams. Because if they did, they’d probably have to dock all of their on-air talent for the endless stream of lies - I’m not talking about their opinions mind you. They’re free to express their ignorance all they like. But when it comes to facts, saying up is down, left is right, and that you’re in war zones when you aren’t, those are lies. And cannot and should not be tolerated.

It’s still a firing offense in my book, and O’Reilly should be gone.

I don’t use the Passport, but have a map that I’ve highlight all of our trips, and pretty much every one of our domestic trips involves figuring out where the nearest national park is.

We’ve got a trip planned for later this year that will hit a bunch of Civil War sites through MD, PA, and VA, along with Shenandoah NP.

And I’m already looking ahead to another trip out West - possibly to Oregon and Crater Lake and/or Redwoods.

I’m also looking to hit Great Falls in NJ this weekend (want to catch the nearly frozen falls in person).

We did the “hired guide” at Gettysburg. It was relatively inexpensive and IIRC, they drive your car around and park at various places. Then they give an oral/guided tour of the battlegrounds.

At one point, we were standing on what seemed to me to be well manicured grass and a bit of a hill. The guide said that 5,000 soldiers died, right there where we were standing.

Until that point I was rather bored. There wasn’t much to see, grass, a few trees, bushes, and sky. I don’t care to hear about troop movements—from here to 40 feet away —more grass, few trees …

Then I realized I was standing on blood.

I lost it and ran back to the car and bawled my eyes out.

I was watching an Finding Your Roots with Henry Gates Jr a while ago. One of the people Gates interviewed had a free black ancestor who came to Gettysburg nearly penniless before the war. After the battle, the Army needed someone to bury the dead, because the corpses were creating a health hazard. This man offered to do the job, hired some men, and buried all those soldiers. He ended up being one of the most prosperous free black men in the town.

I have to find out who was the subject of the interview, because I’ve forgotten.

re: #128 lawhawk

Slashing and burning was their goal from the git go. But they can’t just cut things because most people support those things.

So taxes go down, deficit goes up and things get cut. It’s ‘balancing the budget’ which is another one of those concepts people support without understanding what it means.

It’s so the Right can prove that government doesn’t work. They get into office and they make sure it doesn’t work. “Government can’t do anything good because then people might not understand that government is bad, Understand?” as Paul Krugman put it.

Good luck!

That a pure heterosexual male may find them attractive, pick them up in a bar, take them home, and when things get going that pure heterosexual sees a penis and realizes he’s been attracted to and making out with another man. In other words, for people who aren’t secure in their sexuality transgender individuals pose a big risk that they might be exposed as possibly being attracted to the same sex.

No, none of that. She’s 33 so that would be really odd if it was.

I hope it isn’t because 33 is pretty young, but perimenopause can start in mid-thirties. It’s a time of rises and declines in estrogen and progesterone. Only her dr can determine this, so it’s a good thing she’s going.

I had undergone treatments for infertility, but had finally given up. When I tested early and got a positive years later, I immediately went to their office because I knew they could do the blood test then and there and I’d get the answer that day. It confirmed the positive. They then monitored me with HCG tests every other day and ultrasounds. Mine wasn’t doubling like it should have, so there was about a 50/50 chance that I’d have a miscarriage. She made up for lost time because she ended up being born at 9 pounds 14 ounces three days after my due date. LOL.

I would not go there, but when they talk about teaching “critical thinking” they mean “criticizing everything Obama supports”.

I hope not, but with the way the world is going and the thinking in this country, it might not be a big leap.

Let me ask it this way. How many Americans right now would love to see some kind of total elimination of Muslims?

I’m not trying to be overly dramatic, just pointing out that things always start the same way in incremental steps and then along comes the one person, or one instance that kick starts the whole ugly process.

And I do hope no one thinks I am thinking that way myself. I am talking about the ugliness we all are seeing. I bet we would all be surprised how many would answer my question above with a “hell yeah!”

And it is scary how well it is working.

Yeah, that is all it is. Stupid, but it is being taught in many a fundie church. Listen to the judges like Alabama’s Roy Moore and what is going on in Texas.

You know, everyone is worried about Obama not stating we are in a religious war. Seems to me they (fundies) are spoiling for all kinds of wars. That is why they are pissed at Obama. He isn’t calling for that all out war.

They want it bad. What will stop them? Got me, I can’t think like that.

Also that my grandson’s gas tank was open, so I had to go out and deal with it since he’s sleeping, The cap was tight, so I hope it wasn’t tampered with. Locked it up.

OTOH, this is the same neighbor whose car has also been gone into (as well as her apt which she leaves unlocked more often than not), and some of it is the drama since her son has more “frenemies” than not. From now on, all vehicles will be locked!

Out of context it’s pablum.

I usually use Twitter on my iPhone app. Every time I go to the Twitter page on a computer I wonder how people use it. You can’t follow conversations easily, you can’t edit a tweet when RTing. Maybe I don’t understand their GUI but I am lost.

Do all of you use the Twitter GUI?

I can try very hard to accept that not all TPs are racists, really, really hard. Unfortunately I have yet to meet one who didn’t make a seriously ugly racist statement within a few minutes of conversation. Living in Texas, even in the commie bastion of Houston, my sample size is considerable.

And the winner of the “Who will be the first columnist to bring up Cattle Futures” award goes to the Washington Post’s Jennifer Rubin.

This is as clueless as it is typical of Hillary Clinton, who never met anyone whose money she was unwilling to take and never understood the appearance of impropriety (cattle futures, anyone?). What the statement ignores, blatantly so, is that we are not simply talking about any foundation. This is money going to fatten the coffers and fund the lavish travel of a woman who wants to run for president.

As Charles P. Pierce describes Jen’s political savvy:

As we get closer and closer to the 2016 presidential election, it is time once again to keep the ol’ weather-eye on Jennifer Rubin, the Likudnik prom queen and professional Person Who Is Always Wrong. …

You may recall that, throughout the last presidential cycle, Jen forever was telling us that America was moving toward elopement with that hunka-hunka burnin’ love, Willard Romney. That didn’t work out so well. This time, though, Jen’s being cautious about dragging her heart around. …

One thing she does know. Hillary Clinton already has blown it.

Honest question-What then of all these guys that sat far from the fighting in Baghdad, or Kabul, or Saigon and report(ed) from “the war zone”? Must be a hundred guys that should be fired by that measure.

Big difference. There was no war going on Buenos Aires. O’Reilly witness a riot in Buenos Aires and that somehow qualifies as seeing combat.

It’s still sitting back in comfort in a “war zone” far from shots fired. But those other guys are not caught up a temporary outrage media frenzy. Not especially controversial pundits or uber paid anchors with the extra attention that garners.

It’s the “fiend of the week’ ratings game as transparently as can be. The two networks are coworking partners in getting views as much as they are competitors in that marketplace.

No. He wasn’t in a “war zone”. The war was 1,000 miles away and the riot he witnessed was AFTER the war ended. If you can’t see this simple distinction, then I can’t help you. Your attempt to concern troll fucking sucks.
