Arkansas State GOP Lawmaker Gives Adopted Daughter to Pedophile

Invokes the Bible when confronted with the facts
US News • Views: 41,996

Possibly the most horrifying story you’ll read this week:

The Harrises had adopted the girl and her 3-year-old sister through the Arkansas Department of Human Services (DHS). The couple also has three biological sons who are older than the girls. Pictures of the girls appeared on Justin Harris’ social media accounts in early 2013 (the images have since been deleted), and Harris announced on Twitter and Facebook on March 6, 2013, that the couple had officially adopted the girls. Because DHS adoptions require an in-home trial period of at least six months prior to papers being signed, the girls likely entered the home no later than September 2012.

And then, something evidently went amiss in the household. For unknown reasons, about six months after the adoption was finalized, the Harrises sent the two girls to live with Eric Francis and his family in Bella Vista.

According to an Arkansas State Police investigative report prepared by Sgt. Kimberly A. Warren dated April 3, 2014, she contacted Crimes Against Children Division Supervisor Terri Ward who advised that “Mr. and Mrs. Harris placed the girls into the care of Eric Francis and his wife Stacy [sic] Francis in October 2013.” The report further states that “It was later reported to the Department of Human Services that Mr. and Mrs. Harris had left the children with another family and had basically abandoned them. This incident was reported to the child abuse hotline and the children were interviewed.”

After her husband’s arrest, Stacey Francis told a state police investigator that she and Eric “met [the girls] through friends of theirs, Justin and Marsha Harris, who were looking for a new adoption plan for themselves … Stacey Francis reported that she and Eric Francis brought [the girls] into their home with the hopes of being able to adopt them.” The Francises already had three older children — two girls and a boy — who were adopted internationally. Stacey Francis said the Harris girls stayed with her and Eric “until February or March of 2014.” That means the Harrises left the girls with Eric Francis and his wife even after firing him.

The sexual abuse of the 6-year-old girl came to light only because of a call placed to the state’s child maltreatment hotline on Friday, March 28, from an unidentified caller who said the Harrises “gave their adoptive children to a family” and “that family in turn gave the children to another family” and that they had “continued to accept adoption subsidy money even after giving the children away.” Investigators evidently determined that this third home was a safe place for the girls because they remain there today.

And after all that, Harris thinks he’s the victim.

When asked whether he rehomed his adoptive children with another family, he replied, “I’m not confirming that.” When asked about the statements made in the State Police report in the Francis case, Harris said he hadn’t read the file because of the disturbing descriptions of sexual abuse that they contain.

Harris then quoted Isaiah 54:17: “No weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you.”

“You don’t know what we’ve been through this past year. You have no idea what my family has been through,” he said emphatically. “I don’t care what the people of Arkansas think about me. I don’t care if I lose my position. I care what my wife thinks about me, and I care what my three sons think about me.”

Harris himself already has a bit of a history

Hypocrite watch: Rep. Justin Harris

Harris makes a living running what he calls a “church preschool,” Growing God’s Kingdom. In addition to preaching the Gospel, he preaches the word of reduced government spending and lower taxes. He reportedly once remarked government spending never created a job. Funny thing, though. Harris’ business depends almost entirely on taxpayers for its existence and the money he and other family members make from it. The Blue Hog Report did some digging into the small business and found this:

Harris’ business operates on almost $900,000 a year and serves about 150 kids. Of that, all but about 6 percent comes in the form of state and federal dollars in a program aimed at developmentally disabled and poor children. The money provides Harris and his wife almost $60,000 a year in salary and benefits. It also covers the mortgage on his privately owned building and rent payments to the Harrises.

So the government spending hawk lives on government spending, a double dip of payroll, perks and rent payments.

Thanks to conservative blogger Jason Tolbert, we know of another bit of Harris hypocrisy. Tolbert reported — in defense of Harris — that a University of Arkansas lobbyist had been putting out the word that somebody might make hay of the fact that Harris has perhaps a dozen undocumented students among his 150 pre-schoolers. Maybe they’re legal, maybe not. He is not required to prove citizenship to provide taxpayer-funded services to these kids and thank goodness for that. Blogger Tolbert seemed perturbed at the UA’s tough lobbying against Harris’ legislation to provide a little kindness to older Arkansas children on college costs.

No defense of Harris was possible. An anti-tax, anti-government-spending, anti-illegal-alien legislator is living off a government program that includes payments for kids who haven’t produced proof of citizenship.

This is horrible. If this pedophile Francis raped a 6 yr old, he more than likely also raped the 3 yr old who wouldn’t necessarily be able to describe what happened to her. I hope both girls are getting the kind of care they really need, not just another “home”.

Home can be hell, and has been for these poor kids in their short lives.

Harris then quoted Isaiah 54:17: “No weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you.”

There is one weapon that will prevail against you, and there is a tongue that cannot be refuted.

You’ll encounter them when you shuffle off this mortal coil, Rep. Harris. I sincerely doubt that you will care much for how it is used against you and what it has to say to you.

How would a dead person encounter anything? Don’t expect people to be punished by a sky fairy; That’s fantasy. You might be able to scare this guy with his own superstitions, but surviving as a magical spirit after death is not possible in the real world.

Most of the time we manage to have a space here where I feel like folks with religious beliefs are treated with respect by those who don’t share them.

I guess all of the time would be unrealistic.

In support of No Country For Old Haters, as an apatheist, the one thing that really gets my goat is adherents to religious faiths whose tenets relegate me to some kind of hell, or consider me unclean or lost. That is inherently disrespectful, not to mention constant.

One does feel like striking back occasionally with stories about magical sky gods and supernatural beings.

Yeah, weird how I don’t see any of the believers here getting in the face of atheists—which they’d rightly complain about—but apparently some don’t hold themselves to the same standard of civility. I always wonder if the people who do that and have family members, employers, etc. who are religious behave the same with them, or if it’s reserved for strangers on the internet.

Ok.

I don’t see that happening in the comments here. Or attempts at conversion, or making religion a big deal and trying to make other Lizards feel bad for it not being so, or whatever.

Romantic Heretic’s comment was directed at Rep. Harris, for all that he will never read it, and was in fact referencing Rep. Harris’s belief system. I don’t think that supports such a disrespectful comment towards all religions with belief in some kind of afterlife in response.

Actually, I’m an agnostic. I know nothing, absolutely nothing about the Divine or whatever you want to call it.

I was just speaking as if I was talking to Rep. Harris in terms he would understand.

I didn’t interpret it as attacking anyone other than Harris.

Humility folks please.

While I have my own opinions on religious questions, I’m humble enough to understand the limits of my understanding. I can’t declare any belief as TRVTH or otherwise, neither can anyone else. Nor can I understand the role that religion may serve in the life of others, independent of the whole question about whether deities may exist.

RH was responding in terms that the GOP asshole would understand. I can understand that.

And I think we all agree that the idiot under discussion is a vile, disgusting asshole.

What part of global in global warming do these nitwits not get. Just because the Eastern half of the US is cold doesn’t disprove global warming. Global temps keep rising, so even if there’s a locally cold spot (during winter no less) you’re not disproving global warming.

Just ask the folks out West about global warming. Or Australia, which had another record setting summer. Or warmer temperatures across the oceans and elsewhere in the world.

This sounds much like other problems that have arisen in the unregulated “Christian” (wingnut) adoption circles: once the kids are in-country, their welfare and happiness (and safety!) is less important than them being saved. With the direct result that they’re not really treated like children, let alone sons/daughters. So stuff like this happens—a child just gets handed off to people who look “OK” (have the right wingnut credentials), with no formal accounting of who’s responsible.

Australia is another hotbed of AGW denialism, which is ironic: Its habitability has always been marginal, and the last few years have shown that uninhabitability is on the horizon. Really head-in-the-sand thinking.

Harris no more believes in this stuff than you do. If he did, he would be shitting his pants in fear and running around everywhere trying to make amends before it’s too late. I see this with my evil brother “Judas.” He knows the truth about his Potemkin village of a life, he is in terrible health and could kick off at any time, and he professes a fundamentalist superstition, yet he routinely calls down fire and brimstone on gays and liberals, for example, and continues to portray himself not just as a righteous man, but as an actual martyr for Christ. It is almost as though he takes perverse pride in hypocrisy and fraud as ends in themselves.

PERVASIVE WALKER BUDGET LEADS EVERY COUNTY TO SEARCH FOR ITS OWN ‘DOWNER WOODS’

The growing community anger over Gov. Scott Walker’s effort to delete conservation and architectural protection for Downer Woods — a beloved nature haven and historical beacon of the UWM campus— could quickly radiate statewide.

Legislators in 71 counties outside Milwaukee are only now becoming aware of serpents within the thousand or more deletions and adjustments in Walker’s two year budget proposal. But their own residents are already there in blogs and bothersome questions to local editors and officials. They are worried about their own backyard, from absence of regulation on frac sand mining to manure dumped directly into nearby rivers.

39 BlueGrl21  Mar 5, 2015 1:16:47pm

When asked about the statements made in the State Police report in the Francis case, Harris said he hadn’t read the file because of the disturbing descriptions of sexual abuse that they contain.

The only thing I can think of as a response is, “You motherfucker. You put her there and now it’s too much for you?” He should have to read the descriptions, the hospital reports, see the photos, and listen to the girls tell their stories to his face. Actions have consequences, you hypocritical ass.

And for the record…I am a Christian who is not big on religion. I do not believe in hell because any God who would consign a soul to eternal damnation is no deity, they’re a projection of our human need for revenge on a concept of a deity. I love the pagan rituals we adopted and I celebrate Samhain, Beltane, Yule, and others with their associated goddesses because I don’t think the universe really cares what I call my spiritual expression. I have no desire to tell any other human being how to live and the government is a completely different space than my faith. My faith is mine, I build it like a bird’s nest out of different ideas that resonate with me, and no one gets to tell me or anyone else what to believe or not believe.

I am also a Texan that believes in climate change. But I’ve got nothin’ when it comes to a lot of my fellow Texans. No excuses. They’re just stupid people.

I mean what did they expect when they reelected this buffoon, that this time might be different? As children my sister and I were scared stiff into both fundamentalist Protestantism and after my mother died, Catholicism. We little kids were “sinners” and condemned to hell if we didn’t accept the faith and repent, in the formalities of both sects. Setting foot inside a church as I grew older made me so depressed I couldn’t stay there without panicking.

To this day, I simply don’t understand the “inspiration” a person gets from seeing another person hanging from a cross.

*SIGH* You know what gets me about that crap? These extremist assholes pretend that they’re practicing some sort of pure, original form of Islam, yet from the time when Islam first began to spread all the way through its golden age of empire—when it’s influence stretched from western China to the European Mediterranean—all of those ancient artifacts survived. None of the caliphs seemed to feel the need to destroy them. I guess they weren’t Real MuslimsTM according to the Daesh thugs.

Well, there was that Egyptian Sultan around 1204 who tried to dismantle the Pyramids. He got most of the limestone cladding off except towards the top of Khafre’s pyramid and gouged a big hole in the side of Menkaure’s pyramid—that took as much labor as he was able to mobilize for a couple of years and he finally gave up.

65 Uraniabce  Mar 5, 2015 1:40:10pm

There’s so many levels of appalling in that article. And this is far from the first time “re homing” has been a disaster for the children involved. I hope Rep. Harris gets asked some hard questions about this. But my hopes are faint ones.

OT, but I need advice and we have Lizards here who do the freelance graphics art thing.

I have been working on this Android app and things are getting to the point where I am hoping to put it on the Google Play store in the next couple of weeks. I’m not putting a lot of images into the app but there’s one pretty unavoidable one - the logo/icon for the app. I’ve just been using the generic one Google provides while developing but I’d like to do something more professional for the actual release one.

I think from Android’s documentation that I need the icon in multiple sizes maxxing out at 640pixels. I have a rough idea of what I am thinking of and could possibly provide photo guidance but I am looking for it to be a vector illustration.

Do you guys have any idea what the cost for something along those lines would be? The budget on this isn’t huge because I don’t expect to make any money on the project. (The hope is for returns in the form of a job interview.) On the other hand, I am enough of a perfectionist that this is important.

I always wonder if the people who do that and have family members, employers, etc. who are religious behave the same with them, or if it’s reserved for strangers on the internet.

I’m pretty close to Chicago, so religion at work isn’t the problem it more often is in red states. I have one manager who’s still religious. The rest of us were raised Christian but grew out of it.

My brother’s family is so religious that they can’t fully engage with reality, and think evolution is a Liberal hoax. They’re aware that I do not share their beliefs. Also that I don’t think they should be watching Fox news. We still get along just fine because no one is thin-skinned, and we’re all good, well-meaning people.

I don’t feel the need to pretend that the supernatural is real to make religious people more comfortable. That would be totally dishonest since I’ve never seen any evidence to support that kind of belief, and no one who believes in the supernatural has been able to provide any.

If someone could provide evidence of a god, I wouldn’t worship it, since being powerful isn’t a reason to worship something, but I would study it to see if it’s a threat and to look for weaknesses. If its ethics were congruent with mine, I might even like it.

I have to agree with you on that. Plus I think Walker unlike Jeb is someone who appeals to the corporate donor cookie jar but also the wacko base. So yeah Wakler would be my bet right now. AK House Speaker wants to just put the whole thing behind them:

The Democrat-Gazettte article sought opinions from legislators about Harris’ status. I think any discussion of that is, at best, premature. But I hope I misread House Speaker Jeremy Gillam’s quote:

House Speaker, Rep. Jeremy Gillam, R-Judsonia, said there would be no sanctions or repercussions from the legislative body in this case.

“At this time, that situation, as far as we’re concerned from the House perspective, is past tense, and we’re moving forward and looking at the remainder of our calendar and finishing the month strong,” Gillam said.

I agree there’s no basis for the House to judge Harris at this moment. But I hope Gillam doesn’t mean he’s sweeping away for all time the question of whether Harris’ position as a legislator had any influence in the adoption process or its aftermath. I certainly hope he doesn’t meant the whole question of rehoming, as illustrated by this case, is not worthy of review.

PS — The nationally popular blog Wonkette takes a look at the fullness of Justin Harris’ legislative record. A model of progressively it is not. But that isn’t likely to cause him to be unpopular in the Republican-controlled House.

I think your hubris is overwhelming your humanity. Folks here don’t need to be proselytized by anyone, which is basically what you are doing.

While you’ve never seen any evidence that supports religious beliefs, you also can’t state absolutely that a deity or deities do not exist. There is no possible way for you to know. As you note, you’ve never seen any evidence so you’ve reached a conclusion which is consistent with your observations. However that doesn’t mean you are correct. That’s the hubris talking.

Something else to consider: it’s very easy for agnostics/atheists to view religion as a crutch. And for some folks that is certainly true. But as a very wise man once told me, it’s not nice to go around kicking people’s crutches out from under them.

There is nothing intellectually dishonest about realizing that you aren’t omniscient and being respectful of others.

That doesn’t mean you should allow religious folks to bully you or others. But if people aren’t getting in your face about their religion then please don’t do it to them.

I’m not apoplectic, I’m totally chill, and slacking off at work. Coworkers would notice if I was remotely upset. I just tend to point out when people make claims that are obviously impossible. Is that wrong?

In this case, the person making the post already knew it was impossible and was just turning a right-wing christian’s beliefs back on himself.

It was just religious bystanders that got upset about not having a safe space for false beliefs, when this site is all about debunking false beliefs.

Why should religion get special treatment? A lot of skeptics do this too, just because they want to get along, and religion is more popular than other questionable beliefs in America.

re: #89 CuriousLurker

Belief, by it’s very definition, doesn’t require empirical evidence.

I think this is a common dodge that religious people attempt. A belief that doesn’t require evidence is just as likely to be false as it is to be true. When there’s evidence to the contrary, it’s actually probably false.

Science does require it. I wold never attempt to disprove science by way of belief/faith,

I’d hope not, since scientists, unlike religious people demand evidence.

and science will never be able to erase belief, at least not for everyone. I recognize these things, do you?

Of course. There will always be people who will continue to believe whatever they want in the face of evidence. Look at #TCOT or #TGDN to see this in action every single day.

This wasn’t my first time down-dinging you over your obnoxious comments

In support of No Country For Old Haters, as an apatheist, the one thing that really gets my goat is adherents to religious faiths whose tenets relegate me to some kind of hell, or consider me unclean or lost. That is inherently disrespectful, not to mention constant.

One does feel like striking back occasionally with stories about magical sky gods and supernatural beings.

Striking back? Except that did not happen. Nobody relegated you to anything. Romantic heretic spoke in the context of his or her own beliefs about a rather repulsive dude with religion on his tongue. I don’t look at anyone differently based on their religious beliefs or lack of them any more than I do their sexuality or race.

ROFL… I’ve been drinking mainly tea while hanging out at Casa Del Steve, that way I don’t have a full pot tempting me. I found that I like the Plantation Mint (got it by accident) is pretty nice, but only in the afternoon. Don’t much care for it in the morning, rather have Earl Gray or Constant Comment. (and don’t even get me started on those abominations called ‘Herbal Tea’)

RBS

It’s all FNB’s fault. She was always talking about how great her AreoPress is, so I finally broke down and bought one to avoid having to deal with cleaning out my little stove-top espresso maker every time I used it. Once I started suing the AeroPress, I was hooked not only on the results in terms of flavor, but also on how fast & easy to clean it is.

I used to go through four 10 oz. bricks of Bustelo per month; now it’s somewhere between 6-7 bricks. Tea? The only time I drink it is when I feel like spending the time to make Pakistani style chai or when I have a stomach ache (then it’s the herbal stuff like peppermint or Red Zinger).

Is not liking to see our greatest tool to educate ourselves used to spread superstition really an ax to grind?

Focused like a laser beam, I see.

RH was mocking Shithead Harris and you give them a bunch of shit for it. After that, a bunch of people are scratching their heads (myself included), wondering WTF your deal is, when you decide to go off on your little screed about CL.

re: #96 No Country For Old Haters

I think this is a common dodge that religious people attempt. A belief that doesn’t require evidence is just as likely to be false as it is to be true. When there’s evidence to the contrary, it’s actually probably false.

I’d hope not, since scientists, unlike religious people demand evidence.

Of course. There will always be people who will continue to believe whatever they want in the face of evidence. Look at #TCOT or #TGDN to see this in action every single day.

I’ll keep in mind that you find honesty obnoxious. I’ve seen people like you drive out others who understand that the supernatural is imaginary. That won’t happen this time.

This will not start me downdinging you when I disagree, even though I find spreading religion to be obnoxious and toxic.

You go too far.

Adventurers Complete First-Ever Winter Thru-Hike Of Pacific Crest Trail

According to the Pacific Crest Trail Association, no one is known to have completed a wintertime through-hike of the 2,650-mile trail before these two did it. There is no official record keeper for American hiking achievements.

“I trust what they say [about being the first,]” PCTA trail information specialist Jack Haskel said. “Justin and Shawn are both extremely experienced long-distance wilderness travelers. They had all the right skills and knowledge. It was very risky. I’m impressed.”

Heather Anderson, who holds the record for the fastest through-hike of the Pacific Crest Trail by a woman, called Forry and Lichter’s winter traverse “incredible” and “remarkable.” The Bellingham-based hiker wrote on her blog that she was lucky enough to tag along for about 100 miles of the journey in the San Gabriel Mountains.

Lichter said he knows of only one previous attempt at a winter traverse of the national scenic trail. That northbound journey ended in tragedy soon after it started in 1983. A husband and wife descending into Wrightwood, California, veered off of a side trail into a canyon and fell to their deaths.

The problem was just the volume of water he was discharging, plus the open door.

CL, you asked about Eurasianism the other day.

Here’s one Polish “Eurasian” (it’s not an exclusively Russian phenomenon):

Mateusz Piskorski is a Polish political activist. He was born 18 May 1977 in Szczecin, Poland.

[…]

As a student he joined the Polish People’s Party. He was also active in various societies promoting the idea of Pan-Slavism and Slavic nationalism.[1] He published pamphlets which have been described as “hardcore neo-Nazi”.[2] He himself described his mindset as “traditionalist nationalist”.[1] In 2000 he quit the People’s Party and in 2002 joined the Self-Defence of the Republic of Poland party to become the assistant to Member of Parliament Jan Łၜzny. He brought with him a cohort of neo-nazi skinheads into the party.[2] […]

In 2007 he co-founded the European Centre for Geopolitical Analysis, a Szczecin-based think-tank on international relations and geopolitics,[5] Piskorski served as an observer for the 2014 Crimean referendum[6] for a organization which according to Newsweek is Russian-funded.[7] In 2015 he co-funded a new party called “Zmiana” in Poland, aiming at spreading information regarding War in Donbass and invited representatives of Novorussia to inform the Polish public about their views about the war and represent equally the other side of the conflict in Polish public debates.[8][9][10][11]

Zmiana is positioned by some on the left of the political spectrum, but it is really a mix of far-right and far-left elements who are pro-Putin, anti-Ukraine, anti-NATO etc.

The treasurer of the party, Ludmila Dobrzyniecka, is also a member of the “Communist Youth of Poland”, which uses images like these:

Funny, I’d been hearing the exact opposite, namely BOEHNER NEVER INTENDED TO FIGHT!! and HE AND MCCONNELL ARE OBAMA’S PUPPETS!!!. Because, of course, they’ve convinced that all they had to do was hold out for however long it took Democrats to fold and agree to allow a vote on the House DHS bill. Especially since this is the group of people who need to be convinced that separation of church and state is worthwhile for it to remain in place.

I think those Christians would agree that they don’t want religion in the government or government in their churches. We’re some of the strongest advocates for separation of church and state, always have been. but like people have said, Christianity is not some huge behemoth of people who believe the same things. I am closer in belief to Sufi Islam than I am to Pentecostal Christianity.

What gets under MY skin is when people I assume I am an idiot, anti-science, and living in a fantasy because I choose to believe there is SOMETHING that is a presence in our universe. I am, most assuredly, none of those things. I struggle with my faith, as I am sure many people have throughout their whole lives. I constantly question and refine what I believe. I am not bothered by any kind of critique or questions. But I cannot have a conversation with a zealot and there are zealots of any kind of belief. Atheism is a belief too. It’s a belief that there is nothing beyond what we can scientifically prove. None of us will know that until we die. Period.

I may be wrong about there being a God. I’m fine with that. My belief in no way conflicts with science, government, or the rights of others to have their own structure to define their reality. There may be nothing when i die. OK. There may be pasta everywhere, there may be choirs of angels, there may be a parallel universe, i may get reincarnated as a tree sloth. Don’t know. I will one day. In the meantime, I like the Jesus dude. I like yelling at a deity when i’m pissed at how my life is going. I like saying “thank you” when I am happy.

So, people who choose to tell me I’m an idiot for having a belief in an “other” can kiss my rainbow fairy ass.

I’ve been using a Chrome extension allowing me to watch Netflix as though I were in other countries. It has increased my streaming options immensely and I’ve made some interesting discoveries. Like for example, the French Netflix has the first 5 seasons of the Big Bang Theory without subtitles or dubbing.

This is just sad. I feel depressed after even reading it because it reminds me of 2 little girls approaching me when I was doing yard work a few years ago at my son’s house. They asked me if I wanted to buy some “rocks” (real ones) for Mother’s Day. We already suspected the parents were selling drugs; it seemed to be known in the neighborhood and there was always traffic going to their house.

Mom Arrested After Daughters Found Trying to Sell Their Toys

nbcmiami.com

“A central Florida mother has been arrested after authorities say they found her two daughters going door to door trying to sell their toys.

“The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office says two girls, ages 7 and 9, were walking about half a mile from their home Thursday. The girls told deputies they were selling their toys “to help mommy stay in the house.”

“The deputies found the mother, April Emery, at home sleeping. When authorities awoke her, she allegedly said she was angry because the girls had forgotten to wake her up so she could take them to school.”

And I always thought it was the parent’s job to wake up the kids, not vice versa…

Well, allow me to retort:

1. Things which can be disproved are not true.

2. Things which cannot be disproved, and for which much supportive evidence exists are probably true.

3. Things which cannot be disproved, and for which NO supportive evidence exists still may be true.

The existence of a god or gods falls in the third category.

And some of us don’t require 100% certainty to come to a conclusion firm enough to be acted on as if it were known to be true.

re: #9 Romantic Heretic

Actually, I’m an agnostic. I know nothing, absolutely nothing about the Divine or whatever you want to call it.

I was just speaking as if I was talking to Rep. Harris in terms he would understand.

ETA: This sort of nastiness is why my wife doesn’t post here, or even lurk, anymore. She is a Christian, and a good one, and she got very tired of being lumped in with the batshit crazies that claim to be Christian.

TBH, I have seen both sides do this (alright, all several sides, so call me the magical balance fairy).

I realize I’m late to this, but for the most part, this is a pretty cool scene where people of various faiths (babushka and curious lurker and william barrett [last name escapes me] and dark falcon, etc.) get along enough to enjoy the things we have in common and overlook the occasional differences (sometimes not so occasional in the case of D_F).

I’m an atheist, now, after having been a very fervent fundamentalist. I know and work with lots of really neat people who are Christians. I don’t try to convert them, and they don’t try to convert me. But sometimes tongues slip, and sometimes people had harder paths to go down to get where they were.

So I don’t begrudge anyone the occasional lashing out about sky fairies, just as I don’t begrudge someone explaining the various faith texts.

Maybe that’s just me, and maybe I’m way past time on this thread. Cheers, Lizards :)

Having a calm discussion about what texts say, without any effort to convert (and I have never seen that at LGF*), etc., isn’t the same thing as a derogatory comment towards (in this case) believers. The equivalent would be discussion of the evidence that led one to conclude that there is no deity, which I think several Lizards have done respectfully and not received downdings or pushback for.

Just my two cents again.

Fittingly enough, that fits in with the discussions about religion, as it’s pretty much libertarian dogma that says the “free market” will ensure that businesses operate in a manner that maximizes safety while minimizing costs. Because if they don’t, these devotees believe, then the company will be sued (HA!) or will end up unprofitable due to people refusing to do business with them (HAHA!!). Unfortunately for libertarians, their dogma relates to propositions that can easily be tested. Furthermore the tests that have been done (e.g., the gilded age in the US) showed results that were clearly unacceptable.

I am aware that a standard libertarian response to this devastating criticism is to assert that the ills of the gilded exclusively arose from corruption of government by business interests. Thus the only real problem back then was having a government that was powerful enough to be worth corrupting.

Laughable.

Because we know that if the President had signed the bill or the veto had been overriden, the pipeline would have magically sprung up from the aether and oil companies would have ceased moving oil by rail overnight.

The most offensive display I’ve had the misfortune to be subjected to was when I was being prepped for major surgery. After the surgeon and anesthesiologist left and I was alone with the nurse she started in earnest with how I needed to accept Jesus and give myself over blah blah and she kept grabbing my hand to pray over me and shit. I was already a bit drugged and very, very ill but still managed to squeak out that I preferred to place my faith in the surgical team. She did not take the hint. I was too ill to tell her to fuck off but man, I wanted to.

How incredibly unprofessional of her. Ugh.

And now he’s trying to blame it on Democrats who pulled their support for the bill, even though those same Democrats said weeks ago that they’d be willing to hold support for the bill until after the March 24th negotiation deadline. Why did they make that announcement? Because Boehner decided to involve Bibi in our foreign policy and they realized that what had been a bipartisan move had turned into a partisan fight. And Mitch didn’t help matters yesterday by announcing, less than a week after Bibi’s speech, that he was gonna plow ahead with the bill anyway.

The Republican Party once again proves to be its own worst enemy.

Right now she’s on the storage hutch knocking small containers of cat food to the floor.

Same thing in my case, but I cut things too tightly coming off a ramp trying to stay clear of a car wanting to go up ramp. So I creased that door, and just that door, on the support beam at the inside corner of the arc I was on. And, of course, the contact came when I was half-way through the turn.

You know possibly the worse place to get hit in an A1 Rabbit body is the side door. I’ve had several VWs…two A1 bodies, ‘79 and ‘81.

I almost got hit in the side one day by a guy running a red light, one block from my house. I caught him coming pretty quick between two houses up the street I was about to intersect and was already thinking…he’s going too fast. I saw him enter the intersection and I was on my brakes which slowed me up enough to t-bone him.

It totaled my Rabbit, but I was fine. I managed not to mash into the engine as that was recently rebuilt with some go faster parts. Transverse location helped that. I was just damn glad I hit him in his side over him getting me in mine. And mine was a 2-door too. That’s a big opening in a car that wasn’t real strong from the sides.

The newer VWs are much much stronger in side impacts. But those first gen Rabbits…a side impact bar on a 4-point roll cage would’ve helped!

According to this screed, they are claiming that the railway is charging $30 per barrel to transport oil - which, according to my math means they are charging something like $19,000 per tanker car
((~34,500 gallon capacity for DOT-111 tanker/55 gallons(= 1 barrel)) * $30per barrel)
I think it is a safe assumption that this guy’s math is WAY off.

I won’t even go into the safety record of railways after they were basically deregulated, and the NTSB severely defunded in the early 2000s by the GW Bush administration.

My mom, back during her “born again” days used to not only speak in tongues, but also do that automatic writing stuff. I can’t even begin to tell you how much I hated all that fanatical, extremist crap.

Imagine that you’re a 14- or 15-year-old angsty having a bad attitude day for whatever reason—as if a teenager even needs one— and instead of trying to talk to you or advise you, your mom starts trying to lay hands on you and chanting “I rebuke the devil in you, blah, blah, blah…” Yeah, I’m not having a sucky day, I’m effing possessed by Satan. Aaaargh! It sets my hair on fire just remembering it (and I’m 50-something now).

I’m a certified VW nut. I’d love to have a new GTi…or even another new Golf. But my current Rabbit is quite fun and does all I need for now. I understand the 2.5 liter 5-cylinder Rabbit engines, like I have now, have been bullet proof. I only have 74,000 on my ‘08 and it looks showroom new. Clean inside too. So, maybe in a couple I’ll pick up a used GTi and play with both of them.

Heck, one reason I bought the Rabbit, is in its simple appointments, no leather, no sunroof it weighs less than a GTi and with the 170 HP engine is only a few tenths off a GTi. I don’t drive that fast anyway (on the straights), but I can pass with ease.

He already found out - they had a big fight on Twitter recently. Chuck is just shamelessly sucking up, like the weasel he is.

And this is why he posted that tweet:

I once spent some time reading articles on what an average chimp can do to an adult human. And about what chimps sometimes did to their loving owners of many years.

I won’t ever see all those cute photos and videos of people with chimps in cutie clothes in the same light. Nor would I, frankly, dare to approach a chimp, no matter how “tame”.

Oddly enough, the Older Boy’s Girlfriend was talking about this just the other day, and noted that apes are smart enough to go for stuff we really value, like our faces, fingers, and dicks. Also so strong you can’t fucking stop them if they do.

Her thought was that what’s dangerous about them is not how different they are from us, but rather now similar.

I wanted a Jetta TDI for my daily driver, but settled for my Chevy Malibu. It’s been a reasonably sound decision, but I want a standard transmission and I love diesel engines.

Great post.

How about an article on the budget provision that would require the county to be the responsible party for ANNUAL property assessment rather than the seven year cycle normally done by the local municipality? This change is proposed by the DOR as a “bold new plan” to streamline state government. But the reality is that it will eliminate 5 state DOR positions, yet create a need for each county to add staff to get the work done. In our rural northern county it will require us to hire 6-7 staff, plus about $800,000 a year in expenses. All the state municipal associations are opposed, but I have seen nothing in the press.

Happy digging.

I have to face 2 complaints against me in court tomorrow; still don’t know if the woman who assaulted me has been served. My grandson is going with me.

So, later, Lizards.

Keep calm…

Good luck.

Oh hell no. I love chimps. but they are strong as hell and have all the abilities of a human as far as limb movements, etc. Add in ‘wild’ and good luck.

Hell, I came across a mother raccoon one morning at the corner of the parking lot and the building/warehouse I was working. It was all in a fairly remote farm land, river/park area north of town in a small city.

Anyway, I did not see her at first until I came to the corner and was like 2 foot from her when she reared back and started hissing and bearing those little teeth. Her three little babies tucking up behind her along the wall. I swung out way wide in my walking pace and she booked off with the kids as soon as I passed.

I didn’t want to find out first thing in the morning what a pissed mama raccoon was capable of doing when seemingly threatened. Also, they are capable of carrying rabies. That’s as wild as I want to get!

I’ve read his tweet with an excerpt, and the excerpt is a bit too vague for me to count as a confirmation.

Nice cars. They can’t keep them on the lots around here, and Columbus has three VW dealers. The prices stay firm too on the TDi. No need for dealer to deal, when people are waiting.

When I went shopping for my new daily driver after the Rabbit fell apart, they had just gotten a TDI on the lot. I test-drove it, talked it over with my folks, and then asked the sales lady if they had any gasoline-powered Jettas on the lot. She immediately turned as cold as a January night. I figure she was probably upset after she realized that she wouldn’t be earning the fat commission on the luxury-equipped TDI model.

You should’ve heard her shock when she called back days later and I told her I’d bought a Chevy. She couldn’t seem to comprehend why I wasn’t interested in her “best offer” on a beat-up (obviously hail damaged) old Jetta they had sitting around the lot. It helped that the 2.4 Ecotec in the Malibu is also about as reliable a motor as you’ll find in a domestic.

Just checking to see if these still work. Wheeeeee!

Hmmm, I guess we’re limited to two now? If I try to do a third one it breaks.

I think after that horrible event in Florida(?) where a chimp ripped the face off a woman, they had a primatologist on NPR talking about how chimps made very bad pets. Once they mature, you’re basically dealing with something with strength comparable to an NFL Linebacker, and the impulse control of a 5 year old boy. Not a good combo.

The critters that we (normally) keep in our homes have been selectively bred to maximize the possibilities that they WON’T turn on us and kill us. People don’t realize just how cruel and vicious nature can be, that whole red in tooth and claw isn’t just a literary allusion.
