Elizabeth Warren Will Skip Netanyahu’s Speech

Good for Elizabeth Warren.

Warren announced she would not attend the speech in a statement issued by her office Monday evening.

“I strongly support Israel, and I remain deeply concerned about the prospect of an Iranian nuclear weapon, which I discussed in detail with Prime Minister Netanyahu when we met in Jerusalem last November,” the Democratic senator said in a statement. “It’s unfortunate that Speaker Boehner’s actions on the eve of a national election in Israel have made Tuesday’s event more political and less helpful for addressing the critical issue of nuclear nonproliferation and the safety of our most important ally in the Middle East.”

I’m also a supporter of Israel who’s appalled at this nakedly political move by the Republican Party, obviously intended to undermine President Obama. And I sincerely hope it backfires on them, as it should.

It is of course only up to Israelis whom to elect. But I hope they will take into account that the current PM is an irresponsible man who gambles his country’s relationship with its closest ally in hope to gain political dividends.

Netanyahu is making a seriously stupid move here. But it’s not surprising - his administration has been courting the American right wing for years, getting more and more extreme.

Agreed. He’s doing a lot of damage to the Israeli relationship with the U.S. And that is, really, really, really important.

This whole thing just burns me up. The republicans are playing with fire as is Netanyahu.

Sure there are real differences, but the leaks, everyone acting as if there is already a deal agreed to, the complicity of the MSM is galling.

This is uncharted territory. Having a leader of another nation come to congress to directly oppose our president in a foreign policy matter is not the right way to go and it sets a terrible precedent.

Maybe Natanyahu can just repeat this speech he gave to a joint session of Congress in 1996 when he asserted that the deadline for preventing Iran from going nuclear was “extremely close”.

Can you imagine if Obama presented an award to a famously insane domestic critic of Netanyahu the way Bibi gave an award to Glenn Beck?

Can you imagine if Obama campaigned for a candidate in an Israeli election the way Bibi campaigned for Romney?

This whole situation is absolutely sickening. Nobody should be surprised that today’s GOP leaders are willing to turn anything into partisan bullshit, but it is sad that Netanyahu is willing to damage Israel’s relationship to its strongest ally for the purpose of an election campaign.

24 Charles Johnson  Mar 2, 2015 6:36:47pm

Sorry to go OT so early in the thread, but this burns me up:

From the article:

A Cypress Bay High School French teacher could lose her job after allegedly calling a Muslim student a “[bigoted word] Taliban.”

The Broward School Board will hear from the student’s father on Tuesday. The board is expected to take disciplinary action during its March 17 meeting.

Youssef Wardani, father of 14-year-old Deyab-Houssein Wardani, is pressing for the firing or suspension of Cypress Bay High School teacher Maria Valdes for her remark. […]

Regarding a February 10 meeting with the teacher:

Wardani said the meeting was less than productive.

“Her apology was robotic and empty and rehearsed,” he said. “She said it was an innocent joke and then started rolling her eyes and was huffing and puffing when I asked her questions. […]

Following the meeting Wardani was asked what outcome he wanted. He told school administrators he wanted the teacher fired or suspended for a year without pay. And, he wanted a public apology.

“They told me that the best I could hope for was a letter in her personnel file” due to teacher’s union rules, he said. […]

A joke? Really? Hmm, let’s see—the teacher’s name is Maria Valdes… What do you suppose would happen if (as an “innocent joke”, mind you) a student called her a spic or a beaner in front of the class?

The only positive I’ve seen out of the GOP since the late 80s is they have shown we have a big problem in our country with religion and bigotry in many forms creeping into our politics either for the first time or coming back with a vengeance (bigotry).

Sometimes positives can be in negatives. Now, the big challenge is how long will it continue until someone in the GOP finally grow a spine and kicks the Tea Party and neo conservative Bircher-type thinking out before there is no GOP left to save.

One reason we haven’t seen anything in decades is we haven’t seen a true Republican party in decades. They lost the plot and decided to go with fringe instead of center.

BOISE - A North Idaho senator is objecting to allowing a Hindu prayer as the opening invocation for the Idaho Senate on Tuesday morning, and says he’ll walk out.

Sen. Steve Vick, R-Dalton Gardens, said, “They have a caste system. They worship cows.” He acknowledged the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution allows any kind of prayer, but said he thinks the Hindu one shouldn’t be allowed to open the Senate, as the United States was “built on the Judeo-Christian not only religion but work ethic, and I don’t want to see that undermined.”

If the teacher was capable of uttering such filth, it’s likely that the bigotry extended to grading, classroom interactions with the student, etc. I wonder if other students also suffered such treatment.

If the teacher isn’t disciplined to the greatest extent possible, the school system will be giving tacit approval to the behavior. I only hope that the school district has more humanity than their disgraceful employee.

I cant imagine what Hillary was thinking. I will wait for some kind of explanation but , WTF?

This, coupled with the Clinton Foundation foreign donation news is just crazy bad.

The Democrats need a Come to Jesus moment. Who else do we have?

Biden…love him, but don’t think he could win, ditto Warren. We are screwed.

Look on the bright side. The ethical bar for Hillary is pretty low, since the American public already knows about her past…and she still polls ahead of all the GOP candidates by double digits. Furthermore, it’s unlikely that she’ll be running against some Republican who’s squeaky clean.

The best arguments for Hillary are simple: 1) there aren’t any other Dems ready to run; 2) she’s been around the block, so at least knows how DC runs; and 3) she’s less extreme than any of the GOPers.

The Dems don’t have an Obama this time, so we’ll have to make due with what we get. The alternative is the GOP controlling both houses of Congress, the WH, and getting to further tilt the Supreme Court to the right (Ginsburg won’t live forever).

Kirsten Gillebrand? And don’t forget—-over on the other side, the Republican “we” is just as sure that it’s screwed. “We” can’t get a candidate who will win even those African-American and Hispanic votes that in the normal course of events [voting their own personal and economic class interests] would go that way. The nomination process kicks out either a nutcase, or a sane guy who’s had to kiss so many rings that by the time he gets to the general election, he’s burned out, he’s said too much that he can’t walk back, and he’s boxed in by that which he’s said.

Nominate a centrist Democrat other than Hillary or McCain[sorry, Biden], and the election is a walkover for the Democrats.

Nominate Warren, and it’s up in the air. Could go either way. Nominate Hillary, and it’s odds on she wins, and yet—-she has this whiff of tone-deafness. She has, I think, the ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Again, actually, since she was the all but inevitable Democrat nominee 7 or 8 years ago.

The opposite of her winning is not necessarily that she lost it. Obama ran a near perfect campaign, one facet of which was that he played every rule of the nominating process to the letter. Also, isn’t it true that Democrats don’t necessarily do inevitable nominees?

I personally don’t mind seeing Hillary in the WH. She’s only a Clinton by marriage, so the whole “not another Clinton” kinda bugs me.

Yes, she polls ahead of the R’s now. Hell, nobody has more than 25% support on that side. But they will have debates and pick a candidate. Excitement will be generated on their side.

A story like this can do real harm, and quite frankly, unless there is a really good explanation for this, it will be deserved. Remember the grief we all gave Sarah Palin for using personal email for gov business?

Anyone who thinks the Rs cant win the presidency, just remember 2014 when everyone stayed home except the republicans. (Yes, I know…midterms! but still)

Unless we find a way go get some excitement on our side, it will be difficult to win. I thought Hillary was our best hope. This kind of news is depressing.

If Mrs. Clinton is not to your taste, I would also like to suggest taking a deep breath and reminding yourself the election is still 20 months away. As we saw on the GOP side during the last cycle, there is absolutely no benefit whatsoever in being an early frontrunner.

Furthermore, it is less important for Democrat hopefuls to start their campaigns this early. While donors with deep pockets are a necessary ingredient for ANY campaign, there is no equivalent of the “Adelson primary” on the left…so no impetus to get out in public and brag about ideological purity at this stage in the process.

And just how is it, ODS fools, that the US military has the authority to conduct these strikes? Did they pull it out of some Bible code? Are they reacting spontaneously to the inspiring rhetoric at CPAC? Did Rush Limbaugh tell them to do it?

I see where Google is going to rebrand G+ and split out the hangouts and the photos.

It’s all so confusing.

And for some reason when I go to google+ in Chrome the memory usage goes way up, the system slows down.

One thing I really dislike, and many websites do it now, is replace the standard window scrollbar with the narrower one without any scroll buttons. G+ does this and I find it quite annoying.

Google seems to like live beta testing of its services. How many times has Google Chat changed its name? Are Picasa and Google Photos the same thing now? Of course, it’s all academic to me. China is blocking everything Google now, including GMail.

re: #104 Higgs Boson’s Mate

In other words: Hillary is a shit sandwich, but there’s a dab of mayo.

That’s one way to look at it. Another is holding your nose, blah blah.

Point is simple: in some elections, since there are only two viable parties, you’re not going to get a choice you really like. So you have to decide if sitting out the election is worth the other party having control of the entire federal government—literally, the whole thing. And consolidating for another generation their hold on the Supreme Court.

Granted, Hillary is flawed, imperfect, and in some ways she totally sucks. But the US has to elect a new president in 2016, and all of the alternatives suck way harder.

How is this even possible?!? Come on gotta do better than “she’s been around” and “not extreme like the GOP guys”. I don’t want the GOP to win but I’m an indy. From my view that’s pretty damn weak tea. Our system has failed to produce a selection of capable candidates.

Good, get angry. We’re not really as democratic as we’d like to think. Chances are we’ll either have Clinton II or Bush III as our next prez. I prefer a second Clinton before a third Bush. Seems more fair numerically, and the Clinton WH track record easily surpasses the Bush family’s.

Either way, we’re more dynastic and oligarchical than we like to admit. Hillary and Jeb (to a lesser extent) are powerful frontrunners only because of their family names.

The GOP is so lacking in qualified candidates that the brother of a disaster like W is the guy raking in all the donations. And the Dems are in even worse shape, since no one besides Hillary wants to run.

I hope Hillary picks another female as her running mate—that would really make heads explode. Well, we’ve always had male/male combos, so why not female ones? Only when women realize their own potential can we change the world, and do it in our own way. And that can be done with brains, not brawn.

This is the other conundrum of politics: experience = baggage

Hillary has tons of both.

In the old days, communications were either done face-to-face, on the phone, or transmitted on paper, and could be easily concealed or destroyed permanently (with the notable exception of Richard Nixon). Emails, IMs, tweets, etc., are not so ephemeral, if the middleman archives everything or the communication escapes into the wild. Today’s public officials have not caught up with technology. If they’re trying to slip stuff past the public eye, they’re doing a crappy job of it.

From the point of view of government transparency, this is a welcome development. From the point of view of a candidate keeping her (or his) nose clean, it sucks.

I’m not suggesting HC has something to hide, but that she needs to wise up about electronic communication.

It’s been a complaint that’s as old as newspapers. Someone publishes a front-page story that contains an error. A reader or the subject of the article asks the error be corrected, and the correction gets buried in a tiny paragraph somewhere on the bottom of page 12. In the case of egregious errors, like the infamous Washington Post 8-year-old heroin addict feature, the paper has to be much more obvious about correcting the misinformation.

Nowadays, dishonest bloggers publish total crap that’s patently wrong, and even after it’s proved to be wrong, the crap remains online with no corrections at all.

222 Dark_Falcon  Mar 3, 2015 4:33:21am

I’m also going to post the real Benghazi story from yesterday, because something notable happened regarding the fighting in that city, but most the US media ignored it:

Libya names anti-Islamist General Haftar as army chief

A controversial anti-Islamist, General Khalifa Haftar, has been named head of the Libyan army.

Libya’s internationally recognised government controls only a small part of the country, with Tripoli controlled by rivals Libya Dawn.

The country has been blighted by fighting between the factions, as well as attacks by jihadist groups.

Gen Haftar launched Operation Dignity last year, a self-declared war on Islamists in the city of Benghazi.

On Monday there were reports of fighting between Haftar-controlled troops and Islamists in the city.

The former general is a divisive figure amongst Libyans. He has drawn praise for attempts to bring order to the chaos in the country but criticism for his aggressive use of force, including air strikes.

While this is largely just a ratification of the facts on the ground by Libya’s parliament, it does make clear their determination to see the whole Radical Islamist crew defeated in Libya.

David Schulz told a three-judge panel of the U.S. 4th Circuit Court of Appeals that some victims’ relatives believe the sweeping gag order also prohibits them from testifying before lawmakers and regulators.

U.S. District Judge Irene Berger’s gag order was imposed in January when she said it was needed to protect former Massey Energy CEO Don Blankenship’s right to a fair trial.

Jeb’s already trying to make hay out of the email “scandal”:

Except the dumbass didn’t run the emails by anybody before posting them, so 12,000 have had to be scrubbed because they contained names, addresses, and SSNs of folks in Florida.

Worse, Jeb’s trying to make a big noise about transparency, yet:

The former governor conducted all his communication on his private Jeb@jeb.org account and turned over the hand-selected batch to the state archives when he left office. Absent from the stash are emails the governor deemed not relevant to the public record: those relating to politics, fundraising and personal matters while he was governor. Compared to Scott, however, who rarely communicates by email, the contrast is stark.

So he’s going “Check me out, I made all my emails public record!,” yet the fine print is that he cherry-picked the emails that the public gets to see.

And in honor of the non-mammal combatants from 2014 we have one non-mammal competitor- the desert rain frog.

Some details: Battle outcome is a function of the two species’ attributes within the battle environment. Attributes considered in calculating battle outcome include temperament, weaponry, armor, body mass, fight style, and other fun facts that are relevant to the outcome. These are one on one- head to head combat situations- um except for the mythical mammals that have multiple heads. Some random error has been introduced into calculating battle outcome & the amount of that error is scaled to the disparity in rankings between combatants.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Multipronged derp this morning.

We have the obvious with Netanyahu’s speech upcoming and right wingers saying that the Administration caved on Iran, even though terms of whatever is being negotiated aren’t fully disclosed and those details that have come to light have already shown that Iran has no interest in holding to the basic framework (10 years of no enrichment). In other words, sanctions and containment will continue, which is itself a continuation of Bush administration policies re: Iran.

Then, there’s the start of the latest ACA talk and how the GOP is ready to present an alternative to the ACA if the Supreme Court strikes down the subsidies. Mind you they don’t have a bill - just a plan. And the plan is suspiciously a lot like the ACA in most respects. The rhetoric is the different because the GOP has to try and distinguish it, but the reality is that the GOP has to replace the ACA with the ACA, or else millions will be without insurance, or face crippling costs from medical issues that the ACA would otherwise cover.

If anything, the GOP alternative would likely result in even higher premiums, higher costs, and fewer benefits than the ACA, because their plan is more limited and can’t bend the cost curve.

But I say likely, because there’s nothing to actually test here. There is no bill. There’s nothing for the CBO to score (even under dynamic or static scoring models). And the CBO scoring on the ACA has turned out to be pessimistic about how the ACA would operate thus far (it’s doing better than expected).

Then, there’s the whole nonsense about Clinton’s private emails, which apparently were before Congress enacted new laws about private emails, and if we’re talking about private emails, then pretty much every GOP presidential candidate has had private email accounts where they conducted official business.

Oh, and how can I forget that the right now thinks that Obama’s about to take all your ammo away.

To say nothing of the fact that they can’t even get a consensus among GOPers to support any federal plan at all. Each of the GOP “plans” is nothing more than vaporware since they’ve had six years to float proposals, and in that time, not a single bill has been proffered, let alone scored.

To now claim that they’ve got a plan, when they don’t have an actual filed bill smacks of desperation in order to sway the Supreme Court into thinking that they could kill the subsidies and that Congress will act to address the situation.

Mind you, the Supreme Court struck down the VRA provisions because the formulas were out of date, leaving the mess to Congress to clean up, but Congress has so far refused to act either.

This Congress - and this GOP in particular - wants to burn down the safety net. Killing the ACA is all part and parcel of that, even though it was a plan that was largely based on a GOP plan alternative to single payer or Hillarycare back in the 1990s.

re: #260 lawhawk

You can tell how much of this is smoke and mirrors by noting that none of the leadership seems to be touting this nothingburger of a “plan.” Nobody with presidential ambitions wants to voice their support. And despite making a lot of noise for years about an alternative, they can’t even offer a broad outline of what they propose to replace the ACA.

But it may serve its purpose, which is to convince Roberts and Kennedy that Congress would seriously work to fix things if the Nine Wise Souls struck down the subsidies. That’s assuming they don’t pull the escape handle that’s conveniently marked and just kick the case out, faulting the lower courts for taking the case when none of the claimants has standing.

I have to at least give credit to Boehner for not being totally fucking stupid. It’s far from impossible, given recent worldwide events, that some minor (or, god forbid, major) act of violence could occur in the US in the next couple of months.

With a partially shut-down DHS to blame (thanks, Republicans!) and a president to vote for, that could blow up even the current gerrymandered GOP majority.
