If you haven’t seen last night’s episode of The Walking Dead, this is kinda sorta a spoiler, so don’t watch if you DVR’ed it for later. But this scene was just awesome. This is why I love this show.

On the other hand, the Alabama guy who went viral with the “No gays on my junkpile” shtick is nice. Here’s his post for Butthurt Awareness Week:

“ButtHurtAwareness2015‬ Well my research team and I did some testing today on how to protect one’s self from butt hurt. We wrapped a towel around my head and I couldn’t see anything. We placed the towel over the screen and I couldn’t see the screen. So we turned off the interwebs and I opened a word document and wrote all the stuff I wanted to share with myself and I gave it a thumbs up. I looked through all my pictures and liked all of them and commented on them. This seemed to work well except Jeremy space only had one user and Jeremy net only had my information. So bravely I logged back on to the interwebs and I saw that there were other people on there that didn’t live life just like me…..I felt the butt hurt level creeping up.. I was scared then I remembered that I am a 39 year old man from Alabama and butt hurt was part of life. The Internet has opened up the entire world to us. We are going to see things we don’t like. Every day I try to use comedy, sarcasm and common sense to illustrate that the universe is a big damn place and there is enough room for your opinion and mine. But if we Shut the world out we become Mississippi. By the way if you hang around long enough I will offend you too; unless you’re a scientology follower Tom Cruise is scary.”

They do. And just about anyone who still advertises on Rush is off-limits to sane, rational people.

44 Nyet  Mar 9, 2015 7:05:15pm

Scam for paranoid wingnuts?

Celebrity spokespersons for LifeLock have included Howard Stern, Paul Harvey, Mark Levin, and Rush Limbaugh.[31] LifeLock is also active in many community groups including the National Organization for Victim Assistance (NOVA) and Junior Achievement.[32][33]

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani is a spokesman and was featured in the company’s TV commercials in 2013.

45 Nyet  Mar 9, 2015 7:06:36pm
Also in 2007, Todd Davis publicly posted his Social Security number as part of an ad campaign to promote the company’s identity theft protection services. As a result, Davis was a victim of 13 cases of identity theft between 2007 and 2008.[57][58][59] Regarding the campaign, Davis said, “we were trying to make the point that … all it takes is one data breach. The point of that campaign was to take proactive steps to protect your identity.”[13]

In February 2008, the credit information company Experian sued LifeLock for fraud and false advertising. Experian alleged that LifeLock placed false fraud alerts on behalf of its clients, thus keeping LifeLock clients’ files in a constant state of alert.[60][60][61] As part of a 2009 settlement, LifeLock set up a new proprietary service that does not rely on setting fraud alerts.[62]

In March 2010, LifeLock was fined $12 million by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) for deceptive advertising.[5] The FTC called their prior marketing claims misleading to consumers by claiming to be a 100% guarantee against all forms of identity theft.[63]

FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz, referring to the LifeLock TV ad showing the truck, said that “the protection they provided left such a large hole … that you could drive that truck through it.”[57] LifeLock agreed to pay $12 million to settle charges, by the FTC and 35 states, that the company’s identity theft prevention and data security claims were false.[64]

Court rules church can’t shield $60 million in abuse cases

In a blow to the Archdiocese of Milwaukee in its ongoing bankruptcy, a federal appeals court on Monday put a $60 million cemetery trust fund back in play to potentially settle claims related to sexual abuse by priests.

The ruling from the Seventh U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said the church cannot use the First Amendment or a 1993 law aimed at protecting religious freedom to shield the funds.

The court also said the judge who put the money off limits, U.S. District Judge Rudolph Randa, should have disclosed the fact his parents and other relatives are buried in a cemetery maintained by the trust fund. The court remanded the case to a different district court judge.

“This is a highly momentous day for clergy sex abuse survivors in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, who have suffered terribly since they were abused and have continued to suffer greatly as the Archdiocese has gone to great lengths to deny them justice,” said survivors’ attorney Jeff Anderson of St. Paul.

re: #61 Lidane

While the letter’s signatories are U.S. senators, that does not mean they have the “authority of the United States” as required by the law since when it comes to conducting foreign policy, the executive branch is the United States, taking into consideration the occasional “Advice and Consent of the Senate” as prescribed by the Constitution. However, this letter is neither advice, nor consent. It’s directly addressed to leaders of a foreign government presently involved in talks with the U.S., and it is designed to thwart those talks. Unless the senators were authorized by the president to address Iran’s leaders in this letter, a case can be made that 47 U.S. senators just violated a federal law that carries a prison term of up to three years.

Whether the law was broken or not, the fact remains that once again Republicans have shown themselves not only unfit to govern, but unwilling to govern, because governance sometimes means making agreements that don’t give you everything you want. That the vast majority of GOP senators have so publicly proclaimed their opposition to any deal that could ensure Iran will not pursue nuclear weapons is a travesty of foreign policy, a breach of custom, and possibly a felony.

It’s not going to happen. Technically what they did was kind of violation, sorta, maybe, however the Logan Act is Constitutionally iffy at best. Also, even if the Justice Department was of a mind to charge them the Speech and Debate Clause would be invoked, since I’m fairly certain that they had the letter read into the official record of the current session. Logan is the kind of thing you can threaten an idiotic private citizen with to try and dissuade them from a course of action, but no Administration is ever going to try and apply it to 47 sitting Senators.

JFYI, Linder defended Chuck on his site:

On the media front, jews are attacking CMC graduate Charles C. Johnson of GotNews because he revealed the name of “Jackie” the disturbed rape-liar in Virginia. Of course, what they really dislike is seeing their own jewish liar #SabrinaRubinErdely exposed. So her fellow jews attack Johnson with lies, and he threatens to sue. That was afoot early 12-12-14 on the twitter wires. The funny thing is that jew Erdely went to school with is and is same year (‘94) as fellow jew liar Stephen Glass, the story-concocter at The New Republic, as portrayed in the excellent movie “Shattered Glass” (my 2004 review at the link).

The interesting thing is, only one (out of 25) had heard of the Freedom Riders. It’s a mixed racial group, and I have a bunch of questions for them to think about. Before we watched, I explained that even though we had the Bill of Rights and the Civil War, minorities were still being denied their rights in the 60s, and if we couldn’t face the bad parts of our history, we wouldn’t be able to achieve the ultimate good in the future.

So I’m reading about how the Nazis turned Germany from the physics Mecca of the first third of the 20th century into the asylum for the tragicomic deutsche Physik. The champions of this monstrosity were two Nobel laureates, Lenard and Stark, who were bitter at Einstein et al. because their brains apparently refused to accept the new revolutionary ideas, so the geniuses (sarcasm both off & on) simply branded the relativity theory as “the Jewish lie”. Later though their influence waned because the “German physics” was quite simply not in accord with facts, and no matter how ideologically correct it was, it couldn’t deliver any results.

archive.org has an interesting transcript of a debate between Lenard and Einstein that took place in 1920, long before Lenard gained power.

i grew up under forced busing back in the 80s in Texas, when a federal judge basically told the school district what was up. My step-father used the N word extensively and said he’d disown any daughter who brought home a black suitor. Since then, they’ve voted for Obama twice, but old racist habits die hard, and I sometimes have to push back. I think they’d align with the protestors in Ferguson, but I haven’t actually broached the subject yet.

The one thing I did really like (I hate to use the word enjoy here) about Freedom Riders was the courage of all the riders - black and white - against pure evil. This wasn’t make believe, it wasn’t some far-away force, this was bats and guns and fire and all kinds of shit raining down on their heads. I still shake my head just thinking about the courage of those college students.

What a complete nontroversy. The student legislature voted to take a US flag down, then the student exec council vetoed that, and the flag is back up. It was inside the student government building, and not even outside on public display.

But flag fetishists get all worked up about this stuff, especially when scary brown people get worked up about the flag.

Alas, PowerPoint is de rigueur for presentations and lectures in education, especially in China. Educators latched onto the latest, greatest thing back in the 1980s and never let go. I’ve lost count of how many truly awful PPT lectures I’ve attended or had to grade as a teacher.

So I missed the Apple presentation, but is the Apple Watch really as ridiculous as it sounds? You have to have an iPhone to get the most of out it, meaning what they’re getting ready to sell is a $350 accessory for your $400 phone?

The Sport is $350, the next one up is $549 and the Edition is $10,000 and up. I can’t see paying even $350 so that I don’t have to pull my phone out of my pocket to answer it. That said, the thing will probably be a must-have for Apple fanbois.

Students in American universities aren’t much better when they do presentations and I really wish some of the professors would give zeroes if they do death by PowerPoint: I can read the slide just as well as you, thank you very much, I don’t need you to read it to me while making absolutely no eye contact with me.

I wish they’d actually show how to do a proper presentation including PPT or Keynote. It’s not rocket surgery.

The whole appeal to me was of being able to replace your cellphone and watch with one device that could do all the functions of both. But it seems that Apple and other phone manufacturers see money to be made in selling people a phone and a watch that cost three figures apiece.

No doubt. After all, there are plenty of nutters out there who line up on the block to buy a new iPhone the day it comes out, then piss and moan because all the technical issues haven’t been ironed out.

I thought the whole point of “smartwatches” was that they were to be a replacement for your phone, not an overpriced accessory for your overpriced phone.

Alas, PowerPoint is de rigueur for presentations and lectures in education, especially in China. Educators latched onto the latest, greatest thing back in the 1980s and never let go. I’ve lost count of how many truly awful PPT lectures I’ve attended or had to grade as a teacher.

For some assignments, I have to specifically tell my students here no PPTs, or else they’ll recycle something from the Internet Archive of Bad PPTs That Should Have Been Nuked Years Ago.

There’s a lot of people who give bad presentations.

With or without Powerpoint.

I don’t blame the tool for the fact that a lot of people don’t know how to give a good presentation.

I remain eternally grateful that science has been able to move beyond transparencies.

Neoreactionary movement

Neoreactionaries are the latest in a long line of intellectuals who somehow think that their chosen authoritarian thugs wouldn’t put them up against the wall. Possibly using sheer volume of words as a bulletproof shield.[2] Or that they are somehow too competent, virtuous and useful to end up one of the serfs.

Many neoreactionaries were former libertarians; founder Mencius Moldbug describes his own journey as “from Mises to Carlyle” via Hans-Hermann Hoppe, a “libertarian” who pushed feudalism as his desired end state.[3] It’s ideal for soi-disant libertarians who realise they don’t actually like freedom for others all that much.

The movement is largely insignificant and mostly an object of curiosity (one must hope it remains this way), though it has attracted some racists of the pseudo-intellectual variety.

re: #201 goddamnedfrank

Neoreactionaries believe “The Cathedral,” is a meta-institution that consists largely of Harvard and other Ivy League schools, The New York Times and various civil servants. Anissimov calls it a “self-organizing consensus.” Sometimes the term is used synonymously with political correctness. The fundamental idea is that the Cathedral regulates our discussions enforces a set of norms as to what sorts of ideas are acceptable and how we view history — it controls the Overton window, in other words.

The name comes from Yarvin’s idea that progressivism (and in his view, even today’s far right Republicans are progressive) is a religion, and that the media-academic-civil service complex punishes “heretical” views.

So what exactly is the Cathedral stopping neoreactionaries from talking about? Well, the merits of monarchy for starters. But mostly, as far as I can tell, they want to be able to say stuff like “Asians, Jews and whites are smarter than blacks and Hispanics because genetics” without being called racist. Or at least be able to express such views without the negative consequences of being labeled racist.

Speaking of which, neoreactionaries are obsessed with a concept called “human biodiversity” (HBD) — what used to be called “scientific racism.” Specifically, they believe that IQ is one of — if not the — most important personal traits, and that it’s predominately genetic. Neoreactionaries would replace, or supplement, the “divine right” of kings and the aristocracy with the “genetic right” of elites.

To call these claims “controversial” would be putting it lightly, but they underpin much of anti-egalitarian and pro-traditionalist claims neoreactionaries make. Delving into the scientific debate over race, genetics and IQ is beyond the scope of this article, but I’ve included some links on the topic in the reading list.

It’s not hard to see why this ideology would catch-on with white male geeks. It tells them that they are the natural rulers of the world, but that they are simultaneously being oppressed by a secret religious order. And the more media attention is paid to workplace inequality, gentrification and the wealth gap, the more their bias is confirmed. And the more the neoreactionaries and techbros act out, the more the media heat they bring.

In reality “The Cathedral” is just people who ask themselves “How can we make society better for everyone and not be gigantic douchebags?” #NRx is the natural next evolution of modern conservatism, a gigantic openly racist regression to an old and outmoded social order. One primarily constructed on a race and class based aristocracy wrapped in a thin patina of pseudo-scientific total bullshit.

Reminds me of the quote from Kurt von Hammerstein-Equord:

I divide my officers into four groups. There are clever, diligent, stupid, and lazy officers. Usually two characteristics are combined. Some are clever and diligent — their place is the General Staff. The next lot are stupid and lazy — they make up 90 percent of every army and are suited to routine duties. Anyone who is both clever and lazy is qualified for the highest leadership duties, because he possesses the intellectual clarity and the composure necessary for difficult decisions. One must beware of anyone who is stupid and diligent — he must not be entrusted with any responsibility because he will always cause only mischief.

With Republicans needing significant Democratic support to achieve their goal of derailing the talks — or at least altering the emerging deal — some senators said Cotton’s effort could backfire by injecting excessive partisanship into the debate over how best to prevent a nuclear-armed Iran.

Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker said he was approached to sign the letter by Cotton, a Republican from Arkansas, but he concluded it might set back his ultimate goal: veto-proof support for a bill he has sponsored requiring a congressional vote to approve or reject an Iran deal.

How parents may help create their own little narcissists

eurekalert.org

(snip)

“While parental overvaluation was associated with higher levels of child narcissism over time, it was not associated with more self-esteem. In contrast, parents who showed more emotional warmth did have children with higher self-esteem over time. Parental warmth was not associated with narcissism.

“Overvaluation predicted narcissism, not self-esteem, whereas warmth predicted self-esteem, not narcissism,” Bushman said.

“Parental overvaluation was connected to narcissism even after the researchers took into account the narcissism levels of the parents. In other words, it is not just that narcissistic parents have narcissistic children - the parental overvaluation played a key role.” More

Anita Hill: Joe Biden Botched The Clarence Thomas Hearings

Anita Hill, the woman who accused then-Supreme Court justice nominee Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment, said Vice President Joe Biden did a “terrible job” as Senate Judiciary Committee chairman during the 1991 hearings.

Hill spoke about the hearings in an interview on HuffPost Live Thursday, saying they were meant to “inform the public.”

But Hill said Biden never called three women to testify who were subpoenaed to discuss alleged inappropriate behavior by Thomas. In addition, Hill said there were experts available who could have “given information and helped the public understand sexual harassment.”

Hill is right, Biden fucked that one up badly.

The Senate can ratify treaties, but the GOP seriously overstepped its authority to act on foreign policy matters with that letter. And any deal with Iran doesn’t necessarily rise to the level of a treaty requiring ratification in any event.

The WH has already signaled that very point.

All the GOP wants to do is scuttle the negotiations and they don’t have any plan B except to blame Obama for its failure.

In other news, the latest polls from Israel seem to show that Likud is behind Zionist Block, so Netanyahu may not be PM for much longer.

For all the supposed boost that the speech before Congress would give him, it’s turned out to be anything but.

Frankly, it’s not surprising that Netanyahu was engaging in backchannels with the Palestinians and that the 1967 borders came up, since that’s the starting point on any final status talks. Pretty much anyone who follows the conflict knows that the borders will be a variation on the 1967 border between West Bank and Israel (Green Line) with the variations being related to givebacks - Israel keeps X acres to maintain contiguous communities, gives back Y equivalent). There was a Times article from a few years back goes into the various formulations that could be part of the final status.

But that he’s even floated this pierces that whole notion he wouldn’t budge on land givebacks. It seriously narrows the gap between what Likud and Zionist Bloc would do.

And that ad that follows a familiar GOP script of equating union folks with terrorists (like Walker and his union negotiations being experience for dealing with ISIL) went so far over the line that Israelis are fed up with his BS.

This is yet another shooting that involved an unarmed black man. He was, in fact, naked. There may have been drugs and/or mental health issues involved. Yet the man is dead.

Law enforcement simply refuses to recognize that there’s a huge problem with excessive force and officer involved shootings, especially when it comes to dealing with the mentally ill.

It goes to training, legal protections for use of deadly force, and a system that allows officers to use deadly force even though circumstances would seem to indicate that deadly force is not warranted.

This person was a threat to themselves and needed medical care and treatment. Not to be shot to death.

LOL no. A documentary came out last year, that’s why it’s been in the press again. It was a long time ago and I’d like to think that the mistake shaped some of Biden’s views about the trustworthiness of Republicans and subsequent willingness to fight for his beliefs. I don’t even think it compares to some of Hillary’s more noteworthy blunders like the sniper fire story fiasco, but it was definitely one of Biden’s lowest points.

re: #308 Nyet

Let’s not kid ourselves about Likud’s founding and development as a political movement in Israel. But let’s also not forget that Likud’s Menachem Begin was integral to signing the Camp David Accords, which helped set the table for land for peace deals that have have been the framework of the Israel-Palestinian/Arab negotiations ever since.

Likewise, the Gaza disengagement was pulled off by Ariel Sharon, who had been with Likud for decades until splitting off and forming Kadima.

Those two actions could be seen as equivalents of Nixon going to China.

The current Likud movement looks little like its origins, but Netanyahu runs a very tight ship and doesn’t tolerate any opposition. He’d like people to think that he’s got all the security answers for Israel (which is #1 on Israelis’ minds), but fact is that there’s very little different between Likud and Labor on this, especially as word comes that he was floating the idea of 1967 borders in some form during backchannel talks with the Palestinians.

Without the security issue, there’s little reason to give Likud another shot at running the coalition government especially since Zionist bloc does so much better on economic and housing issues, which are the next two top concerns.

I have to say that I’m kind of surprised by the amount of negative blowback Tom Cotton and his merry band of seditionists are getting today.

The outrage could be a few notches higher, but even the amount I’m seeing is kind of a shock. The Daily News’ editorial (while engaging in some of the usual both-siderism) is justifiably harsh.

Regardless of President Obama’s fecklessness in negotiating a nuclear deal with Iran, 47 Republican U.S. senators engaged in treachery by sending a letter to the mullahs aimed at cutting the legs out from under America’s commander-in-chief.

We join GOP signatories in opposing the pact as outlined, but we strenuously condemn their betrayal of the U.S. constitutional system.

The participants represented the bulk of the Republicans’ 54-member senatorial majority, vesting their petulant, condescending stunt with the coloration of an institutional foreign policy statement.

They are an embarrassment to the Senate and to the nation.

Dems should seize on this and beat the crap out of them with this stunt. Tom Cotton handed them a Louisville Slugger, and they should damn well get to using it.

I think the reason the Dems are not making more of this is because too many of them in the Senate really do think the deal is a “bad” one and want to vote on it so as to provide themselves some cover next year. “no legal value and mostly a propaganda ploy” - just like the Bibi speech…another swing and miss by Republicans.

The Iranians know all about propaganda, so they recognize it when they see it. They also seem to have a better grasp of international law than the GOP does, which is rather comical.

No one knows the actual details of what the negotiations are or what the specifics of the deal will be as it’s still being negotiated.

It just seems that the GOP is far more interested in scuttling the talks, to proceed directly to further sanctions, or military action, even though Iran seems to be in the same position as North Korea - on track to eventually get nuclear weapons, and constraining them seems to be the only alternative.

Heck, this seems to be a situation straight out of ST: Undiscovered Country, where Klingon, Vulcan, and Earth reps all conspired to thwart peace talks because peace was a greater danger to their belief system than ongoing conflict that was unsustainable. Iranian hardliners may be thinking that these talks are denying them their right to pursue nukes, while GOPers in the US want to see talks fail because they want to pursue harsher sanctions or even military action to thwart Iran. Throw in Israeli and Saudi interests that might want to see talks fail and you’ve got vested interests in watching this fail.

On the other side of the ledger, there are a lot of people who want to see them succeed because of the costs of going nuclear in Iran is sapping the economy at a time they can ill afford it; the difficulty of figuring out a military option that wouldn’t turn out to be a clusterfuck; and practical considerations that a nuclear North Korea hasn’t actually changed the dynamics there, so why would a nuclear Iran be different.

Now, there are significant differences between the Iranian and North Korean experience, not the least of which is a religious fervor in Iran that includes a centuries long conflict between Sunni and Shi’a, with Shi’ites gaining the upper hand in the Middle East (though Pakistan could arm Saudi Arabia to negate that advantage). Self preservation might limit what Iran is willing to do (and what North Korea has done so far), and continuing the regime means doing only so much sabre rattling (turning the nukes into an empty threat).

North Korea is contained, so it isn’t a stretch to see a contained Iran.

I think the reason the Dems are not making more of this is because too many of them in the Senate really do think the deal is a “bad” one and want to vote on it so as to provide themselves some cover next year. But this letter has only made that a harder task than it already was after Bibi’s speech.

“We’re really, really, better than the GOP, it’s just that we can’t take a stand on anything or support our party’s President because that might cause people who would never vote for us not to vote for us.”

Way to cultivate indifference Dems.

re: #340 lawhawk

ST:VI is a rather appropriate analogy to the present situation, much as it was to the fall of the USSR. You have the hardliners in Iran in the form of Chang, who cannot accept a situation where Iran is not the dominant power in the region and see any deal that would mean delaying or abandoning nuclear weapons as denying them that which they view as rightfully theirs.

Then you have those like Cotton and McCain in the form of Cartwright, convinced that they finally have Iran on the ropes and they only need to keep the pressure on a bit longer. In their minds, the sanctions have proven that Iran is vulnerable, that if they just hold on a bit longer or tighten the screws a bit more, the Ayatollahs will come to them begging for mercy.

And finally you have Bibi in the form of Ambassador Nanclus, who can only view the matter in the danger (phantom or real) posed to his power if the US and Iran begin to ratchet down the mutual animosity. Making a deal like this would not only making beating the war drums harder, but it could serve as a pathway to future deals and possibly a normalization between us. And that’s something that scares the bejesus out of Cold Warriors like Bibi, the idea that Israel would no longer be the only ally in the region.

They still can’t figure out how candidates who stood strongly for something, even if many of us find that something repellent, whipped the living shit out of candidates who didn’t stand for anything. Timidity doesn’t win elections these days - if it ever did at all.

And the bizarre thing is that Israel and Iran do have a whole lot more in common than either would care to admit being minority populations in the region (Shi’a are a majority in Iran, but minority in Middle East; Jews are a majority in Israel, but minority elsewhere); the persecution complex runs deep, both have long and storied histories, and there’s a secret history of the two countries working together (see Iran-Contra). Detente between US and Iran would actually improve matters between Israel and Iran, especially as it relates to Hizbullah, Lebanon, Syria, and could lead to improved border security at a minimum and normalization of relations down the road (even if the state of war continues - at least they’d all be talking).

Indeed, but that actually threatens the careers of men like Bibi, who rely upon the strife to sell themselves as “protectors.” The man has developed a bit of a messiah complex, feeling he not only speaks for all Israelis, but now all Jews. So the idea of reproach with Iran, dealing with them as equals rather than the subject of his decades long scaremongering campaign? It would never happen, at least not with him in power.

VOCABULARY WORD OF THE DAY:

Semiotics (also called semiotic studies; not to be confused with the Saussurean tradition called semiology) is the study of meaning-making, the philosophical theory of signs and symbols.[1] This includes the study of signs and sign processes (semiosis), indication, designation, likeness, analogy, metaphor, symbolism, signification, and communication. Semiotics is closely related to the field of linguistics, which, for its part, studies the structure and meaning of language more specifically. The Semiotic Tradition explores the study of signs and symbols as a significant part of communications. As different from linguistics, however, semiotics also studies non-linguistic sign systems. Semiotics often is divided into three branches:

Semantics: relation between signs and the things to which they refer; their denotata, or meaning

Syntactics: relations among signs in formal structures

Pragmatics: relation between signs and sign-using agents

You cannot take these folks seriously. They’ve got such a warped worldview, and rational wiki definitely treats them with the respect they deserve.

It attracts pseudo intellectuals, which would explain CCJ’s attraction.

All has gone fine with the prosthetic (other than losing the first one in a kayak flip over last summer, but that is another adventure story for another time :-)). So with the right foot gone she has not been able to drive.

All last week and yesterday she has been down in Johnstown training to use a left foot pedal. This morning she passed her driving test and we are just waiting for the garage to call and set up a day and time to go have the left foot pedal installed on her car. This is such a boost for her outlook on things. The loss of the freedom of driving and having to depend on someone to get her here and there (especially when I am at work) has been bothering her.

It is a happy day for her.

There seems to me to be a deep contempt for democracy by so called libertarians. They really see the country as intended only for the elite and it’s why they deserve to be called reactionary. What’s frustrating though is a lot of young people hear libertarian ideas and talk of liberty and freedom and ignore the big picture which is if the Austrian school economists had their way, we’d live in a society with little to no upward mobility with no middle class. Unfortunately a lot of young people love hearing the idea of liberty and “the government off my back”.

I think it’s that but I think it really is the abstract concepts that libertarians in the media talk about. It’s easy to be attracted to something when all you hear is about how you deserve total liberty and freedom from government but the fact is you are the government and the government is you. Unfortunately and I blame Reagan and a lot of Republicans for this is the creation of this idea that government employees are somehow different from the rest of society but a government employee can be anyone from a PFC in the Army to your teacher. I think a lot though goes back to why we need better history programs. Too many young people and I say this as a twenty seven year old don’t fully appreciate how hard much of the progress we enjoy today was fought for. Obviously, there’s freedom of association, etc. outside the campus, but there’s no reason whatsoever for a college or a university to allow any frat buildings on its property, for example.

I definitely agree but if they go off campus, it’s much more easy for them to do these hazing rituals that get kids killed.

424 HappyWarrior  Mar 10, 2015 10:05:33am

The problem though is at pretty much any university, your student government is going to be represented heavily by the Greek community. People join these frats as a means of creating connections and of course having a good time. You’ll never abolish them as I said but there has to be better oversight over them too.

Part of it is another unfortunate consequence of the US university funding and governance model: a lot of your big-time donors and influential alumni are ex-fraternity members. So that’s a powerful group you don’t want to alienate.

Speaking as someone mentally ill people generally have little problem with the mentally ill being shot to death or otherwise mistreated. Because they don’t really believe in mental illness. They believe in mental weakness.

They honestly think that if the mentally ill just applied themselves, grew a backbone, toughened up, they’d get better. Since ours is a society that worships strength, whatever the fuck that is, there isn’t a lot of pity spent on the mentally ill.

Been on the receiving end of that attitude most of my life.

Occasionally I try to get through to them with this cartoon, but it rarely works.

Quite a few universities don’t have official, on-campus fraternities and sororities. In those places, the buildings are just across the street. “Off-campus” really only means that they aren’t official student groups (and thus are somewhat restricted in how they can recruit people, e.g., during orientation weeks).

From a practical point of view it’s not a huge restriction on their activities. As HW points out above, it can also have negative effects.

If they’re off campus. All they can and will do is just drive pledges to the house. At most universities, non-freshmen can have cars and if you’re in an urban campus, it’s probably easy to get near the off campus house by public transit anyhow. But yeah the one frat whose parties I went to, their house was only a couple blocks from the campus or so. I could leave my apartment on campus and be there within ten minutes.

441 Nyet  Mar 10, 2015 10:21:19am

The vine has already been posted above, but it bears repeating:

The fraternity’s 79-year-old house mother, Beauton Gilbow, told Oklahoma’s News9 that she’d never heard the song, with the lyrics “There will never be a n***** at SAE,” before the video went viral.

“I don’t know what I’m doing. I mean, I’m in shock,” she told a reporter on the day that the fraternity was booted from their house.

“”Did you ever get any indication there was anything like this going on?” they asked.

“No, no, no. Never heard the song,” she said.

And then student newspaper The Oklahoma Daily dug up a 2013 Vine featuring Gilbow, in which she repeatedly chanted the word “n*****”, to the tune of Trinidad James’ “All Gold Everything.”

FIRE, the “free speech on campus” organization, believes that OU has acted illegally:

As a private organization, the SAE national fraternity is free to punish the chapter, as it has done. Other citizens and groups are free to refuse to associate with the fraternity members based on their expression, and students, faculty, and administrators may of course condemn it. If the expression itself is evidence of other unlawful activity, such activity may be investigated. But the Supreme Court of the United States has ruled time and time again that government institutions like the University of Oklahoma may not punish people for expression protected by the First Amendment.

There are colleges around the country that have done exactly that. Alfred University for one - occurring after a pledge died after drowning in a creek. They can be shut down, but it typically takes a crisis and death to make happen.

When hazing goes very wrong. Drugs and alcohol frequently play a big part in that - to the point that insuring these groups becomes prohibitively expensive. Going dry can seriously reduce the exposure to lawsuit, as can eliminating the pledge/hazing process.

Good news to share. My wife had her right foot amputated about 8 months ago.

That’s great news.

How’d I forget about Marshall? He is one of the greats. I blame lack of coffee.

What he went on to accomplish after the war was even better. The Marshall Plan is the best example of winning the peace there is.

That’s one thing warmongers forget. After the war there is a lot to do and it has to be done right or too many people will have given up their lives for nothing.

I live pretty near where he had a home. Great man. And that’s a great point about warmongrels. Knowing how to make peace is arguably more important for a general than knowing how to make war. The Marshall Plan was an act of genius by him and Truman.

A lot of so called free speech advocates see free speech as “I can say anything I want and you have to tolerate it.” Uh no. That’s what was missed by a certain someone during the Limbaugh calling Sandra Fluke a slut discussion. Rush could call Sandra a slut all he wanted but people were well within their rights to call for boycotts of him and his show’s sponsors.

I read a biography of Truman years ago. He said it was his experience as a Southerner that influenced the Marshall Plan.

He knew what a clusterfuck the Reconstruction was, and how that had poisoned American society. He wanted to avoid that after WWII. His idea was to make sure the Axis nations didn’t feel like ‘conquered people’.

Interesting. I thought he would have considered himself a Pennsylvanian. I think he was born there but perhaps he was raised in the South and had Southern born parents. He did a great job of that. It would have been even better if Stalin hadn’t told the nations that became the Warsaw Pact nations to accept Marshall Plan aid.

What Bill O’Reilly ignored about George Patton

In a letter to Eisenhower, Truman quoted from a report on conditions in the DP camps. “As matters now stand, we appear to be treating the Jews as the Nazis treated them except that we do not exterminate them. They are in concentration camps in large numbers under our military guard instead of SS troops. One is led to wonder whether the German people, seeing this, are not supposing that we are following or at least condoning Nazi policy.”

The “military guard” that Truman mentioned was Patton’s idea. He had his reasons, Patton wrote in his diary: “If they [the Jewish DPs] were not kept under guard they would not stay in the camps, would spread over the country like locusts, and would eventually have to be rounded up after quite a few of them had been shot and quite a few Germans murdered and pillaged.” At least twice in his diary, Patton referred to the Jewish DPs as “animals.”

The report to Truman was written by Earl G. Harrison, the dean of the University of Pennsylvania’s law school who had inspected the camps. Here is what Patton thought about Harrison: “Harrison and his ilk believe that the Displaced Person is a human being, which he is not, and this applies particularly to Jews who are lower than animals.”

The fact is no one’s telling him he has to now believe homosexuality is moral. No one is telling him as a minister that he has to perform SSM but they are telling him and this is what numbnuts like him don’t get is that they can’t discriminate against them. And I can’t discriminate Mike either. Even if I find his brand of Christianity to be disgusting and to resemble a Christian form of Islamism, I cannot lawfully refuse to serve him in my place of business because he is protected by that. It’s amusing to me how fuckers like Huck love to claim GAYS WANT SPECIAL RIGHTS when it’s really the other way around, they want special rights for them as conservative Christians to be able to treat whoever they see as “sinful” to be discriminated against.

NOTHING TRUMPS THE FREEDOM OF THE SPEECH!

To be clear, I think OU has done the right thing. But the free speech zealots are never sated in their quest for unlimited speech-freedom.

The frat was shut down by the national organization. Even FIRE has not problem with that since they’re a private organization. And since that means the SAE no longer exists at OU, then they don’t’ get to keep their campus housing. FIRE is questioning if the students can be expelled based on their speech.

They need to be ended. They contribute nothing good to society and every one of them needs to be closed.
