Republicans Realizing They Made a Bad Mistake: That Iran Letter Was a “Light-Hearted, Cheeky” Joke

WAS JOKE! WHERE SENSE OF HUMOR, LIBS?
Politics • Views: 43,057

And now that it’s starting to sink in how badly they screwed up, and how incredibly awful they made themselves look, the Republican Party is falling back on the time-honored “IT WAS A JOKE!” excuse.

Never fails. Except that it always fails.

Republican aides were taken aback by what they thought was a light-hearted attempt to signal to Iran and the public that Congress should have a role in the ongoing nuclear discussions. Two GOP aides separately described their letter as a “cheeky” reminder of the Congressional branch’s prerogatives.

“The administration has no sense of humor when it comes to how weakly they have been handling these negotiations,” said a top GOP Senate aide.

They’re seriously claiming this was a joke? Riiiiiiiiight. Nice try guys. And here’s some humor for you, your party are a bunch of weasels and the last time your party had any morally redeeming qualities was in the Eisenhower years and even that’s a stretch given that many of you jumped on the McCarthy boat.

Here’s an idea for a joke. Maybe the Marines at the WH should point rifles at McConnell and the other 46 next time they visit the WH. Wouldn’t that be a jolly good laugh! And yes I’m being facetious and no I don’t want actual harm done to these guys but I am so sick of the fucking Republican Party doing all they can to ruin this president simply because they can’t handle the fact he’s been elected overwhelmingly in two elections and that they represent a party full of bigoted jackasses who still aren’t over the South losing the Civil War.

I don’t want to ever hear from conservatives and Republicans again about how “awful” Democrats treated President Bush when time and time again Congressional Republicans show their lack of respect for President Obama.

Really Republicans does having a black president really bother you that much? Does having to hear Hail to the Chief being played for a dark skinned man enrage you that much? Does knowing that Barack Obama is only one of three presidents since WWII to get over 50% of the vote in both of his elections really infuriate you that much? Does knowing that Barack Obama will go down in history more admired and remembered than any of your leaders from this era? The last one should but you guys did this to yourself by trying to sabotage him for the sin of winning the 2008 presidential election and being a black Democrat with a Kenyan father.

I apologize if I was out of line even jokingly calling for the Marines at the WH to aim at the Republicans in the Senate but I mean it when I say I’m tired of how these guys treat our president. I’m tired of the lies, the excuses, and the lack of respect. President Obama may not always be right but he is our democratically elected president and it seems to me that too many Republicans can’t accept that fact so they think engaging in crap like this to undermine him is good and it’s just not. It’s disgusting and it’s even more pathetic given that they are the ones who constantly question President Obama’s own love of country yet you won’t hear a word of criticism and hell you’ll probably hear support from Rudy Giuliani on this.

What was really bad about last year’s elections is our fellow Americans finally elected some of the TP nutcases that we had avoided electing to the Senate in 2010 and 2012 elections. I really hope the Dems get out the vote like crazy in 2016 but also 2018. The Republican Party has shown these past four years that they shouldn’t be trusted controlling either house of Congress.

From the article:

“Before the letter, the national conversation was about Netanyahu’s speech and how Obama’s negotiations with Iran are leading to a terrible deal that could ultimately harm U.S. national security. Now, the Obama administration and its Capitol Hill partisans are cynically trying to push the conversation away from policy, and towards a deeply political pie fight over presidential and congressional prerogatives,” said a Senate Republican aide whose boss signed the letter.

So it’s Obama and his administration who are cynical partisans? Classic DARVO. Oy, the chutzpah!

As I said above, I don’t want to hear these bastards complaining when they eventually get one of their own back in the WH and that person is inevitably criticized. I will give the kid some credit for not pulling the usual “I’m sorry you were offended apology” that is pulled far too often but I really question the culture he was brought up in. And it really disturbs me to see people younger than me who have mindsets on race that would have disgusted my grandfather who would be 102 if he were still with us today.

Friends, I have been fairly busy here…so I am CERTAIN I must have misheard that Mitch McConnell and Lindsey Graham signed this letter. We have been informed right here on LGF that these men are “good eggs” who are moderate adults within the GOP.

Sure, they both had to act like flaming assholes during the election season. First, to vanquish Tea Party challengers who would have been SO MUCH WORSE for all fair minded Americans, then to defeat a pesky general election opponent (although…uh…I forget who Graham had to beat there).

In any case, now that the last election is far behind us and the next one is so far in the future, both of these great leaders of men have surely returned to their moderate centrist ways and would never have had anything to do with a letter like this.

Forgive me for wasting your time here. It is silly of me to assume either of these responsible politicians would have signed this letter. I obviously misheard.

My personal experience with most boys like this is that they need to be told not to do something. It’s like the study that showed boys who are told it’s bad to rape do it less than those that don’t. Yes, it’s somewhat obvious, if you’ve been taught to think about other people and their boundaries.

Had I been in charge of the school, I would have closed the frat, made the members move out, and conditioned their staying in the school on attending sensitivity classes and community service.

They’ll apologize, and probably mean it, but the only thing they will have learned is the abstract concept that they offended some people and that they shouldn’t get caught. It needs to be more personal. Otherwise, they can just end up at a school that accepts that behavior, especially since their parents can afford it.

re: #82 bratwurst

It does have a certain smell to it. And both are laying low.

Looks like Sen. Bob Corker, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee didn’t sign and many are hiding behind him in media reports. He has to excuse his buddies.

Freaking idiots. History will have a special place for these bumbling fools. Statesmen…

I know Senator Portman from Ohio signed it. He’s a bum. The Dude is so bad he has been transparent as our one Senator. Such a contrast with our other senator Sherrod Brown.

I’ll never forgive the Republican Party for the way they mocked Kerry’s service. The purple heart bandaids and the ads. Agh. That’s what a pathetic party does though. They question the patriotism of a man who was willing to give his life for his country because they can’t handle the fact that Kerry spoke out against Vietnam upon returning home. Tough shit. Kerry’s service in Vietnam was honorable and mocking his Purple Hearts was proof of the true contempt for our veterans that they really have.

Yes. Because I’m me, I researched the top fraternities in the country over the last 2 days, looking for patterns in famous alumni. All have their share of characters but none has the Southern Conservative flavor of SAE. I started seeing some Democrats in their lists, then saw dates and realized they were Dixiecrats.

Issa isn’t in charge of the House Committee on Government Reform anymore, and new chairman Chaffetz is more interested in fixing broken parts of the government than screaming.

There’s also the fact that the House doesn’t have a role in ratifying treaties and if the House made too much noise about an Iran deal the Senate would vote to ratify it simply to put the lower house in its place.

Richard Nixon (ex-officio even) held secret negotiations with the Viet Cong before the 1968 election, George McGovern traveled to Cuba under the embargo. The Senate is understood to be a representative of the US government just as much as the State Department or the President. It’s just considered politically polite to allow State to run the helm, and to present a unified front

I keep saying this, and I’ll say it again. The key issue is Obama’s a democrat. Any Dem would get the same treatment. The bonus hate is he’s black. With Hillary, it’s that she’s a she. Kerry was a wimp ass, undeserved Purple Heart recipient. The hate will differ but all Dems will suffer it.

It’s multilayer racism. Remember Bill Clinton was “The First Black President”. I guess because he was a southerner who wasn’t a flaming racist? Because if blacks weren’t allowed to vote he wouldn’t have won? I dunno, but they’ve been practicing up for this since the Willie Horton era.

Oklahoma has really been showing its ass this week.

House Bill 1125 would bar county clerks from issuing marriage licenses in the wake of the federal court ruling late last year striking down a state ban on same-sex marriages…

If the Senate passes the bill, only “an ordained or authorized preacher or minister of the Gospel, priest or other ecclesiastical dignitary of any denomination” would be allowed to issue “certificates of marriage” after presiding over a ceremony.

Unfucking believable.

Of course, the wingnuts can’t tie their own shoes without tripping over their feet.

State House Democrats opposing HB 1125 also noted that it would effectively legalize same-sex unions anyway, since the measure does not specifically define marriage as being between a man and a woman.

AFL-CIO sues state, Scott Walker, over right-to-work law

The Wisconsin AFL-CIO and two other labor organizations filed suit Tuesday against the state’s newly enacted right-to-work law, claiming it is unconstitutional because it compels unions to act on behalf of workers no longer required by the law to pay union dues as a condition of employment, providing an unfair benefit.

The arrangement is an unconstitutional transfer of property from the unions to non-members who no longer have to pay dues to receive services that unions are required to provide under federal labor laws, according to the lawsuit.

The suit is the first to be filed since Gov. Scott Walker signed right-to-work into law on Monday after the bill was fast-tracked through the Republican-controlled Legislature last week.

How could O’Reilly be in two places at the same time, one may ask? In his 2012 account, the inventive O’Reilly may have been emulating the time-traveling investigator Jake Epping, who went back in time to solve the JFK assassination in Stephen King’s 2011 best-selling book 11/22/63. Epping in that book used time travel to drop in on George de Mohrenschildt before he killed himself. But of course Epping’s feat was pure fiction.

Although a viral photo of a flyer listing alleged Texas Fiji pledge rules resurfaced on news and social media websites after the fraternity hosted a party guests said had a “border patrol” theme last month, no source has ever been able to confirm the authenticity of the eight-year-old image.
The flyer is titled “Fiji Pledge Rules — Confidential,” and lists rules including “no interracial dating” and “no Mexicans.”
Though the post has sparked outrage in recent weeks, its source was actually a 2007 post on Flickr, a photo sharing website.
Again, the authenticity of the flyer has never been verified.

1. The suspects in Nemtsov’s murder have allegedly told the human rights activists that they were tortured and forced to confess.

2. The liberal Novaya Gazeta doesn’t doubt the Chechen version per se, but says that Dadayev certainly wasn’t the one who organized the murder. Acc. to their own sources it was certain “Ruslan” (his surname was then revealed by others) who, once again, is connected to Ramzan Kadyrov and Adam Delimkhanov.

3. Meanwhile, Kadyrov’s aide Shaa Turlayev is now wanted by the federal authorities. Or better: wanted again.

Currently he is suspected of ordering the hit on the mayor of Khasavyurt in 2012.

But he was already wanted in 2010 in connection with the assassination attempt on Isa Yamadayev, when the failed killer testified that the attempt was organized by Turlayev, and personally ordered by Kadyrov himself in presence of Delimkhanov. The court accepted the part about Turlayev but (haha) also said that the hit was ordered by “unknown persons”. At that time the Chechen govt. said that Turlayev was peacefully residing in the republic and wasn’t hiding from anyone. Which kinda characterizes the whole situation.

Turlayev was suspected by the Vienna police in murder of Kadyrov’s former bodyguard and then enemy Umar Israilov - Turlayev’s documents were found in the killers’ car, he met with the killers in Austria shortly before the murder.

Anywhere you see “Turlayev organized this or that”, you can assume “Kadyrov did it”.

Your fans want you to run as Russia’s next president—who would you like to see as president in 2012?

My idol, [Vladimir] Putin. I want him to be the president as long as he lives. I love him very much, as a man loves a man. He is a man of his word; he brought peace to Chechnya. We were in the hands of bandits, and the alcoholic [Boris] Yeltsin bombed us. Those who criticize Putin are not human, they are my personal enemies. Before I go, whatever happened to trust in this country? I’d say the Republicans have made a complete hash of it because they’re not public servants, they’ve turned into the Inquisition when it comes to those they think are vulnerable.

Fight, Dems, fight, if that’s what it takes. And it’s a horrible day in the US when we perceive an opposing party as the “enemy”.

But this is what the Republicans are turning politics into because of their own faulty ideology that has no respect for minorities, women and others who don’t share the same reactionary views as they do. Goebbels couldn’t do a better job in this country than the Rs.

217 Nyet  Mar 11, 2015 4:33:14am

In his 2007 book Nemtsov described how he first met Kadyrov. It was in 2002 in Gudermes, at the Congress of the Chechen people, where Nemtsov was invited by Akhmad Kadyrov, Ramzan’s father. During the Congress Nemtsov said some unpopular things, like that Chechnya doesn’t need a president, but rather a strong parliament.

As I left the room, a man with whitish eyes approached me and said that for such speeches I should be killed. I asked: “Who are you?”. He took out and showed me an ID of an FSB lt.-colonel or colonel. It was Ramzan Kadyrov. I can’t say that I was very frightened, because immediately the Chechens around me started saying that Ramzan was joking. But I saw no jokes in his eyes. In his eyes I saw hatred.

Think that was a Roman maneuver.

The phalanx didn’t really allow for much in the way of tactics. The closest they came was at The Battle of Leuctra.

It’s no joke that some of those elected to Congress are the same RWNJ constituents that they’re listening to now.

This is why we shouldn’t elect members of the “mob” that would destroy us as a country.

The Repubs, of course, have allowed some to slip through the cracks—those who would follow the worst of the mob and refuse to actually lead in a statesman-like manner. If you refuse to represent certain constituents who have the same Constitutional rights as any other person, then you should never hold office.

When someone running for office says they’re “just like” me, I run from that candidate as fast as I can. I want them to be better than me in education, experience, temperament.

We should expect the best of the best who listen to us, not just someone who reflects our views, but make decisions based on facts and the law, and if the law is wrong, try to change it, not subvert it with the kind of bullshit moves the Republicans are making. It’s why we have a Constitution, which elected officials swear to uphold, and why I condemn certain of those who are attempting to act outside of it.

You work with the Constitution you have, not the one you “pray” or wish for.

National Geographic sold its soul to the devil when they got in bed with Murdoch in order to raise funds for the (joint effort) National Geographic Channel, and now the devil is collecting his dues:

Nat Geo’s new ‘Killing Jesus’ microsite takes the crucifixion interactive

National Geographic Channel is banking on “Killing Jesus,” its docudrama adaptation of Bill O’Reilly’s bestselling book. To promote the movie’s debut on March 29, the network has unveiled an immersive, interactive website supporting its latest documentary about the life of Jesus, “Killing Jesus.”

Designed by digital agency Mullen, the website builds on the “greatest story ever told” by providing an interactive experience with multiple points of view on the life of Jesus. Evoking the Rashomon Effect, it lets visitors view the story from three different perspectives, each posing the question of whether Jesus was the son of God, son of man or a just a threat to Roman rule.

[…]

Nat Geo is also running a campaign called “Killing With Kindness,” inspired by Jesus’ encouragement for people to be kind to each other in which it is highlighting organizations that help to spread kindness in the world with the hashtag #killingwithkindness.

NatGeo is now (and has been ever since they hooked up with Murdoch) in the Je$u$ business, in order to make customers of the incurably magical-thinking Americans.

No offense taken, but I disagree. Adoptions are held to a somewhat stricter scale of woo-woo than natural birth. An impartial state agency would be within its rights to remove the children and rescind the adoption if the caseworkers believed the welfare of the children were in danger. They might be willing to give the exorcism a pass (this being fundie land), but the telepathy would probably not get a pass.

I don’t give a rat’s ass whether some people consider exorcism or telepathy valid, and others don’t. In an adoption case, there is no benefit of the doubt given adoptive parents. Or there shouldn’t be, I should say.

Toddler’s Exorcism Death Part of Dark History

livescience.com

“A Virginia man was convicted earlier this week in the death of a 2-year-old who died during a 2011 exorcism. Eder Guzman-Rodriguez beat his daughter Jocelyn to death in an attempt to rid her of the demon he believed was inside her.

(snip)

“Though belief in fairies has waned in modern times, belief in spiritual possession by demons and other supernatural entities remains very much with us. In 2003, an autistic 8-year-old boy in Milwaukee was killed during an exorcism by church members who blamed an invading demon for his disability; and in 2005, a young nun in Romania died at the hands of a priest during an exorcism after being bound to a cross, gagged, and left for days without food or water in an effort to expel demons. In 2010, a 14-year-old boy in England was beaten and drowned to death by relatives trying to exorcise an evil spirit from him.

“Though belief in spirits and demons has been a part of humanity for millennia, it also has a dark side and can inflict terrible harm on the most innocent among us.”

There is always something that can go horribly wrong. Better to love and protect children in every way than believe they are “possessed” or “evil”. Only a mentally unbalanced person would think that.

I said nothing about YEC, which I agree is also pretty wacky, but not as dangerous psychologically as exorcism and telling kids they have demons inside them and can’t be trusted. Nor did I say anything about chains and physical abuse (though I suspect the “rod” may have been used in this household).

Your statements that all magical belief systems are equally silly is just fine and dandy in the abstract sense. But there are benign beliefs, that don’t necessarily endanger the welfare of a child (Santa Claus, the Virgin birth), and those that do (demons, exorcism, shunning on the basis of superstitious fear).

I am not sure if you are being devil’s advocate here, or being obtuse. We are not talking about adults dealing with adults. Adults can believe whatever they want. PENSACOLA, Fla. — Seven Marines and four soldiers were presumed dead Wednesday after an Army Black Hawk helicopter crashed during a night training exercise at Eglin Air Force Base in the Florida Panhandle. Here’s an overview of what happened.
WHO WAS ON THE HELICOPTER
The Marines are part of a Camp Lejeune, North Carolina-based special operations group and the soldiers are from a Hammond, Louisiana-based National Guard unit, according to Eglin Air Force Base officials. The Louisiana guardsmen are members of the 1-244th Assault Helicopter Battalion. The names of those involved have not been released, pending notification of their next of kin. A military official, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the official wasn’t authorized to speak on the record, said they are presumed dead.

I did a search at YouTube to see if there were any videos of Morning Joe from today. I did come across this bit with Mika and Joe more or less saying it was that nasty hip-hop stuff and all the “n” words those poor Oklahoma kids heard that caused them to sing there little racist song on the bus.

And then there is William “Clueless” Kristol saying it was to be expected. A bunch of drunk kids repeating what they hear. Damn. I didn’t know the SAE kids learned that particular ditty from the rappers.

Really? Learn some new bullshit every day!

I am so glad to only catch this insane thinking in YouTubes after the fact. Seeing it on YouTube seems to make it more of a joke than seeing the actual idiocy flowing in real time.

Well, a brief time here this morning. Time to get busy. Back later. Everyone keep you derp-blocking helmets on. I have a feeling it is going to be a bad day…er, week…uh, year.

I’ve heard this same false equivalency all week on Sirius Radio. There are times when wingnuts should probably just condemn the racist frat and then shut the fuck up. However, they are too busy trying to White Splain their racist friends.

UpChuck ran a story about a RW think tank’s analysis of Oklahoma’s admissions from 2012, alleging that non-whites got preferential treatment in admission, so RACISM!!

Only thing is, Oklahoma ended affirmative action in admissions in 2012, a fact which he buries somewhere in the middle of the article as a “by the way,” and then closes the story by suggesting the practice still continues.

He also ran the lyrics of the song, complete with the n-words.

Of course, they’re going to say no.

“Last month, three Democratic senators sent 100 letters to an assortment of fossil-fuel companies and organizations seeking information on whether they have backed research into global warming and other environmental topics.

“Koch Industries Inc., which includes refining, chemical and pipeline companies, was among the recipients.

“But in a March 5 letter obtained by The Associated Press, Mark V. Holden, Koch’s senior vice president and general counsel, wrote that such information treads on First Amendment rights.”

You didn’t expect them to say that? Great cover up for their “billion dollar funding” of conservative candidates.

Returning it to the child-rearing question, I’m proposing that adoptees are just going to have to take their chances, like the zygotes. The alternative is a system of state-sanctioned adoption commissars or state institutions. We could argue about that, but it ain’t happnin’ soon.

Number of days since President Obama officially requested Congress consider AUMF: 1 month, and counting.

Number of days the GOP has refused to address the issue: even longer, since the President indicated need to get AUMF before that.

The GOP can tailor its own AUMF, but to do so would mean doing the one thing it hasn’t done in years and that’s called govern/legislating. Attacking the president is so much easier than doing its job.

It like everything is an extension. I remember when I was a kid being amused by my brother’s African American friends who said they didn’t like rock because so much of rock is heavily influenced by African American blues. The Stones wouldn’t be the Stones without B.B King, Muddy Waters, or Robert Johnson. I had to like most people have a fine arts class for my degree in college. It’s tricky to rock a rhyme. That’s why some folks think rap is a gangsta’s paradise, even though we get no sleep til Brooklyn and we’ve got to fight for our right to party and rapture.

Some folks simply don’t get that rap is an extension of spoken word and music, and that the form has been around for a whole lot longer than these folks would care to admit, but it’s not just the music itself, but who’s proffering the rap that makes it “dangerous.”

I listened to and enjoyed hip-hop & rap from the days of The Sugar Hill Gang. But really, an old white bread boy in the midwest? I didn’t get it. Not really.

I finally _GOT_ rap as that old white punk when I realized that Lou Reed had been rapping since day one and that “Street Hassle” was the prototype of “gangsta” in a real way.

She’s been covered by LGF in the past, along with the AAPS, particularly when it comes to crackpot theories about Ebola.

That group is connected with Rand/Ron Paul and pushes all manner of BS, including that illegals are responsible for bringing in all manner of ailment, including Enterovirus D68 and Ebola.

The AAPS and their crackpots are the go-to “experts” for WND and Drudge on all manner of xenophobia and racism, to say nothing of exotic theories about stuff like Ebola.

It looked like they were using water to cool down the area before changing to foam to smother the remainder, but for some reason changed back to water when they hit the main fuel source for the fire.
And we got a nice image of why spraying water directly onto a gasoline fire is a very bad idea, because it flared back up to almost its original size and RAPIDLY spread past the containment area.

Some new information regarding the two University of Oklahoma fraternity members who were expelled for their leading in the recently-published racist video.

Both are suddenly “very apologetic” for their role (which should be a surprise to no one). Also, both are from Dallas, and the ringleader was a graduate of an exclusive (and expensive) Christian private school.

I swear, MSNBC has become more and more like CNN and FN. Although, Rachel Maddow sort of brought up Andrea Mitchell who was flogging the Clinton emails. It does seem all of them on MSNBC have been taking courses in how to best “take down” the Clintons as some sort of “retribution”, except Maddow didn’t buy it.

FFS, MSNBC and others, if you’re going to crucify someone, make it the #47Idiots.

re: #583 Targetpractice

Marsha Harris told the babysitter that the girls were demonically possessed and that they had to be kept separate because they could communicate telepathically. One of the girls crushed the family’s guinea pig to death, Marsha Harris claimed, and the family were so frightened of the children that they summoned an exorcist from Alabama to perform a casting-out of the girls’ demons.

“The first night I was over there, I just broke down and cried with this little girl because I just felt so bad for her,” said Goldsborough. The Harrises used an elaborate system of locks, video cameras and alarms to separate the girls because they believed they would kill their entire family.

Another source close to the family corroborated this account to the Times, saying that Marsha Harris regularly spoke of the demons she believed were living inside the adopted girls.

But remember, these are good God fearing Christians…

That’s the problem. Instead of calling a psychiatrist, they went with a supernatural false-explanation of a psychiatric issue.

I think that on some level, most Christians realize that nothing supernatural interacts with their lives, even if they don’t understand that it’s all imaginary, but the most Conservative one’s actually fully believe to the point of thinking that a preacher can replace a doctor.

Anything & everything that doesn’t conform to what’s acceptable according to their interpretation of Christianity is of Satan (or the demons who do his bidding). This I know for a fact because, as I said last week, I have experienced it up close and personal.
