While he unfortunately has half of a point about some of the battalions, most Ukrainian soldiers are not neo-Nazis. But he would have been against the Lend-Lease too, because Stalin was a bad guy and stuff (no matter what the big picture indicates).

Yes, there are some far right elements in the Ukraine resistance. But Greenwald never summons up a single word of criticism for Putin, ever. He even cites Russia Today in this horrible piece.

Actually, back then Greenwald would have been one of Stalin’s ‘Useful Idiots’. Glenn Greenwald is defined not be where he fits on a left-right continuum, but by his adolescent rebellion against the United States.

I think this is what happened:

He was too cheap to actually buy a ticket—figured he’d hang around the free venues and all of his “fans” would flock to him. Obviously, that didn’t happen; nor did he apparently get to meet any of his idols (Cruz, O’Keefe) or his enemies (Losche)—there would have been numerous selfies. I think he hung around the fringes, was basically ignored by everybody—those who knew who he was and avoided him, and those who hadn’t a clue who was, and were probably better off for it.

Wait a moment. He was a reporter at CPAC.

You’ve got 12-15 former/current/future pretenders to the GOP nomination, and he couldn’t break a single piece of news about well, anything?

Are you kidding me?

You’re at a conference that should be in your wheelhouse. These are the interviews/QA sessions you need to be attending and asking serious questions of the candidate.

Yet, all we got is a big fat zero, and a couple of selfies with a Jezebel reporter and a group of right winger wannabe reporters.

That all tells me that he’s still not ready for prime time, and no one is giving him the time of day, not even one that’s published a book that sits on clearance racks and is used as a door stop at a door stop factory.

Just FYI, Daesh is now calling for the assassination of two American Muslim scholars who have criticized them, the one that is the subject of the article resides in Memphis, TN. Sorry for the tiny snippet, but the source article is very short (and accompanied by a video):

“I was one two clerics that they targeted in their latest magazine, two American clerics, and basically called for my assassination,” said Qadhi. “And they have said this is an act of of worship…..that if somebody kills me, God is going to reward them.”

The Magazine calls for professor Qadhi’s death and heavenly reward, followed by a photo, which states that Qadhi spoke against the terrorist attack on French magazine Charlie Hebdo. […]

Meanwhile, back home at the South Carolina Democratic Party Issues Conference:

Didn’t get to spend “cocktail time” with Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, as she had to stay in DC Friday night because of the asshole 1-week vote. She did make it today to do the keynote, and was pretty funny as she gave a rundown on the Republican 2016 clown-car participants.

Martin O’Malley was also there, and he was really good. Got my picture taken with him—I look terrible, he looks great—I won’t be posting it!

Some really good panels and sessions, although there was one woman from Fix the Debt who really got on my nerves.

Elizabeth Colbert-Bush (It still pisses me off big time that she lost to creepy Mark Sanford) and it kind of sounds like she might run again. We were all joking around about Stephen, and asked her if he would be ColBURT now that he’s going straight. She said their father was ColBURT, she and other siblings are ColBURTS, and then there’s Stephen, so who knows.

The kooky Yves Smith at Naked Capitalism has been pushing the whole line that Ukraine are Nazis, who started the war and are the aggressor, while poor Putin and Russia are being unfairly blamed and framed by the fascist west and dictator Obomber.

It’s quite a disturbed view by the looney libertarian left.

Their line of attack is similar to how wingnuts spout that liberals are the real racists.

When Llamas comes marching home again
Hurrah! Hurrah!
We’ll give them a hearty welcome then
Hurrah! Hurrah!

The men will cheer and the boys will shout
The ladies they will all turn out
And we’ll all feel gay
When Llamas comes marching home.

The old church bell will peal with joy
Hurrah! Hurrah!
To welcome home our darling Camelidae,
Hurrah! Hurrah!

The village lads and lassies tweet
With roses they will strew the street,
And we’ll all feel gay
When Llamas comes marching home.

Get ready for the Jubilee,
Hurrah! Hurrah!
We’ll give the Lama three times three,
Hurrah! Hurrah!

The news reel is ready now
To place upon their loyal site
And we’ll all feel gay
When Llamas comes marching home.

Let love and friendship on that day,
Hurrah, hurrah!
Their choicest pleasures then display,
Hurrah, hurrah!

And let each one perform some part,
To fill with joy the escapee’s heart,
And we’ll all feel gay
When Llamas comes marching home.

The typical soft armor vests are more properly called bullet-resistant. Soft vests provide decent protection from many pistol rounds, but aren’t claimed to provide protection from rifle rounds.

And there are pistols which can fire rifle rounds. Scary.

76 Shiplord Kirel  Feb 28, 2015 7:46:05pm

re: #68 b_sharp

Can those bullets penetrate body armour?

Easily and, more importantly, they can do so with enough residual energy to still do lethal damage. Standard 5.56 rounds cam penetrate body armor at likely engagement ranges but with a significant loss of energy and therefore of lethality.

In an about-face from his first term, Gov. Scott Walker wants to eliminate funding for a University of Wisconsin-Madison renewable energy research center that has played a key role in helping land one of its biggest government grants ever.

In his budget, Walker is proposing to eliminate $8.1 million over two years — a total of 35 positions — from a bioenergy program.

The reductions are separate from his proposal to cut $300 million from the University of Wisconsin System over the next two years.

The researchprogram, founded in 2009, is charged with developing technologies to convert wood chips, corn stalks and native grasses to homegrown sources of power.

The program also funds research in other energy disciplines, including power generation and energy efficiency. Last year, Johnson Controls, the state’s largest company, opened an energy storage research lab on the UW campus.

I hope that Rice’s family files wrongful death suit and takes the city, the department, and the officers, for every last penny. Blaming the victim for a shooting death where the victim had less than 5 seconds to comply with police who began shooting the moment they exited the vehicle. There was no way anyone could comply with that.

There’s no way any of the police actions that day comport with department use of firearms. This was an instance of shoot first, shoot often, and then smear the victim when the victim turns out to be an unarmed 12 year old.

res.dallasnews.com

Pham says she will file a lawsuit Monday in Dallas County against Texas Health Resources alleging that while she became the American face of the fight against the disease, the hospital’s lack of training and proper equipment and violations of her privacy made her “a symbol of corporate neglect — a casualty of a hospital system’s failure to prepare for a known and impending medical crisis.”

She says that Texas Health Resources was negligent because it failed to develop policies and train its staff for treating Ebola patients. She says Texas Health Resources did not have proper protective gear for those who treated Duncan.

People talk about all kinds of amendments to the constitution that are needed. I don’t know if fair congressional districts needs an amendment, but it sure would be nice if we could at the least get some Federal Courts to say it is horribly out of balance and decree that it needs to be fixed to be more fair and force congress to draw up better ways to get fair districts.

It needs to be based on voter registrations and voter activity (turn out) and be automatic so that it changes along with the people in the area.

The next meteorological spring begins on 01 March 2015 and runs until 31 May 2015.

The meteorological seasons consists of splitting the seasons into four periods made up of three months each. These seasons are split to coincide with our Gregorian calendar making it easier for meteorological observing and forecasting to compare seasonal and monthly statistics. By the meteorological calendar, spring starts on 1 March.

The seasons are defined as Spring (March, April, May), Summer (June, July, August), Autumn (September, October, November) and Winter (December, January, February).

Gerrymandering is one of the biggest problems we have in U.S. politics. The big issue to change it, most people don’t understand how it works and how it got as screwed up as it has.

Congress has nothing to do with it. Design of legislative districts is in control of the individual state legislatures.

re: #201 Dark_Falcon

Congress doesn’t have much to do with it, since the states draw the district boundaries. Court decisions of the kind you seek would place requirements on state legislators.

Which is why the rightwing wants to kill the Voting Rights Act and use it as an excuse for gerrymandering.

And a pox on this current SC for caving in to AL and allowing states to “ghetto-ize” districts.

I know. See my other comments.

Think of it the same way Marriage Equality is going down. The states have set marriage laws. When a state law is seen to be against Constitutional rights, it can be taken up in a Federal Court.

I understand there will be screaming by the states.

I understand Dark’s comment about Illinois.

That is why it needs to be based on something other than humans that are purely party motivated. It needs to be citizen/voter driven and party control taken away.

If party control isn’t taken away (both parties) the districts will always be unfair. There has to be a fairer way based on actual numbers rather than bending districts to get the numbers you want.

Let me ask this. Does anyone see the current system as fair? If you do not, how do you get the states to change it?

One state at a time.

The Supreme Court can make a ruling regarding marriage based on some of the current amendments. They can’t make a broad ruling on the rules regarding formation of legislative districts since that runs counter to the Constitution. Best they can do is strike down particular rules on a case-by-case basis as being abusive and hope that Congress can indicate some standards (as per the VCA), but that still will convert back into court cases.

The odds of an amendment making it out of Congress and through the states to change the process and/or set specific rules to follow is nil. To much entrenched interests opposed to it, and the state’s rights/libertarian crowd will also form up against it by default, chanting “Federal BAD, State GOOD!” like they were sheep on Animal Farm.

Re redistricting:

Before we had computers this couldn’t be done, but the fair way to do it is this:

If a state has a population p and a congressional representation n, then start in the center of the largest municipality and expand a circle until it takes in p/n people. Then the second largest municipality and so on. Soon the circles will run into each other and become lopsided, but it can’t be any weirder than the gerrymandered districts we’ve got now.

Of course, the GOP will never go for this, because it gives the most votes to areas with the most people, and we can’t have that.

Seriously, the only other alternative would be voting for at-large congressmen divided into groups alphabetically or something.

Require each congressional candidate to walk the long axis of the district, carrying their largest donor on their back.

If you want to see the most ridiculously gerrymandered district, google the map of Illinois Congressional District 4.

Held by Democrat Luis Gutiérrez. Gutiérrez doesn’t hide the map of his district, either; It has a page on his House website.

Major credit to you, Ba_Sl, for calling out a liberal Dem for this sort of trickery. The criticism is most effective when its from within the malefactor’s party.

He didn’t draw that map, however.

He didn’t draw the map, but he had the ear of the people who did draw it.

And I have been operating on the assumption that you are a Democrat, to be honest.
