FL GOP Lawmaker: CO2 Can’t Cause Climate Change Because “God Gave It to Us”

Anti-science religious fanatics and proud of it
Environment • Views: 40,393

As Florida governor Rick Scott tries to deny he told state officials not to use the terms “climate change” or “global warming,” another Republican state lawmaker, Rep. John Wood, now says carbon dioxide can’t possibly be harmful to the atmosphere because God gave it to us.

Wood said he does not think that carbon dioxide emissions, also known as CO2, was causing air pollution.

“If you consider CO2 to be a pollutant, than everybody zip up their mouths and don’t exhale for the rest of the meeting because you are polluting the air,” he said.

“CO2 in my opinion is not a pollutant,” Wood said. “God gave us C02 to grow plants, for us to exhale, everything else.”

Wood (which is apparently also the material his head is made of) is also convinced the sea level isn’t rising despite what those egghead scientists are trying to trick us into believing.

Wood said he thought Florida’s compliance with the federal plan to curb carbon dioxide emissions would place “draconian costs” on the state and not produce much of an impact on the climate or rising sea levels.

“The impact on the level of the sea…is equivalent to the difference in this piece of paper,” he said, holding up a single sheet of paper. “For me, that is not good science. That is not a good reason to implement this provision on the people of Florida.”

Using that logic, one cannot drown in water or burn in a fire because God gave it to us.

There sure are a lot of them now, and they control the government for all practical purposes. I can’t say I see a clear way out of this problem.

The human body also requires Oxygen, so therefore, according to Rep Wood, a human being exposed to a surplus of Oxygen would suffer no ill effects.

Well, a human would if God decided to punish him/her. Same goes for everything bad that happens to us, I guess.

People get horrible diseases because God chooses for them to. No need for science of medicine. They’re an affront to the power of God.

I lived Dunning-Kruger before I knew Dunning-Kruger. I’ve been in a technology based business for 27 years. When I was young, I thought I knew more. Later, I realized the true wisdom is understanding what you don’t know, your limitations, and most importantly, who to call for help (somebody smart than you at this particular issue).

After I got my grey beard on, I realized the best guys also self-assessed their own skill levels best. Their assessments matched my own when giving them employee reviews.

The lesser performing guys always thought they knew more and were better at their jobs than they really were.

I realize now, after 27 years, I’m not that good at my job any more. But I excel at telling other people what to do and making them better LOL.

It all makes total sense.

“Two days ago I was on the air and I brought up Grover Norquist,” Beck explained on his radio program. “He’s a board member on the NRA, and he’s running for re-election. And I said something then that I meant then and I mean now — that if Grover Norquist remains on the board of the NRA, I don’t believe that I can remain a member of the NRA.”

Beck said he believes the people that Norquist “helps empower” are “agents of influence” for the Muslim Brotherhood.

“Many of the reasons why we’re on the wrong track now in the Middle East is because of the influence of Grover Norquist,” Beck said. “He is a guy that the left used to say was the all mighty and powerful Oz during the Bush administration. I used to mock that. … [But] we heard it so many times that we started doing our own homework on it. … And I’m sorry, he is Oz.”

“I don’t believe he’s out trying to destroy America, but his efforts and his work will lead to the destruction of America,” Beck declared. “Yesterday I spent about an hour on the phone with Wayne LaPierre at the NRA. … They reacted immediately because of your phone calls. Hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of phone calls have apparently come in.”

“I honestly expected some sort of defense. But [Wayne LaPierre] said, ‘…I want you [and] your audience to know, I take our members voice’s seriously,’” Beck continued. “When you called, they went into action. And they said that they were opening up an ethics investigation on Grover. They said they’re going to get down to the bottom of this once and for all. Grover denies all of these allegations.”

This is about othering Norquist because his wife is a Muslim.

Reason And Believing • 12 minutes ago
Beck is a Mormon , Mormons are not that much different than Muslims, Both don’t believe Jesus is God , both believe in Jesus as a divine prophet. Both have their own prophets that call for a theocracy. Both have their own finance laws and banks , Both have the same views concerning women .ect.

Mormonism is just as a bad as Islam. The only difference is Mormonism started in America ,where Christians stopped them from taking over.

This shows you how lost we are . The 2012 election was for Obama/Muslims and Romney/Mormons. Both deny Jesus is God , that he died for our Sins and that HE is the only thing we need for salvation

We are totally sc rewed because it seems MOST people do not have any idea hat their ignorance is destroying Christianity , not arabs in far away lands.

The thing is Norquist really has done a great deal of damage to the conservative cause. He managed to either bully or con so many Republican officeholders into signing his ridiculous pledge that the Party has effectively painted itself into an absolutist corner. You saw this in the 2012 GOP debates when not one candidate would even hypothetically agree to a ten to one spending cuts to tax increase budget balancing proposal. That really helped sell the idea that all Republicans are just fucking insane fundamentalist zealots totally uninterested in practical solutions.

Not to mention the shallow no taxes pledges that they know if they don’t sign, Grover’s PAC will come down hard against them in a primary. Norquist may be being unfairly targeted here and it does suck because it’s plain old bigotry that motivates it but he’s still as you illustrate a big part of the problem in the conservative political community.

You know i was never of the belief that it was simply Norquist behind the refusal to raise taxes. Raising taxes has been the central line of attack against dems for years, it inevitably became impossible for any conservative to support the concept with or without some pledge.

It’s never been simply Norquist. The Dems are tax raisers goes back to before most or hell all of us were born but what Grover has done is organized it to the point where any tax increase you vote is cause to be labeled a tax raising spend-o-crat. He’s played a great role in eradicating the few actual fiscally conservative Republicans from elected offices. Read, ones that actually could admit that sometimes tax increases however unfortunate they may be have some necessity.

That we’re having the “where’s Putin?” discussion speaks volumes to the instability within the Russian government and that it’s worse than a house of cards should things go south.

That we’re seeing “is he dead” stories also shows just how screwed up the Russian government is when it comes to openess and legitimacy.

This, frankly, doesn’t sound very solid (“more intensely and genuinely”? who decides?) But anyway:

Research suggesting that political conservatives are happier than political liberals has relied exclusively on self-report measures of subjective well-being. We show that this finding is fully mediated by conservatives’ self-enhancing style of self-report (study 1; N = 1433) and then describe three studies drawing from “big data” sources to assess liberal-conservative differences in happiness-related behavior (studies 2 to 4; N = 4936). Relative to conservatives, liberals more frequently used positive emotional language in their speech and smiled more intensely and genuinely in photographs. Our results were consistent across large samples of online survey takers, U.S. politicians, Twitter users, and LinkedIn users. Our findings illustrate the nuanced relationship between political ideology, self-enhancement, and happiness and illuminate the contradictory ways that happiness differences can manifest across behavior and self-reports.

Not sure that the alums would have standing to sue. What damage have they suffered as a result? The damage is from current SAE members being racists and being caught on tape doing racist stuff. The OU admin then applied the Code of Conduct to their actions, and SAE’s national organization was the one that closed the chapter.

“Sigma Alpha Epsilon’s national headquarters has closed its Oklahoma Kappa chapter at the University of Oklahoma following the discovery of an inappropriate video,” read a statement posted to the fraternity’s Web site. “In addition, all of the members have been suspended, and those members who are responsible for the incident may have their membership privileges revoked permanently. We apologize for the unacceptable and racist behavior of the individuals in the video, and we are disgusted that any member would act in such a way. Furthermore, we are embarrassed by this video and offer our empathy not only to anyone outside the organization who is offended but also to our brothers who come from a wide range of backgrounds, cultures and ethnicities.”

It’s all about who has the influence.

This “represented McVeigh” thing is getting tiresome. I guess it’s an aperitif before we start seeing “Hillary defended a child rapist!” headlines a little bit later. That’s what lawyers do, represent the accused. The media should get over it.

Editor’s note: The Wall Street Journal quotes an analyst at Conifer Securities saying the dollar’s strength is sapping the stock market. ‘This whole move is being driven by one thing and one thing only, and that’s the dollar,’ said Rick Fier. ‘It’s going to crush earnings. You’re not going to get any sort of outlook that’s any good.’ - Tom
end of note

Translation: A strong dollar is good for the consumer, saving them money and making their paycheck go further.

Therefore, it is bad for investors’ dividends, billionaires’ revenues, and our commissions.

This has been a common pattern for some time now. Good news for the Main Street economy is bad news for Wall Street, and vice versa.

This suggests the needs for fundamental reform of our economy, which of course is completely impossible as long as US politics consists exclusively of trying to prevent the GOP wrecking crew from effing everything up.

As far as I’m concerned, Norquist’s wife is like Upchuck’s: why the fuck do we need to talk about her motives for being in the marriage anyway?

What is disgusting here is that the right-wing is so intolerant that they can’t believe that someone married to a Muslim can be trusted in anything. But instead the discussion has devolved into “well I’m not going to feel sorry for her because she’s choosing to stay married to him because he has money.”

Seriously. WTF, guys.

I agree. Splash damage like this is seriously not cool.

I always thought it was funny how the “Norquist is a Muslim” crowd are basically saying that Norquist is trying to destroy America, but then basically support everything in his agenda.

Well, they’re right. He is trying to destroy America. Just not how they think.

small list of things “God Gave to Us”

1. Sun’s Radiation. No need for sun screen. Let’s let skin cancer run amok! hurrah!

2. Cosmic Rays. No need for an atmosphere and Ozone layer. God will take care of all that invisible death from space.

3. Lead. there’s so much of it available here on Earth, how could God have possibly have meant it to be anything other than for cooking utensils and dinner plates?

4. Rats. enough said.

5. really… this is so stupid, is there any reason to go on? and on?

God also gave us arsenic. I guess you can swallow a pound of it, ‘cause He put it there.

The post claims that these two statements are effectively the same:

Wood (which is apparently also the material his head is made of) is also convinced the sea level isn’t rising despite what those egghead scientists are trying to trick us into believing.

and

“The impact on the level of the sea…is equivalent to the difference in this piece of paper,” he said, holding up a single sheet of paper. “For me, that is not good science. That is not a good reason to implement this provision on the people of Florida.”

They are not. The second statement, the one Wood actually made, claims that the impact [of Florida’s complying with CO2 emissions controls] on sea level [is the thickness of a sheet of paper].

It’s probably less. That’s the whole thing about the tragedy of the commons. The grass doesn’t actually get cropped all that more severely because Farmer Wood’s sheep are grazing there. It is the collective effect of not just Farmer Wood and his Florida flock, but of China, India, Germany, California, Texas, New York, Brazil, and so on, that drives sea level rise. Currently, levels are rising about 3 mm a year. The US share of global CO2 emissions is somewhere in the vicinity of 20 percent. Florida’s share of that share just might be 10 percent. And the reduction in emissions that Florida could likely achieve? 25 percent, tops. Near term, anyhow. So the cuts that Wood is talking about would amount to 1/2 of 1 percent of 3 mm per year. Over the course of fifty years, that’d be less than one millimeter.

Wood’s “thickness of a sheet of paper” isn’t that far off the mark. His error is a different one. He doesn’t get it that enough sheets of paper make a book. Florida isn’t the only player, and tragedies of the commons involve more than one flock. The grass dies whether or not any of the farmers get it. And sea level rise rates aren’t going to remain fixed. They’re already faster than they used to be, and momentum is gathering.

It’s important, when criticizing other people’s logic, to get one’s own straight. Wood’s error is not the error he’s charged with. It’s still a big mistake, but in debate, invective only counts before already favorably disposed audiences. Winning over unbelievers requires a more accurate style of argumentation.

…which goes to prove the phenomenon of eventual extremist group splinterization. As extreme as the modern NRA has evolved to be, it is still not extreme enough for loons like Glen Beck. The “take my ball and go home” mindset is palpable in these radical movements.

Well, they’re right. He is trying to destroy America. Just not how they think.

Huh? The “Right” is on the whole against inflation. More often, arguments for more inflation come from the “Left”. Paul Krugman, for instance.

Low inflation is always bad for somebody. Debtors come to mind, but also those who would like to sell abroad. Or cater to foreign tourists.

Other business interests (Walmart comes to mind) are surely OK with a strong dollar. Some political issues don’t break clean along party lines.
