Rand Paul.

Which FP position will he take today? Dovish Libertarian or Hawk. Or any at all?

I was surprised at how many non-SF movies he had directed, including the remake of Three Men and a Baby.

He had COPD. He had smoked heavily until about 30 years ago, but the damage was done.

Two hands, with four fingers each divided into two sets of two fingers, is the symbol of a priestly blessing — this signifies a Kohen, a descendant of the biblical high priest Aaron.

Leonard Nimoy supposedly is a Cohanic descendant. This is where he got the idea for the Vulcan salute.

Ah yes activist judges or as we know them, judges that rule against Rand’s ideology. Sorry Rand, it doesn’t work that way. Either judges are lifelong appointees until retirement or they’re term limited. You can’t put term limits on those you disagree with you fucking totalitarian hack. Glad Rand’s showing the totalitarianism that exists within his ideology there though.

Not a single example of lower tax rates resulting in higher tax revenues.

Heck, Kansas just disproved this all over again by chopping taxes and watching revenues fall off a cliff without creating the jobs or economic growth they claimed would come from all the other states nearby that have higher rates.

He told them he couldn’t believe that we’d so uncritically accepted the state’s view of the murder—even though our stories were backed up by our own research, our unique reporting and our reading of court documents.

re: #29 lawhawk

Not a single example of lower tax rates resulting in higher tax revenues.

Heck, Kansas just disproved this all over again by chopping taxes and watching revenues fall off a cliff without creating the jobs or economic growth they claimed would come from all the other states nearby that have higher rates.

Beg to differ, there is one (and only one) example.

When the Kennedy admin reduced the highest marginal rate from 92% to 70% (and also reduced some of the lower brackets), revenues did go up. Because

1) people whose huge income was from sporadic chunks of work (prizefighters, Vegas headliners, etc) were motivated to work more

2) people whose huge income was the continuing flow from grandpa’s work (Fords, Rockefellers, etc) stopped pouring everything into tax-free foundations. They suddenly had massively more taxable income.

3) the “regular rich” (doctors, lawyers, successful entrepreneuers) just had a lot more to spend, and they spent it on American-made goods from companies that had to increase pay scales to get enough workers to meet demand (Europe and Asia were still rebuilding from WWII, not making a lot of exports, no competition).

This was of course a once and only once phenom — when your reduction gives people 2 or 3 times as much take-home pay, that’s a huge increase in what they’ll spend or invest. Reducing rates from 35% to 28% only gives people 10% more take-home, which for above-median earners doesn’t affect their consumption much at all.

225 CuriousLurker  Feb 27, 2015 11:29:19am

OT (sort of): Speaking of lunacy, there’s a new book out about Anders Breivik by a Norwegian journalist & writer named Åsne Seierstad. Some people are gonna be really pissed that they are mentioned as Breivik’s “inspiration”.

From the review, emphasis added:

Around 2006, he decided to go it alone. From then on, he lived almost entirely in his imagination, but his fantasies were still linked to the real world of politics and ideology. Breivik became obsessed with the idea that the west was at war with Islam. Inspired by websites, such as Robert Spencer’s Jihad Watch, or the Neo-Nazi Stormfront, books by the US journalist Bruce Bawer, speeches by the Dutch politician Geert Wilders, or a Norwegian blogger, named Fjordman, Breivik transformed himself into a character in cyberspace called Andrew Berwick.

As Berwick, he wrote a long manifesto entitled “2083: A European Declaration of Independence”, full of bellicose talk, cobbled together from his favourite websites, about the need to save western civilisation from being conquered by Islam.

In fact, however, Muslims were not the main targets of Berwick’s war, in which he dreamed of martyrdom and murder. The main enemies of Berwick’s Knights Templar, of which he himself was the “Justicious Knight Commander”, were “cultural Marxism”, “multiculturalism” and the “cultural elites” who collaborated with the “Islamisation” of the west. I hadn’t heard of Åsne Seierstad before, but it looks like she has several books I would love. I’m debating whether or not to buy the Brievik one as I’m already juggling several books and it like 500+ pages—not ridiculousy long, but more than what I can read in an afternoon. It sounds really interesting.

Update on the Missouri spree killing with nine dead in total (including gunman).

It appears that the shooter came upon his mother, who appears to have died of natural causes at one of the locations, and then proceeded to shoot people at other locations (six locations in total).

There were three women and four men fatally shot, ranging in age from their early 40s to mid 60s. Authorities say several of the victims are related — including a husband and wife — but they haven’t confirmed a connection with the gunman.

A woman who survived being shot told police she knew who the gunman was and gave police his name. As word spread of the killings, some additional victims were discovered when worried family members went to homes to check on their well-being, Missouri Highway Patrol Sgt. Jeff Kinder said in an interview. Police also went door-to-door to check for victims.

Authorities aren’t releasing names of the victims until they notify relatives. Tyrone is an unincorporated rural community of about 20 people.

Before the suspect was found dead, police went to his mother’s home to see if he was there, the coroner said. They found her dead on the couch of apparent natural causes, Whittaker said. It appears she had been dead at least 24 hours, he said. She was in her 70s and had been under a doctor’s care for an illness, and there was no visible sign of trauma, so Whittaker believes she died of her illness.

The woman has the same surname as some of the victims, he said. Investigators suspect her death may have sparked the man’s murder spree.

“We’re speculating that he came home and found her deceased and then for whatever reason went on a rampage and started killing people,” Whittaker said. “This is just so strange. Right now, with the shooter dead, we don’t know. Is there something that sparked this? We’re still in the information-gathering stage.”

Bizarre. And another community will grieve over senseless killings.

Close the embassy and expel their diplomats until they stop acting like John Boehner’s adopted children.

It’d be political suicide, but imagine the shock it would send.

R.I.P., Leonard Nimoy. You really lived with dignity and grace in your post-Spock era, and we’ll all miss you.

Glad you decided to take the role of Spock, after worrying that it might be “too freaky”. (After being in Radar Men from the Moon.)

Nitpick: “B.C.” and “A.D.” are part of the date. I think you mean “before/after the numerical representation of the year”.

Israeli drivers pay $9.28 a gallon for premium gasoline, compared to $4.89 in China and $3.75 in the United States, according to Bloomberg.

Seems to me then that Bibi’s government should kindly shut up about our oil prices. Maybe just maybe Obama knows what he’s doing. Boehner’s got enough trouble with his own caucus to worry about what trouble he’s getting into with Netanyahu.

The nitwit can’t get out of his own way, and his caucus is filled with a bunch of splitters who can’t accept that part of the job of a politician is to negotiate and accept something less than unconditional surrender from everyone else. And when they can’t get unconditional surrender, they choose scorched earth tactics that leave no good outcome (like a shutdown).

We’ve seen this movie enough times to guess how it goes: Dems refuse to sign onto the three week extension bill, Boehner tries to push forward with it under the assumption that enough TPers will sign onto it to avoid embarrassing him. They won’t, leaving him at the 11th hour with a bill that’s doomed to failure, so he pulls it and puts up the Senate bill that passes with mostly Dem support. The TPers make a lot of noise about deposing him, but realize there’s no “true conservative” who has enough votes to replace him, so they just continue to rattle their sabers.

I figure we’ll know the answer by the middle of the night. If he hasn’t pulled the three-week bill by then and scheduled the Senate bill, then he intends to push this past the deadline. If he has, then he’ll try to squeak in passage and signature so that he can say that the GOP has kept its promise not to allow any further shutdowns.

Yeah pretty much. I really do worry about Christian theocrats getting their way in the US much more than I do Muslim ones. Why because there’s a lot more of them and they have politicians willing to do their bidding. We’ll get “Shariah Law” the same way Sinclair said we’ll get fascism.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the difference between the wingnuts and the Taliban is the invisible sky god they pray to. Any time someone brings up the parallels between Christianity and Islam, they like to make a lot of noise about Christ and his teachings. But don’t be fooled, the only part of the Bible they take seriously is the Old Testament and the idea of a narrow-minded, bloodthirsty God.

Except none of them are fooled, they know the cave is coming. That he’s put up a stop-gap bill and is trying to float a conference committee is a signal that he knows he just doesn’t have the support for an all-or-nothing shutdown bid. The question is how long he intends to keep up the charade.
