Why many U.S. biology teachers are ‘wishy-washy’

In 2007, two political scientists surveyed a national sample of high school biology on their teaching of evolution. They found that 13% were openly sympathetic to creationism, while 28% gave their students a solid grounding in evolution science. The rest, which the researchers labeled “the cautious 60%,” spent as little time as possible teaching this most fundamental concept in biology. Now, in a new study of students preparing to become science teachers, the same pair of researchers focuses on where this “wishy-washiness” on teaching evolution comes from. Drawing from focus groups held with 35 teacher-trainees at four universities in the Pennsylvania, they find that future science teachers often lack the knowledge, conviction, and role models needed to teach evolution with confidence. One problem, the researchers say: breaking the “cycle of ignorance,” in which teaching students lack good role models for teaching evolution because they weren’t taught the subject well in high school or college.

Absolutely right. That’s why the Republican Party pushes the voucher idea so hard. The conservative movement benefits from having a dumb, uneducated voter base.

It also comes from serious pressure from above and crazy parents. No one needs or wants that headache. Easier to go along and get along, hope the next level will deal with it.

The CO I work for is in commercial construction. I cannot tell you the number of charter schools we’ve bid. 5 so far this year. All with sketchy names. Actually one today was something like “Church for Kids” Seriously.

I always rant from my desk loud enough that they don’t want the anti religion person doing these bids. That’s all I can do, alas.

9 allegro  Mar 6, 2015 6:02:16pm

My brother was an audio-video engineer who did sound and video for a number of MEGA mega churches, those who drag in hundreds of thousands of dollars a week. He got so that he flat refused to even bid on any church or church related jobs because he got burned every single time. They would demand all kinds of upgrades then refuse to pay for them, threatening him with lawsuits, etc. until they wore him out and all he wanted to do was wash his hands of them. It was a pattern, they all seemed to play from the same book of how to rip off vendors.

Jindal visit to Israel a ‘presidential’ pilgrimage?

[…]

Jindal was invited to tour the Holy Land by the American Renewal Project, a conservative organization founded in 2005 to restore and promote traditional values. Last month, evangelical political activist David Lane, who heads ARP and has been engaged in Republican politics since 1992, paid for 60 members of the Republican National Committee to visit Israel.

“Helping our nation’s political leaders focus on our Judeo/Christian heritage will help strengthen them as they make decisions affecting us,” Lane told Christian Examiner. “The only currency to rebuild America is God’s economy rooted in righteousness.”

[…]

When Jindal travels to Israel in July, he will make some strategic acquaintances, being accompanied by evangelical pastors from Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada — four states which play a critical early role in the Republican primaries.

I suspect that the general collapse of “networks” will have a wide effect on social commentary shows.

With “over the top” models taking over packaged cable and over the air broadcasting, everyone will be able to pick and choose what to watch from menus of the consumer’s choice.

I also believe that the epistemological bubbles will become stronger because of this.

DeLay encourages GOP in Katy to take active role in government

Former congressman and house majority leader Tom DeLay shared his vision for America with the Republican Women’s Club of Katy members last Thursday.

With the fervor of a Southern preacher, DeLay made a passionate case for a spiritual awakening in America.

“I’m running around the country talking about this spiritual revival,” said DeLay. “You can’t look at the history of this country in any way shape or form and not understand that God created this country through our Founding Fathers, because it was their worldview and their education and who they were and their belief in God that was transformed and manifested into the Revolutionary War, the Declaration of Independence and the constitution. That is God creating this country.”

Is it a case of her stories becoming less significant than before (ie leaning toward more fluff pieces), or does there seem to be a case of editorial interference from her higher-ups that are putting a damper on content?

Guys I appreciate you folks stepping up because my week was incredibly stupid busy for no reason at all but here is what I think I learned:

1.) An email address that thousands of people sent emails to was really super secret and on the low down.

2.) Apparently Bibi gave a speech that was really important but once he gave it nobody reported on what he said and the huge story died within 3 hours of the speech.

3.) If you try and dig up dirt on somebody over topic C and the guy gets in trouble for something to do with topic R you can still take credit for busting his ass.

4.) It was really cold and snowy all over this country.

5.) Vicious B has some cute as heck grandkids with great costumes.

6.) Unemployment rate down and more people working is horrible news for some reason.

What else?

Hope y’all are well.

Well, Charles Krauthammer called it “Churchllian” in his weekly “I hate Obama” column today. All I read was the title, so I have no idea what the Fox News hack was ranting about. Probably wants to see a war start between the US and Iran like all of the other GOPers.

The talking points from the RWNJ community on this initially was “Obviously this is a gay person doing this to make us look bad”.

Problem with this is that it’s very very likely that this is the same individual who filled a proposition that the Bible (King James Version) made available to every school student (grades 1-12) so that teachers could teach it as literature. I think this is just being ignored.

I just waded through CCJ’s lengthy self-congratulatory piece about Menendez, where he says nothing about the actual charges the senator faces.

How does that boy get his head into an elevator? I’ve never read something so ego-maniacal yet so totally wrong before in my life.

Interesting tidbits:
(1) he disses a Washington Post reporter for not speaking Spanish (and bragging he does, of course), missing the fact that her co-writer has a Hispanic name or the possibility the Post could have paid for an interpreter.
(2) he says he paid someone to go to the Dominican Republic to get some incriminating doxx from the police department, but as CCJ didn’t have the money to spend, he crowdfunded the money, got more than the $5,000 he needed, and used the extra for “research” and other interesting projects.
(3) he accuses the DR government and police of being corrupt, so we can’t trust anything they told the FBI and the Post, but his operative got the real deal from the DR police.

I’m trying to write a suitable parody, but it’s impossible to recreate his prose without losing my mind. Besides which, my site is down for some reason, so the GotNwes rejoinder will be delayed.

Greetings!

So we’re getting some real turkeys coming into the ski shop.

One guy came in for a tune, I look at his skis, they’re tuned. “What’s wrong with them?” I ask.

“Well, I got onto some ice and I couldn’t hold an edge, I think the edges aren’t sharp enough.”

I feel the edges. Bullshit! You can practically shave with these edges. “These skis feel tuned,” I say.

“They are! I had them tuned in Dallas. I think maybe they did something wrong. I can’t hold an edge in ice at all!”

This is where I really want to go off and tell this gomer that he sucks at skiing and he should take a lesson. I can’t do that, alas. Diplomatically, I took out a true bar and showed him that the bases were flat, the edges were tuned to 1° and I even showed him the fingernail trick, where you rub your fingernail on the edge; if the edge leaves behind a little bit of your nail, they’re sharp, which this dude’s edges were. I told this dude six ways from Sunday that his skis didn’t need to be tuned.

Note: Tuned skis are great, but every time you tune them you shorten the life of the ski by a little bit. Hence why I try not to tune customer’s skis if they don’t need it.

This went on for five minutes. Finally he just admitted it, in a half-assed sort of way. “I think maybe my legs just aren’t strong enough. I’ll take ‘em out tomorrow morning and try harder.”

That was just one guy. There were more than a few other folks with eye-rolling inquiries. It’s fun.

I tune skis. I sharpen the edges and grind the bases with a stonegrinder.

Some ski tuning 101. You can bevel the edges to make them razor sharp. Imagine a ski edge, a 90° strip of metal on the edge of the ski.

I_

Beveling involves shaving the vertical line above down a few degrees.
Like this:

/_

Racers go big, on downhill skis (the ones that go 70+ mph) they angle that vertical line, sometimes up to 8°!

The stonegrind? That’s a whole other post, where I talk about base heights and base structures.

I’m going to guess that a beveled edge has the ability to “cut” into the ice better, the difference between trying to clear your windshield with a CD box (Square) vs an ice scraper (beveled). But I bet a beveled edge wears faster (thinner metal at the point of contact).

It’s been years since I skiied, but… many of us just don’t do ice. Myself, I like a well-manicured packed-powder mogul-y slope, with a lodge at the bottom that has drinks service to in front of the big fireplace. Also jacuzzis. My brother is into the deep powder, he does helicopter skiing. He also knows how to build an igloo when/if he gets lost, how to make air pockets mid-tumble if he gets caught in an avalanche, and how to find “up” after coming to a stop.

Then he goes on about he knew this was all going down in July, but the feds held off going forward till now because of the Iran talks and APAIC and Menendez was no longer useful to the Democrats, blah, blah, blah.

Also, now it seems he has family in the “intelligence services,” so accusations that he was duped by Cuban spies really sting. Poor baby.

Ollanius Persson

Ollanius Pius is a mythic figure to the common people of the Imperium, and in some ways to the Warhammer 40,000 community at large; he is often referred to as the man whose selfless actions aboard the Warmaster’s battle barge ultimately led to Horus’s defeat, without great evidence to back this up, by both the fictional group and the real one. The reasoning for this in-universe is that his story is presented as a legend of a long-ago Saint. Out of universe, it involves previous tellings of the Heresy story (published before the current novel series) that have variously presented a Legiones Astartes Terminator (and then, in a retcon) a member of the Emperor’s Custodian Guard as stepping in between the humbled Emperor and the triumphant Horus, only to be horrifically slain. It is this death that then spurs the Emperor onto finally defeating Horus once and for all. It is commonly interpreted by the fandom that Pius’ believed sacrifice actually took place aboard the Warmaster’s Battle Barge, and that he was another iteration of the Terminator/Custodian character. This interpretation appears to be supported by the latest published material, which places a character called Ollanius Persson into this confrontation, albeit if only in a vision and in a somewhat different manner.

Despite the wording of the source material about Ollanius Pius being a Guardsman (there was no such thing during the Heresy; Imperial human soldiers were members of the Army) who interjected himself between the battling leaders at the Imperial Palace (Horus and the Emperor only fought once, upon the Warmaster’s Battle Barge, not at the Palace), this is not actually much of a problem for in-universe rationalisation - as the idea of Pius being a legend would allow for such inconsistencies with since-forgotten historical fact.

Ollanius Persson is a very ancient being: he makes first-hand reference to historical and mythological events such as the Siege of Verdun (during the First World War), the Battle of Austerlitz (during the Napoleonic Wars) and being one of the Argonauts, amongst others.

Ollanius Persson is said to belong to the wold “Catheric” faith and wears what appears to be a crucifix around his neck. That combined with his age may make him the last remaining Catholic in the galaxy as of M31.

re: #163 William Barnett-Lewis

I don’t trust any cop when it comes to diffusing a situation rather than pulling out a weapon. If he felt in danger, he should have called for back up instead, although it’s unclear from this passage whether other officers were initially with him or not:

“The chief says the officer went to the apartment he thought the man had gone into, where he thought he heard a disturbance and forced entry to the apartment. (my emphasis)

“This same subject then assaulted my officer and in the context of mutual combat, the officer did draw his revolver and subsequently shot the subject,” Koval said

“The first officer and others started CPR. The man was taken to the hospital, but died from his injuries.”

wkow.com

He was allegedly going to the scene of a man walking in traffic, but wound up at the apt where the now dead 19 yr old was with a couple of companions who I assume are the witnesses being held.

166 Justanotherhuman  Mar 7, 2015 4:07:30am

So now, “walking in traffic” warrants a death sentence?

This is totally unacceptable. Being killed for a misdemeanor is becoming increasingly frequent in Black neighborhoods.

167 Justanotherhuman  Mar 7, 2015 4:23:25am

It doesn’t matter whether the cop was Black or white, using a weapon to “resolve” a situation is becoming increasingly more common these days, esp if the “suspect” is Black.

This is what produces a powder keg situation. When some people are treated as lesser, simply because of who they are and where they live, racism and self-protection by the police overcomes common sense and equal regard for human life.

De Blasio knows what he’s talking about when he describes what his kids go through when not at home under their family’s protection. And he was criticized for it from the usual sources.

John Danforth (R-MO) implicitly rejected Missouri Republican Party Chairman John Hancock’s denials about being involved in an anti-Semitic “whisper campaign.” Schweich had told people before his death that Hancock was telling people he was Jewish, when in fact he was Episcopalian.

Schweich, who was a leading Republican gubernatorial candidate, believed that the “whisper campaign” was intended to hurt him among evangelical Christian primary voters. Hancock had previously done consulting work for Schweich’s primary opponent, Catherine Hanaway.

re: #168 Varek Raith

You know damn well that if these were all white kids, the situation would be cleared up in no time—there would be cop convictions, total reform of the police forces, and deference from the “servants” of the law as well as protection from prosecution of those perps because of the cops’ mistakes in even arresting them.

Hell, we’re not even that far from working class whites getting away with lynchings and other persecutions of Black people because the cops were all hired from that pool. And when whites join forces with Blacks to point out these kinds of discrimination, they’re called “race traitors”.

And no, Episcopalian is at least protestant. Being a Jew in MO? Outrage.

172 Nyet  Mar 7, 2015 5:05:02am

In this county, the % of Blacks is only about 5%. I noticed in court that out of 60 or so defendants, only about 4 were Black. This was a misdemeanor court, and almost all of the charges were more than likely a result of having no job, no money, etc. There were quite a few continuances, probably to come up with the money to get an inspection, renew a license, get a tag, etc. Poor people, young people, who couldn’t keep up their auto insurance, get new tags, or even renew their driver’s license because they didn’t have the money to pay a previous fine. Over 90% of those appearing were traffic offenses, w/2 minor pot possessions. I only heard the ADA tell 2 people that their offenses had been lowered to a lesser charge.

The courts get their money from the poor, not those who can afford to keep their lives together, even if they get traffic tickets for speeding and other moving violations. Then, even if you get a court appointed atty, you still have to pay $60 as an “appointment fee” if you’re convicted, along with any fines imposed.

177 Justanotherhuman  Mar 7, 2015 5:44:02am

To be fair, you’re probably more likely to see the poor ones in court because the middle/upper class people will just prepay their tickets online unless it’s something serious (which they can’t prepay).

What I was trying to say is that the poor often can’t even keep up the basics of having transportation in an area without any public transportation. So a car is an absolute necessity, many of them not even able to pass inspection and requiring work to do so. Cars can be expensive to repair and maintain. And when people can’t keep up the basics, they pay far more than someone who can afford to just “pay online”.

I was fairly incredulous at the time: “Seriously? That’s an actual issue?”

Now?

Given the recent suicide of the GOP state auditor; the repulsive “So I might have said the guy was a Jew, what’s the big deal” not-pology of the GOP MO leader; and the fact armed racists run Ferguson?

187 Nyet  Mar 7, 2015 6:16:32am

This article about Jesus’ existence by Lawrence Mykytiuk is a perfect example of why I accept Jesus’ historicity only tentatively, not on the same level as I accept, say, the historicity of Pilate or Tiberius. Indeed, Mykytiuk is a very able scholar, I previously read his books about identification of Biblical persons in archaeological/numismatic data. So we would expect him to present the best evidence for Jesus’ historicity.

Yet he relies on the same stale Tacitus and Josephus references. Tacitus is a very late source and his mention of Christ is very short, saying that he was executed by Pilate. He probably got this bit from the Christians themselves and he would have no discernible reason to doubt something that trivial.

As for Josephus, we know for certain that Testimonium Flavianum was tampered with, which means that its authenticity as a whole is in doubt. There were claims of “more authentic” versions in some Arabic translations, but they were later shown to have been derived from the tampered TF.

Mykytiuk still goes with the “authentic core” hypothesis, relying on the linguistic arguments based on certain expressions, but there are no less able mainstream scholars who say that these same expressions are more characteristic of Eusebius than Josephus (see e.g. an academic article by Ken Olson and an easier to read blog post by the same).

The minor reference to James, brother of Jesus “called the Christ” is also not at all unambiguous, it can be convincingly shown to refer to the high priest Jesus ben Damneus, with “called the Christ” being most probably an accidental interpolation. Mykytiuk only deals with the “outright forgery” hypothesis, which is indeed not convincing, but never with the “accidental interpolation” hypothesis (nor with the reasons of why a mention of our Jesus in this context is highly unlikely, nor with the reasons of why no other authors ever seem to cite this fragment even when it would have been in their interest to do so…).

Yes, all this can be argued about, but in the end we’re still left with two extremely ambiguous pieces of external evidence. And this is the best a good mainstream scholar is able to offer.

I still accept that Jesus is slightly more likely to be historical than non-historical (the “man -> man + myth” hypothesis seems a bit simpler than “myth -> man + myth” in this case). But there can be no certainty about this.

Not quite. Paul’s earliest letters date to the 50s, 20+ years after Jesus’s supposed date of death. But they’re not big on detail. The earliest gospel is “Mark”, it is usually dated to around A.D. 70. “Matthew” and “Luke” come later and plag borrow heavily from “Mark”. “John” is usually considered not to contain much historical detail at all (one of the big reasons: Jesus’ supposed speeches are long and detailed, not something that could be derived from an authentic oral tradition). All four gospels are anonymous, despite the names attached to them later. None are by actual eyewitnesses.

So basically, if we are to search for the “historical” Jesus, we should use Paul and “Mark” first and foremost. And these sources are, of course, not unproblematic.

Even his friends in the party did him no favors. “The best thing would be if we shoot you so you can be buried as pure Hungarian,” one told him. Another suggested that he deliver a public apology. “And then,” Szegedi said, “I thought, wait a minute, I am supposed to apologize for the fact that my family was killed at Auschwitz?”

But I live in Denmark, where we get some lovely long, bright evenings from borrowing that hour from the mornings where the sun still rises very early - around 4 am at midsummer. I do believe that we save some electricity as well. But those long summer evenings, sipping white wine or downing a homebrewed beer on the terasse as the sun sets around 10 pm are just the best!

His type will always find ways to make money grifting the public for an alleged “run” for office or some campaign, and the FEC is allowing these idiots to get away with it, the PACs paying for their travel, lodging, clothing, and other items which keep them up while they skim money for years. Better to spend your money on their wardrobe and maintenance, first class airline and hotel services, etc than their own.

Example: See Sarah Palin. As long as she contributes a few thousand dollars to actual people running for office, she’s allowed to collect millions to spend on herself and her bullshit pretense of caring about anyone but herself and lining her own pockets. Same with those PACs which pretend to “educate” people politically, while disseminating nothing but sleazy propaganda.

The Rs sure have this grift down pat.

U.S. Companies Are Stashing $2.1 Trillion Overseas to Avoid Taxes

Eight of the biggest U.S. technology companies added a combined $69 billion to their stockpiled offshore profits over the past year, even as some corporations in other industries felt pressure to bring cash back home.

Microsoft Corp., Apple Inc., Google Inc. and five other tech firms now account for more than a fifth of the $2.10 trillion in profits that U.S. companies are holding overseas, according to a Bloomberg News review of the securities filings of 304 corporations. The total amount held outside the U.S. by the companies was up 8 percent from the previous year, though 58 companies reported smaller stockpiles.

The money pileup, reflecting companies’ incentives to park profits in low-tax countries, has drawn the attention of President Barack Obama and U.S. lawmakers, who see a chance to tap the funds for spending programs and to revamp the tax code. That effort is stalled in Washington, and there are few signs that tech companies will bring the profits back to the U.S. until Congress gives them an incentive or a mandate.

Absolutely right. That’s why the Republican Party pushes the voucher idea so hard. The conservative movement benefits from having a dumb, uneducated voter base.

If school voucher proponents wanted an uneducated public, then we wouldn’t have a problem with public schools being run for the convenience of their teacher’s union.

Vouchers are a response to the failures of public schools in many places, not an attempt to induce failure.

Well that didn’t take long—giving upchuck a head start in smearing the victim—

Madison Police Chief Mike Koval told reporters that an officer responded to a disturbance at around 6:30 p.m. local time and later forced his way into an apartment that the 19-year-old, who was also suspected of a recent battery, had gone into.

And an “excellent” way to say the victim was unarmed:

“The initial finding at the scene did not reflect a gun or anything of that nature that would have been used by the subject,” Koval said.

The 2 charter schools in this county (run by the same people) have a “board” which they boast creates parental involvement, but it’s stripped of any real responsibility and it’s basically a rubber stamp for the admin. Plus, if parents don’t get involved in the school, their kids pay for it.

“Required volunteer hours for parents - ensuring parental involvement”

Surprisingly, they use Common Core, but this is just a school for the more elite, white population here that doesn’t cost what a private school would.

Why we need the specifics of how the forcing into the apartment happened. If my door were just “broken into” I’d try to get the jump on that individual as quick as I could. We need a legit timeline, that if a body cam w/sound existed (and turned on), would tell us who is right and who is wrong.

The ideas of Busing lead to the discussion or redistricting. Ideas about this are related to the charter school/voucher issue. We don’t have charters in Lexington KY, but as the school board is working on drawing up new districts this year, there is a push to get them. (State Legislature is split on allowing them). I would never accept or support either in the county. One of the leaders of the redistricting committee came out stating that the main goals of redistricting included attempts to balance the socio-economic levels of the schools more than they are now, but not in an unfair way. The other main goal is school balance of population, and limiting overcrowding. He said that (for the High schools) getting all to between 105% and 120% capacity is key. And that is counting the new HS being built set to open in 2017. Any charter school that exists, does so at the detriment of all other public schools in the district.

It gets tricky. It could very well be that these are indeed the guys.
What if they were ordered to do it by, say, Kadyrov or one of his cronies? It has happened before, see the assassinations of and attempts on the Yamadayev brothers. Obviously in such a case the default assumption is that this will be covered up (like it was covered up back then). Unless certain circles grew weary of Kadyrov’s antics…
Then again, the guys apparently being Chechens (or Ingushs; this is basically the same ethnos - Vainakhs) gives a chance to blame the “Wahhabis” (e.g. in connection to Nemtsov’s stance on Charlie Hebdo).

In our situation, some families pulled their kids from the public schools and put them in my school.

It had nothing to do with the quality of the education in public schools. IT had everything to do with “OMG! Our children CANNOT go to school with Black Kids”

Waukesha wouldn’t even exist except as some farming community if it wasn’t for the nasty, racist, white flight from Milwaukee.

I get asked why I choose to live in Milwaukee when I could easily move to some bedroom community close-by ? I know who these people are, that’s why. I don’t want to associate with their rampant racist filth. As bad as it is in the city proper, you could power the entire country with racist hatred in the surrounding suburbs.

New: Dadayev served in the battalion “Sever” (“North”), created by Kadyrov.

It is apparently he who was awarded a medal by Putin in 2010:

Mandatory bussing. With tons of respect for what they were trying to do, I could never get over problems it presented. One was i resented the inability of the system to bring the schools in black neighborhoods up to par with the schools in the same system (LAUSD) in the valley. Then disenfranchising parents that saved maybe shifted jobs away from parents and moved to a certain place for the local schools. And using the kids as a social integration tools always rubbed me the wrong way.

It should, however, be confirmed.

And I’ve gone after Barton many times. Same as a liberal friend of mine has gone after Howard Zinn for his lies. Honest people can be political, too.

Your Barton/Zinn equivalency is absurd. Zinn was just a dyed in the wool liberal, who championed the powerless. You may disagree with him wholeheartedly, but he was a real historian.

Barton is a religious zealot who believes God created the US as an explicitly Christian nation. Barton is closer to an evangelical preacher than a historian (witness his latest comments that God sent AIDS as punishment for human sins; those aren’t the words of a historian, but a vengeful clergyman). And, for the most part, he champions those already in power and the institutions that keep them there. As a historian, he’s a fraud.
