RIP, Leonard Nimoy

So long, Mr. Spock
Arts • Views: 28,118

Today we have to say goodbye to the man who breathed life into Star Trek’s Mr. Spock, one of the most memorable characters in the history of television — the great Leonard Nimoy.

President Obama pays tribute:

“Cool, logical, big-eared and level-headed.” Hmm, that sounds kind of familiar.

Leonard Nimoy Showed Us What It Truly Means To Be Human

The NPR article also gets at a couple of other important points about Nimoy’s portrayal of Spock: his half-human heritage, which contributes to his complicated, divided nature but also has helped to inspire other mixed-race people in the United States. And his commitment to the philosophy of IDIC (Infinite Diversity In Infinte Combination), which makes Spock a unique symbol of acceptance and curiosity. These are qualities that Nimoy embodied, and they helped make Spock a lasting icon.

Io9’s obituary is very good, as is the imbedded video of NPR’s Artist Talk between Nimoy and Pharell.

Wow, I’m shocked, Boehner actually had the balls to put the stopgap bill to a vote. Either he believed he really had the votes or he figured he needed the cover for the cave.

Actually, it wasn’t the Senate bill that he put up

The Department of Homeland Security appeared headed for a partial shutdown Friday as House leaders failed to garner enough votes to pass a stopgap measure to keep the agency funded for three more weeks.

By a 203-224 vote with most Democrats and four dozen Republicans voting against, the House rejected the short-term measure to keep the agency funded through March 19.

About midway through debate in the House on Friday, it became clear that Republican House leaders were scrambling to attract enough votes from their own GOP caucus to pass the bill. Democrats voted against the stopgap measure, arguing that the House should instead pass a bill that the Senate approved earlier Friday.

Listen, seriously, if you work as a brand ambassador for a major high end photographic equipment manufacturer don’t just assume that Photoshop’s color picker numbers are going to back up your raw assertion about that stupid fucking dress. And don’t then lie about what those numbers actually say without checking them first, and then tell a bunch of industry pros that if they don’t see what you see that they need to get their monitors calibrated, or that the “cones in their eyes” aren’t “high functioning.” You’re in a room containing actual scientists, most of whom have laptops and will call you on your BS in front of every fucking body.

“Russia denies pledge to release hunger-strike Ukrainian pilot

When I was younger I worked at a bar across the street from the Boston Garden. The owners were from the same West End neighborhood as Nimoy, a neighborhood that was razed during urban renewal in the 1960s. The establishment, which was right out of a Scorcese movie, served as a kind of West End community center in exile.

So, whenever Nimoy was in Boston, he would always stop by and have a drink or three. He was an incredibly nice, regular guy. It didn’t impress me that much at the time, but a few years later I started working in the events business, coming into regular contact with neurotic celebrities, and realizing how rare and special that was.

RIP.

Not to mention, as Islamophobic as some in the American Public is, Russia is way worse. For every instance of an Islamophobic Murder there has been in the US, there have been thousands, maybe millions in Russia, and it’s former imperial holdings.

I think a lot of Lizards would share your dislike of the Russian government but most of us manage to not cross the line into advocating for the potential deaths of thousands of innocents.

Seriously, here’s a simple test. Before you post something, pretend it was someone else saying the exact same thing about Muslims. If you would be pissed off by it, posting it is probably not a good idea.
