Did Hillary Clinton Really Use a “Homebrew Email Server?” (A: Very Probably Not)

Associated Press may have really messed this one up
Media • Views: 45,819

The AP story that Hillary Clinton used a “homebrew email server” for State Department emails is coming apart at the seams. @BobCesca_go, @Shoq and I went back and forth on Twitter, digging into this story for most of the afternoon because it just didn’t seem plausible that HRC had her email server in her house as the AP article claimed, and it now looks very likely that we’re seeing another case of journalists who have just enough technical knowledge to get it drastically wrong.

Here’s Bob’s write-up, with the details of what we discovered: The AP’s Bombshell Hillary Clinton Email Story Fails to Prove Existence of “Homebrew” Server.

To sum it up: the Associated Press story assumed that because these emails were sent from clintonemail•com, they had to be coming from that domain. What they apparently didn’t realize (but any competent web developer could have told them) is that the ISP that hosts these emails, Cablevision, lets business customers configure their accounts to route email through Cablevision’s email server, but still use the customer’s domain name.

UPDATE at 3/5/15 2:15:16 pm by Charles Johnson

The Washington Post now reports that an anonymous “Clinton ally” has confirmed the email server was located in Clinton’s home: As House Panel Issues Subpoenas, Questions Mount Over Clinton E-Mails.

Instead of using State Department servers to send and receive those e-mails, she used a server housed at her private home in Chappaqua, N.Y., a Clinton ally familiar with her e-mail practices confirmed Wednesday. The server’s existence was first reported by the Associated Press.

The Clinton ally said the server and e-mail addresses were established after the conclusion of Clinton’s unsuccessful bid for president in 2008, as she was transitioning away from using an account held by her defunct campaign.

Please tell me that the real server was in Benghazi.

I saw “home-brew” e-mail server and knew immediately that it was bullshit. Someone needs to hire a tech on retainer to explain this stuff.

I’m not sure the truth behind all of this really matters anymore, Charles. Odds are the GOP leaked this “scandal” to the Times for the express purpose of providing cover for what they did today, which was to begin yet another fishing expedition by subpoenaing all of Clinton’s personal emails. The Grey Lady provided Gowdy’s nuthouse exactly the excuse it needed, which was the appearance of “impropriety” to argue that she was hiding something and thus must turn over everything so they can root around in it for something damaging to her 2016 ambitions.

We really need this for politics and court cases as well as reporting. Imagine how the world would be if a tech geek was able to head off statements like “internet of tubes”. Or if a judge was able to consult a panel of impartial technical experts on what technical jargon means when presented with a dispute between tech companies.

i suppose i have my own “private email server” in the sense that i use for my personal email domain the domain of my own website which is, however, hosted by yahoo

however you can of course serve out your domain from any laptop running apache or something if you want to

This is pretty much a no-win scenario for Clinton now. If she complies with the subpoena, it’s almost guaranteed that the juicier bits will be fed to the Republican nominee and Super PACs. And even if she does comply, Republicans will be sure to make a lot of noises about how they’re sure that their continued failure to find the “smoking gun” means she’s still got some more emails hidden somewhere.

And if she fights the subpoena, then Gowdy will drag this out into next year. If she prevails, the whisper campaign begins about judges “bought off” or there being something truly devastating to her that she’d go to court to avoid releasing it. And if Gowdy prevails, then she gets shellacked with costing the government money fighting her court challenge and anything found in the emails will be seen as even more damaging.

It’s Whitewater all over again. Republicans have dispensed with the election and moved right on to the impeachment.

Depends on how much Fox news can fixate on it - the problem for them is that it involves technology, and their core audience is a bunch of cranky old farts to whom “the internet is a series of tubes” sounds about right. They zone out when the details of the story start coming out, and can’t follow what the problem really is all about.

Look for it to get dropped in favor of something they can understand, like BENGHAZI which was obviously about a commie wimp president leaving brave Americans to die because he was too afraid to nuke him some brown people.

Prediction of “major snowstorm” in Philadelphia. I can’t help but notice that everytime they tell me what time the rain will change to snow it’s a little bit later. First it was evening, then midnight, then 2am now it’s 3-4 am.

They were hyping 3 - 6 inches all week for LI. Now they’re saying 3 inches, but I have my doubts that we’ll even get that, since it’s still 40 degrees outside.

Lots of fog and street flooding on the way home from rehearsal tonight, though. I’m hoping like hell that this is a sign that winter is finally starting to lose its punch.

We’ve got probably a couple of inches or so of freezing rain pellets. I know I’m not making any plans for a Starbucks run tomorrow AM. I have a feeling that even if I did need to go out, my car doors are coated with a sheet of ice right now.

It’d better frigging snow. I had to cancel a tutoring job; run out and buy new wiper blades; make sure the snow blower was working; and throw the tarp on my car.

That’s the job. There are emails not previously available to the committee, and they need to be reviewed. Mrs. Clinton could have avoided this by using a government email address, but instead she chose to use one created right before her confirmation hearings began.

A crime? No, I don’t think so, but it doesn’t look good.

‘Morning, all. It’s 0247, and the Alabama Democratic Party is still MIA. Here’s a quote from a liberal AL blog:

“The Democrats? Their stuff was the equivalent of knocking over a convenience store. They got a little cash and passed some of the bread around the neighborhood. But the Republicans? They backed the armored truck up to the state treasury and emptied it in broad daylight.”

Right now, we don’t seem capable of organizing a bible school bus trip, let alone a Freedom Ride.

re: #146 Decatur Deb

The momentum of groups is nearly impossible to change, which is why the accomplishments of special people who triumph over their society are celebrated.

Our fellow citizens are on the whole materially content, by historical standards, but emotionally we are still burdened with that our ancestors also had - loss and distress.

To combat the discomfort of change we seek out that with which we are familiar, which I propose is why in contemporary politics it is so hard to get people to embrace change even when it is necessary.

It has been often noticed that a great many of the Confederate soldiers were not slave owners - they were too poor. The rich of that day (who did own plantations with numerous slaves) convinced the poor white farmers to fight the battles of the wealthy who had the most to lose.

That would seem on first glance to be a curious thing but if we look around at what is happening today I believe it isn’t that hard to understand. We humans are easily manipulated through all our senses and a great deal of what it means to be a human primate is figuring out how we can manipulate our fellow humans in order to get ourselves up a rung or two on the hierarchy.

It is hard to not be discouraged when we see the rich trying to dismantle what scant safety nets exist for the less fortunate. It has been said that one can never have enough money, and I guess no matter how wealthy the very rich in this country are they feel they need every last bit of money in the system.

If your local Democratic Party is not organized enough to change the social dynamics of Alabama they I don’t think they ought to be cast as a special failure - on the whole political parties aren’t really that influential, compared for example to religions or enclaves of the wealthy.

Yeah—it’s easy to get frustrated and overlook real progress. We haven’t had a proven lynching around the county in decades. Multi-year prison sentences were handed down after our 2014 cross burning. State recently introduced a prison reform bill designed to get our inmate population down to 138% of capacity in only 5 years.

The wheel is also one of our greatest inventions, and I plan to use mine to organize across the border, where there is a better than even chance to nail down a Blue Florida.

Additional point. Simplified, it seems pretty much everyone wants to be able to look down on someone. The subtle, almost subliminal pressure for Confederate whites was ‘if they’re not slaves they won’t be below us.’

Instant karma: Brick thrown by thief bounces off window and hits him in the face (VIDEO)

A determined robber was relentlessly trying to break into a car parked outside of a pub in Drogheda, Ireland, when things suddenly backfired on him.

The suspect had tried using a number of smaller rocks to break the car’s window, all to no avail. Finally, the suspect grabbed a brick and chucked it at the window. However, the brick bounced off of the window and flew back, boomerang style, squarely hitting him in the face and knocking him to the ground.

re: #13 Targetpractice

The Republicans are doing everything that can do to get the Moderates, Indy’s and Non Crazy people in the country pissed off at the GOP.

Some institutions are outright designed to be kind of “hinges” between the mainstream and the fringes.
By mixing up the “implicitly-but-not-quite-explicitly”* extreme bigots (like Fjordman) and the mainstream figures they’re purposefully “mainstreaming” the former.

—-
* Strictly speaking this would not have applied to Fjordman even before the Breivik massacre, because one could already find genocidal hints in some of his comments. But - one had to look for them. In most cases he still tried to maintain the facade of reasonableness.

So glad you all worked on that, Charles. Because it wasn’t just the AP that was reporting it; other outlets said the same thing—that the server was at her house in Chappaqua, N.Y. The NYT has had several stories on this.

nytimes.com

“Late Wednesday, Mrs Clinton posted a message on Twitter saying that she had asked the State Department to make her emails public, but also said that they were still under review. By then it had been revealed that the email server she had used had been regiestered [sic] at her home address in Chappaqua, N.Y., and established by a longtime political aide.”

Morning. Hopefully the last with the crap weather. We have 2 days of real cold to get through yet though.

Sorry to hear about your 14” Sleuth. Is that all total, or is that just from yesterday and overnight? I just looked at a weather map and it looks like you are still getting the tail end of this storm.

We got about an inch, so that map with Columbus at 0.9 is spot on. The problem is, it shifted from wet mist at 33° to wet snow an hour later at 28° and we ended up with a crust of ice/snow on everything. At least that was on the ground and not so much in the trees and on utility wires.

I went to watch a basketball game at a buddies house and the less than 2 mile drive back was pretty exciting. Sounded like morning traffic around Columbus was equally exciting.

Also sounds like south eastern Ohio got slammed pretty hard. There are reports of power outages.

Now the east Coasters are getting it all. I wonder if the Philly folks will get the predicted?

Hillary Cllinton gives a big FU to the AP. She’s doing the right thing in having the State Dept review them for release.

Hillary Clinton Asks State Dept. to Review Emails for Public Release

nytimes.com

If the AP wants to see any “secrecy” they’re not supposed to see, they’ll have to steal them, like Snowjob did.

“Mrs. Clinton is assembling a 2016 presidential campaign that is expected to rethink her operation’s dealings with the news media, which have been a contentious subject in recent days as The Associated Press moved forward with legal action to have its Freedom of Information Act requests to the State Department fulfilled.”

Exactly. IP addresses and domain names don’t map to physical addresses. I mean, I administer my sites from China, but the contact address is in one part of the USA, and the servers are in another. And those are shared servers, so undoubtedly my IP info is shared with dozens of other clients. I’m not sure why this concept is so hard for reporters to grasp.

Greets and saluts from the snowy NYC metro area. Let’s just say I’m not thrilled about the snow, but it does look pretty while it’s falling.

Not pretty? That’d be the state of reporting about tech issues like the AP report claiming that Clinton ran a basement server for her email. You’d think that the AP would run that by someone who knows something about how these things work, instead of using a jump to conclusions mat to decide that something appeared to be improper.

Once other media outlets began running the story, they piled on without doing any actual fact-checking themselves to see if the AP report was correct. After all, this is a wire news service that thousands of media outlets use worldwide. If the AP got basic facts wrong, it will take time for the retraction to work its way around the world (if at all, and certainly not among the right wing conspiracy nutters who think impeachment the moment the name Clinton comes up).

And that’s where we’re at. The AP appears to have misstated/misunderstood basic facts about the Clinton email setup, but that reporting has worked its way into everything else.

214 Justanotherhuman  Mar 5, 2015 6:38:09am

With all the hoopla around HC’s email account, you’d think it was a Gmail acct or something.

I’m not even very tech savvy, but having a “personal” server for her emails, for someone in her position, where prying eyes of staffers and clerical help could leak info she wasn’t required to reveal to the public, or worse, was probably the best course of action.

I suppose we understand fully where this hatchet-job originated, even if we don’t know their identity yet. What gets me is how the MSM fell for it.

Next: Obama has a dozen private servers.

Cheeeez.

215 wheat-dogghazi-bola-trality  Mar 5, 2015 6:42:53am

re: #214 Justanotherhuman

Even if she had an email server in her home, she would still have to register a domain name and arrange for the DNS and MX records through a hosting service, same as the rest of us.

Many companies have their own email servers (I used to manage one for my former employer) for security and speed, and easier management. So, what’s the big deal?

Lots of fog and street flooding on the way home from rehearsal tonight, though. I’m hoping like hell that this is a sign that winter is finally starting to lose its punch.

Yeah, so much for my bold prediction. There’s at least 5” on the ground right now, and it’s supposed to snow all day.

But now that I think about it, I should have a job as a meteorologist. I’m about as right on this as they are.

I’m upset that “respectable” news outlets ran with this story and printed the implications that she was doing something wrong, which she was not.

What they’re also implying is that the public should know more than “progress reports” on diplomacy, such as everything that was discussed. The lack of trust in this Democratic administration, with Rs doing their own “diplomacy” and doing end runs around the admin in an attempt to have some effect on world affairs is disgusting, as is their own statements and implications that the Dems are nothing but ideological incompetents. The pot calling the kettle black, so to speak.

Is this any different then the tech problems present when the big Snowden/Greenwald NSA spy story broke?

I get the feeling sometimes the media likes a story that is too techie and over the heads of the public so they let it rip without too much kickback. And when there is kickback they can blow it off and call those trying to correct it nerds or worse.

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - A few more crashes trickled in during the night for a total of 56 reported traffic crashes from 5 p.m. yesterday until 5 a.m. today. Thirty-seven of the crashes were inside the city limits and nineteen were on county roads. Precipitation remained almost all sleet until well after midnight.

Several crashes resulted in overturned vehicles, but the number of injury crashes has been low. Cars went off the road and had to be abandoned all over town.

(See updated forecast here)

The Clarksville/Montgomery County Emergency Operations Center reopened at 5 a.m. to monitor road conditions and calls-for-service.

Patrol cars have been getting repeatedly stuck in North Clarksville and in the downtown area. Patrol Officers are reporting that even the main roads right now are in terrible condition and seem to be even worse than they were last week. Vehicle traffic is very light at the moment. The Saint Bethlehem area was the scene of many of the crashes. Sergeant Fontella Jones, the CPD night shift supervisor for that area stated emphatically and succinctly, “Stay home if you can!”

And I live in the St. Bethlehem area. :)

The Means of Communication issue of Lapham’s Quarterly contains a fabulous collection of complains and marginal notes by the monks assigned to copy manuscripts in the era before the printing press. With their bitchy complaints—“I am very cold,” “Oh, my hand”—they insert themselves into the holy texts and often, in the process, disrupt the sanctity of the words they’re supposedly copying: “Now I’ve written the whole thing: for Christ’s sake give me a drink.”

A few years before he died in 1261, the Inquisitor and Dominican friarStephen of Bourbon began writing a long treatise on faith—one that included one of the more perplexing incidents of human superstition that he had witnessed. Warning of the dangers of idolatry and superstition, Stephen related an incident that had taken place in the Dombes region of France, near Lyon: while hearing confession, many peasants told him that they had been carrying their children to the grave of Guinefort, a saint Stephen had never heard of before named—when he looked into the manner, he discovered that this supposed Saint Guinefort was, in fact, a greyhound.

Obviously a lot of people are incapable of (or unwilling to try) anything but drunken hook-ups.

Cities Are Quietly Reviving A Jim Crow-Era Trick To Suppress Latino Votes

thinkprogress.org

(snip)

“As the Latino population grows across the country, cities have employed at-large voting to dilute the Latino vote and maintain white control of local governing bodies. Instead of allowing each district to elect its own representative, an at-large system means that unless Hispanic populations reach a majority in the entire city, they will have no influence in electing their local members of government. According to Fair Vote, at-large systems allow 50 percent of voters to control 100 percent of seats, typically resulting in racially homogeneous elected bodies. The tactic used to be popular in the South to discriminate against neighborhoods with large African American communities but is now targeting a new threat: Latinos.” More

Sometimes I wonder how humans ever survived:

a woman with a sick child would take her or him to the spot in the woods where Guinefort’s body lay buried, and there she would leave her child, naked on a bed of straw, with candles burning on each side of the child’s head. The parent would not return until the candles had burned out, and, as Stephen was told, many children did not survive this ordeal of open flame and flammable straw: “Several people told us that while the candles were burning like this they burnt and killed several babies.” Other children, left defenseless in the forest, were instead devoured by wolves. If the child survived the night, the mother would then dunk it nine times in the river—only then, if the child was still alive, would she or he be pronounced cured.

That’s just it. I want to see alternatives. Clinton feels like settling so that we don’t know if there’s someone better out there that we didn’t see coming.

She’s got a lot of baggage, but also more experience than anyone on the GOP side. Both on domestic and foreign policy issues.

I never particularly cared for her personally, but I’d take her over any GOPer, and twice on Sunday.

And maybe part of it is an enthusiasm gap that needs to be addressed.

Germany has a system by which half of its parliament is elected directly by district and half at large based on party affiliation. But that would be a bit too complicated for US voters (it’s complicated enough for the Germans and they have been at it for over 50 years)

So I got to do the reverse trip, pay for the train again, and get home.

At this point things are in limbo. I have a preliminary stand-by status for the same flight tomorrow. And the US Airways telephone reservation service system is overtaxed and currently not taking calls. :p

Man Can’t Sue Applebee’s For Getting Facial Burns While Praying Over Sizzling Fajitas

In March 2010, Hiram Jimenez visited the restaurant in Burlington County with his brother, Rafael, and ordered a steak fajita, which was brought to him in a sizzling skillet, according to court records. The waitress allegedly did not warn him the dish was hot.

[…]

Jimenez said he panicked and knocked the plate of food on his lap, causing more burns. None of the burns left any scarring, records show. He sued in state Superior Court, claiming he suffered serious injury after the restaurant negligently gave him hot food.

The lower court dismissed the case, finding that the danger posed by the sizzling fajita plate was “open and obvious” and that Jimenez chose to put his face close to it. Jimenez appealed, and an appeals panel agreed with the lower court’s findings.

People who haven’t lived in snowy climes see eighteen inches of snow as no big deal. I mean, what could go wrong in a foot-and-a-half of snow? Those of us who have lived with the stuff answer, “Everything.”

It’s behind a paywall, but the text has already been copied on various forums.

Anders Breivik: Did Norway’s unrepentant mass murderer have an unhealthy relationship with his mother?

I guess it’s a highbrow way to call a person a motherfucker in a headline. Anyway:

When he was still in the womb, Behring half regretted that she had left it too late to abort him. When he was born, she found him defective. As a toddler, she wanted him medicated for tantrums that only she seemed to witness. Mother and son came to the attention of social services. Seierstad quotes extensively from their reports: one or two of them come close to being clairvoyant. They describe Behring as an unstable mother, thought to be suffering from borderline personality disorder, as exemplified by the abrupt vacillations of her feelings towards her son between overt love and disgust. “I wish you were dead,” they heard her say to him. “Anders’s care situation is so precarious,” a child psychiatrist warned about the boy, then three, “that he is at risk of developing more serious psychopathology.”

When, on July 22, 2011, police confronted Behring about what her son had been doing on Utoya, the first thing she said was: “How could he do this to me?” The second was: “It’s almost worse than being lesbian or homosexual. It’s the very worst thing that could happen to a person. What will people say about me?” Seventeen years earlier, a friend of Anders’ had finally spelt out to him what everyone in their circle took to be self-evident: “Anders,” he said gently to his friend, “come out of the closet.”

[…]

The layout of the apartment implies something not quite right about relations between mother and son. There is only one bathroom and, to get to it, Anders would have had to pass through his mother’s bedroom. When he was little, things at home seem to have been more intimate still. In public, Behring, we know from the social workers’ notes, would aggressively discuss her sexual fears and fantasies in inappropriate settings, such as her son’s kindergarten. Seierstad tells me about neighbours of Behring’s during Anders’s childhood who had felt uncomfortable about the number of men coming in and out of her apartment at night. Were they paying her? A woman remembers meeting Behring when she was six. Behring had told her that the geometric patterns on her bedroom curtains “look like people f***ing”.

There are other troubling stories in Anders’s childhood: Behring complaining to a social worker that her five-year-old son pressed up against her at night and would “force himself on her”; Behring talking about the undressing game she played with Anders — who can get their clothes off first? There were times when Behring became depressed to the point of near incapacity. Social services arranged for a married couple to look after Anders on weekends but they were disconcerted when Behring asked Anders’s weekend-father to allow Anders to touch his penis as she felt it was important for a boy’s sexuality. On her death bed, Behring hinted strongly to Seierstad that she had been molested by her brothers. Separately she’d said: “Obviously, what happened to Anders has to do with my childhood too.” Shortly after her adult son moved into her apartment, Behring split up with a long term partner and Anders gave her a vibrator.

Wonkette reported on an Arkansas Times exposé about Harris and the Christian pre-school he runs with his wife, a school that employed the sexual predator who raped the 6-year-old girl.

When the Times asked Harris why he handed over his adopted daughter to a sexual predator without ever consulting state authorities or the foster care system, the legislator quoted the Christian Bible’s Book of Isaiah, saying, “No weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you.”

Dug up some more info on Harris, included on the page, from a few years back.

Harris’ business operates on almost $900,000 a year and serves about 150 kids. Of that, all but about 6 percent comes in the form of state and federal dollars in a program aimed at developmentally disabled and poor children. The money provides Harris and his wife almost $60,000 a year in salary and benefits. It also covers the mortgage on his privately owned building and rent payments to the Harrises.

So the government spending hawk lives on government spending, a double dip of payroll, perks and rent payments.

Dean of Law School - Hey, Elizabeth, didn’t I hear you say at lunch that one of your grandmothers was a Native American?

The Governor says there have been two major interstate issues. One is I-65, mainly southbound between Elizabethtown and the Bardstown junction, where hundreds of vehicles became stuck in heavy snow. The other was I-24 in western Kentucky between Cadiz and Eddyville. The westbound lanes became too much for about 400 vehicles that had trouble navigating through the snow and ice and the hills. It is slow going clearing both interstates, but the Governor says they are making progress. About 200 vehicles were moved from I-24 at the time of the conference call. The Kentucky National Guard, Kentucky State Police and the state Transportation Department are trying to clear the roads before drivers start running out of fuel as the temperatures are expected to drop tonight.

It’s behind a paywall, but the text has already been copied on various forums.

Anders Breivik: Did Norway’s unrepentant mass murderer have an unhealthy relationship with his mother?

I guess it’s a highbrow way to call a person a motherfucker in a headline. Anyway:

One of these days our mental health systems will be as effective as our physical health systems.

One of these days.

Get that man a bottle. I mean if this was a real tyranny, he wouldn’t even be allowed to have his lame little theme park but this little prick expects the taxpayer to pick up the tab for him. More of that famed conservative personal responsibility in action I’m sure.

The fact that Ken Ham has said that they aren’t going to be hiring gays, or anybody that doesn’t accept a literal reading of the Bible wouldn’t have anything to do with that stopping of the tax incentives.

If you’re going to take public monies, you have to follow the public law.

And Jeb Bush was using a private email account that he controlled to do all of his official business. But not to worry, he’s released the cherry-picked emails he wants you to see onto the web…except about 12,000 of them that had to be zapped because they contained people’s personal information like SSNs.

Wingnuts are convinced that “separation of church and state” either A) doesn’t exist or B) think it only applies to the federal government. That if a state wants to declare an official religion, then by Dog, the Constitution doesn’t apply to them.

re: #526 Justanotherhuman

The project was getting a tax exemption as part of a business incentive package. When the project started hiring, they explicitly stated they would only hire Christians, which violated state labor laws against religious discrimination, which made them ineligible for the tax exemption.
