SICK: GOP Senators Warn Iran Not To Trust The U.S.

Putting Obama Hatred Over U.S. Interests
Politics • Views: 33,191

In an unprecedented move, 47 US senators warned Iran that any nuclear deal made would last only as long as President Obama remained in office.

I don’t know how this can be anything other than Obama Derangement Syndrome at its absolute worst. There currently is no deal so how do these Republican Senators know what a deal would look like? The answer is, they don’t. They only know that Obama’s name will be attached to it so it has to go.

Reuters

Republican senators warned Iran on Monday that any nuclear deal made with U.S. President Barack Obama could last only as long as he remains in office, in an unusual intervention into U.S. foreign policy-making.

The letter, signed by 47 U.S. senators, says Congress plays a role in ratifying international agreements and points out that Obama will leave office in January 2017, while many in Congress will remain in Washington long after that.

“We will consider any agreement regarding your nuclear-weapons program that is not approved by the Congress as nothing more than an executive agreement between President Obama and Ayatollah Khamenei,” the letter read.

The GOP message to the world is the same as it is for America:

“You cannot trust us to honor the deals that we make.”

And this isn’t just one or two kooks, this is pretty much HALF the entire U.S. senate.

Also notice how they already expect to take the White House next year.

You know that is what the GOP would call it if the Democrats tried to conduct their own foreign policy in opposition to a Republican President.

Yeah, I’m sure Jeb’s team is absolutely thrilled to have this now hanging over their heads. He’s been trying hard to avoid his brother’s legacy, now he’s going to be faced with questions about whether or not he’s going to push the nation into a war with Iran.

Somehow, I am reminded of a tiff with my ex. I asked her one evening when she had a gynecologist’s appointment the next morning, she did not know and could not be bothered to go into the office to check.

She said she thought it was at 10am.

I let her sleep in the nest morning, she awoke at 9.30 to find that the appointment was at 9 instead of 10?

So she called the gynecologist and told them that the reason she was late was because her husband told her the wrong time for the appointment.

She hated me nearly as much as the GOP hates Obama.

9 Lidane  Mar 9, 2015 11:05:24am

re: #14 Fourth Football of the Apocalypse

An agreement doesn’t necessarily have to take the form of a treaty. Ratification isn’t necessary.

However, if there is a formalized treaty, the President could sign, but it wouldn’t be in force until the Senate ratifies.

Roles of Executive and Legislative branches in US foreign policy (under ideal circumstances).

Jack Goldsmith:

“The letter states that “the Senate must ratify [a treaty] by a two-thirds vote.” But as the Senate’s own web page makes clear: “The Senate does not ratify treaties. Instead, the Senate takes up a resolution of ratification, by which the Senate formally gives its advice and consent, empowering the president to proceed with ratification” (my emphasis). ”

“I’m so old that I can remember when writing letters to Iranian leaders was considered treason.”

“…Iran must be perfectly aware that the United States has a Congress that is constantly punching itself in the face, and Iran’s own hawks are relying on the likes of Tom Cotton & Co. to invoke their constitutional powers to push the United States out of any international agreement that’s been reached. That way Iran can continue its nuclear program uninterrupted and blame the collapse of diplomacy on dysfunction within the United States government, and it will be correct.”

33 Kragar  Mar 9, 2015 11:19:39am

The senators’ letter is an unserious act of anti-diplomacy specifically designed to undermine the president’s efforts to conduct foreign affairs in his capacity as chief executive. As such, the correspondence tests the limits of the Logan Act, which reads in part,

“Any citizen of the United States, wherever he may be, who, without authority of the United States, directly or indirectly commences or carries on any correspondence or intercourse with any foreign government or any officer or agent thereof, with intent to influence the measures or conduct of any foreign government or of any officer or agent thereof, in relation to any disputes or controversies with the United States, or to defeat the measures of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both.”

While the letter’s signatories are U.S. senators, that does not mean they have the “authority of the United States” as required by the law since when it comes to conducting foreign policy, the executive branch is the United States, taking into consideration the occasional “Advice and Consent of the Senate” as prescribed by the Constitution. However, this letter is neither advice, nor consent. It’s directly addressed to leaders of a foreign government presently involved in talks with the U.S., and it is designed to thwart those talks. Unless the senators were authorized by the president to address Iran’s leaders in this letter, a case can be made that 47 U.S. senators just violated a federal law that carries a prison term of up to three years.

“I’m so old that I can remember when writing letters to Iranian leaders was considered treason.”

Second, the offices of our Constitution have different characteristics. For example, the president may serve only two 4-year terms, whereas senators may serve an unlimited number of 6-year terms. As applied today, for instance, President Obama will leave office in January 2017, while most of us will remain in office well beyond then-perhaps decades.

I’m so old I remember when Republicans ran on the sacred rights of TERM LIMITS!!!!

My first thought was actually the shady dealings by Nixon’s team in Paris where they had their representative, Anna Chennault tell the North Vietnamese I think through Kissinger who was part of LBJ’s negotiating team to hold off until Nixon got elected and would give them a better offer. I am no conspiracy nut but this and that really gets me wondering if the stories about the infamous October Surprise may have some validity to them.

That’s one of my favorite episodes. It was also the first time I learned about George and Jeb Bush. And yeah I hate that too. There’s so many great Simpsons moments. I’ve been thinking of the late and great Phil Hartman’s Lionel Hutz a lot lately since I started my paralegal classes. Some of my favorite Hutzisms are “I’ve argued in front of this court many times before, often as a lawyer.” “Say hello to Miguel Sanchez” and I think this was his introduction as a character episode but he’s talking about how Judge Snyder hates him and he says “Well Judge Snyder kind of has it in for me since I accidentally ran over his dog and by dog I mean son and by accidentally I mean repeatedly.” Plus I think Marge ended up choosing him since there was a pizza deal.

What’s most disgusting about these kind of attitudes is there are plenty of children who just need a loving home and there are plenty of gay couples that can and do provide that. And then you have assholes like Newt who call the gay couples not wanting to be discriminated against by Catholic orphanages the “bad guys” because of states that forbid discrimination by orphanages. If these groups really gave a shit about the kids, they would want an as loving environment possible for the kids.

It’s so much easier to sound like an expert and pundit when it’s an information-free zone. There isn’t a copy of the actual deal circulating. It’s still under wraps, as is all the details about what exactly the parties are agreeing to.

There’s still a bunch to work out too, so what may be part of the deal today may not make it into the final deal in June (or if the deadline is extended further).

I’d look to this site which seems to be playing the reporting straight.

First, what do they think they’re going to accomplish? Do they really think Iran will say, “Gosh, maybe we should concede everything! These guys mean BUSINESS!” Has it not occurred to them that a natural reaction on Iran’s part might be to just say, “Fuck this noise,” and drop out of the talks, and just go build the damned nukes?

Second, what’s their endgame? They as much as say they won’t trust any agreement with Iran, and if that’s the case, and Iran acquiring a nuke is really ‘unacceptable’, the ONLY ALTERNATIVE is war.

That kid is why I’m not exactly optimistic about the conservative youth. Yeah there are some that have overcome the homophobia and racism that plagues their elders but as we see with this and the frat vid, it’s not exactly gone. Oh and the other problem with these stupid memes is there’s no explanation at all for why the war on poverty apparently separated families and let’s not forget furthermore that LBJ’s war on poverty really wasn’t actualized due to right wing interference and LBJ himself being boggled down by Vietnam. It’s a lot more accurate and easier to cite the rise in imprisioning victimless crimes for the decrease in two parent households.

But yeah I see conservatives all the time blame LBJ and the war on poverty for “ruining the black family.” Let’s look at reality. Secondly, conservatives ignore the rise in prosecuting victimless crimes like drug offenses which is what they championed. And then there’s the inevitable is that two parent households will go down somewhat as divorce becomes more common in a society. This guy Cotton has openly admitted his goal is to wreck the talks with Iran.

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), the organizer of a controversial letter warning Iran that the U.S. government will not necessarily abide by any agreement Iran strikes with the Obama administration, previously told a conservative audience that the goal of congressional action should be to scuttle talks with Iran. The U.S. should, instead, engage in a policy of “regime change,” he argued.

Iran hawks in the House and Senate have long said that their aim is to help the White House strike a tougher deal with Iran. The administration and others, meanwhile, have charged that the hawks’ true motivation is to undermine the talks entirely. Cotton, for his part, has made no secret that he wants the talks to fail.

“The end of these negotiations isn’t an unintended consequence of congressional action. It is very much an intended consequence. A feature, not a bug, so speak,” Cotton said in January, speaking at a conservative conference hosted by the advocacy group Heritage Action for America.

He’s not sorry. He’s sorry that he got scrutiny for doing it. Well, some of the folks who signed this letter don’t want any agreement, they want regime change in Iran.

So that makes it easy.

Because the last time we did that it was so easy, and worked so well, that it’s BOUND to work in a much more populous country that hasn’t had its army kicked to shit.

For all this discussion about the letter and it’s motives… Why should I feel sure this particular deal with Iran is worthwhile and appropriate? The only real friend of Israel in the P5+1 is us.

I guess I’m looking for a factual discussion of the terms of the deal and the long term implications. I trust Obama to do the best deal he can get. If that is a good enough deal is the thing.

I don’t think we need to know what’s in the deal (which isn’t finalized because it’s still under negotiation) in order to be able to say that what these Senators did is inappropriate at best. Especially since at least one of them is on record as saying that any deal wouldn’t work for them, that they will accept nothing short of regime change.

What I don’t understand: the situation with Iran has three potential outcomes. The status quo, where we do nothing different and they continue to work towards a bomb. A deal where both sides make some concessions with the aim, at least on our side, of reducing their capability of making a bomb. Or deciding the line has been crossed and going to war to make sure they don’t get a bomb at all.

As far as I can tell, Republicans are advocating for the first option to eventually become the third option.

And personally, I am really fucking tired of war. I’m sick of paying for it. I’m heartsick at watching families suffer for it. I would like to avoid war. And it’s not like option number 2 precludes using option number 3 at a later point if necessary but at least we will have fucking tried.

Seven Republican senators are not signatories to the letter, and it’s an interesting list:

Bob Corker of Tennessee, who is the chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Corker is the sponsor of a bill that would increase sanctions on Iran only if Congress rejects a final agreement with Iran;
Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, a Washington veteran;
Dan Coats of Indiana, whose office declined to comment;
Susan Collins of Maine, a leading moderate Republican;
Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, who also sometimes bucks her party;
Thad Cochran of Mississippi; and
Jeff Flake of Arizona, whose office told me Flake supports Corker’s bill because he thinks the Senate ought to have a say in any deal but considered the letter “unnecessary.”

Did you know the Senate rejected the treaty of Versailles?

And for similarly foolish reasons. Some of this may sound familiar to the current Senate.
Wiki

United States
After the Versailles conference Wilson claimed that “at last the world knows America as the savior of the world!”[89]
The Republican Party—led by Henry Cabot Lodge—controlled the U.S. Senate after the election of 1918, but the Senators were divided into multiple positions on the Versailles question. It proved possible to build a majority coalition, but impossible to build a two-thirds coalition that was needed to pass a treaty.[90]
An angry bloc of 12-18 “Irreconcilables”, mostly Republicans but also representatives of the Irish and German Democrats, fiercely opposed the Treaty. One block of Democrats strongly supported the Versailles Treaty, even with reservations added by Lodge. A second group of Democrats supported the Treaty but followed Wilson in opposing any amendments or reservations. The largest bloc—led by Senator Lodge—[91] comprised a majority of the Republicans. They wanted a treaty with reservations, especially on Article X, which involved the power of the League of Nations to make war without a vote by the U.S. Congress.[92] All of the Irreconcilables were bitter enemies of President Wilson, and he launched a nationwide speaking tour in the summer of 1919 to refute them. However, Wilson collapsed midway with a serious stroke that effectively ruined his leadership skills.[93]

For the record I deeply distrust two factions in the. The GOP and the Iranians Government

I don’t even think it’s IOKIYAR anymore. It’s just that the GOP’s preference for simple solutions to complex problems appeals to people who already feel burdened with all the decisions they have to make. Conspicuously absent from that list are my two Republican senators, Bob Corker and Lamar Alexander.

They may be TP-pandering shitheads, but, apparently, this was a bridge too far; I’ll take a sudden breakout of common sense from them whenever I can get it.

It was Florida man, of course.

re: #263 Great White Snark

I guess that’s why they wrote a letter to the other nations involved letting them know not to rely on what the US agreed to, because the next Republican president would totally go back on it.

/////

At some point their motivation doesn’t fucking matter to me, because what they are doing is against the office they are supposed to hold. But instead it’s that we’re making too much fuss about this letter and not thinking about their motivations and what’s in this deal because maybe they might have a point, we just can’t know.

My MBF must be on vacation, or working overtime for someone else. I’m going to go practice some harp.

I wonder what it was. Oh and by the way I see that so called moderate Mark Kirk is on the list. His presence on this letter needs to be noted and brought up by the DSCC when they inevitably go after him next year.

Still a massive “scandal” that everyone is “concerned” about.

Per blueraven’s post, Corker has a pending bill to increase sanctions on Iran if Congress does not approve the final agreement and there’s apparently no comment at this time from Alexander.

The MSM and the Wingnut media will never move on.

All I’m hearing from Real People™ in the Real World™ is some variation of: “Well, impeaching Bill Clinton worked out so well for them, obviously they think their only mistake was waiting till he was actually in office to do it”. This is a comedy for non-media types.

Actually, the English word Khamenei is a translation from the Farsi language, so either Khameini or Khamenei is correct.

Speaking of Lucy Lawless. Just finished watching the Spartacus remake on Stars. Needless to say childhood fantasies about seeing her naked were not in vane. I know that probably makes me a bad person but I can live with it.

re: #250 Jack Burton

The wording of the letter, aside from it’s primary purpose of undermining the executive branch is completely insulting.

They are describing to the Head of a Foreign state, things he should already well know, as if he is a small child.

But since this is really all about their dream of turning the entire region into a giant self-illuminated glass parking lot for all the Christians to park their Hummers in to see Jesus when he returns… I guess that condescending tone will only help.

And just think, they got a guy who’s got a whole 2 months of senatorin’ to be the main man on the letter. That’s gotta really impress everyone concerned.

Spit.

re: #221 klys (maker of Silmarils)

I don’t think we need to know what’s in the deal (which isn’t finalized because it’s still under negotiation) in order to be able to say that what these Senators did is inappropriate at best. Especially since at least one of them is on record as saying that any deal wouldn’t work for them, that they will accept nothing short of regime change.

I made it pretty clear my comment is an aside from the Senators actions. How many times must I point out I’m not defending the Senators action today?
