Video: CBS Staffers and Former Correspondents Strongly Contradict O’Reilly’s “War Zone” Claims

O’Reilly’s stories continue to unravel

There are now seven journalists on the record who were with Bill O’Reilly in Argentina in 1982, and they’re all contradicting his “war zone” stories: CBS Staffers Refute Bill O’Reilly’s ‘War Zone’ Story.

On his show “The O’Reilly Factor” in 2013, O’Reilly told a guest, “I was in a situation one time, in a war zone in Argentina, in the Falklands, where my photographer got run down and then hit his head and was bleeding from the ear on the concrete. And the army was chasing us. I had to make a decision. And I dragged him off, you know, but at the same time, I’m looking around and trying to do my job, but I figure I had to get this guy out of there because that was more important.”

Mother Jones challenged some of these claims. O’Reilly responded by accusing the magazine of trying to smear him to hurt Fox News, and said the report’s co-author, David Corn, is a liar and an “irresponsible guttersnipe.”

Eric Engberg, a CBS correspondent who was also in Buenos Aires at the time, defended Corn in a Facebook post on Friday and said, “It was not a war zone or even close. It was an ‘expense account zone.’”

Longtime NBC News correspondent George Lewis, who was also there at the time, agreed with Engberg, writing on Facebook, “Cushiest war I ever covered.”

Did O’Reilly’s photographer get “run down” and bloodied?

CNN has interviewed seven people who were there for CBS, and none of them recall anyone from the network being injured.

“If somebody got hurt, we all would have known,” Alvarez said.

If O’Reilly worked for a network that was concerned about ethics then he would be in trouble.

2 lawhawk  Feb 22, 2015 2:19:14pm

O’Reilly will continue to claim that everyone else is lying about his claims, that he’s being persecuted here, etc., but the facts are that he lied and was caught.

Own up and go away. Except that this is Fox News we’re talking about. They wont shut him down for any amount of time, even though his actions are firing offenses too - I called for Williams to be fired after he was found to have made stuff up. O’Reilly has done the same thing.

The difference is that NBC isn’t Fox News. Fox means never having to say you’re sorry for lying to the public day-in-day-out.

3 HappyWarrior  Feb 22, 2015 2:19:45pm

If Fox actually cared about ethics, they wouldn’t be Fox.

4 Targetpractice  Feb 22, 2015 2:20:10pm

In a lot of ways, I think this is a waste of time. Rather got the axe during Memogate because CBS could not afford in 2004 to be accused of partisan attacks on Dubya. Williams has been suspended for six months because NBC is afraid of being seen as employing a liar.

Faux, by contrast, doesn’t give a fuck if it has a liar and partisan hack as one of its main draws. If anything, Ailes would actually hurt the network by taking any action against O’Reilly. So Bill might as well just stand up tomorrow night and declare “I’M BULLETPROOF!”

5 sizzzzlerz  Feb 22, 2015 2:23:13pm

Given he works for Faux news, rather than canning him, I expect we’ll be seeing a biopic documenting O’Reilly’s bravery in Argentina when faced with poor room service.

The only way FoxNews will react to this is if they figure that O’Reilly’s $20,000,000 a year doesn’t make dollars and cents. Their captive audience isn’t exactly the prime advertising demographic and I know he has the highest ratings in cable news but I fail to see how he makes them money.

9 Justanotherhuman  Feb 22, 2015 2:33:13pm

Bill O’Reilly called Bob Schieffer an old man over 30 years ago.

13 Targetpractice  Feb 22, 2015 2:35:54pm

We’ve seen this play out at Faux enough times to know it won’t amount to much. O’Reilly will double down on the attacks, going after those who are now calling him on his lies and possibly even attacking CBS. Look for him to bring up the Princetown story that he wanted to do but was shot down to suggest that the network “even then” had a strong liberal bias and that he was forced out because he wouldn’t do the stories they wanted.

14 Justanotherhuman  Feb 22, 2015 2:36:05pm

I can hear Ailes now: “The past is the past. Now let’s move on.”

O’Leilly, as others have stated, will suffer no consequences because of this. In fact, those reporters who were there will be accused of “smearing” him and so, the DeNial River will continue to flow.

That’s another possible angle O’Reilly will go for, trying to argue now after giving Williams the third degree that “Whatever I did in the past doesn’t matter, but liberals want to obsess over what I did 30+ years ago so they don’t have to deal with what’s going on now.”

17 HappyWarrior  Feb 22, 2015 2:38:36pm

Oh I totally expect that and I totally expect tons of bitching to done about the left in this case because it’s the conservative way- When you fuck up, bitch about the left and the right wing audiences will eat it all up.

20 HappyWarrior  Feb 22, 2015 2:42:38pm

Nothing’s going to happen though to O’Reilly. If anything, this will be just another excuse for Fox to whine about the left while skirting the fact that they have never valued journalistic integrity at all at that network. When your network’s founder is a tabloid owner and your president a former Nixon and H.W Bush hatchetman responsible for such lovely gems as the Willie Horton ad, integrity has never been part of the plan. Telling people what they want to hear OTOH.

In fact, now that I think about it, that was something O’Reilly harped on when he launched his ad hominem attack on Corn, that it was “so long ago” that he’d had to dig around in his dusty basement for documents from “33 years ago.” So yeah, now that he’s been pretty much exposed, he’ll go for arguing that the whole thing happened decades ago, nobody really cares about what happened, and the “liberal press” is only bringing it up to take attention off NBC.

anyone notice how O’reilly (with the help of Howard Kurtz and other FOX “personalities”) has cleverly made this controversy not about whether or not O’reilly lied about being in the Falklands (he did), but whether or not Buenos Aires after the end of the war could be considered a combat zone? Now, it obviously was not a combat zone, but its much easier for the rat bastard to make it all about a difference of opinion on what constitutes a combat zone then actually defend what he is really accused of lying about.

He’s reset the argument and has started to patch together his defense. “Even the New York Times said there were gunshots in the air” etc etc. Nevermind that O’reilly actually said that he witnessed people getting gunned down right before his eyes. No…don’t pay attention to that. This is all just semantics (According to shoe shine boy Howie Kurtz). This is all about whether or not guns being fired in the air at protestors is a combat zone.

You gotta hand it to them. These wretched scoundrels know how to play the game. If you’re a right-winger you don’t admit defeat, you don’t apologize, you don’t admit anything. You hit them back and you hit them back hard. Then you get the propaganda machine rolling with the help of a few FOX liberals (what did you think Ailes was paying them so much for? Their opinions? LOL) and you’re home free. The weakened U.S press, not wanting to come off as being seen as left-wing, gives its typical he said, she said BS coverage, and within a news cycle or two, it’s over. The folks are back to watching Miley Cyrus pole dance with a chupacabra.

Meanwhile, flying around the wingnutosphere at supersonic speed, the Politico piece by a general about Obama’s plan to defang ISIS. Shorter: give us a blank check, allow us to mount coups against the Saudis and Turks, and prepare for 30 years of war. Oh yeah, and bring back the draft.

If you have a particularly strong stomach, scroll down to the comments. The anti-war side has been hijacked by Russia Today trolls, screeching about Zionist-controlled media enslaving white Americans into funding Israel’s wars of aggression.

When the hell did the anti-neocon ideology somehow become a hiding place for frickin’ racist shitbags?

The day one of Louisiana’s levee boards filed an environmental damages lawsuit against 97 oil and gas companies, which would become the biggest issue during the last legislative session, Gov. Bobby Jindal issued a scathing response — from Aspen, Colorado.

His first in-depth comments about what impact the collapse of the price of oil was having on the state’s already beleaguered budget came while he was in Washington, D.C.

It should come as little surprise that the state’s business often is conducted from outside Louisiana’s borders.

Jindal, who is flirting with a presidential run, spent about 165 days — or 45 percent — of 2014 in places other than Louisiana. In 2013, he was gone about 74 days.

Yeesh.

Indeed. You wouldn’t believe how I happened upon it.

I was looking at Malcom X’s biography over at Amazon and went to see who had written the 1-star reviews. Reading them I found something familiar:

Truth Revolt? As in Ben Shapiro, Breitbart Truth Revolt?

So I clicked on “See all my reviews,” and found this. Yep, that looked about right for an outfit sympathetic to Geller.

Clicking on his “Public Wish List” gave me his name, which I googled including “truth revolt” as keywords. That led me back to Amazon and a discussion indicating that he was also the author of a book critical of atheism. It also led me to this article on a Christian site. That, in turn, obviously led me to FFAF where. if you look under Resources > Books, you’ll find his book.

It’s crazy how the wingnut crap spreads its tentacles everywhere. That’s why I started cataloging name & orgs and polishing my Google Fu.

There are little threads all over the place, so whenever I see one I immediately begin pulling on it to see where it leads.

I always read the negative reviews on books that involve Islam, Judaism, politics, history, etc. You often learn more about the books from the negative reactions than from the positive ones.

For other stuff, like electronics or software or whatever, I usually go elsewhere for reviews and don’t pay much attention to the ones at Amazon because some of them are so stupid it sets my hair on fire, heh.

They’re living in a world ruled by fear and hatred, and the only thing they know is that everyone and everything is out to get them. Something to watch for this week is the GOP in Congress trying to find someone who will “prove” that NASA and the climatologists for the government were making stuff up about global warming. They’re all on about how adjusting and zeroing out effects of buildings that affect taking readings somehow distorts or increases temperatures.

Yet, the numbers are coming in from all over the world, from different sources, and they corroborate each other.

Warmer and warmer. Even with the cold snap in the East Coast, it’s still warmer for the planet. Again.

Warmer and warmer. Even with the cold snap in the East Coast, it’s still warmer for the planet. Again.

The method for adjusting the temps to better reflect accurate readings was determined decades ago and published in at least one journal. Why are they just discovering this now?

This is like those idiots Anthony Watts and Joseph D’Aleo who published an article that was evidence only that they don’t understand anomalies and elevation adjustments.

That was fun. I just spent more than an hour trying to get my Mac Pro to start up. Finally had to start up in “single user mode” by holding Command-S while booting, then run fsck -fy. Somehow the boot information got hammered - possibly because we had a power glitch in the neighborhood a little while ago.

I wasn’t too worried because I have both a Time Machine backup and a nightly clone backup to an external drive. But what a hassle.

People change. The heartening thing about the whole circle of Muslims coming out to protect a shul in Norway is that they got how many fellow Muslims? More than 1,000. I’d say that’s a step in the right direction. That means that the sentiment was shared by more than a few fellow Muslims, regardless of what they may have believed years before. It’s something that can be built upon for the future. It shows at least there’s hope in some corners of the globe for coexistence and cooperation in the face of hate.

With time comes perspective.

I figured if they were gonna hate me for that, we might as well get it over with from the beginning. I mean seriously, I had to tell myself, “It’s just a blog FFS, what’s the worst that can happen?”

Heh, same here: Registration window—quick, think of a nic!

I was pretty nervous the first time, though I probably didn’t show it. I knew about LGF’s history and avoided it like the plague, but when I saw it had changed I was intrigued. Still, it was kinda like walking into the belly of the beast for me, heh. I basically just closed my eyes, took a deep breath, and jumped in—came right out and said I was Muslim. I figured if the were gonna hate me for that, we might as well get it over with from the beginning. I mean seriously, I had to tell myself, “It’s just a blog FFS, what’s the worst that can happen?

Most everyone was surprisingly friendly. It was damned difficult to keep up with the comments back then—they would fly by at an alarming rate.

I didn’t need to wait for the window to open. I lied my way in.

This is called a Squier Vintage Modified Telecaster Special - a big mouthful that means it’s a Telecaster body with typical Telecaster bridge & bright bridge pickup with a Jazzmaster neck (a bit thicker) and Jazzmaster neck pickup (nice! Almost a P90 type but still very Fender sound). A little bit of overdrive on that 10 watt Peavey and I get a sound like a cross between a surf band and a punk band :D Fit’s my tastes just fine.

I remember watching constantly for the registration window to open. I’m sure I’m not the only one here who’s been reading this blog for years but rarely comments. I’ve been reading since 2008, right after Charles wrote his Declaration of Independence. I didn’t know then how bad the right wing craziness would get. I like to read this blog because there are other Republicans here who’ve been kicked out of their party and don’t really feel comfortable with either the straight Democrats or Libertarians. Proof that people do change their opinions.

You can either reject it utterly and learn what Christlikeness is actually about, or you can embrace it and fall irretrievably into despair and derp. Interesting to look back though, this blog was a tough one to join. You had to have guts, and statements to back it up.

Took me literally years to join because open registrations happened so rarely.

The morning I was able to finally register was a wonderful day for me. And I remember that one of the first welcome hatchling comments said that I had the cutest avatar ever.

And keep their speeches brief.

Now back to practicing. Much more fun than the oscars!

This is from the “I’m an idiot” department: it only recently occurred to me to troll Youtube for specific song lessons. A most recent example is conquering Badfinger’s “Baby Blue”, lately famous as the final piece of music on Breaking Bad.

I had picked up bits and pieces of it, but was just getting completely frustrated with it. One search later, I’ve got four free lessons to show me what I was doing wrong.

I still have a bit of a tin ear, even after all these years. It’s very difficult for me to learn stuff by listening to it. These videos have really helped me either learn new stuff, or show me what the correct way to play songs I’ve been butchering for years.

359 A Cranky One  Feb 22, 2015 7:10:43pm

I first came across LGF while reading articles on creationism. I became interested in the subject years ago when I was considering teaching and there was a push to start teaching creationism in schools (I’ve always considered it nonsense). I’ve learned so much about many different scientific fields from the debunking of creationist claims; it’s become a bit of a hobby. Talk.origins was a regular stop.

But at that time, some of the LGF comments on political posts were enough to keep me away. I wasn’t really interested in discussions with folks for whom evidence and intellectual consistency were unimportant.

I rediscovered LGF again for the same reason I discovered it for the first time, but was shocked at the change. I’ve never joined or commented on any blogs previously but found myself enjoying the comments and the community. It was so refreshing to see disagreement followed by rational discussions, presentation of evidence, and use of logic. I was even more impressed that the community seemed to care about each other. I really see very little of this on other blogs.

I’m very happy to find myself welcome in this community and look forward to interacting with the folks here. Given that I tend to be a strong introvert, that’s more of a compliment than you know. Thanks all!

The right is driven by selfishness and greed. They really can’t understand the concept of concern for others; they seem incapable of empathy. The politicians owned by the rich are more than happy to be advocates for selfishness and greed, two traits that were once considered sins.

So when Sandra Fluke spoke on behalf of others who need birth control medications for reasons other than birth conrol, in the RW mind she wanted BC for herself and hence was a “slut”. When Obama speaks about not making generalizations about Muslims, it must be because he is a secret Muslim. Examples abound. To the RW crowd, it’s all about ME ME.

Heck, even when the Pope speaks of compassion for others he gets labeled a socialist who just doesn’t understand capitalism.

re: #384 A Cranky One

The politicians owned by the rich are more than happy to be advocates for selfishness and greed, two traits that were once considered sins.

Add in their driving need to tout their selfishness and greed as actually being virtues, both in secular ethics and religious morals, and you’ve got their mark.

I spent the day on the whole “Rachel Carson killed millions with the DDT ban” slander. It’s a venerable but telling demonstration of the blossoming of wingnut thinking, and a very successful hoax. It’s been completely forgotten that the idea was first elaborated by an astroturf group exploring “free market solutions” to malaria tied to the American Enterprise Institute.

It’s easy to debunk—the actual content of Silent Spring (notably lacking in calls for bans on any pesticide), the actual content of the Stockholm Convention (a ban on agricultural use of DDT that can be lifted by any state declaring a health crisis…an option immediately exercised by many malarial regions), the epidemiological arguments that led to the reduction of DDT use* (hello, DDT-immune mosquitoes)—yet the lie lurches on.

Why? Because there’s an audience. The audience likes the narrative that the well-intentioned person who asked uncomfortable questions** must be damnably wrong: not just factually inaccurate, but so wrong that is was wrong for them to speak, so wrong that their question is a threat.

Now repeat that pattern for forty years, and you’ve got wingnut culture. Truth is determined by affiliation, in the style of conspiracy theorists: everybody outside the approving set of opinions is a dupe or a monster.

* I should add that part of the reason I’m invested in this is I’ve spent a bunch of time in the malarial world. DDT is still produced and used for indoor residual spraying in India, but not used for agricultural spraying because the latter led to DDT-immune mosquitoes…most notably, in Sri Lanka. I’m directly, personally aware of the process by which the locals…via their own scientific studies…made the call to cut back DDT use.

The whole “Rachel Carson” thing is not just reductively stupid, it’s also dependent on disappearing the autonomous decision-making of dozens of governments, using their own scientist’s analysis…but it works, since they’re brown-people countries that only exist to prove a point about how dumb environmentalists are.

**I only read Rachel Carson because of this hoax. I had no prior impression of her. Her book is about the fact the chemicals are not wizard piss, and chucking them about unthinkingly will have consequences. It does not talk about bans, nor is it focused on DDT.

[oprah] And you get an Oscar and you get an Oscar and you get an Oscar! [/oprah]

445 The Very Reverend Battleaxe of Knowledge  Feb 22, 2015 8:36:49pm

Well, I just watched bits and pieces of the Oscar show—should have had Ted or Marshall hosting instead of Barney.

It’s like every speech hits a different social conservative hot button. Beautiful.

I’m beginning to think it’s a considered strategy—roil the wingnuts into a continuous foaming frenzy so they’re showing their asses all the way to November 2016.

It’s not hard to do that though.

What about Sat? Haven’t seen him around in many moons

453 #FergusonFireside  Feb 22, 2015 8:46:52pm

Ben Affleck and the author turned screenwriter was ROBBED. Gone Girl was to the book good.

Would you laugh if I said the commercials made specially for this show… appealed to me more than the commercials made specially for the superbowl?

Damn. Hope he’s okay. That sucks.

Oh man, Redmayne’s reaction is just awesome.

460 Eclectic Cyborg  Feb 22, 2015 8:53:36pm

I saw that movie, he was fucking incredible. Well deserved.

461 teleskiguy  Feb 22, 2015 8:54:03pm

I notice that Lizards are commenting on the comments section atmosphere and how it’s changed over the years.

I’ve visited LGF everyday for well over ten years. It was hard in the old days to register a LGF account, registration was always closed, so I was relegated to lurker for a number of years.

So many names spring to mind that I don’t see here anymore. MandyManners, Sharmuta, Cato The Elder, Walter L. Newton, Killgore Trout (he just recently left the joint), on and on.

That’s a weird/fascinating feature of LGF. It’s never stagnant, things are always changing.

If nothing else, the community here is as strong as ever. Whenever a Lizard suffers a hardship, they can come here and vent and get wonderful support and feedback from total strangers.

And it sometimes may seem that shit is just getting too fucked up to deal, then I go to LGF and find excellent information and plenty of good humor.

Oh, and the acoustic guitar tag, that’s one of the best things on the internet.

Nope. I kind of watch the Super Bowl for the commercials, and they were teh suck this year.

464 teleskiguy  Feb 22, 2015 8:56:53pm

I can still remember the night I registered at LGF, in my apartment in Gunnison, CO. I felt like I won the lottery.

I guess registration is open in perpetuity.

465 teleskiguy  Feb 22, 2015 8:58:51pm

My Twitter feed is going too fast. Stupid Oscars.

I guess Lady Gaga killed it tonight.
