Chuck C. Johnson and His Neo-Nazi Friends

Spreading noxious hatred and racism on Twitter
Wingnuts • Views: 54,165
Chuck C. Johnson posing with his best friend

By now many people realize that right wing blogger Chuck C. Johnson (who is NOT ME) is one of the worst people on the Internet, but just to really drive this point home, let’s take a look at how often Chuck uses Twitter to spread the hate speech of white supremacists and neo-Nazis, shall we?

One of the disgusting things for which Chuck is justly infamous was his outing of Ebola patient Nina Pham; he published her name and full address on Twitter and was (briefly) suspended for it. But Chuck also retweeted a white supremacist who called for Nina Pham’s dog to be put down.

Here’s Chuck’s excuse for retweeting white supremacists — he says it would be “racist” not to:

When the news broke that Rep. Steve Scalise had spoken to a white supremacist organization, Chuck immediately mounted a full-throated defense of Scalise — and of the white supremacists as well.

Chuck even directly quoted a white supremacist screed written by a segregationist:

Chuck has an affinity for Nazi theories of eugenics:

And over and over, Chuck retweets the vile racist comments of overt neo-Nazis and white supremacists:

This is just a small sampling; there are lots more where these came from. Chuck also frequently links to white nationalist and supremacist websites, and has expressed his admiration many times for the “scientific racism” of the discredited book The Bell Curve.

So the next time someone treats Chuck as just a harmless crank, remember: he’s actually spreading and promoting the most noxious kinds of racism and hate speech.

Race realists delude themselves by believing science has in any way validated their ignorant biases.

Formerly unheard of expressions of racism are commonplace, legitimate discourse on the right these days.

We’re headed for an ugly showdown in this country.

Obviously, a poltroon like ChuckC is not, in and of himself, evidence of this. An individual lunatic might do or say almost anything. The evidence lies in his ever increasing prominence on the right.

This shit is why I get so aggro with my relatives when they start up with their ignorant “White people need a pride movement, too!” whining. It’s such a small fucking step from that to the racist scum in the CCJ retweets.

9 Mattand  Mar 8, 2015 1:52:42pm

And to repeat myself: it must absolutely suck to have to battle for internet recognition with someone who shares your name, and is purposely trying to be as vile as possible.

Being silent and hoping they go away is just not an option. Hang in there, Charles.

It’s ironic that the “white pride” and “European-American heritage” types are often completely ignorant of actual European history and culture. In particular, they seem not to have a clue why, and how, modern Europe so completely rejected the feudalism, mercantilism, and theocracy that are such prominent components of the right wing mythos, particularly in the “lost cause” fantasies of the neo-confederates.

Most telling is that Chuck continues to follow @TheLinderFiles (yes, I confirmed again.) Every single time that @TheLinderFiles account has mentioned @ChuckCJohnson it’s been to say some crazy, hateful, antisemitic bullshit.

This gives lie to the idea that Chuck gives a shit about or even likes Jewish people. He claims to have blocked tens of thousands of accounts on Twitter, but the truth is that the only thing he dislikes is people who are critical of him. One can malign Jews as much as possible and he’ll continue to follow that person.

Chuck has managed to alienate all of his previous allies, I wonder what he will do to piss off the white supremacists?

18 Backwoods_Sleuth  Mar 8, 2015 2:31:59pm

I’m amused that Chuck tweets a lot about how SAT and other scores are worthless, but he continues to brag how high his scores are.

19 goddamnedfrank  Mar 8, 2015 2:32:21pm

Deep down Chuck loves this shit. That’s why he continues to follow assholes like this. Chuck would love nothing more than to try to disprove the Holocaust. Unfortunately he and people like Cruz need to pretend they actually care about and like Jews, for reasons of politics and Christian Dispensationalism.

22 Nyet  Mar 8, 2015 2:51:36pm

Of course, if Putin had a modicum of common sense, he would use this as an opportinity to get rid of Ramzan. He can’t not understand that the current situation under Ramzan is a time bomb, that will inevitably explode in the future.

The “real” scandal, according to Ron, is that the emails Hillary holds might include evidence of “pay to play” with the Clinton Foundation, that donors (particularly foreign ones) were using donations to the charity while she was at State to influence US foreign policy.

Really, it’s Whitewater all over again, with “follow the money” being a hollow mantra as they try to turn a missing document or an ambiguous statement into proof of a grand conspiracy being masterminded by the Clintons.

UpChuck is scum. He wants attention and will do anything to get it. The problem is he keeps having to go further and further out there to outdo himself. He seems to believe that trolling will bring him fame & riches. He’s right about the fame part, but it’s more like infamy.

I seriously doubt everyone who’s following him is a fan. Still, there are plenty of other scumbag haters & trolls out there who are willing to crawl behind him on all fours every day, lapping up his verbal diarrhea 24/7.

He’s young and exceedingly stupid (or maybe just exceedingly lazy & selfish). The internet is forever—some day, more likely than not, he’s going to grow the fuck up and and wish for a respectable future which, by then, will be well beyond his reach thanks to the foul reputation he’s left behind.

He’s ruining his life and the lives of those close to him on whom this can blow back. We’re witnessing a young man who had every advantage—white privilege, a good education, etc.—blindly flushing his future down the drain.

I’m sure the fame he’s pursuing appears to him as a beautiful, desirable young woman right now, but soon enough he’ll find himself in the awful embrace of a diseased, conscienceless old hag… and because of all the people he’s hurting along the way, I’m not going to feel an ounce of pity for him when his turn to suffer comes.

BTW, the reason given by the suspected murderer cannot be the whole story since it’s not true: Nemtsov never insulted Mohammed, not sure he even mentioned him, I don’t think he even reposted any cartoons. I haven’t found any examples in his facebook, lj and twitter. Rather, he simply vocally condemned the murders. However it could be that Dadayev was led to believe in that. By whom? The most obvious answer is on the photo above.

Beate Gordon, Long-Unsung Heroine of Japanese Women’s Rights, Dies at 89

nytimes.com

“Beate Sirota Gordon, the daughter of Russian Jewish parents who at 22 almost single-handedly wrote women’s rights into the Constitution of modern Japan, and then kept silent about it for decades, only to become a feminist heroine there in recent years, died on Sunday at her home in Manhattan. She was 89.”

She was a 22 yr old with no legal training and had returned to Japan from the US to find her parents after the war, securing a job as a translator on McArthur’s staff.

“Japanese women were historically treated like chattel; they were property to be bought and sold on a whim,” Ms. Gordon told The Dallas Morning News in 1999. “Women had no rights whatsoever.”

It was ubiquitous, you can see references to it in the most unexpected places. E.g. some Baby Yar witnesses believed that the Nazis were trying to make human soap there. The rumors were so widespread they reached Himmler and he demanded from his underlings the guarantee that nothing like that actually happens. He ordered all bodies to be cremated or otherwise disposed of very quickly.

Rear Admiral Dr. Grace Murray Hopper was a remarkable woman who grandly rose to the challenges of programming the first computers. During her lifetime as a leader in the field of software development concepts, she contributed to the transition from primitive programming techniques to the use of sophisticated compilers. She believed that “we’ve always done it that way” was not necessarily a good reason to continue to do so.

A remarkable woman indeed. She used to give out pieces of wire, the length of which represented the distance light can travel in one nanosecond, to help people visualize the speed of light.

Early computers used mechanical relays for connections. These opened and closed connections mechanically, like fingers pinching together and separating. While troubleshooting the output, she discovered a moth caught inside a relay, preventing the contacts from closing and making the connection. Hence the terms bug and debugging the computer.

An unsung hero we owe a huge debt of gratitude to. Thanks, Admiral Hopper!

Here she is on the David Letterman show.

Simple test: How do I know if that tree is really there? Try walking into it. You don’t need a God to provide an Absolute Standard Of Truth to tell you, when you do, that it’s there. The busted nose works just fine.

I often wonder about the believers who feel the need to believe that the existence of their god is the only logical conclusion. That seems antithetical to the leap of faith my reading of the NT (for example) requires for salvation.

158 goddamnedfrank  Mar 8, 2015 6:51:59pm

CCJ is a racist with a shitty understanding of science. Gravity is in fact very weak compared to the three other fundamental forces. It’s so weak that some Physicists theorize that most of it may be leaking outside of our Universe to explain just how comparatively weak it is.

We think of gravity as weighty—its omnipresent grasp pulling us down to the ground. Try to lift a piano up a flight of stairs and you can feel gravity’s resistance. (Laurel and Hardy showed this best!) Yet in a match with the other fundamental forces of nature—electromagnetism, the weak force and the strong force—gravity gets pummeled.

You can see gravity’s relative weakness simply by using an ordinary bar magnet to pick up paper clips from a desk. Battling the gravitational pull of all of Earth, the tiny magnet wins! In fact, gravity is a staggering 10**40 times weaker than electromagnetism. But why, among the fundamental forces, is gravity the runt of the litter? Explaining gravity’s relative feebleness is a profound challenge for physics, and an essential milestone on the road to a unified theory of all four forces.

String theorists have proposed an innovative solution to the hierarchy problem: Perhaps gravity is weakened through its ability to travel across an extra dimension. What sounds like science fiction has become an active branch of scientific inquiry called the “braneworld hypothesis.” The braneworld hypothesis suggests that the observable universe lives within a four-dimensional (three dimensions of space and one dimension of time) membrane, or “brane.” Beyond this brane, extended along a fifth dimension, is a region called the “bulk.” Unique among exchange particles, gravitons are free to wander the bulk; everything else is stuck on our brane. So while most particles are like ants confined to the surface of a wooden picnic table (the brane), gravitons are like termites that can bore within (and visit) the bulk. (In the language of string theory, the difference is that gravitons are represented by closed strings; other particles are open strings and have ends that stick to our brane like a curved handle attached to a door.) Because photons cannot enter the bulk, it remains invisible.

Russia’s anti-U.S. sentiment now even worse that it was in the USSR

MOSCOW — Thought the Soviet Union was anti-American? Try today’s Russia.

After a year in which furious rhetoric has been pumped across Russian airwaves, anger toward the United States is at its worst since opinion polls began tracking it. From ordinary street vendors all the way up to the Kremlin, a wave of anti-U.S. bile has swept the country, surpassing any time since the Stalin era, observers say.

The indignation peaked after the assassination of Kremlin critic Boris Nemtsov, as conspiracy theories started to swirl — just a few hours after he was killed — that his death was a CIA plot to discredit Russia. (On Sunday, Russia charged two men from Chechnya, and detained three others, in connection with Nemtsov’s killing.)

There are drives to exchange Western-branded clothing for Russia’s red, blue and white. Efforts to replace Coke with Russian-made soft drinks. Fury over U.S. sanctions. And a passionate, conspiracy-laden fascination with the methods that Washington is supposedly using to foment unrest in Ukraine and Russia.

The anger is a challenge for U.S. policymakers seeking to reach out to a shrinking pool of friendly faces in Russia.

Psychedelic drugs ‘not linked to mental health problems’

A new study from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology has found there is no connection between psychedelic drugs and mental health issues.
The researchers analyzed data from the U.S. National Health Survey (2008-2011). The data includes over 130,000 randomly selected adults, including nearly 20,000 psychedelic drug users. The analysis showed people who use LSD or psilocybin mushrooms do not have an increased risk of mental health problems.

“In general, use of psychedelics does not appear to be particularly dangerous when compared to other activities considered to have acceptable safety,” the study says.

CCJ is a racist with a shitty understanding of science. Gravity is in fact very weak compared to the three other fundamental forces. It’s so weak that some Physicists theorize that most of it may be leaking outside of our Universe to explain just how comparatively weak it is.

I read many multi-verse proponents suggest that gravity is so weak because it is shared between the multiple planes. And some think gravity also has to carry the burden of keeping the planes aligned, or we could have two of the planes crash into each other and cause a huge big bang type explosion. So many known unknowns.

My thought exactly. Richwine:

I’m telling this story not because I want or expect pity for my personal situation. Rather, it’s important for people to understand how hostile the political class can be toward scientific facts that make them uncomfortable. That discomfort is what caused a mainstream policy analyst to be rebranded overnight as a bigoted extremist.

There’s a reason that NYC has as nearly as many Congressional representatives by itself (11) as the states Montana (1) , North Dakota (1), South Dakota (1), Idaho (2), and Alaska (1), and Utah (4), Nebraska (3) - combined.

From the article:

A group of 47 Republican senators has written an open letter to Iran’s leaders warning them that any nuclear deal they sign with President Barack Obama’s administration won’t last after Obama leaves office.

Organized by freshman Senator Tom Cotton and signed by the chamber’s entire party leadership as well as potential 2016 presidential contenders Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz and Rand Paul, the letter is meant not just to discourage the Iranian regime from signing a deal but also to pressure the White House into giving Congress some authority over the process. “…If the administration signs an agreement with Iran, Congress or regional allies can do little to force it to back down. Nor should anyone try. The United States depends on a modicum of international law and smooth relations with key international players to run the global security system that protects us all. Once any administration enters into an international agreement — particularly with important states such as P5+1 partners Britain, China, France, Russia, and Germany — there are compelling arguments to stick with it absent breach of faith.

While Congress must be consulted on any agreement, the administration and the P5+1 states can lift UN sanctions against Iran on their own authority, while the president can invoke the 2012 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) to waive or suspend the most important U.S. sanctions — those penalizing third-country purchases of Iranian oil — on national security grounds.”

Bit o’ Once Upon A Time In America trivia: My good friend and a helluva character Roger Fawcett played the drunk at Moe’s who the kids rolled in a scene that is usually edited out on the rare occasions that the film is shown on tv. The scene took only one day to shoot, but Sergio Leone liked Roger so much he kept him on the payroll and had him hang around the set for the entire shoot in NYC.

Roger was on the front lines of the Stonewall “riots.” I keep telling him he should write a book about the things he’s seen and the people he’s known.

People he went to college with described him as the kind of person who would have been a judge in Stalin’s kangaroo courts.

What Is Chuck Johnson, and Why? The Web’s Worst Journalist, Explained

In College he would harass people through his blog—he seemed to enjoy outing gay people (this was around 2008/Prop 8 and the editor of the campus paper was not out to his parents or something? The exact details were always a bit unclear). He also supposedly would grab pictures and screenshots off of people’s facebooks to blackmail/harass/attack them later in life (like if they wanted to run for office or whatever). He also tried to have a professor fired for “supporting terrorists” (the Professor, who was Palestinian, had supported some boycott of Israel…).

Going to school with him was kind of terrifying—our Government Department had a lot of old Reagan Officials and probably some lingering Nixon cronies who completely enabled his school-yard fascism (that’s how he is so plugged into the Conservative scholarship world). There is no doubt in my mind that at a different time and place he would have gladly been over-seeing Stalinist Show Trials and gleefully ordering executions…I have more stories but his M.O. is harassment and frivolous lawsuits so I am censoring myself a bit on this public comment page

I had given up waiting for it to come back to cable tv (they only played it at 2am which guaranteed I wasn’t getting any sleep that night), I finally order the DVD last week. It will only be the second DVD I own, next to Pink Floyd at Pompeii.

The rape scene in the car is hard to take and for many viewers goes on for far too long. Interestingly, the chauffeur who ends the action is played by the film’s producer, Arnon Milchan, who was opposed to the length of the scene. Oh Sergio, always with the meta! For example, the film’s original title was Once Upon a Time There Was a Certain Kind of Cinema.

The only thing I dislike about that film is that it was the last one Leone made before he died much too young at the age of only 60. Gorgeous indeed. So I saw this tweet and it sent me down the rabbit hole.

Hadn’t heard of Anissimov before, he’s quite the charmer.

Also hadn’t heard of the Neo Reactionary Movement before, but a lot of CCJ’s rhetoric comes directly from that:

The explicitly anti-democratic outlook of neoreactionaries has led to some commentators labelling them as Nazis or fascists. This is misleading. It’s true that racial politics is of interest to neoreactionaries - they often refer to it with the euphemism “human biodiversity” (or “HBD” for short). Nick Land in particular really dislikes the strong social taboo against racism, judging from the rhetorical energy he spends on it. But the neoreactionaries aren’t morbidly obsessed with race. These guys aren’t the SS, or even the Ku Klux Klan. Nor are they fascists in the stricter sense of the word. Neoreactionaries would reject the state-controlled economic model which was central to fascism. On the contrary, many of them seem to have a deep and uncritical love for freemarket capitalism.

Sound familiar?

Here’s a RationalWiki link to the various positions of the Neoreactionary Movement. It’s a hodgepodge of conglomeration of libertarianism, MRA jargon, traditional roles, white angst and the rejection of democracy. They honestly want to go back to a state of monarchy or feudalism, one where only the people they oppose will be put up against the wall.

Racialism.

Alternate names

Very few racialists call themselves “racialist”. Instead, because straight-up racism isn’t hip anymore, the euphemism treadmill rolls at full speed:

Scientific racism: While scientific racists do have to admit their racism, they also get the joy of slapping the “approval” of SCIENCE on it.

Racial realism or race realism: Racial realists get a two-pronged advantage: First, they can deny their racism by — “I’m not a racist, I’m a racial realist!”. Second, they can paint non-racialists as “race deniers” or “racial difference deniers”, which suggests a denial of the obvious facts.

Human biodiversity or HBD:[3] By being just one “bio” away from supporting “diversity” and by failing to mention race, human biodiversity is the most innocuous form of racialism, because it allows one to deny any racism — because it’s recognizing biodiversity, not being racist! Coined by Steve Sailer of VDARE.

What Chuck is saying is of course, total bullshit.

The human gene pool does not divide neatly into geographical groupings

What human genetic groupings actually look like. See how many distinct groups “black” would break down into? Human genetics doesn’t work like race realists think it does. Race realists spend a great deal of time and effort pointing out genetic differences between geographically separated populations in gene clustering research and insisting this is evidence for “races”.

In gene clustering research a set of populations is typically determined via subjective descriptors in ethnicity, language and geographics and people can be reliably identified as members of these groups. However, this way of categorizing people depends fundamentally on the quantity and method used to create the aforementioned framework of ancestral populations; how people are grouped into populations is completely arbitrary. This is completely different from the problem of “races”, which presupposes that there is only one objectively and biologically valid way of dividing all humans into different populations.

The idea of large clusters of people that are principally homogeneous within and heterogeneous in-between in terms of genetic similarity — the latter being necessary to speak of distinct “races” — has no scientific basis and in fact there is evidence against it. Witherspoon et al concluded in their 2007 paper “Genetic Similarities Within and Between Human Populations”:

The fact that, given enough genetic data, individuals can be correctly assigned to their populations of origin is compatible with the observation that most human genetic variation is found within populations, not between them. It is also compatible with our finding that, even when the most distinct populations are considered and hundreds of loci are used, individuals are frequently more similar to members of other populations than to members of their own population.[50]

What that means is that there is statistically FAR more variation between individuals of any one particular “group” than there is between groups in aggregate. The entire race realist and HBD thesis is built on a fundamental misrepresentation of basic science.

Ferguson Sergeant Fired For Racist Email Was Darren Wilson’s Supervisor

So, let’s review. Darren Wilson’s direct superior was Sgt. William Mudd. Mudd thought sending around an email joking about black babies being born black criminals. Hilarious.

My recollection here from the Grand Jury transcripts is that Wilson’s supervisor was directly involved in spiriting him away from the crime scene with his gun, which he took back to the station and put in a paper bag. Anyone want to have a look at those transcripts and see if I’m right?

Is it any wonder that Darren Wilson got off scot-free when his supervisor was doing everything he could to cover for him? There was no real investigation to speak of. The criminalist didn’t have batteries in the camera and couldn’t be bothered to take measurements or pictures, so the only real forensic evidence they had was autopsy evidence, which is incomplete.

This police department should be disbanded sooner rather than later.

ADDENDUM: I can see how CCJ fits into many of those pigeonholes mentioned in the Rationalwiki article. For him, we can also add Islamophobia, given his rhetoric about Christianity defeating Islam.

There were two investigations. The one by the DOJ didn’t merely say they couldn’t find evidence, they also found lots of evidence, both material and testimonial, that either explicitly exculpates Wilson on crucial points or refutes the key claims of “pro-Brown” witnesses.

This means that it’s not a matter of simply finding evidence against Wilson in the future while being in a state of ignorance right now, because if the DOJ report stands, on some crucial points Wilson has indeed been cleared - due to evidence, not lack of it. The only hugely relevant point on which the DOJ didn’t take a stance is whether he acted “with poor judgment in the manner in which he first interacted with Brown, or in pursuing Brown after the incident at the SUV”, while noting that whatever the answer to this, this is not a matter for a criminal prosecution.

Now, the GOP is trying to do an end-run around Iran negotiations with this kind of bullshit:

GOP senators send warning on Iran deal

thehill.com

(snip)

“It has come to our attention while observing your nuclear negotiations with our government that you may not fully understand our constitutional system,” the senators wrote in the letter, which was first reported by Bloomberg. “Thus, we are writing to bring to your attention two features of our Constitution — the power to make binding international agreements and the different character of federal offices — which you should seriously consider as negotiations progress.”

“Anything not approved by Congress is a mere executive agreement,” they said.

“The letter was spearheaded by Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) and signed by Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.). It was also signed by four Republicans who are said to be considering a run for president: Sen. Marco Rubio (Fla.), Sen. Rand Paul (Ky.), Sen. Ted Cruz (Texas) and Sen. Lindsey Graham (S.C.).”

So, some upstart Tea Party back bencher is the point man for this kind of bullshit, and it’s endorsed by 4 people who will never be president and approved by McConnell?

Oddly, scientists are pretty much in agreement that race has no real genetic meaning or significance.

The problem is that racism was very unpopular until Obama arrived on the scene and exposed the vast racism he and Rev Wright and Holder and millions of other Blacks held against Whites.
They have given racial animus new life.

Here’s why I don’t get upset about “doping” - because “the field” is never level, and it never can be.

This idea that using performance enhancing chemicals un-“levels” something is a fallacy.

Differences in genetics, in utero development, in childhood development, and then finally in support received while pursuing a sporting activity, are so different for people around the world that the idea that competitors start off on equal footing is laughable.

Greets and saluts from the thawing NYC metro area. It’s sunny and finally warming up, which is good for the soul and for getting rid of the ugly mountains of dirty snow that have piled up over the past 8 weeks. It’ll be good to see them disappear, and that DOT crews can get on fixing the potholes that have taken their place.

Posting will be probably light, as life has a way of getting in the way of one of my more pleasurable endeavors. Oh well.

At the same time, my tolerance for BS has dropped down to zero. Take those opposed to the HPV vaccine for example. You’re willing to let your kids get cancer? Really? You think that it increases promiscuity (it doesn’t), but can spare them from cervical, anal, vaginal, and other cancers, plus other ailments. All for less than $500 (since it’s mostly picked up by insurance).

Yeah, I’m sure these idiot anti-vaxxers have $100,000 lying around for cancer treatments. Or more if you don’t have insurance, or several thousand even if you do. And years of radiation and chemo, and debilitation and pain and suffering to the patient and all the mental health stresses on the patient and their family and friends.

I challenge any of these HPV opponents to go to an oncology ward anywhere in the country and talk to anyone - whether they’re a cervical cancer patient or otherwise, and ask them whether if there was a vaccine available at the time they were a teen, that they would have taken it to prevent getting cancer. Every last one would probably jump at the chance - twice on Sundays.

We have the ability to prevent an entire class of cancers from happening - and yet anti-vaxxers/knuckle draggers will do all they can to prevent vaccinations of those that should get it.

I just don’t get it.

Knowing far too many people with cancer makes me sick to my stomach watching people obstruct vaccinations that can prevent a certain type of cancer.

Looks like the MSM hasn’t changed much:

While functioning as a public spokesman, Pavlichenko traveled to the United States and Canada, becoming the first citizen of the Soviet Union to be received at the White House by a U.S. President, in this case Franklin Roosevelt. She was not impressed by the U.S. media who were more concerned with her outfit than the war and her experiences in it.

“I am amazed at the kind of questions put to me by the women press correspondents in Washington. Don’t they know there is a war? They asked me silly questions such as do I use powder and rouge and nail polish and do I curl my hair? One reporter even criticized the length of the skirt of my uniform, saying that in America women wear shorter skirts and besides my uniform made me look fat…This made me angry. I wear my uniform with honor. It has the Order of Lenin on it. It has been covered with blood in battle. It is plain to see that with American women what is important is whether they wear silk underwear under their uniforms. What the uniform stands for, they have yet to learn.”

I’m still shaking my head over wingnuts who keep insisting that one of the “suppressed emails” is the Benghazi stand down order.

Yeah sure…Hillary sent an email for that, because email is soooo much faster and more reliable than the usual channels….

Yes but the media, excuse me the Liberal Media, is telling me that Hillary’s email “scandal” is “growing”, so it must be super-serious. ///

I do wish there was a deeper Democratic “bench”. I’m not sure who else should run, though. I still like Howard Dean (I know, I know, but hey, in a world where Ben Carson can have no experience and say any number of dumb or outrageous things and still be a somewhat serious candidate…), I like Virginia’s two senators. I wish the Democrats had a Westerner or two they could put up.

But I’m basically OK with Hillary and recognize that after this phony email scandal dies down something else similarly ridiculous will come up after that. It’s gonna be a wacky ride.

The whole Benghazi hysteria is an attempt by the Republicans to preemptively kill Hillary’s candidacy. The email “scandal” just gives them another reason to resurrect the Benghazi battle cry (as if they needed an excuse).

Right-to-work legislation still an issue

Hundreds of people showed up on Sunday to talk the NM senate out of passing the RTW bill the NM house sent them.

It already made it through the New Mexico House of Representatives, but can controversial right-to-work union changing legislation make it through the Democratic-controlled Senate?

Hundreds of people gave lawmakers an earful about a few proposed bills on both sides Sunday in a Senate committee hearing. From the start of the hearing, it was obvious that hundred wanted to take part.

“There’s no saving a seat,” said the hearing officer charged with keeping order over the group.

Even on a Sunday, the hearing drew hundreds of people, high security and another big debate.

“The intent of mine (‘right-to-work’ bill) as well is to guarantee the individual workers choice,” said Rep. Dennis Roch, the Republican lawmaker who’s behind HB 75, which is titled the “Employee Preference Act.”

[…],

480 Amory Blaine  Mar 9, 2015 9:23:24am

Fuckface signed it.

Scott Walker signs right-to-work bill

Note:

At a recent Senate committee hearing on the bill, James Hoffman, president and owner of Hoffman Construction Co. of Black River Falls, said the change could harm his business. He said Operating Engineers Local 139 runs training programs that provide him with a steady stream of workers.

If those employees can opt out of paying union fees, membership rolls will dwindle and the training programs will likely be scaled back, he said.

“I ask you: Why are you doing this to my company?” he said.

Although I give two shits about Mr. Self Interested Cock-Knuckles, I have schadenfreude for local 139. They were one of the only labor unions to support Walker signing Act 10, enthusiastically.

FUCK YOU LOCAL 139 - me

Was helping my neighbor corral her dog (which is a story in and of itself) and we got to talking about current events. In genuine honesty, she professed her admiration for Bill O’Reilly and his No Spin Zone, and he how he just quickly real off fact-after-fact.

Very causally, I mentioned “Guy’s an unrepentant liar. You know how he made up all that stuff of how he was in the Falklands, and single handily saved a camera man from being killed Argentina?”

Turns out she has just started watching Fox News’s primetime line up in an effort to stay informed of current events. It honestly was a fascinating conversation.

She’s a genuinely nice person, but by her admission is scared of the world. Every single current event we talked about (Netanyahu at Congress, negotiating with Iran, Obama’s prayer breakfast) was a perfect distillation of a Bullshit Mountain talking point.

I made sure not to make her feel bad or put her down, but I did what I could to refute the misinformation she was being fed, with what little skill I possess. I did not hesitate to tell her to stop watching Fox, though. I made it clear in no uncertain terms that the network makes its money by spreading lies to upset people.

We’ll see how it goes.

Have any of the GOP hopefuls really announced their candidacies? Most seem to be straddling the line right now, running “committees” that are “looking into” bids, but I don’t believe any have actually made the leap.

I’d say part of the reason no Democrats are coming forward is that none of them have the name recognition she does. Who wants to jump into a race where you’re already years behind and struggling to reach parity?

As for the “scandal,” the reactions to it seem to have already been baked in. The media sees it as a major coup, the GOP are trying to portray it as “more of the same,” and her critics on the Left are using it to reinforce their belief that she should step aside so some unicorn candidate can step forward and unite the party.

Yeah, years of beatings of union workers, cos hiring off-duty cops, threats and intimidation. Been there, done that when organizers were trying hard in the early 70s.

Anyone remember the story of working mother Ella Wiggins and the Loray Mill strike of 1929? She’s a union hero and killed before her time.

We leave our homes in the morning,
We kiss our children good bye,
While we slave for the bosses,
Our children scream and cry.

But understand, all workers,
Our union they do fear,
Let’s stand together, workers,
And have a union here.

Students stage walkout, rally at Capitol over police shooting

Students from University of Wisconsin-Madison and local high schools staged a walkout Monday morning and marched to the state Capitol, where they planned to protest the death of Tony Robinson.

Just before noon, protesters began to enter the Capitol amid chants by organizers, “be peaceful.”

Plans for the “All Madison Walk out” were posted on Facebook.

Students walked out of classes at Madison East High School and at least one middle school at 10:30 a.m. University students gathered at Bascom Hall before beginning a march to the Capitol.

“For the last 10 years, I have systematically reduced employment in Milwaukee, from 350 union workers 10 years ago to 120 today,” Meeusen said. “If Wisconsin didn’t go right-to-work … and our contract is up November of 2016 … we have plans we could be down to zero by then.”

Indeed, Badger Meter has a history of shipping good paying jobs to Mexico. Even worse, Meeusen extorted Right to Woe laws by threatening to ship more jobs there if he didn’t get to screw over his workers here.

The general media just can’t report science. In this case the use of the term “accelerate” is out of place.

There is nothing really new here, just the churn of a media filling webspace with stuff.

Wrt climate change, nothing I have seen come across the desk seems really new. Bottom line has not changed. Incremental improvements in measuring this or that. Bigger/faster computers make for more model runs, etc.

We diddle with small headlines because we really don’t want to do anything about the big headline.

re: #565 Kragar

The voluntaristic principles of liberalism and libertarianism do not entail that the form of government should be democratic. Rousseau saw the analogy with voluntary slavery and tried to respond.

If an individual, says Grotius, can alienate his liberty and make himself the slave of a master, why could not a whole people do the same and make itself subject to a king?27

Rousseau inveighed against these contractual freedoms on the basis of the quid pro quo and the “poor judgment” arguments (which we have already considered). He concluded that people should be forced to be “free.” But such coercion cannot be justified on libertarian grounds. Democracy is only one among an indefinite number of voluntary forms of government, each of which embodies a different social division of authority, responsibility, and risk bearing. People should not be forced to “consent” to one form of government and thus be denied the freedom to make alternative voluntary arrangements. There is no necessary connection between libertarian principles and democracy (and thus the word “democracy” does not even appear in the index of Nozick’s book).

re: #567 lawhawk

Looks like a manufactured home was clipped by the train, causing the derailment.

At grade crossings are extremely dangerous, but don’t expect them to disappear anytime soon in the US. The cost would be prohibitive. So, instead of spending the money to upgrade the infrastructure, we get derailments on a regular basis - either from worn out infrastructure, or because motor vehicles get into the path of oncoming trains.
