Saturday Night Acoustic Excellence: Punch Brothers, “I Blew It Off”

An American share of 21st century stress
Music • Views: 46,539

YouTube

The sun hits the back of my neck
Through a crack in the window shade
I blow it off
I blow it off
‘cause I keep outside
In the eyes and ears
Of friends I’ve never met
I blow it off
I blow it off

There’s nothin’ to say
That couldn’t just as well be sent
I’ve got an American share
Of 21st century stress

Your trouble vibrates the table
Interrupts my reverie
I blow it off
I blow it off
‘cause if it’s that bad
It ain’t gettin’ better
Face to face with me
So I blow it off
I blow it off

There’s nothin’ to say
That couldn’t just as well be sent
I’ve got an American share
Of 21st century stress

Go ahead and bloody up your knuckles
Knockin’ at my door
I’ll blow ‘em off
I’ll blow em off

‘Cause there’s nothin’ to say
That couldn’t just as well be sent
We’ve all got an American share
Of 21st century stress

See the oceans rise and leave the nations
Cryin’ at heaven’s door
I blew it off
I blew it off

So, UpChuck posts a story on his blog asking about Clinton’s IT guy, because an IT “expert” suggested that the email server is probably an Exchange server, which requires all kinds of maintenance and backups and stuff, so Clinton’s IT guy must be a MSCE living in Chappaqua.

True fact: I maintained an Exchange server for several years. I’m not a MSCE. Also, too. It could have been a Linux box.

Finally got to see John Lewis’ speech introducing Barack Obama at Selma today. Couldn’t help but be emotional and feel the weight and importance of the moment.

Epic introduction and speech, really a great moment that should resonate for some time.

Hey all!

Charles, hope you feel better. A couple of my co-workers have come down with a nasty cold as well.

And now Spring Break is in full force, haven’t seen that many people in the ski shop since Christmas.

No, I’m Clinton’s IT guy. I’m not MCSE, more like WTFITS and OFFS.

We had our skiers a couple weeks ago (Birkiebiner) and this week was the fat tire bike race over the same course. The bikes make more sense to me but then the last time I was on ski’s was for Uncle Sam ~30 years ago and I blew out my knee…

Clothes are tumbling around in the dryer, the gatos are fed and watered, I think I’m going to go read for a while and then call it a night. Going to go help out with the Wounded Warrior program again tomorrow.

Have a good evening, and don’t forget to set your clocks ahead.

Coming across various news and blog posts here and there, I keep asking myself if the intellectual elite, the somebodies in the inner circles back there in the mover and shaker scene in DC-Boston axis, have painted themselves in a corner.

There is now so much concern about trying to include different point of views on any single issue that the result is a modern media that is turning in a cacophony of loons, all calling for their intellectual mates.

What got me going down this path tonight is the NPR story:

Debate: Do Liberals Stifle Intellectual Diversity On The College Campus?

[…]

In the latest event from Intelligence Squared U.S., two teams faced off on in an Oxford-style debate on the motion, “Liberals Are Stifling Intellectual Diversity On Campus.” In these events, the team that sways the most people by the end of the debate is declared the winner.

Before the debate at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., 33 percent of the audience voted in favor of the motion, 21 percent were opposed and 46 percent were undecided. After the debate, 59 percent agreed with the motion, while 32 percent disagreed, making the team arguing in favor of the motion the winner.

There’s so much wrong here, but among the side effects is that the religious right is trying to harvest fruit from this folly. Note that Denny Burk, who is Mullah Mohler’s blogging point man, pounces on this:

Do Liberals Stifle Intellectual Diversity on Campus?

The problem I see is that the post-modernist academics in what used to be called “liberal arts” or “the humanities” are diverging from the greater thrust that the science (and the art) communities have kept from modernity.

More than ever a great deal of what I see published out of academia strikes me as sophistry or rhetorical exercises rather than tangible additions to the collective pool of human knowledge.

Now, let’s cue this one up to see how these memes get played out in American politics:

Cruz hits liberals on global warming, GMO food labeling

Sen. Ted Cruz accused liberals of “anti-science zealotry” on global warming, genetically modified food labeling and biotechnology in Iowa on Saturday.

“The radical left loves attacking people as anti-science when anyone dares question their computer models on global warming,” Cruz told about a thousand activists during an agriculture summit on the state fairgrounds. “They scream, ‘you’re anti-science,’ when someone points out, for example, that in the last 17 years, satellite data shows there’s been no warming whatsoever.”

[…]

“The hard-core left loves ridiculing Christians who believe scripture that says God created the heaven and the earth,” Cruz went on. “They say that it’s anti-science to believe that an almighty God would do such a thing. But when it comes to biotech, suddenly these same voices become the most anti-science zealots we’ve ever seen.”

[…]

Well, golly, imagine ridiculing creationism! Oh the horrors!

Imagine “stifling” creationism on a college campus - oh, the horror! Let’s debate it!!

24 BeachDem  Mar 7, 2015 8:53:06pm

Just finished re-watching “Freedom Riders” and “Freedom Summer” and am sad, inspired, angry, depressed and hopeful (not necessarily in that order.)

Hadn’t watched “Freedom Riders” in awhile, and some of what happened was horrifying. Knowing that John Lewis was part of that horror in 1961, it makes his participation in the Selma march in 1965 even more impressive. He had already been through being beaten and arrested with Freedom Riders (hell, they put them in Parchman for part of their punishment) and still had the courage and conviction to keep on going. It must really sadden him to see some of those same fights having to be fought all over again.

The kids (and most of them WERE kids) and the Mississippi residents who took part in “Freedom Summer” of 1964 were a truly awe-inspiring group. And, although it’s overused, the term “awe” applies to them. Some of the things they went through in Mississippi were frightening, but even after the murder of Goodman and Schwerner and Chaney, they stayed on and kept at it. (Shwerner’s wife was also one of the Freedom Summer crew, and she was quite amazing. Stood strong, even calling out Lyndon Johnson at the White House—he called her a communist!!)

I was a little bit too young to be part of it, and I wonder if I would have even had the courage and stamina to do it had I been a few years older. They all really played a part in changing our country for the better. Yet, today’s Republicans and the right-wing Supremes want to take it all away.

Last week, at our issues conference, some college kids got up and said that we older folks just didn’t understand what they were facing, and could not relate to their problems. They were the same age as the Freedom Riders and the Freedom Summer volunteers, and I’m not sure I can even imagine them doing what those 60s kids did.

I know I should just adjust the onion on my belt and tell everyone to get off my lawn, but DAMN.

I am discovering the birther obsession with minute details that all PROVE that Obama is not American. Now it’s debating whether Obama Sr. really came over from Kenya on the Kennedy airlifts. Apparently, if he didn’t, then Obama can’t be president.

I wish these RWNJs would have been as obsessed over every word Bush had said.

It seems Obama Jr. took some poetic license with chronology, and said his father benefited from the Kennedy-sponsored airlifts. In fact, Obama Sr. was already in Hawaii by the time Sen. Kennedy helped fund the airlifts. UpChuck seems fixated on this discrepancy.

Earlier, he tweeted a video, saying Obama credited the Selma march with bringing his folks together. Then I pointed out Obama said nothing of the kind, but credited Kennedy with bringing them together. Then UpChuck tweeted again, saying it didn’t happen.

But in fact, Obama Sr. did benefit from the airlifts, but not while Kennedy was helping fund them. washingtonpost.com

Debating whether or not to write a follow-up to Kragar’s post about the Harris case, because it’s looking like the rabbit hole has only gotten deeper. He’s already changing his story to make himself out totally as the victim, but now he’s saying DHS is responsible. And the Arkansas Times has dug deeper and found the foster family who cared for the girls before the Harrises took custody of them and are disputing his claims.

Kid-Dumper AR Rep Justin Harris So SO Sorry … That DHS Screwed Him And His Family

Foster family disputes key statements from Justin Harris

Yeah, that’s what I was considering writing up a page about. The stink of this whole case is just getting worse and worse. I get the strong impression that the adoption of the girls was a political stunt by Harris, that he got into something for which he had little understanding and a lot of false confidence, and he passed the girls off like unwanted puppies without any idea who the people he was giving them to really were. And now he’s trying to cover his tracks by acting in that grand Republican tradition: Blaming everybody else and portraying himself as the victim.

56 Kragar  Mar 8, 2015 1:17:53am

re: #55 Targetpractice

DCFS Director Cecile Blucker is the person ultimately in charge of adoption and foster care for the state of Arkansas. Harris said Blucker is the one who informed him of the possibility of an abandonment charge when he and Marsha were struggling to handle the girls. In the interview with Petrimoux, he said “I did go to her and … we were told we could get the charge of abandonment … I talked privately, constantly, being on the [House] committee of Children and Youth, with Cecile Blucker.”

But the Harts believe Blucker’s influence made the adoption happen in the first place. They say she exerted pressure on people in the local DHS team that had previously objected to the Harris adoption.

“In most conversations with us, [Harris] would mention Cecile’s name. ‘Well, Cecile said this, Cecile said that.’ They were impatient for papers to be filed and did not want to wait for anything. They wanted it to happen faster than it did,” Cheryl Hart said.

The Times asked the former DHS employee whether the wishes of the local adoption team were not followed because of Blucker. The former employee responded, simply, “True.”

The Southern Good Ole Boy network hooked up one of their own and it led to a 6 year old getting raped.

And is now closing ranks around him. A reporter’s been threatened, the legislature is now looking to “reform” DHS, and the governor is calling for an investigation into DHS. The apparent assumption is that, whatever went wrong in this case, Justin Harris is totally the victim. Even in the excuse-making session on Friday, he didn’t seem to show any remorse for what his actions had wrought.

The whole case really is a major example of how fucked up things are in the GOP. But IOKIYAR, so he actually stands to profit by using the episode to attack his political enemies.

As noted in both articles, it’s his use of government funds for those schools that’s resulted in his little feud with DHS, which (of course) he has oversight over. And it’s that oversight that apparently he used to strong-arm DHS into allowing the adoption to go through. So of course it’s going to be that oversight he’ll now use to screw them over for his political benefit.

Speaking of fantasy games, I am really quite impressed with D&D 5. Cleans up after the steaming pile that was the 4th edition quite well. The new DMG is easily the best yet and the rules were actually streamlined in useful ways. That said there are still classic D&D WTF moments with dragonborn , teiflings & alignment still being in the game.

NCIS had good character interplay, despite the silliness of the plot resolutions. I turn off my logic functions.

4th Ed was such a steaming load, I’m hesitant to even consider new D&D. I’ll stick with 2nd

Crowdfunding psychedelics: LSD brain-imaging study seeks funds

reuters.com

(snip)

“Nutt and other researchers have previously conducted studies with psilocybin, the psychedelic ingredient in magic mushrooms, and found it suppresses activity in certain “hub” areas of the brain that normally play a constraining role.

“This latest study involves giving 20 volunteers a small dose of LSD and using the latest imaging technology to capture its effect on the brain. Nutt’s team said they expected to find that LSD’s effects were similar to those of psilocybin, but more profound and longer-lasting.

“The LSD study has been funded so far with 100,000 pounds from the Beckley Foundation, a UK-based think tank dedicated to researching potential medical benefits of psychoactive substances.” More

Good morning Lizards from a sunny and currently cool St George, SC.

Got into Wilmington, NC yesterday afternoon and we started driving south. Stopped for dinner at a fish place in Florence, SC.* and then stopped here in St George for the night. Plan this morning once my niece is up and about is to head into Savannah, visit the old town, and then play things by ear** from there. It looks like we’ll have nice weather today and tomorrow, and then rain after that for most of the week.

* - Since there was a shad special and it was the right time of year, I had shad. Lots of little bones, but quite tasty.

** - Which means we might stay in the Savannah area an extra day, or head down towards Pensacola. This is a vacation and we don’t have a fixed agenda.

To repeat some comments I posted yesterday (with some corrections):

Dadayev’s mother says he had service awards from Nurgaliyev and Kadyrov.

ntv. ru/novosti/1355377

This sort of corresponds to that 2010 news item at chechnya.gov.ru

There a certain Zaur Dadayev was awarded the Order of Courage acc. to the order of the President of the RF [it was Medvedev at the time] (among other soldiers). The award was presented by Nurgaliyev, Kadyrov was present and also presented medals to other soldiers.

According to at least 2 sources (1 official + his mother) Dadayev is a deputy commander of the battalion “Sever”, which was created by Ramzan Kadyrov and is loyal to him. The commander of “Sever” is Alibek Delimkhanov.

Alibek is a brother of the Duma deputy Adam Delimkhanov, Kadyrov’s alleged cousin and close ally. Some sources call Delimkhanov Kadyrov’s personal executioner.

In 2009 Dubai accused Adam Delimkhanov of ordering the assassination of Sulim Yamadayev, one of Kadyrov’s personal enemies. (Kadyrov was also responsible for the assassination attempt on Sulim’s brother Isa Yamadayev; this was subsequently covered up by the Russian authorities, but there are still official transcripts and video of the killer’s interrogation in which he points to Kadyrov as the one who had ordered the murder, with Delimkhanov being present during the discussion.)

—-

Umar S. Israilov (c. 1982 - January 13, 2009) was a former bodyguard of Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov who became a critic of the Chechen regime. He was shot and killed in exile in Vienna, Austria on January 13, 2009.[1]

Israilov fought against Russian forces during the Second Chechen War, but was captured in 2003. He began serving as Ramzan Kadyrov’s bodyguard in a militia that was led by Ramzan Kadyrov’s father, then Chechen President Akhmad Kadyrov.[2] Israilov claimed to have witnessed killings, torture, and other crimes by Kadyrovites including Ramzan Kadyrov and Adam Delimkhanov, who went on to serve in the Russian Parliament.[3]

“To a certain extent, the rally shows how adept — at least so far — Mr. Putin has been at mixing religion and politics. It is well known that he relies heavily on the Russian Orthodox Church to bolster his support whenever he needs to draw public attention away from his country’s troubling economic and social ills. But Russia also has a large Muslim population — nearly one-sixth of its people are Muslim. Moscow alone has two million Muslim residents, and according to some estimates, an equal number of Muslim migrant workers. Mr. Putin wants to keep them in his camp, and this requires pragmatism and the utmost delicacy. The brutal war in Chechnya may have ended, but Islamist rebels, some of them professing loyalty to the Islamic State, still roam the Caucasus, and Moscow is fearful that their influence can easily spread northward.”

I haven’t read the NYT article. Does it mention anything about how Putin is using the West (USA and EU, especially) as a scapegoat or a rallying point for Russians of all stripes to dislike/distrust? His rhetoric also seems to paint Russia as a “victim” of Western machinations, an Us vs. Them scenario.

Or, more briefly, “We have always been at war with EastAsia.”

157 Justanotherhuman  Mar 8, 2015 7:40:47am

re: #153 wheat-dogghazi-bola-trality

Not really. But it does give you a scenario in which his appointee, Kadyrov, has gotten away from Putin orthodoxy, even to turning certain institutions into examples of “Sharia law” and this is the fine line Putin is treading.

“But the price of peace and order has been the emergence of an Islamic state within Russia. Chechnya’s nominally secular institutions are now thoroughly Islamicized. Public schools have instructors who teach Islam. Each district administration has a qadi, or Islamic judge, who wields de facto power in the district. Shariah courts function in the guise of state courts. Women are ordered to keep covered in public places, and the consumption of alcohol is prohibited. During his “virtue campaign,” Mr. Kadyrov openly declared that a woman is a man’s property and defended “honor killings.”

(snip)

“Mr. Kadyrov, a member of the council of Russia’s ruling United Russia party and a decorated Hero of the Russian Federation, admitted several years ago that, for him, Shariah was above any other law. For the moment, President Putin seems to find Shariah more palatable than freedom of speech.”

Government plans sex consent lessons for 11-year-olds

bbc.com

I cannot imagine what pressures 11 yr olds are under these days. I was still playing w/paper dolls at that age. Sex was something involving adults or older teenagers about to get married, not me. Does that make me an old fuddy duddy?

I think a program like this should be implemented in US schools—kids need to learn that they’re not “sex toys” for anyone when they’re still kids and not able to give consent, because I don’t think 11 yr olds are having sex with anyone their own age. To think otherwise is to encourage pedophilia and robbing a young child of her/his efforts at growing up to be a well-balanced adult at a time when they’re just beginning to understand themselves as sexual human beings and what that means for the future.

I mentioned this a couple of days ago, but this bears repeating in the current context.

Chechen Leader Threatens Radio Echo of Moscow After Poll Shows Support For Charlie Hebdo

The fallout from the murderous rampage against Charlie Hebdo spilled over the North Caucuses and Moscow on Friday. The leader of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, threatened Radio Echo of Moscow after it ran a poll, asking its listeners whether media, in reaction to Wednesday’s murders of the Charlie Hebdo journalists, should publish cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad. A majority of Echo’s listeners, 68 percent, said “yes,” the cartoons should be published and 30 percent said “no.”

Less than an hour later, Kadyrov posted on Twitter that that Echo’s editor-in-chief, Aleksei Venediktov, had insulted Muslims and said, “There are those who will bring Venediktov to account.

“Venediktov has long ago converted Echo of Moscow into the main anti-Islamic horn,” Kadyrov wrote next to his own portrait, which shows him pointing at the sky, muscles bulging, and rings on his fingers. If authorities did not restrict the radio that “incites animosity and hatred among people and nations,” Kadyrov went on, “There will be people to make Venediktov responsible.” A dangerous statement in the country where a number of journalists, including Anna Politkovskaya and Natalya Estemirova, have been assassinated by Chechen nationals.

[…]

But clearly, balanced and professional were not the approach the Chechen leader had been using lately. Kadyrov began his Friday morning by tweeting a picture of himself in a black uniform speaking before a group of Muslims. In the caption, Kadyrov declared the former boss of Yukos Oil Company [Mikhail Khodorkovsky] his “personal enemy” and “enemy of all Muslims” for calling on media to publish cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad. Kadyrov said that in Europe, where Khodorkovsky currently lives, there would be people able to call the oilman to account.

So while it is sheer speculation, I think you might agree that it’s not entirely unfounded.

I would have said it was good of him to put down the rancor for a day and act like a real human being.

You probably did not see my comments from yesterday, but I said it was good that “W” Bush showed up and I complimented him for it even though I was never a fan of his,

I also said the Republican party can’t even do ‘politics’ properly anymore. You know, the old stuff like showing up at events, shaking hands, meeting people, kissing babies, etc.

Maybe you have gotten so used to the crap the GOP pulls you can’t see that we all don’t think like that. The fact that you have to think we would all have jumped on Cruz for doing what he probably should have done shows how far politics in general has slipped.

Dark, do you realize how many here have said they were conservative Republicans and they have slid to the middle or to the left due to crap like the Republicans not being able to get past the politics and show up at a historic event.

Why would you think everyone would respond in the same way? That is kinda sad. There are days when we are all just Americans. Yesterday was one of those days. Too bad the GOP had their heads up their asses. It will continue to cost them.

What would happen if some decent religious leaders got together and said they had prayed to God for inspiration and answers and He told them Climate Change is all His doing as a way for the earth to adjust to the issues and that man, just like the dinosaur, is subject to be eliminated because that is God’s plan?

They could say God had told them that is why there were the great floods and only people that listened to nature (Noah!) were able to be spared.

I figure the Kochs and others like them would immediately claim these religious people didn’t know anything and to follow them would be foolish.

[Embedded content]

I read a newspaper report a few months ago that said that that Spanish church whose parishioner’s self-motivated - if insufficiently self-taught - restoration project resulted in Simian Jesus there has seen a dramatic uptick in visitors (and donations). Apparently, once word got out about that hideous picture, people from all over started flocking to the church, mainly (they guess) to see for themselves just how bad it really is. And have been weighing down the collection plate in appreciation for the experience.

There’s a lesson here somewhere, but I’ll happily admit it’s above my pay-grade to figure out….

Completely off-topic, but my girlfriend’s niece took her out for a (belated) birthday lunch yesterday and gave her a card that has Sheldon Cooper staring at you: “It’s your birthday. I am freezing time so it lasts forever.” Inside: “Happy permanent birthday!”

re: #255 allegro

I thought I remembered that as well, that it seemed backwards but wanted to ask here to make sure. I need a heavier weight florist wire and didn’t want to order a wrong thing.

My first encounter with wire gauges was needing wire for a small paperclay armature. When I started buying colored “art” wire it became even more important. Even if the explanation was wrong, it sure is a good way to remember.

Random bit of trivia: Most standard paperclips are about 20 gauge, which makes a good reference point that pretty much everyone is familiar with.

262 A Cranky One  Mar 8, 2015 11:20:53am

re: #255 allegro

Wire was historically made by drawing it though a die to make it smaller. Originally, the number indicated the number of times it had been drawn through the die to reduce the diameter.

So, 10 gauge was drawn 10 times. Drawing it through a die 2 more times to make it smaller would give you 12 gauge. Draw it through the die another 10 times to get 22 gauge (a thin fine wire).

So what’s “dwt”?

270 Nyet  Mar 8, 2015 11:27:15am

OK, yesterday I complained about wingnuts mixing up two Tony Robinsons.

Now The Smoking Gun reports that they’re the same guy after all:

thesmokinggun.com

And this seems to confirm it:

host.madison.com

Doris King said she asked Robinson about his involvement because, she said, it was so out of character.

“He felt he was under a lot of pressure from the others to do what he did,” she said. “He told me he would never do anything like that again.”

I admit my mistakes when I’m wrong.
But the photo of the 18 y.o. Robinson still looks nothing like the recent photos. Though I guess at that age 1 year makes a difference.

278 jaunte  Mar 8, 2015 11:38:58am

re: #273 CuriousLurker

The dwt abbreviation came from dirhem:

“…Circulating within the Arabic domain was a silver Dirhem of 45 full grown barley grains, which was a quarter of a Persian Khorine or a third of a Greek Attic Stater. Ten Dirhems made a Wukryeh of 450 grains which we call an ounce from the Latin “uncia” or twelfth, which name is used genetically for such a class of weight or volume.

This unit of weight, and value, was widely used in the Mediterranean area, and entered Europe mainly through land routes to become key measures of weight and money.”
