FCC Classifies Internet Service as a Public Utility

Almost as important as the llama chase

I know the amazing llama chase was huge news today, but this might be even more important: F.C.C. Approves Net Neutrality Rules, Classifying Broadband Internet Service as a Utility.

WASHINGTON — The Federal Communications Commission voted on Thursday to regulate broadband Internet service as a public utility, a milestone in regulating high-speed Internet service into American homes.

Tom Wheeler, the commission chairman, said the F.C.C. was using “all the tools in our toolbox to protect innovators and consumers” and preserve the Internet’s role as a “core of free expression and democratic principles.”

The new rules, approved 3 to 2 along party lines, are intended to ensure that no content is blocked and that the Internet is not divided into pay-to-play fast lanes for Internet and media companies that can afford it and slow lanes for everyone else. Those prohibitions are hallmarks of the net neutrality concept.

This ruling opens the way for communities to build their own Internet access services and frees them from the tyranny of the huge corporations who have no incentive to make things better. It’s a huge win for the citizens of the US, who have lived too long with substandard Internet connection speeds compared to the rest of the world — which means the Republican Party is going to freak out about it.

Kudos! Fostering innovation and entrepreneurs. The internet of things is coming. Online 3d printing. Streaming is becoming our media. 4k/Ultra HD is a bitrate monster. Frankly this just had to happen.

This! This! 100X THIS:

If you can’t see this, or that the proposed Comcast/Time Warner merger would be an anti-competitive clusterfuck, you deserve to have your internet speed throttled.

The FCC would get more attention if they were fury and could be ridden by children at the local fair.

This is something that should have been enacted ages ago. One of the biggest mistakes we made as a nation was buying into the BS (yet again) that private industry could be trusted to self-regulate and that government regulation hurt rather than protected consumers.

All a site has to do is put up some kind of a holding page with a warning on it stating they are down due to the new government regulations and the screaming would begin immediately. Then have that page cycle off and on for a day and the calls to the White House would be epic!

31 rhuarc  Feb 26, 2015 7:11:44pm

The only explanation I have for this is ignorance coupled with ODS (Obama Derangement Syndrome). These people have no idea what net neutrality is and whether it’s good for them or not, but they do know that Obama is for it. Thus they reflexively have to be against it.

I’ve poked fun at some people on FB on a local news station’s story about it. I’ve seen the gamut of reasons to be against going from higher taxes, to internet takeover by government, to stifling regulations, to my favorite—slower internet ala Europe. That last one was the best when I shared a story from the NY Times about internet speed/cost and how the U.S. was lagging behind and the MOLON LABE moron chimed in that the source was’t trustworthy. Obviously he’s never been to Europe.

I just don’t understand it. I wish before today’s ruling that some service provider had blocked access to foxnews.com to demonstrate why we need net neutrality. I think that’s the only that would get through the ignorant brains.

A few months ago I was talking with my Dad. He’s a retired electronics engineer (Commo and Crypto primarily) , and he asked me what the deal is with the net neutrality issue. I explained that basically it was to prevent a provider from providing more band width or favoring one company or content over another. That all traffic had to be granted equal access and a level playing field. I could hear him chewing on that for a moment, and he replied with: “Oh, now I understand why the republicans are dead set against it”. I love that man!

I don’t think so. Llame looks sort of like fake sequins, maybe shiny gold alligator with a very muted pattern …sorta. Shit, that’s hard to explain.

For that dress, the top (bodice) almost looks like a mesh, to give it a strapless feel. The rest looks old and very worn. Some areas (the smaller bands) looks like ribbon while other areas (the wider ones) look like lace.

The debate going on with the Elon James White/Mikki Kendall twitter crowd is simply head scratchingly bizarre. “Intersectionality” seems to be the new sociology buzzword. That along with “erasure”.

Inartful comments at a backstage Oscar presser are one thing, but the folks who need righteous outrage will not be denied.

The only reason Republicans are against net neutrality is because Obama is for it. I mean, fuck, c’mon, look at Matt Drudge’s skimpy Twitter account.

Fucking delusional.

What’s the old joke? Obama should give a speech where he tells people to stop drinking water, then evolution can take its course.

I think that was proven when the usual suspects in and outside of Congress responded to Obama’s declaration for support with reflexive opposition that showed they had no idea what NN was. I’m looking at you Ted and Rush.

This goes waaaaaay back. I joined the first chapter of NOW that was just forming when I moved to Houston in 1973. I was, in fact, the first chapter secretary. We were all white women. Many of us were concerned about the lack of WOC and did our best to be inclusive but there just wasn’t any interest because WOC didn’t see us addressing what they felt were their specific issues.

We argued that issues of equality and equal opportunity were every woman’s issues, something I believed then and now. Yes, WOC have greater burdens without question and additional battles to fight - I never saw a reason why we couldn’t be supportive of those as well under a larger umbrella but others felt that fighting too many battles on too many fronts at once would dilute the efforts so that nothing would get done.

I got tired of the internal battles finally, since because of them little did get done and I felt like I could be more effective elsewhere. It saddens me to see this same battle still waging.

She probably selected “outdoor shade” but shot under “tungsten.” The camera internals think the subject is being lit by the blue sky, no direct sunlight, but in reality it’s being lit by a very “warm” low color temp tungsten filament. So the camera brain compensates by clipping out a shit load of the blue from the image thinking that it’s making everything neutral, but it’s really just pumping in a crapload of yellow into an image already lit by yellowish light. So the blue in the dress gets mostly cancelled out and only a bit of it remains. Since everything is slightly overexposed the areas in which the “black” goes anywhere above a zero value shift significantly yellow as well.

There’s still some yellow/gold contamination on the photo on the right. R56 G44 B30. A testament to how badly shifted the original image is. If the lighting and white balance were matched then those numbers would all be approximately equal. In a balanced set up “black with detail” and black over exposed into gray are still neutral. That’s not what happened here.

There’s still some obvious blue in the “white” areas. But the people who saw “gold” saw it because that’s what the file said was there. The numbers can be wrong, but they don’t lie.

153 wheat-dogghazi-bola-trality  Feb 27, 2015 3:03:08am

The IRS’s inspector general confirmed Thursday it is conducting a criminal investigation into how Lois G. Lerner’s emails disappeared, saying it took only two weeks for investigators to find hundreds of tapes the agency’s chief had told Congress were irretrievably destroyed.

Investigators have already scoured 744 backup tapes and gleaned 32,774 unique emails, but just two weeks ago they found an additional 424 tapes that could contain even more Lerner emails, Deputy Inspector General Timothy P. Camus told the House Oversight Committee in a rare late-night hearing meant to look into the status of the investigation.

“There is potential criminal activity,” Mr. Camus said.

BERLIN — Germany’s senior Jewish leader is suggesting that Jews shouldn’t wear the traditional skullcap (kippa) in areas with large Muslim populations.

Josef Schuster, the head of the Central Council of Jews, told rbb Inforadio Thursday that Jews in Germany generally feel safe, though security measures need to be evaluated frequently.

Schuster says that “hiding is not the right way” of dealing with worries about anti-Semitism.

But he says it’s right to ask whether, in areas with high Muslim populations in Berlin and elsewhere, “it really makes sense to identify oneself as a Jew by wearing a kippa, for example, or whether it’s better to wear different headgear there.”

ynetnews.com

This reminded me of something I read earlier about an experiment that a Swedish journalist conducted in Malmö:

Over the past few years, the Swedish city of Malmo has earned a reputation for anti-Semitism. Members of Malmo’s small Jewish population say that walking in some of the city’s Muslim neighborhoods wearing a skull cap, a kepah, is to risk verbal abuse and possibly worse. Well, that risk has now been documented by Swedish television journalist Petter Ljunggren. Ljunggren wore a cap and also a Jewish star pendant in Malmo while secretly filming. One scene captures him fleeing a group of increasingly agitated young men as eggs are thrown at him from nearby windows. Later, a young man from that neighborhood describes how on that night, he’d gotten a text telling him to egg the Jews.

So the problem does exist and Schuster has a point. That said, the bigotry of some is now being used to fuel the general anti-Muslim/anti-immigrant sentiment, so it bears to quote what the reaction to that segment was:

Oh, the reactions were overwhelming really. I didn’t realize that I would get so many reactions. It was not only in the papers and in the media but also debates, you know, in the social medias - a lot of comments. And you could see it’s a very sensitive subject. And it’s a subject engaging people. And I must tell you a wonderful reactions. The representatives of the Muslim population in Malmo actually went to the rabbi, who is harassed. They went to him with flowers and a letter where it said, Malmo wouldn’t be whole without you. So, I mean, that’s a very positive reaction of course to my documentary

Heh.

IRS watchdog investigating the disappearance of emails connected to former IRS director Lois Lerner tells House Oversight Committee they are looking into possible criminal activity - @cnnbrk
read more on cnn.com

(snip)

“There is potential criminal activity,” Treasury Deputy Inspector General Timothy Camus told the House Oversight Committee Thursday.

“Camus did not elaborate on who may have committed possible criminal acts. And, he cautioned that the investigation is not complete and cautioned against drawing conclusions until all the facts are in.

“What we’re looking at is potential criminal wrongdoing. This has the looks, feel and smells of being criminal. And the IG confirmed tonight that’s what they’re looking into,” House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz told CNN after the hearing.” More

Of course, Chaffetz is going to have his own agenda. Let the truth come out, though.

Don’t be too hard on Jason Chaffetz. His openly acknowledged inspiration as Oversight Committee Chairman is the liberal (now-retired) Henry Waxman. So far, he has gone with a “more substance, less noise” compared to Darryl Issa. Chaffetz will go after Obama, to be sure, but he’s not going to go after utter BS.

IG Camus can trust Chairman Chaffetz to help him get this rock of an investigation up the hill. ;)

The House GOP is beclowning itself again. Its come up with a plan to fund DHS for only three weeks so that the circus can resume all over again in March. House Democrats will oppose it, which means there is a good chance that Boehner will once again be humiliated by his own caucus rejecting his proposal. This will force him to rely on Democrats, again, to pass full year funding of DHS. Ironically, its Boehner’s willingness to be used as a punching bag for his far right members to take their impotent rage out on that keeps him in the Speaker’s chair.

Just saw that one a few minutes ago. I really wish that these people recover, but WTF did you think was going to happen?

It’s just absolutely insane. I can’t imagine what the thought process was:

1) I will only purchase health insurance in a non-ACA environment, in which it is significantly more expensive, and I run the risk of being refused a policy due to a preexisting condition.

2) These people think that they are going to charity their way out of this hole, like they’re doing now. Which again brings up the whole hypocrisy of the conservative attitude for asking for help: look down their noses at people who seek assistance, until they’re the ones doing it.

3) Go in with the attitude of that’ll never happen to them.

This is why Republicans, as a whole, are become rapidly unfit to help run this country, practically at any level. Their take on big picture issues like healthcare border on naive and childish.

To be fair, telling them to get a better job was nonsense for years. But now Americans actually are quitting crappy jobs to get better ones because the job market has improved so much. That is why low wage retailers like Walmart and TJMaxx are finally having to give raises because the high turnover is killing their business. What the other sites I read were critical about was that it seemed Arquette didn’t think that POC and the LGBTQ communities were not already acting on behalf of women, literally because of intersectionality. So her comment was seen as ‘All y’all need to start looking out for white women.’ She probably didn’t intend that, so I’m sure she wouldn’t be upset for someone to point it out to her. Her twitter defenders went to the ‘well I’ve been helping YOU PEOPLE for so long route’, which then made me go get the popcorn. I actually saw an allegedly long time progressive claim she had never benefited from white privilege, or if she had it was unintentional. She ended up having to delete the comments on that post.

Oh, and the GOP is about to shut down DHS, and some of them are saying that’s no big deal.

It’s not surprising that is the case, considering that the GOP had no problem shutting down government back in 2013. This party has every intention on shredding government by hook and crook. It’s in their DNA, and if they shut down DHS, they don’t care that the essential workers are going to go without pay while working either.

Because the GOP doesn’t care about workers’ rights either given their willingness to gut employee protections across the board, refusing to raise the minimum wage, opposing ACA, opposing sick leave, parental leave, etc.

It’s not a new word, but why did anyone think that this academic term has any relevance to what Arquette said? I’ve seen people willfully misinterpret her words, e.g. that her mentioning “women” and “gay people” individually meant that by women she only meant straight women - even though her logical operator “or” was obviously inclusive (think Venn diagrams), not exclusive. Logic 101 fail.

that it seemed Arquette didn’t think that POC and the LGBTQ communities were not already acting on behalf of women, literally because of intersectionality

Maybe it seemed that way to those who had never actually read what she said? Because she started with the group “women” and by this mislogic she also said that women were not already acting on behalf of women.

Could it be that all this brouhaha is because some people simply have awful comprehension skills?

PS: All that aside, am I the only one that thinks that using abbreviations like “PoC” and “WoC” to describe groups of people is denigrating, even if unintentionally? Is it really that hard to type out “women of color”?

Is that dress blue/black, or white and gold.

I vote… fugly. /

Seriously, that’s an awful photo via a crappy phone camera and the lighting is why some people might be mistaken as to the color.

It is blue/black.

Yes, it is fugly, however, it is not just a crappy pic. My daughter sent that thing to me last night. I’ve got a nice experimental group of 5 at my house. Mr. and my eldest son both see it as blue and black. Youngest son and I see only white and bronze. Daughter who sent it can see both, depending on the lighting.

Eldest son stuck the damned thing in Paint to show me the actual colors using that grab a sample of the color and drag it off somewhere away from the fugly dress tool. (I’m sure there’s a better name for that tool, but not enough coffee yet). Anyway, it is NOT the crappy phone camera and lighting. It’s the cones in our eyes. We can’t do subtractive mixing. The white is wedgewood blue, and the bronze is charcoal, greenish black.

And yeah. I feel all inferior now.

Since everything is slightly overexposed the areas in which the “black” goes anywhere above a zero value shift significantly yellow as well.

re: #240 Prof. Backpfeifengesicht, PhD

It’s not a new word, but why did anyone think that this academic term has any relevance to what Arquette said? I’ve seen people willfully misinterpret her words, e.g. that her mentioning “women” and “gay people” individually meant that by women she only meant straight women - even though her “or” logical operator was obviously inclusive (think Venn diagrams), not exclusive. Logic 101 fail.

I’m not sure how that is a logic fail. Here is the direct quote:

It’s time for all the women in America, and all the men that love women and all the gay people and all the people of color that we’ve all fought for — to fight for us now!

She set up distinct groups: women, men that love women, gay people, people of color. Inclusive language in that context would be along the lines of ‘Everyone in America, no matter your race, gender identity, or sexual orientation…’. I agree that in a Venn diagram those groups intersect. That is actually the point of her critics.

Also, I disagree that it is an academic term in the sense that it is only useful in an academic context. The whole point of making that term commonplace is so that it draws more people into these issues. Intersectionality means that everyone should care about the rights of everyone else, which I assume is one of the planks of the progressive movement.

I just think it fascinating that this whole argument started over nuance in language, but then some fairly prominent people got real ugly (full disclosure: I don’t think Elon James White is one of the people who got ugly).

It has been criticized for championing alleged senior al-Qaeda member Anwar al-Awlaki, who has been linked to various terrorists and who counselled two of the 9/11 hijackers. He was invited to address Cageprisoners’ Ramadan fundraising dinners in 2008 and 2009, and Cageprisoners features much material about him on its website.[3]

Arguing over the political savvy of an actress is like paying to see Bernie Sanders perform Nabucco twice.

I don’t think it was her point to appeal to everyone. I think it is clear from her list of groups that her point was to appeal to what she sees as a naturally progressive base.

We continue to confuse actors with politicians all the time. To the point that we even elect them to public office. We really need to learn the distinction between entertainers and leaders.

That is true only if you are unaware or ignore the interaction between white women and women of color in the feminist movement.

Arguing over the political savvy of an actress is like paying to see Bernie Sanders perform Nabucco twice.

I agree, however WATCHING people argue over the political savvy of an actress is like paying to see someone GOOD perform something GOOD. Also, I really don’t think her words were more than awkward framing, and the original critique was just that she chose her words poorly. It’s blown up mostly because some of her defenders have large platforms and defended her unnecessarily and just…not well.

268 Nyet  Feb 27, 2015 7:29:49am
After the Osama bin Laden was killed in an American raid in May 2011, Cageprisoners published an editorial written as news satire. Dated 15 May 2021, it announced “American War Criminal Barack Obama has been killed by Pakistani security forces in the UK.” [26]

Once again: there is no implication in her listing of groups that they do not intersect. This does not depend on whether there are tensions between white and non-white feminists.

So on top of Scott Walker’s other budget insanities, which include $300 million higher education cuts while providing $250 million in loans to build a stadium for a billionaire, he’s calling on colleges and universities to stop reporting sex assaults on campus.

Wait. What?

This is the GOP “leader” of the day.

277 Lidane  Feb 27, 2015 7:41:44am

*headdesk*

What that means is Republicans are going to find a way to continue paying subsidies to the estimated 7.5 million Americans who receive taxpayer-funded help to pay their insurance premiums through the federal Obamacare exchange.

The prospect of seeing those people lose their subsidies — even though some have received them for a short period of time, and even though Obamacare has imposed burdensome costs on many other Americans — is just too much for Republican lawmakers to risk.

So if you’re just going to pay the subsidies anyway, what the fuck has been the goddamn point of almost 60 attempts to repeal the law? Why bother with lawsuits or any of it?

Assholes.

I think that’s their only problem with ACA. OBAMA MAY GET CREDIT FOR DOING SOMETHING GOOD, WE CAN’T HAVE THAT. You know what they could have done but they didn’t because they’re cowards and beholden to a base of petty bigots, they could have supported ACA when it was in Congress. But nah they have to be pathetic hacks because of their lunatic base that hates anything Obama proposes.

re: #277 Lidane

Because Obamacare doesn’t have quite the ring that say RomneyCare would.

They hate the fact that it was a Democrat who enacted legislation that was modeled entirely on a GOP idea and the whole individual mandate was modeled on the Heritage plan for personal responsibility.

But the moment Obama tied his support to it, the GOP turned it into a shitshow of epic proportions and that it must be destroyed at all costs, even though the preexisting system of health insurance was a total failure and uninsureds were driving hospitals to bankruptcy and pushing all those costs on to those who have insurance and the means to pay.

The ACA begins a process of transparency on costs, which in theory should help reduce costs since you can now see what procedures and items cost before you use them. That’s a work in progress, but getting more people into private insurance (which the ACA does through marketplace insurance) and through Medicaid expansion (which most GOP states have so far refused to do) means more people are insured when they have to engage a health practitioner. And those people can now see doctors before minor issues become major expenses, they aren’t refused insurance because of preexisting conditions, and dependents can stay on parents’ insurance until age 26.

The GOP wants to undo all of that, all to get Obama’s name off the program.

I used to joke that if Romney won in 2016, the first and only legislation he would demand and get from Congress is a rename of Obamacare to Romneycare, and the GOP would drop the issue entirely. Then again, the GOP is that destitute of facts, logic, and compassion, that they’d simply repeal Obamacare without any alternatives - and that’s their current situation. Their alternative is vaporware and malware masquerading as rhetoric.

The tension that exists between white and non-white feminists is literally that in the past white feminists have intentionally or unintentionally excluded non-white feminists. So when her backstage comments are parsed through that lens by people who own that point of view, her comments were viewed by them as worthy of criticism.

Again, the factual part of what you say is undeniable, yet I don’t see how the racial [and not only racial, but also, e.g., cis/trans] tensions inside the feminist movement have a bearing on whether PA’s language was exclusive or inclusive. (Note also that the criticism was not exclusively about race.) The critics that I read were having a problem specifically with her language:

slate.com

Where to begin? Perhaps with pointing out that “gay people” and “people of color” are both categories that include women

(And PA didn’t claim anything that would contradict that.)

washingtonpost.com

Nevertheless, Arquette’s comments are problematic. Arquette mentions four groups: “women,” “all the men that love women,” “gay people,” and “people of color.” It’s clear that Arquette’s notion of “women” refers to straight white women. By segmenting the last two groups in these comments, Arquette excludes queer white women, women of color, and queer women of color. Furthermore, Arquette claims “we” [white women] have fought for these people, and she insists that now these people must fight for “us” [white women].

(None of this is evident in PA’s speech.)

but sometimes people can’t accept any criticism, no matter how tiny. Ah well.

It wasn’t a tiny criticism. The headlines of the above 2 articles: “Patricia Arquette’s Feminism: Only for White Women” and “Patricia Arquette’s remarks explain why some black women don’t call themselves feminists. Too often when a white feminist says “we,” she doesn’t mean women of color.”

They basically accused her of bigotry. I don’t care about your “lens” when you do that without having very good grounds for that.

They are convinced Scott Walker is electable because he wins in Wisconsin. Frankly, I don’t see how the math allows any Republican to win, barring an economic downturn before the election. To win, a Republican would have to get a percentage of the white vote they haven’t gotten since Reagan ran, and does anyone really think Hillary will get a smaller percentage of the white vote than Obama did in 2012 when the economy was crappy?

I think you’re right. The guy wasn’t until last year the longest tenured governor without having some people skills. I think Obama would have beaten Perry though but Perry definitely would have gotten more of the base out.

They’re joined by a large number of Congress critters, who either don’t understand what NN is, or choose not to.

CNBC had a useful graphic yesterday, showing Netflix and Amazon as big semis on a highway and low-bandwidth users as small cars sharing the same highway. With NN, the big vehicles can’t be restricted to a more expensive “toll road,” or forced to slow down because the speed limit is lower.

It’s not a perfect analogy, but Ma and Pa Kettle back home on the farm might grasp the idea better with it.

Maybe Al Franken should draw a freehand diagram (like his US map) to ‘splain it to the dolts in simple, simple terms.

Of course, Al’s word would be taken seriously by the right wing idjits//////

Ryan didn’t help Romney win WI. Walker could easily lost WI. Presidential elections are different than presidential. Walker brings little to the party.

True points but Walker has at least the record of having won statewide in WI. I think Ryan, all you really need to know about him is he’s never pursued the Senate or Governorship in Wisconsin. I think Ryan knows his appeal is limited to his congressional district and Ayn Rand fans. Ryan also is not running for president. His star I think really waned after losing with Mitt.

402 Mattand  Feb 27, 2015 8:45:28am

re: #288 lawhawk

I cannot tell you how many times that I’ve tried to explain this to people, only to have them dismiss as a partisan crank. And these are the vaunted “independent” voters who supposedly posses the wisdom to vote intelligently on all issues, and will guide our great republic into a glorious future.

Americans hate nuance and education with the passion that most house cats have to someone giving them a bath. To paraphrase a graphic someone posted yesterday, Idiocracy was a movie, not a how-to manual.

From the article:

The usual suspects, Muslim Jew-haters and extremists. It’s better without them. Back in 2006, I had the honor to be present in the Congress when the Israeli Prime Minister (then Ehud Olmert) addressed the Congress. I was not a fan of his, but it was thrilling. Yeah the guy has some humility. Surprising coming from a man who lied about his running acumen. It actually is pretty amazing how quickly one can lose their star with the right wing base. It wasn’t even four years ago that Marco Rubio was someone thought a good fit for Mitt’s running mate and now he’s pretty much persona non grata with that same element that loved him when he beat Crist in the primary because he had a brief moment of reason on immigration. Who knows, maybe in four years, we’re talking about Ted Cruz as someone who lost his way with the nuts? Hahaha maybe not, Ted Cruz is one of the most craven Republicans in the Senate.

I guess my point is that Walker doesn’t even guarantee WI. He would have to fight for it. This is not great way to start. Of course, Jeb doesn’t have a lock on Florida or Christie on NJ. Perry may have Texas locked up, but that really doesn’t help him too much. I really don’t see Walker adding much to a national election.
