Hugh Hewitt: Republicans Will Face No Evolution Questions From Me

The latest GOP anti-science misdirection: “who cares?”
Politics • Views: 29,778

You may have heard that one of the moderators for the Republican presidential debates will be right wing talk radio host Hugh Hewitt, which makes total sense from the GOP’s point of view — because he’s guaranteed not to ask any questions that might be embarrassing. For example, whether they reject the scientific theory of evolution.

Hugh Hewitt will not be asking questions about contraceptives at CNN’s Republican presidential debate.

In an interview with radio host Aaron Klein that will air Sunday night on New York’s AM 970 The Answer, Hewitt ruled out certain types of questions completely.

“I don’t care what people think about evolution,” he told Klein. “I don’t care. I never cared. I don’t care if they know how old the earth is and I just have never cared about personal religious beliefs.”

This is the latest Republican talking point on evolution, of course; who cares? What does it matter?

It matters because Republican politicians at every level of government are still, in 2015, trying to find ways to sneak the teaching of creationism into public school science classes. In Louisiana, for example, where Gov. Bobby Jindal signed into law a “teach the controversy” bill sponsored and written by the creationist Discovery Institute.

It would be especially embarrassing this time around, too, because it looks like this may be the first GOP presidential race in which all of the candidates are creationists.

And this is why they’re now pretending it doesn’t matter. Classic dishonest misdirection from the anti-science party that specializes in it.

UPDATE at 3/1/15 12:09:43 pm by Charles Johnson

We should also note, by the way, that Hugh Hewitt himself is a creationist. (h/t: Timothy Sandefur.)

So the age of the earth, a physical artifact that has left enduring physical evidence ever since it has existed, is a religious belief?

I had a guy at work try to argue that they can’t really determine the age of rocks because the amount of radioactive material could have changed by being absorbed or released by the rocks.

It’s gotten to the point where they spend more time trying to be creationists than accepting that their God must have created the rocks. At least this guy hasn’t tried to claim that God’s a practical joker.

Question Number 1 for the panel: Who is your most admired President, and why did you choose Ronald Reagan?

Question 2: How much do you love America?

Question 3: When will Congress finally investigate Benghazi?

Question 4: Best solution for securing the border — land mines and sniper towers or sharks with frickin’ laser beams in the Rio Grande?

I don’t buy this from HH; “I just have never cared about personal religious beliefs.”

In his own words:

Frankly, until we of faith can create enough distance from our religious devotion to see how it is being used to divide, and therefore defeat us; taking the issue off the table looks like the most expedient option open to a candidate. Even one whose personal religious devotion is quite plain, as it is in Walker’s life. One wishes for a better way for Walker, or any other candidate, to go in circumstances like these, but at the moment it seems like any other response will be divisive. By comparison, avoidance does not look so bad.

Unless people of faith can unite across their various theological, sectarian, and minor issue boundaries, look for religion in 2016 to be a battle between the media trying to push it to the fore to divide Republicans and the candidates trying desperately to push it into the background. In 2012 Romney successfully pushed the issue into the background, but there is data suggesting that such muted turnout and helped Obama win. The successful candidate is the one that is going to be able to lead the party and religious leaders in keeping the issue on the table while not allowing it to be divisive.

He just thinks that, right now, it is a losing proposition for republicans to talk about it so much.

I am sure Rick Santorum, Huckabee, Phil Robertson, among others will agree. ///

This is stupid. Even the most generous, pro-Reagan view of history doesn’t consider the firing of a bunch of American air traffic controllers a foreign policy achievement. And it’s laughable to think that firing those workers somehow scared Moscow into taking America seriously.

Read through the Noonan piece, and it’s about what you’d expect. Reagan totally didn’t want to have to fuck over Patco, but they left him no choice, so he fucked them over and it was a good thing. The downfall of unions at every level was okay because the Soviets saw he was “tough.”

You’ll find no more faithful cheerleader of St. Reagan than Peggy Noonan.

Not even an issue—the services have their own ATC career field, with MOS’s like the Army’s 15Q. That’s where most civilian ATC types get their start. PATCO badly underestimated how fast that pipeline could replace the strikers.

52 BeachDem  Mar 1, 2015 1:24:45pm

Back to the 2016 Dem ticket for a moment. My prediction:

Hillary
O’Malley for VP

My reasons:

1. Hillary, while many here are ambivalent or negative to her, has a pretty strong following; and has a lot of Dem activist supporters—I’ve been to several local, state and national Dem events, and the Ready for Hillary people are everywhere, and they’re well-received. They will be able to get out the door-knockers and phone-callers. Also, she can raise a lot of money.

2. O’Malley fills in the gaps.
Young—check (53)
Gets along well with the Clintons—check
Executive experience—check (mayor and governor)
Good state connections—check (DGA chair for 2 years)
Good stance on progressive/liberal issues like same-sex marriage and in-state tuition for undocumented immigrants, opposition to capital punishment
Good speaker—just heard him speak yesterday, and he comes across really well. Little tidbit—while he was talking, he took a swat at triangulation. As soon as the words were out of his mouth, I turned to the person next to me and said, “If he runs with Hillary, he’ll have to drop that line from his speeches.” Sure enough, the NYT and others picked up on it big time.

nytimes.com

I think he might launch a small campaign for the primaries, which would be good to give him some exposure and present some challenge to some of Hillary’s less popular stances. Then, I think he’ll be the VP pick, and they can soften her problem areas with him.

Just my thoughts on the subject.

A few years ago, my nephew was over at our house. Our youngest, who was seven and about 6 years younger than the nephew, wanted to play against him on a PS3 game. My middle son then beat my youngest and my youngest turned to my nephew and said “I was going easy on you,” which I know isn’t true because my son can be a competitor. The Buzzfeed piece linked to refers to Hewitt as a “center-right radio host.” In what ways is he a centrist? Does anything separate him from the Limbaughs and Hannitys of the world other than making fewer of the barely coded racist and sexist comments that are the other guys’ stock in trade? OK, he supported Romney, but that hardly makes him a centrist. He’s been as hysterical (if a bit less nasty) as anyone over the last 6 years with Obama as Prez.

People say, ‘How can you be a scientist, how can you be a surgeon if you don’t believe in certain things?’ Maybe those things aren’t scientific, maybe it is just propaganda.”

Wingnut heads exploding at free republic:
Gay Group Wins Formal Recognition From State Republican Party

The Log Cabin Republicans, a 38-year-old organization that had unsuccessfully sought a charter from the state party several times in the past, received the formal imprimatur on a 861-293 vote at the party’s biannual convention in Sacramento.

Brandon Gesecki, a delegate from Carmel who supported the effort, said the vote showed how much the party in California has changed in recent years.

I have said several times that the Cal GOP is generally the meanest and most hard-hearted bunch of bastards I have encountered in US politics. Still, though, they deserve credit for bucking the superstition-driven fundy/tea party social trend and confining themselves to their traditional pursuits of soul-dead greed and sycophantic support for the corporate agenda.

In California, the GOP is almost totally marginalized at this point. This is a political calculation - they know they’d be signing their own death warrants if they tried to parrot the usual right wing anti-gay line.

From the response at freeperland, it looks as though the national GOP may be ready to toss them into the dustbin as well, at least the dysfunctional base is. It may depend of how well Prince Rebus and his flying monkeys at the RNC can hold off the tea party/fundy wing. I predict he can’t and the Cal GOP will go the way of the dodo.

I’d disagree with that sentiment. The difference between ISIS and unions is that unions represent a greater threat to conservatives than ISIS does.

That’s why conservatives have gone all in on trying to destroy unions wherever they have had a chance.

They’ll complain that the unions have destroyed the fiscal situation in given locality or state, ignoring that politicians used the pension funds as a piggy bank during flush times to balance budgets to the point where they’re now tremendously underwater and unable to cover obligations. So, the GOP is turning around and ignoring the contractual obligations and looking to rewrite the deal.

It’s something out of Robot Chicken, where the GOP plays the part of Vader, and unions are Lando.

White Sox baseball great Minnie Minoso has passed away. Broke the color barrier for the Sox, and before joining the Sox had played for the New York Cubans

Saturnino Orestes Armas Miñoso Arrieta was born November 29, 1925 in Cuba (although there is some dispute about the year of his birth—the White Sox list his age as 92) and played with the New York Cubans in the Negro League before he made his debut with the Cleveland Indians April 19, 1949. Mr. Miñoso received his big break when he was traded to the White Sox in 1951. He became the first black player in White Sox history and was an integral part of the “Go-Go Sox” teams of the 1950s.

In addition to breaking the color barrier with the Sox, Mr. Miñoso also became baseball’s first black Latin superstar and helped forge a legacy between the White Sox and Cuban baseball players that exists to this day. His charming demeanor earned him the nickname “Mr. White Sox” and his other nickname, “The Cuban Comet” referred to his basestealing prowess—he led the American League in stolen bases three times. He finished in the top five in AL MVP voting four times, was a seven-time All-Star, hit .300 or better six times and drove in more than 100 runs four times. Mr. Miñoso wasn’t afraid of being hit by pitches, so much that baseball wound up changing the rules of the game so that batters had to make an attempt to avoid errant pitches.

What always gets me is how flexible their belief in the sanctity of a contract really is. Bank exec bonuses simply cannot be touched, but our duty to wounded veterans is flexible and unions contracts are subject to dismissal because the government was either “forced” into signing them or they were signed by “pro-union” politicians who agreed to “sweetheart deals.”

Or, as Sister Peggy of the Everlasting Fountain of Everclear has drunksplained, raising the pay and improving the working conditions of the most high-stress job in the entire history of ever, would cost taxpayers money and therefore Ronnie had to give the unions a righteous ass-fucking to set an example to the Soviets.

That sounds so dumb when you’re sober.

Speaking of Regan’s greatest foreign policy achievement of firing the air traffic controllers, there’s this:

‘Heroic’ Anchorage air traffic controller credited with mid-air rescue

High over Southeast Alaska last August, 82-year-old Bill Bunten was flying blind.

The retired bank president from Topeka, Kansas, realized after leaving Ketchikan that the weather en route to Juneau was worse than he expected. Bunten dropped from 8,000 feet to 7,000 to lose the ice forming on the wings of his Piper Comanche. The autopilot wasn’t working and the engine sounded choppy. Suddenly, the small plane’s heading indicator and compass started spinning. Bunten remembered a note on his map about possible navigational problems in the area.

Now he was in the clouds and struggling to get his bearings without the two instruments he needed to do just that.

But the experienced pilot wasn’t alone. Along with a non-pilot friend riding in the cockpit, air traffic controller Parker Corts was watching over the Comanche from Anchorage, hundreds of miles away.

The National Air Traffic Controllers Association will honor Corts next week for “heroic actions that saved the life of a pilot last summer,” the labor union announced Wednesday.

It’s a great story about an incident that happens all the time, but we only hear about it when the plane crashes.

Well done, Mr. Corts.

Look at the newly elected Prime Minister of Estonia (although he’s been PM since Mar 2014). He’s 35 yrs old and looks even younger and joined the Reform Party when he was 19. Prior to becoming PM in 3/14, he was Minister of Social Affairs. He is married to a pop singer, Luisa Värk, and they have a daughter.

WTS-graduate black sheep Peter Enns notes the raging of the John McArthur machine:

Here’s something new: Genesis is in “crisis” and if you don’t see that you’re “syncretistic”

Getting back to my tattered soapbox of worldview collapse - I propose that GOP politics is a sandbox in which distraught, existential angst monologues have taken center stage, many which then combine into the chorus of nonsense that now makes up the “right” in this county.

Many people are having a hard time emotionally resolving what the world is now telling them.

Reading through what the GOP is saying today on the Sunday Funnies is an absolute hoot, and tells me that this week is gonna be an absolute laugh riot. Boehner’s wants Senate Dems to “negotiate” (gee, when did we last hear that?), while McCarthy is saying McConnell should use the “nuclear option” and Scalise is saying there was no deal to bring the Senate’s bill to a vote if the motion for cloture fails tomorrow.

Throw that in with the inevitable fallout from Bibi’s speech and it looks like I’m gonna need to go buy some more popcorn. And a couple bottles of schadenfreude.

Fairly quiet. Paying bills, and feeding and interacting with both mine and the neighbor’s cats. Tuxedo Cat is particularly unhappy that I return from outside the apartment smelling like *other* cats. So she is spending a lot of time in the other room acting cranky.

Nothing exciting food-wise. Running the pantry down in regards to stuff that can spoil in anticipation of a trip later this week.

That’s life in the backwoods when climate change runs amok.
Road doesn’t get plowed ever and shit just keeps piling up, compacting, rinse and repeat.
I have a friend a few counties south of me…her husband tried to get out today. Unsuccessfully.
Last week, one of her friends got some immediate supplies (she is sooo happy to have half-n-half again for her coffee) but she had to walk out of her holler (SIX MILES!!!) while wearing Arctic Tracks and using Nordic poles for balance, and carrying a 20-lb. backpack.
I told her that drone delivery service can’t come soon enough!
But really, this weather is totally crazy. We all prep for extended periods of being snowed in, even though it doesn’t happen often, but this is two years in a row of extremely extended being locked in.
It sucks.

It’s “Plan B” all over again, Boehner trying to bluff about the strength of his hand when it’s obvious he’s not even holding on to a pair of twos. He needs Democrats to get anything meaningful accomplished in the House, and so long as that’s the case, any attempt to strong-arm them will fall apart.
